Pearl Jam news: archival concert stream, digital reissues, more

Pearl Jam is celebrating the anniversaries of its seminal albums Ten and No Code, launched on the same day, 5 years apart. In the Fall of 1991, a period known as the “60 days that changed rock,” there were epic album releases by artists Soundgarden, Nirvana, Guns N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica and Pearl Jam with Ten.

The band is asking fans to take to social media to share their memories of these iconic albums using the hashtags #30YearsOfTen and #25YearsOfNoCode. The campaign is a nostalgic look back to the nineties surfacing fan-lensed in-concert videos, behind-the-scenes photos, candid snapshots, ticket stubs, personal anecdotes about meeting the band.

The Ten Club (Pearl Jam's fan community) will present a free streaming event of the historic Moline, Illinois show (October 17, 2014) where Pearl Jam played No Code live from start to finish. Pearl Jam: The No Code Show, a Free Streaming Event begins today on the band’s YouTube channel and runs through Monday, August 30 at 11:59pm (PT).

To further celebrate the anniversary, Epic Records and Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, released newly remixed state-of-the-art digital-only editions of Ten and No Code today.

Both the 30th anniversary digital edition of Ten and the 25th anniversary digital edition of No Code have been mixed by producer/sound engineer Josh Evans in state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 Reality Audio to provide listeners with an immersive sonic experience.

Evans--who began working with the band as an assistant engineer and tech during the making of the eponymous Pearl Jam (aka the "Avocado" album) in 2006--produced 2020's Gigaton, the first new Pearl Jam studio album in seven years, and deployed Dolby Atmos to bring listeners further into each song with more detail and nuance.

"These two albums sound amazing in the immersive format," said Josh Evans. "For Ten, the goal was to create the best version of the record, bigger, wider and higher fidelity; now, it actually sounds as great coming out of your speakers as it does in your memory of hearing it the first time. 25 years ahead of its time, No Code almost sounds like it was intended to be an immersive album; experimental layers, nuance and raw aggression are all amplified and expanded in a simultaneously bigger and more intimate experience."

Ten, Pearl Jam's groundbreaking debut, was originally released on August 27, 1991. A phenomenal critical and popular success, Ten established Pearl Jam as avatars for a new generation of rock; propelled by the energy of hits like "Alive," "Jeremy," "Even Flow" and "Ocean," the album peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 and has been certified 13x Platinum by the RIAA.

August 27, 1996, marked the release of No Code, Pearl Jam's fourth studio album. The third consecutive Pearl Jam album to enter the Billboard 200 at #1, the RIAA Platinum-certified No Code reinforced the band's commitment to provocative musical exploration with songs like "Who You Are," "Hail, Hail" and "Off He Goes." The album enhanced the band's reputation as international superstars as it hit #1 in Australia, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand, Portugal and Sweden and Top 5 (or better) in Austria, Ireland, Norway, the United Kingdom, Finland, Italy, Belgium and the Netherlands.

On July 17, 2021, with 2021 marking the 30th anniversary of Pearl Jam's iconic debut album, Ten, Legacy Recordings and Record Store Day released special 12" and cassette single editions of "Alive," the track that kicked PJ into high gear. The 12" features the original promo single version of "Alive" plus three rare B-sides: "Wash,” “Dirty Frank" and PJ's cover of the Beatles' "I've Got A Feeling," currently unavailable anywhere else. All four tracks are included on side A while side B contains an etching of the band's 'Stick Man' logo. The "Alive" cassette single is a replica of the promo cassette originally circulated at the time of Ten's release. It includes the promo single version of "Alive" plus "Wash" and "I've Got A Feeling," repeated on both sides.

After a period out-of-print, Epic/Legacy released a new 12" vinyl pressing of No Code on August 13th. This collector's edition features the album's original artwork and packaging with each album containing the same set of nine postcards (original pressings featured nine postcards randomly chosen from a complete set of 36).

Warbly Jets unveil 'Monsterhouse' in November

Alternative rock duo WARBLY JETS premiered a new video for their single “TMI,” the latest offering from their just-announced album, MONSTERHOUSE (out November 12).

MONSTERHOUSE is the Los Angeles-based duo’s second full-length studio album, following their critically-acclaimed, self-titled debut released in 2017.

