Next up in McCartney reissue series: Tug of War, Pipes of Peace

photo by Linda McCartney, courtesy MPL
MPL and the Concord Music Group are proud to announce two more landmark installments in the multiple GRAMMY-winning Paul McCartney Archive Collection.

On Oct. 2, Paul’s early ‘80s back-to-back classics Tug of War and Pipes of Peace will receive lavish multiple configuration reissue treatment including exclusive 2015 remixes of both the entire Tug of War album and the Pipes of Peace classic collaboration with Michael Jackson “Say Say Say,” a treasure trove of previously unreleased tracks and never before seen video, and much more.

Released in 1982, Tug of War was Paul’s first album following the break-up of Wings and his third solo LP overall. Hailed upon its release as “exquisitely crafted” by The New York Times and a “masterpiece” by Rolling Stone, Tug of War went to #1 in no less than nine countries. Tug of War yielded such classic tracks as Paul’s #1 duet with Stevie Wonder “Ebony and Ivory,” the top 10 single “Take It Away,” and of course “Here Today,” the conversation Paul never had with the late John Lennon that remains a staple of Paul’s live set to this day. Pipes of Peace, Paul’s fourth solo album, followed in 1983 and continued Paul’s early '80s run of platinum records. Singles from Pipes of Peace included the title track and of course Paul and Michael Jackson’s timeless “Say Say Say,” a multi-format global chart-topping smash continually cited as a landmark of that or any year--as recently as 2007, Vibe magazine rated “Say Say Say” as one of the greatest duets of all time.

As with the GRAMMY-winning Band On The Run and Wings Over America Archive editions, Paul personally supervised all aspects of these releases and their various formats, which include:

Tug of War will be issued as a 2-CD Special Edition comprised of the 2015 remix of the entire album, plus a second disc of bonus audio featuring eight previously unreleased demos of both album tracks and outtakes “Stop, You Don’t Know Where She Came From” and “Something That Didn’t Happen,” as well as demo and solo versions of “Ebony and Ivory” and more. The Tug Of War 3-CD/1-DVD Deluxe Edition adds the original 1982 album mix and a DVD featuring original music videos for the album’s singles and the brand new 18-minute documentary “Fly TIA—Behind The Scenes on Take It Away” featuring previously unseen archival footage. In keeping with the award-winning Paul McCartney Archive Collection standards, the Tug Of War Deluxe Edition will include a 112-page essay book and 64-page scrapbook, while the strictly limited run of 1000 Super Deluxe sets will arrive in a limited edition acrylic slipcase with five hand numbered prints of images from the Linda McCartney archive.

The Pipes of Peace 2-CD Special Edition is made up of the original album plus a 9-track bonus disc with such exclusive gems as a 2015 remix of “Say Say Say” by Spike Stent, unearthed demos of three album tracks and outtakes “It’s Not On” and “Simple As That,” the previously unreleased “Christian Bop” and more. The 2-CD/1-DVD Pipes of Peace Deluxe Edition features a bonus video disc comprised of the original promo clips for all three of the album’s singles, plus previously unreleased clips from Paul’s film archives. The Deluxe configuration will also include a 112-page essay book and 64-page book that takes the reader behind the scenes on the “Pipes of Peace” title track video shoot.

Both albums and their companion bonus audio discs will also be released as 2-LP 180-gram audiophile vinyl editions complete with gatefold sleeves and download cards. The newly remixed and mastered Tug of War and remastered Pipes of Peace will also receive standard and Hi Res digital releases, as well deluxe digital and Hi Res releases featuring all bonus audio.

Tug of War and Pipes of Peace are the newest installments in the acclaimed and ongoing Paul McCartney Archive Collection. The inaugural release in the series, the Deluxe Edition of Paul McCartney and Wings’ 1973 milestone Band on the Run, won the 2010 GRAMMY Award for Best Historical Album, while the Deluxe Edition Box Set of the 1976 classic live collection Wings Over America took the 2013 GRAMMY for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package. Previous releases in this ambitious reissue program encompassing 41 years of timeless material from the most successful songwriter and recording artist of all time include solo works McCartney and McCartney II, Paul and Linda McCartney’s RAM, and Wings’ Venus and Mars and At The Speed Of Sound.

