Celebration of expanded 'Nuggets' box set reissue of 1960s garage rock music to include concert tribute, more

Rhino is throwing a three-day party in Los Angeles to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965-1968, one of the most influential rock anthologies ever released. The groundbreaking collection more than doubles in size for a new anniversary edition that will be released on vinyl as a Record Store Day exclusive on April 22.

The festivities begin Thursday, April 20, at 7PM with a Q&A in person presented by dublab and In Sheep’s Clothing, located at 436 N Fairfax Ave, Los Angeles. The event features Lenny Kaye, who compiled the original Nuggets collection and the new anniversary edition. Kaye (who also plays guitar with the Patti Smith Group) will answer questions from DJ/producer Tana Yonas. This is a free all-ages event, and their conversation will stream live on dublab radio on Sunday, April 30, 10am PST and will be made available in the station’s archives afterward.

On Friday, April 21, at 9PM, Rhino and dublab are throwing a psychedelic dance party at Gold Diggers, located at 5632 Santa Monica Blvd. in Los Angeles. There will be live music (The Violet Mindfield), DJ sets (Becky Ebenkamp, Reverberation Radio, and Kaye), go-go dancers (Suzi Creamcheese and Atomikitty), and a psychedelic light show by Stranger Liquids. This is a Free, 21+ event.

The celebration will peak on Record Store Day (April 22) when Rhino releases the new vinyl boxed set. That evening, from 7PM to 9PM, Rhino and Amoeba Hollywood will host a Record Store Day after-party on the Kimpton Everly Hollywood’s rooftop, where Kaye will spin an all-vinyl DJ set – and sign copies of the RSD boxed set. For admission, show a receipt from any purchase made at Amoeba that day. Details here.

NUGGETS: ORIGINAL ARTYFACTS FROM THE FIRST PSYCHEDELIC ERA, 1965-1968 (50th ANNIVERSARY EDITION) will be released on April 22 as a 5-LP set. Limited to 10,000 numbered copies, it will be available exclusively at select independent music retailers.

Originally released in October 1972, Nuggets focused on the first generation of American psychedelic and garage rock bands. It unearthed dozens of three-minute masterpieces that blazed brightly for a few weeks before fading from the charts during the mid-to-late 1960s. The seminal compilation defined the garage rock genre and helped inspire the rise of punk rock a few years later.

Kaye compiled the 27 tracks featured on the original double album under the supervision of Elektra Records’ founder, Jac Holzman. Both were involved in making the NUGGETS: 50th ANNIVERSARY EDITION, which contains new liner notes and artist biographies written by Kaye.

NUGGETS: 50th ANNIVERSARY EDITION expands the original with 42 additional tracks. They include songs left off the 1972 collection, plus tracks Kaye selected for a second volume of Nuggets that was never released.

In 1973, Kaye earmarked 28 songs for a potential Nuggets follow-up. At long last, his vision will be realized on NUGGETS: 50th ANNIVERSARY EDITION. The songs fill two LPs and include Top 40 hits like “96 Tears” by ? & The Mysterians, “Do You Believe In Magic” by The Lovin’ Spoonful, “7 And 7 Is” by Love, “Little Bit O’ Soul” by The Music Explosion, “Little Girl” by Syndicate of Sound, and “Laugh, Laugh” by Beau Brummels.

The collection’s final LP (dubbed Also Dug-Its, Artyfacts From The Original Nuggets) revisits 14 songs cut from the 1972 anthology. Among the highlights are “I’m Five Years Ahead Of My Time” by The Third Bardo, “The Spider And The Fly” by The Monocles, “99th Floor” by The Moving Sidewalks (featuring future ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons), and “Crazy Like A Fox” by Link Cromwell, aka Lenny Kaye.