“The first album changed our lives explains Samuel Shea. “But parts of it feel too one-dimensional since there are no rules in pop music anymore,” adds Julien O’ Neill. “We’re witnessing a rebirth of what music can be. Music is getting way more flexible and people’s ears are wide open. It’s easy to be inspired by the infinite possibility. That’s what this album is about for us.”

MONSTERHOUSE features their most personal songwriting to date. “It’s a patchwork narrative of our own experiences,” explains O’ Neill, “but I hope people listening will find a lot to relate to with the questions we’ve been asking ourselves. Things like, why do you feel that you can’t go on without that person? How did you grow up so fast? How do you change again for the better?”

The self-titled debut won them the respect and attention of press and streaming outlets, earning spots on Apple Music’s The New Rock playlist, Sirius XM Alt Nation radio, and Matt Wilkinson’s Beats1, as well as touring slots opening for acts like Liam Gallagher, Dandy Warhols, and Rival Sons in-between international tours of their own.

“With the first record, I think there was a bit of us trying to make something that would be well-received,” explains O’ Neill. “Now we’re really focused on creating music that pushes us forward, and that we're excited about.”

In 2019, the band put out the EP Propaganda, the age of Trump and late-era capitalism leading them to explore darker, politically-charged themes with genre-wrecking, sample-based songs that left the band feeling displaced.

“I think we were labeled as sounding too mainstream for the indie crowd, and too indie sounding for a major label deal,” explains Shea. “It left us in no man’s land, in a bit of an un-cool social purgatory.”

“Becoming the odd man out has the added benefit of being the only one of your kind,” Shea continues. “It’s given us our own lane, and as much as it’s isolated us, it’s also pushed us.”

The new album combines alternative rock, synthpop, loops, and audio collaging, a pastiche of inspirational touchstones.

“I think we walked into this album more from a producer role than ever before,” explains O’ Neill, citing everyone from Dangermouse to Rick Rubin as sonic inspiration. “There was an intention not to make music as a band playing songs, but to create a sonic landscape you could step into.”

Endless hours in the studio spent teaching themselves how to make records played into every left-of-center choice. “We’ve really learned how to play the studio like an instrument.” explains Shea. “Those long hours pull me straight out of any illusions, and show me that there’s always an infinite amount of learning to be done. Once we start using the same approach too much, it’s time to learn something new.”

Track listing:

1. Monsterhouse
2. Bad News
3. NASA
4. TMI
5. Let Go : Be Free
6. Bloodlust

The Beatles news: 'Let it Be' box set on the way

Here's more exciting Beatles news for fans. See the press release below for details.

This fall, The Beatles' chart-topping 1970 album, Let It Be, will be presented in a range of Special Edition packages to be released worldwide on October 15 by Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol/UMe. Three tracks from the newly remixed and expanded edition make their digital release debuts with today’s preorder launch: “Let It Be” (2021 Stereo Mix), “Don’t Let Me Down” (first rooftop performance), and “For You Blue” (Get Back LP Mix).

Stream “For You Blue” (Get Back LP Mix): https://TheBeatles.lnk.to/ForY...

The Let It Be album has been newly mixed by producer Giles Martin and engineer Sam Okell in stereo, 5.1 surround DTS, and Dolby Atmos. The album’s new Special Edition follows the remixed and expanded anniversary editions of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (2017), The BEATLES (‘White Album’) (2018), and Abbey Road (2019).

All the new Let It Be releases feature the new stereo mix of the album as guided by the original “reproduced for disc” version by Phil Spector and sourced directly from the original session and rooftop performance eight-track tapes. The physical and digital Super Deluxe collections also feature 27 previously unreleased session recordings, a four-track Let It Be EP, and the never before released 14-track Get Back stereo LP mix compiled by engineer Glyn Johns in May 1969.

Work to compile an album to be called “Get Back” was carried out in April and May by Glyn Johns, who, for his version, included false starts, banter between songs, early takes rather than later, more polished performances, and even “I’ve Got A Feeling” falling apart with John explaining, “I cocked it up trying to get loud.” The Beatles, however, decided to shelve the project’s copious tapes, film reels, and photos, in order to record and release their LP masterpiece, Abbey Road. Drawn from the tapes made in January 1969, plus some sessions which preceded and followed those recordings, The Beatles’ final album, Let It Be, was eventually issued on May 8, 1970 (May 18 in the U.S.) to accompany the release of the Let It Be film.