Pavement double LP rarities compilation out Aug. 11

The Secret History, Vol. 1, a Pavement double LP rarities comp is now streaming via NPR First Listen. The 30 tracks, 25 of which will be available on vinyl for the first time ever, are all culled from the Slanted and Enchanted era (1990-1992) (and previously available on 2002’s Slanted & Enchanted: Luxe & Reduxe CD).

The deluxe double LP contains essays by Stephen Malkmus and Spiral Stairs, plus essays from Matador Records, Billions Corporation, and Drag City bosses, and a gorgeous gatefold designed by Rob Carmichael (Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors).

The strangest thing about Pavement? Not that there were ever many non-strange things about Pavement? Even though they made their era’s finest rock albums, the albums only told half their story. Pavement also made some of the Nineties’ best albums that never happened. Until now.

Every proper Pavement album, from the out-of-nowhere debut Slanted and Enchanted to the summer-upper Terror Twilight, was accompanied by a flurry of slay tracks and stray slack—songs that got scattered on B-sides, EPs, compilations, radio sessions. But Pavement were too busy writing and recording great songs to worry about where to stash them, and they moved too fast to leave a tidy trail. So they left these songs off their albums. Some never got released at all.

Pavement made five proper album-as-albums: Slanted and Enchanted (1992), Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994), Wowee Zowee (1995), Brighten The Corners (1997) and Terror Twilight (1999).

Each has its own sound. Each has its own legend. But each of their official albums has a shadow album—and it’s usually as strong as the album that actually did come out. It’s time for the world to hear the albums Pavement could have made, if they’d been a little less ambitious about music and a little more ambitious about the music business. If they’d been the kind of band to sweat the legacy. But if they were that kind of band, would they have written so many great songs? Much less these great songs? No.

Matador is finally releasing a series of these shadow albums. The first, naturally, is The Secret History, Vol. 1, collecting the songs that got away during the era of Slanted and Enchanted, which Stephen Malkmus, Scott Kannberg and Gary Young recorded on the cheaper-than-cheap in January 1991. The Secret History, Vol. 1 collects gems from Peel Sessions (“Kentucky Cocktail,” “Circa 1762”) and seven-inches (“Baptist Blacktick”) as well as live slop from the first European tours, with Mark Ibold and Bob Nastanovich in the fold. Some are outtakes from Slanted—imagine leaving these tunes off your first album, when as far as you know or imagine, it’s your only album.

These tracks (some of which had never been rumored among Pavement freaks) came out on the 2002 Slanted and Enchanted: Luxe & Reduxe double CD reissue. But they’ve never been separately available as an album in their own right, and many of them have never been on vinyl before.

A surprise EP from elbow

British band elbow have released the new Lost Worker Bee EP, comprised of four new tracks. It follows "What Time Do You Call This?" their recent contribution to the Man Up soundtrack. The release marks a welcome return to the format that characterized the band’s early work with the Noisebox, Newborn and Any Day Now EPs.

Singer Guy Garvey explains:

"[We] are involved in various solo projects and collaborative endeavors for the next few months and we just felt we really wanted to get ‘something’ away to tide fans over until the next album. We’ve always loved the EP as a format and we’ve enjoyed making this one so much I wouldn’t be surprised if there was another before long. All the songs on this EP are set in Manchester city center. Manchester’s symbol has been the worker bee for hundreds of years and the lead track is about finding love far away from home. Far from being just a stop gap this is one of our proudest releases."

The band will play London’s On Blackheath on Sept. 12.

The new EP is available as a digital download.

A video for "Lost Worker Bee," based on a script by Moose Allain and edited and produced by Meat Bingo with Sanjeev Kohli in the starring role, was released on July 24. Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmOYRsU-Ex4

Long awaited new music from Darlene Love

The first new album in decades from legendary vocalist Darlene Love, Introducing Darlene Love, is available for pre-order now at iTunes, Google Play, and Amazon.

