Luka Bloom is set to release his latest project, Head and Heart, on May 6. The new album finds the veteran Irish singer/songwriter interpreting 10 well-known songs alongside a pair of self-penned ones.
Half of the album was recorded with The Phil Ware Trio, a jazz ensemble with whom Bloom had never played, and he describes the entire recording process as an unforgettable experience.
"Completely out of my comfort zone, in a studio I've never used before, singing with musicians I had never met before and performing without rehearsal…. I love everything about this record," says Bloom.
Classic songs covered on the album include "My Wild Irish Rose", "Danny Boy", "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and "Gentle on My Mind" – songs which Blooms says are "simply songs I loved before I ever sang them."
The two originals both have an emotional underpinnings fans have come to expect of Bloom: "Liffeyside" is a tribute to the town of Newbridge and its surrounds where he grew up and "Give you Wings" is a lament to the tragic loss of life experienced by the Belgian families who lost children in a bus crash in Switzerland in 2012.
Luka Bloom began his professional musical career in the late 1970s. He began touring the US with the release of Riverside in 1990 and achieved international prominence with the critically-acclaimed Acoustic Motorbike in 1992. Bloom has been one of Ireland’s most respected contemporary folk artists for the past several decades.