The sessions that brought about the Let It Be album and film represent the only time in The Beatles’ career that they were documented at such great length while creating music in the studio. More than 60 hours of unreleased film footage, more than 150 hours of unreleased audio recordings, and hundreds of unpublished photographs have been newly explored and meticulously restored for three complementary and definitive Beatles releases this fall. The new Let It Be Special Edition is joined by “The Beatles: Get Back”, the documentary series directed by three-time Oscar®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson, and a new hardcover book also titled The Beatles: Get Back.

“I had always thought the original film Let It Be was pretty sad as it dealt with the break-up of our band, but the new film shows the camaraderie and love the four of us had between us,” writes Paul McCartney in his foreword for the Let It Be Special Edition book. “It also shows the wonderful times we had together, and combined with the newly remastered Let It Be album, stands as a powerful reminder of this time. It’s how I want to remember The Beatles.”

Available via digital platforms now is the advance single “Leave – Alternate Version.” Originally recorded for the A Life Less Ordinary soundtrack saw Michael Stipe re-record the vocals this time.

Reflects Stipe, in a press release, “I actually might prefer this version to the one that's on the record… Well, I wouldn’t say I prefer it, it just tells a different story with the lyric.” Fans can stream or download the single now, and pre-save the album.

First released in September 1996, New Adventures in Hi-Fi achieved platinum certification in the U.S. and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Elsewhere, the album went to No. 1 in more than a dozen countries, including Australia, the UK, and Canada.

New Adventures in Hi-Fi was R.E.M.’s final album with drummer and founding member Bill Berry, who left the group amicably the following year. It was mostly created during their 1995 Monster tour.

The band traveled with a mobile recording truck, capturing new songs on an 8-track during soundchecks (as well as in various backstage areas and on the tour bus). The year-long outing, which began in January 1995, marked R.E.M.’s first tour in six years.

That March, Berry collapsed on stage from an aneurism and spent the next month recuperating. Mills, meanwhile, underwent intestinal surgery in June. A month later, Stipe had emergency surgery for a hernia (which, he asserts, occurred while performing the song “Undertow”).

After the band returned from the eventful—yet highly successful—run of dates, they entered the studio with their longtime producer, Scott Litt, to record a few final tracks and put finishing touches on others.

Among them was the seven-minute-long “Leave;” “E-Bow the Letter,” featuring backing vocals from Patti Smith; “New Test Leper,” which Buck proclaims is his favorite R.E.M. song; and “How the West Was Won and Where It Got Us,” one of several songs on the album inspired by Stipe’s experiences living in Los Angeles.

Upon its release, New Adventures in Hi-Fi marked R.E.M.’s longest studio album, with a total run-time of 65 minutes.

My Morning Jacket makes long awaited recording return

My Morning Jacket's self-titled ninth studio album is due
October 22 via ATO Records. It will be available at all DSPs and in various physical formats, including CD and special edition 2LP vinyl; pre-orders begin today.

First single “Regularly Scheduled Programming” is out now with an official music video co-directed by Jim James and George Mays streaming on YouTube.

“This song really hits home for me after what we’ve gone through with the pandemic,” says My Morning Jacket’s frontman Jim James, in a prepared statement about the release of “Regularly Scheduled Programming.”

“But even before then, it felt like so many of us were trading real life for social media, trading our own stories for the storylines on TV, trading our consciousness for drugs. We need to help each other wake up to real love before it's too late."

The band’s first new music since 2015’s GRAMMY® Award-nominated THE WATERFALL, MY MORNING JACKET was produced and engineered by James over two multi-week sessions at Los Angeles, CA’s 64 Sound. It followed what looked like a permanent hiatus. But after performing four shows in summer 2019 – beginning with two nights at Red Rocks Amphitheatre – My Morning Jacket decided to carry on as a recording entity.

“I hope this album brings people a lot of joy and relief, especially since we’ve all been cooped up for so long,” says James. “I know that feeling you get from driving around blasting music you love, or even lying in bed and crying to the music you love. The fact that we’re able to be a part of people’s lives in that way is so magical to us, and it feels really good that we’re still around to keep doing that.”