Produced and arranged by artist/producer/E Street Band great Stevie Van Zandt, the album is comprised of all new recordings and features never-before-heard and classic songs from a superstar cast of songwriters eager to showcase one of the most seminal voices in music history.

Fans who pre-order the album will receive the Elvis Costello-penned first single “Forbidden Nights” as an instant grat track.

Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen contribute two tracks each to the 14-song album (released on Van Zandt’s Wicked Cool label in partnership with Columbia Records - see full tracklist below) with Stevie Van Zandt penning three songs. Other writers include Jim Webb, Linda Perry, Desmond Child, Joan Jett, longtime songwriting team Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, and Michael Des Barres, and more.

The captivating Love brings her iconic vocal delivery to each song, including “Night Closing In” (Bruce Springsteen,) “Still To Soon To Know” (Elvis Costello),“Love Kept Us Foolin’ Around” (Linda Perry), “Who Under Heaven” (Jimmy Webb), “River Deep, Mountain High” (Phil Spector/Jeff Barry/Ellie Greenwich), and “Sweet Freedom” (Barry Man/Cynthia Weil), among others. Inducted in to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2011, the New York Times has called the singer “a thunderbolt voice embedded in the history of rock n’ roll…” and Rolling Stone praised her trademark vocal style as “a rare instrument sturdy enough to vault over Phil Spector’s ‘Wall of Sound.’”

Love’s five-decade career spans some of the greatest signature moments in music, with the Los Angeles native nurturing her talent early as a member of the Blossoms, a local trio who began their career providing backup vocals for artists such as Sam Cooke and Bobbie Day. The Blossoms also were featured as part of the house band for the popular ‘60s music show Shindig, backing up many of the performers who appeared on the series.

She would go on to become one of the most sought-after singers in music history, recording with Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, The Beach Boys, Dionne Warwick, The Righteous Brothers, Tom Jones, and dozens of other vocal giants throughout her career. Her early work with pioneering producer Phil Spector on songs such as the trailblazing “He’s A Rebel,” “He’s Sure The Boy I Love,” and “Why Do Lover’s Break Each Other’s Hearts,” would garner her legend status. She is featured in the 2013 Academy Award and Grammy winning documentary ‘20 Feet From Stardom,’ chronicling the behind-the-scenes lives of background singers. Darlene’s annual holiday performance of her classic “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” on Late Night With David Letterman became a holiday viewing staple.

The prolific Van Zandt creates a compelling production aesthetic on Introducing Darlene Love, echoing the classic recording style of many early ‘60s pop standards on the forthcoming Columbia Records/Wicked Cool release, available Sept. 18.

Archival live box from The Jam due this fall

It has been 40 years since the classic The Jam line-up first started touring. The band had a phenomenal impact on pop music and wider youth culture. In their short career, they influenced a generation with their music, style, politics and inspiration.

With Somerset House’s current exhibition and Universal Music’s recent CD About The Young Idea which both trace the band’s story in hits and images – Universal Music Enterprises (UMe)/Polydor now announce a live box set on Oct. 30 that follows the journey through incendiary concert recordings.

Named after the legend painted on Paul Weller’s amp, Fire And Skill is a superb six-disc box set – featuring six previously unreleased concerts, one from each year of their major-label career.

1. Starting with an early gig at London’s famous 100 Club from 1977, the show featured took place 10 months after they first played the venue in November 1976, and was recorded for broadcast on American radio ahead of the trio’s inaugural visit to U.S. in October 1977 for a six-date tour.

2. A Music Machine show from 1978 featuring most of the band’s 2nd album – This Is The Modern World. This was The Jam’s sixth live show of the year and one of four low-key shows in the capital to fanfare their new “News Of The World” single under the banner ‘The London Blitz.’

3. Reading University – February 1979. Playing material from their breakthrough album All Mod Cons, this was The Jam’s first live appearance of 1979, and found the band in a radically different place to their showcase at the Music Machine 12 months before. In that time, their third album, All Mod Cons, had been released to critical acclaim, and their status as one of the New Wave’s most musically substantial and exciting bands had been secured. And Weller was still only 20 years old!

