Record Store Day - April 2026 news: Rare titles from The Blasters, Romeo Void

As usual, the label has more cool Eighties-centric rock/alternative releases on tap...

Liberation Hall has announced a pair of titles for Record Store Day, the annual retail event which celebrates independent record stores in the U.S. and abroad. Record Store Day is set for Saturday, April 18. Liberation Hall will issue a double LP of previously unreleased live recordings from San Francisco new wave rockers Romeo Void, alongside the final installment in a wide-ranging catalog campaign from Los Angeles’ the Blasters. Both titles will be distributed by MVD Entertainment.

ROMEO VOID – Live ’81-‘85

In 2023, Liberation Hall released Live from Mabuhay Gardens, the first official concert recording from Romeo VoidThat first RSD exclusive is now set to be followed by another limited-edition release.

Live ’81-’85 captures Romeo Void performing in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Albany, New York, as well as farther afield in London and Berlin. The 17-track set brings together songs from all three of the band’s studio albums — It’s a Condition (1981), Benefactor (1982) and Instincts (1984) — and features band members Debora Iyall (vocals), Frank Zincavage (bass), Peter Woods (guitar), Benjamin Bossi (saxophone), Larry Carter (drums), and Aaron Smith (drums).

The deluxe double-LP package will be pressed on black vinyl and available in a gatefold sleeve designed by Zincavage and Skott Reader. The cover art is an homage to the band’s breakout record, 1981’s “Never Say Never” EP. The record’s inner bag will feature lyrics, rare photos and memorabilia. Live ’81-’85 will also be available on CD and digital. Digital single “Never Say Never” is available now.

NEKO CASE ON ROMEO VOID:

“Live ’81-’85 captures that sweet spot after the record is made where you tour until the songs come out of you like a gorgeous martial arts drill and you wish you could go back and record them all over again. Debora Iyall’s vocals are so confident and commanding. She is one of those singers who make me wonder how much less myself I would be if they hadn’t been there.”

THE BLASTERS – Rare Blasts: Studio Outtakes and Movie Music 1979-1985

A crown jewel in last year’s Record Store Day roster, An American Music Story: The Complete Studio Recordings 1979-1985, was a comprehensive 5-LP overview from Los Angeles roots-rock legends the Blasters. This deluxe box set was an immediate sellout, and over the past six months Liberation Hall has kept busy reissuing the five titles as standalone releases.

The final entry from that box set, Rare Blasts: Studio Outtakes and Movie Music 1979-1985, arrives on April 18. It will be available on translucent cobalt blue vinyl with an inner sleeve showcasing rare photos, memorabilia, and liner notes essay by co-producer Chris Morris. Digital single “Can't Stop Time” is available now.

Formed in Downey, California, the Blasters lineup throughout their 1980s heyday comprised vocalist Phil Alvin, Grammy Award-winning songwriter and lead guitarist Dave Alvin, drummer Bill Bateman, bassist John Bazz, keyboardist Gene Taylor, and saxophonists Lee Allen and Steve Berlin.