MY MORNING JACKET, the album, will be available on CD as well as two vinyl configurations: 2xLP Clear Vinyl featuring a gatefold jacket with artwork by Robert Beatty, custom inner-sleeves with lyrics, and digital download; and 2xLP 180-Gram Deluxe Colored Vinyl featuring cloudy blue and cloudy orange colored vinyl, deluxe foil gatefold jacket with artwork by Robert Beatty, 24” x 24” circular fold-out poster, custom inner-sleeves with lyrics, and digital download.

Additionally, My Morning Jacket is set to launch their new MMJ LIVE vinyl series next month with LIVE 2015, collecting 16 previously unreleased live tracks recorded during 2015’s THE WATERFALL Tour. LIVE 2015 will arrive Friday, September 3 exclusively on 3LP white vinyl (with digital download card); a digital release will follow at a later date. Pre-orders are available now exclusively via the official My Morning Jacket shop HERE.

My Morning Jacket: Jim James (vocals, guitar), Tom Blankenship (bass), Patrick Hallahan (drums), Carl Broemel (guitar), and Bo Koster (keyboards).

Kacey Musgraves news

Six time Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves will release her fourth studio album, Star Crossed, on Sept. 10, via Interscope Records/UMG Nashville. Star Crossed: The film directed by Bardia Zeinali, stars Musgraves, and will be streamed exclusively via Paramount+ on the same day.

The title track written by Musgraves, Daniel Tashian, and Ian Fitchuk along with the film’s trailer are both out now. The film takes the music from the studio to the screen with a sense of heightened reality envisioned by Musgraves and Zeinali and it was shot by Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Matthew Libatique (A Star Is Born, Black Swan).

“We wanted it to feel cinematic and epic without compromising the heart and the emotion,” Zeinali says, “to feel fantastical and heightened and tell her story through the lens of art and fashion.” The 50 -minute movie was filmed over a 10 day shoot in Los Angeles and features cameos from Emmy Award-winner Eugene Levy, Victoria Pedretti (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, You), singer-songwriter Princess Nokia, Symone (RuPaul’s Drag Race winner) and comedian Megan Stalter.

The global film premiere will exclusively debut on Paramount+ in the US, Latin America, Australia, the Nordics and Canada beginning on Friday, September 10.

Details emerge on Ed Sheeran's new album

Ed Sheeran's new album ‘=’ (pronounced ‘Equals’) will be released on October 29 through Atlantic Records (pre-order HERE). The album track ‘Visiting Hours’ now has a performance video (watch HERE).

“‘=’ (Equals) is a really personal record and one that means a lot to me," Sheeran says in a press release. "My life changed greatly over the past few years – I got married, became a father, experienced loss, and I reflect on these topics over the course of the album. I see it as my coming-of-age record, and I can’t wait to share this next chapter with you.”

This is the fourth instalment in Sheeran’s symbol album series. The songs were made over a four year period following his ‘÷’ (Divide) album era.

‘Visiting Hours’ was inspired by the loss of Sheeran mentor and friend, Michael Gudinski, and written shortly after his passing. Performed for the first time at Michael’s State Memorial in March, the track, which is joined by a performance video (watch HERE), features backing vocals from Michael’s close friends, Kylie Minogue and Jimmy Barnes.

Written and recorded across Suffolk, London, Sweden and LA, the album’s executive production comes from Ed Sheeran, Johnny McDaid (Divide) and others. Sheeran’s brother, Matthew, a composer, also contributes string arrangements on ‘First Times’ and ‘The Joker And The Queen’. The album artwork is a collage of butterfly imagery symbolizing the albums’ thread of ‘new life’ and is backdropped by one of Ed’s own abstract paintings.

In June, Sheeran released the album’s lead single, ‘Bad Habits’, with a companion music video that has amassed over 120 million views ands received 3 nominations at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, including “Video of the Year.”

In his native UK, the track has spent seven consecutive weeks at #1, and is the fastest track to reach half a million sales this year. Looking ahead, Sheeran will play an intimate fan show at London’s O2 Shepherds Bush Empire on September 2 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his debut album ‘+’, before coming stateside for a nationally televised performance at the 2021 NFL Kickoff on September 9, ahead of the season opening game between the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Dallas Cowboys, airing on NBC.

Out now: Two new albums by Jude Cole

After a couple decades as a successful producer,
film composer, manager and more, Jude Cole is finally back to making his own music. His self-produced sixth album, COUP DE MAIN is out now on all digital outlets via Fresh Coffee Records. So is the self-produced COOLERATOR, a collection of covers of his favorite songs from the 1950s, also on all digital outlets.