4. Newcastle City Hall – October 1980. This show previews songs from The Jam’s forthcoming album Sound Affects. In the time between the show at Reading University (on Disc 3) and this appearance at Newcastle City Hall 20 months later, there had been more extraordinary developments in the group’s world. Setting Sons, their fourth album, had given them the Top 3 UK hit “The Eton Rifles,” which was followed in February 1980 with the stirring No. 1 UK single, “Going Underground.” After three years on Polydor, The Jam had finally become the biggest group in the UK.

5. London’s legendary Hammersmith Palais – December 1981. Part of The Jam’s four consecutive nights, previewing material from the forthcoming final album The Gift. The shows took the innovative form of a ‘60s soul revue, showcasing new acts including Bananarama, Department S and TV21.

6. One of the band’s final ever gigs at Wembley Arena – December 1982. Late in 1982 The Jam announced they were splitting up - there would, though, be a final chance for fans to experience The Jam’s astonishing live shows, with a 14-date ‘farewell’ tour announced. The centrepiece was a five-night stand at Wembley Arena, the 10,000-capacity shed next to the London football stadium (the recording here is from the second date), the biggest live venue in the capital.

* Packaged in mini, lift-off lid box with 72-page, color hard-back book.
* Individual gatefold wallets for the discs, designed as facsimiles of the original tape boxes.
* Includes new essay, period photos, rare memorabilia and set of five postcard prints.
* Remastered at Abbey Road.
* Featuring stunning live versions of all the band’s classic hits and favorites of which only 11 tracks were previously released.

Dave Koz tour, all star studio pairings

Dave Koz just started a tour that arrives in Southern California later this month, with a stop at the Hollywood Bowl on Aug. 23.

His Collaborations: 25th Anniversary Collection, out now via Concord Records, shines a light on some of the saxophonist's most memorable creative partnerships, drawing from Koz's extensive catalog as well as other artists' recording projects.

The album, which is available HERE, also includes three new tracks. In the 25 years since the release of his self-titled debut album, Koz has forged a distinctive sound that merges the best elements of jazz, pop, R&B, soul and funk. Along the way, he's received nine Grammy nominations, charted seven No. 1 albums on Billboard's Current Contemporary Jazz Albums chart, toured the world and been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The collection's first single, "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher," is one of the newly recorded songs found on Collaborations: 25th Anniversary Collection. The track, which Koz recorded with Rick Braun and Kenny Lattimore, was #1 Most Added in its first week at Smooth A/C radio and went top 10 there. It also notched in the upper reaches of Billboard's Smooth Jazz National Airplay chart.

As his spirited new video shows, their special chemistry makes for an infectious rendition of the classic song, which was a No. 1 R&B hit for Jackie Wilson in 1967. The video was shot during rehearsals for the trio's tour.

They will also be part of the all-star lineup at the fourth annual In Concert For Cancer, a benefit concert that will take place on September 18 at Redhook Brewery in Woodinville, WA (just outside Seattle). In Concert for Cancer concert raises awareness and funding for childhood cancer treatment and cures, benefiting Seattle Children's Research Institute.

"Good Foot," which features keyboardist Jeff Lorber, who co-wrote the song with Dave, and Koz's soaring instrumental version of "Let It Go" from the 2013 Disney film, Frozen, are the other new songs appearing on Collaborations: 25th Anniversary Collection.

Previously released tracks feature Koz's classic collaborations with Herb Alpert, Eric Benét, David Benoit, Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox, Jonathan Butler, Brian Culbertson, Gloria Estefan, Heather Headley, Boney James, Toby Keith, Barry Manilow, Richard Marx, Johnny Mathis, Maysa, Michael McDonald, Marcus Miller, Keb' Mo', Stevie Nicks, Rod Stewart, Summer Horns, Luther Vandross, BeBe Winans and Stevie Wonder.

"Some of my favorite moments in the last 25 years have been collaborations with people whom I just love and treasure, and from whom I've learned so much - mentors and friends and people whom I never would have expected to meet," says Koz. "And that's the power of music. It will come up against any wall that can divide people and bring it right down."
