The 2001 debut release ‘Asleep in the Back’ was co-produced by Ben Hillier (Blur, Doves, Depeche Mode), Steve Osborne and elbow. It contains the singles "Newborn," "Red" and "Powder Blue" and led to Mercury Award and Brit Award nominations. The double sided single (remember those?) featuring the title track and "Coming Second" reached #19 in the U.K. The gold-certified album closes with perennial fan favorite "Scattered Black and Whites," revisited by elbow in lockdown for their 2020 elbowrooms sessions.
Two years later, ‘Cast of Thousands’ arrived. Again coproduced by elbow and Hillier, it spawned another U.K. top 20 single in "Fallen Angel." The figurines Elle and Bo on the cover were made into life-sized statues and caused traffic jams when placed next to the British motorway during festival dates to promote the album. Taking its title from the vocal contributions of the Glastonbury crowd to the song "Grace Under Pressure," recorded in a landmark performance on The Other Stage in 2002, the album artwork featured the names of all those who contacted the band to say, ‘yes, I was there and singing.’ "Fugitive Motel" was featured during the elbowrooms recordings.
2005's ‘Leaders of the Free World’ became elbow's third gold-certified album in a row. It was the first to be recorded at elbow’s current home, Blueprint Studios, Manchester, and was co-produced by the band and Tom Rothrock (Beck, Foo Fighters) with additional production by Marius de Vries (Bjork) and mixed at LA’s legendary Sunset Sound Studios. Accompanied by full-length film from collaborators Soup Collective on its release, the album contains several tracks that grace elbow sets to this day including "Great Expectations" and "Station Approach."
All three above have been pressed on heavyweight vinyl.
The 2012 B-sides compilation 'Dead in the Boot' featured "Snowball" - from the "Help! A Day in the Life" charity album among the 13 tracks.
On 2014's 'The Takeoff and Landing of Everything,' the quintet's keyboardist Craig Potter took over the production reigns. They utilized an orchestra on three tracks, while Doves singer Jimi Goodwin guested on "New York Morning." That tune resulted in elbow's first-ever radio hit in America, reaching the top 30 on Adult Album Alternative chart.