“I never wanted to bookmark myself,” he explains in a press release. “I really do enjoy creating new music, and I don’t care to look back all that much. I have the Gold and Platinum records in my tank, but I don’t hang them on the walls. I don’t always like to look at past achievements — I prefer right now and a little of what’s next. I spent the last 22 years managing artists like Jason Wade and Lifehouse and being a very behind-the-scenes writer, producer and manager. For me, these two new solo projects allow me to do what I’ve always done creatively, but with a new ability to actually stand back and appreciate it.”

COUP DE MAIN encompasses a variety of styles. On “The Dark,” Cole gets assistance from acclaimed fellow producer/artist, Patrick Leonard. “We’ve been friends and very close neighbors for a long time, and he would literally walk his small synth down to my studio and plug in,” details COLE. “He did all the synth work on this song, and I think it’s one of the reasons it sounds the way it does. Patrick knew that’s what I was going for — and since he even produced Pink Floyd, he nailed it. He’s a wonderful, wonderful musician. I can’t say enough about him.”

Lifehouse drummer Ricky Woolstenhulme, Jr. gave COLE and Leonard all the space they needed on “The Dark” to really stretch things out. “I asked Ricky to listen to some specific Pink Floyd records,” he reveals. “I mean, Nick Mason plays everything so painfully simple. He allows all the moving parts to do their job because he’s not in the way. Rick took all that to heart. He gave us a consistent bed of ride cymbal, kick and snare, topped with a few timeless drum fills. It really was fun to emulate that ’70s sound.”

Then there's COOLERATOR, with his take on The Charts’ rare gem “Deserie” (“one of the most beautiful doo-wop songs ever”), “Dear Dad” and Guitar Slim’s “It Hurts to Love Someone (When They Don’t Love You).”

“'COOLERATOR' is a piece of work that’s been over ten years in the making — and it’s not any sort of epic work you would think would take me ten years,” he says with a hearty laugh. “It was really just a pet project in between a lot of other hats, inspired by the true heart and soul of ’50s and ’60s doo-wop music.”

The overall intention for COOLERATOR was to keep it simple and look for the right performance, “I always wondered how they made those records and why are they so soulful… why they’re so moving. When you hear about ’50s music, it’s often bobby socks and malt shops. I know that’s part of the Americana culture, but it doesn’t really reflect the groups that were singing on the street corners.”

Rolling Stones reissue news

This is exciting news about one of my favorite Stones albums - the first by the band that I ever bought as a kid...

The Rolling Stones' 40th anniversary, expanded deluxe editions of their chart-topping, multi-platinum 1981 album Tattoo You arrive via Polydor/Interscope/UMe on October 22. The newly-remastered set will be accompanied by nine previously unreleased tracks from the era. The first of these, “Living In The Heart Of Love,” is available now on all digital services, and Tattoo You (40th Anniversary Edition) is available to pre-order in multiple formats, HERE.

This news comes 40 years to the week since the album was first released on August 24, 1981, and as the rock 'n' roll legends prepare to return to the road with 13 new dates on the No Filter tour in the U.S. The new itinerary starts in September and extends into November.

On new editions of Tattoo You, the deluxe formats will also include Lost & Found: Rarities and Still Life: Wembley Stadium 1982. This has nine songs from the period of the album's original release, newly completed and enhanced with additional vocals and guitar by the band. Lost & Found include a version of “Shame, Shame, Shame,” first recorded in 1963 by one of the band's blues heroes, Jimmy Reed; their reading of Dobie Gray's soul gem “Drift Away;” and a reggae-tinged version of “Start Me Up.”

Still Life: Wembley Stadium 1982 from the Tattoo You tour is a 26-track set.

Polydor/Interscope/UMe's Tattoo You (40th Anniversary Edition) follows the 2020 reissue of the Stones' 1973 landmark Goats Head Soup, which took the album back to No. 1 in the U.K. This marked the second time their catalog had produced a U.K. chart-topper twice over, after 2010's deluxe edition of their 1972 staple Exile On Main St.

On first release, Tattoo You, produced by the Glimmer Twins with associate producer Chris Kimsey, topped the charts in the U.S. (where it went quadruple platinum), Canada, Australia and across much of Europe, with gold and platinum awards around the world.
