Back in April, 1990, the LA-via-New Jersey alt-rock band performed at a large concert celebrating the 20th anniversary of Earth Day held at San Francisco’s Crissy Field. The enormous amount of trash left behind by the audience was appalling; the debris and disregard for the message of the event confounded Dramarama founder/singer/songwriter, John Easdale.
So he wrote “What Are We Gonna Do?” What doesn’t he do? He doesn’t check the calendar. And sadly, over the years, that lapse of calling Earth Day "April 21" has gotten more attention than the message.
With the hope of re-focusing attention on the message, the band decided to celebrate with two new versions of what’s come to be known as “The Earth Day Song” among fans 30 years after the original recording reached Top 10 on Billboard’s Modern Rock chart.
Utilizing the original tracks, Easdale has slightly revised the lyrics, and also created a new “Stripped Mix” that features Peter Wood’s acoustic guitar and shines a spotlight on the exquisite Hammond and piano of Benmont Tench (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers). Songwriting royalties from these new versions will be donated to Pure Earth.
The band's most recent album is 2020's critically-acclaimed Color TV.
