Colin Meloy has recorded five songs from The Kinks' early works for the latest in his series of cover EPs.
Like previous releases in the series, which have paid tribute to Morrissey, Shirley Collins and Sam Cooke, Colin Meloy Sings The Kinks will be available for a limited time and sold only on his solo tour. See below for the track listing.
Meloy's acoustic version of "Do You Remember Walter?" is a song that appeared on 1968's The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, widely regarded as one of the English band's most influential albums.
"I'd always appreciated the genius of Ray Davies, but I'd never actually submersed myself and bothered to learn the songs," said Meloy. "These are good songs, folks. Really good songs. Bitter and wicked smart. And Dave Davies is an unsung hero."
Meloy, frontman and songwriter for The Decemberists, kicked off his first solo run in five years this week. He'll be playing songs from throughout his career, debuting new material and tossing an occasional Kinks song into the mix.
Tickets are on sale now. Eleanor Friedberger will be the supporting act for the November 2013 shows and John Roderick will support on the January 2014 dates. See below for itinerary. For tickets and tour information, visit http://www.colinmeloy.com/tour.
Meloy has recently been devoting time to The Wildwood Chronicles, a series of novels for children that he created with his wife, illustrator Carson Ellis. Wildwood Imperium, the third volume, will be published Feb. 4.
