Olivia Newton-John's 'Physical' gets deluxe reissue this month

Four-time Grammy Award-winner Olivia Newton-John will release a deluxe edition of Physical to mark the album’s 40th anniversary of its original release in October 1981. This deluxe CD and DVD edition features the original hit album fully remastered, bonus tracks, remixes, and live recordings.

Additionally, it will include the pop star’s two video collections – the Physical video album – which won the Grammy Award for Video of the Year - showcasing music videos for each of the album’s timeless tracks - a first for of its kind, as well as the full Olivia: Live in Concert Grammy-nominated television special which features exclusive footage of the star performing her hits.

The CD/DVD collection will be released via Green Hill Productions, a subsidiary of Primary Wave, on October 22. A limited-edition vinyl release of the original album set for release in Spring 2022 is available for pre-order.

“It’s hard to believe that it has been 40 years since Physical was first released and I am thrilled that it’s getting this beautiful 40th anniversary Deluxe Edition,” said Olivia Newton-John. “I am so proud of this record as it not only allowed me to try new things musically, but it became such a part of pop-culture history. It also gave me the chance to work (again) with fellow Aussies - my amazing friend, songwriter and producer John Farrar and Steve Kipner, who co-wrote ‘Physical’. I remember being so nervous that I had ‘gone too far’ with the title song’s ‘cheekiness’ that I told my manager at the time, Roger Davies, to pull it off the album. He laughed and said ‘luv, it’s too late it’s gone to radio and is climbing the charts!”

Not only did “Physical” become a part of pop-culture and help ignite the 80s aerobic and fashion crazes (the latter thanks to Newton-John’s longtime-costume designer Fleur Thiemeyer), it went on to become the biggest hit of the 1980s, spending more time on the Billboard charts than any other song of the decade. “Physical,” is the most successful solo hit of Newton-John’s career and spent 10 weeks on the top of Billboard’s Hot 100, from November 21, 1981, through January 23, 1982.

The hit song was so suggestive that it was banned by many radio stations across the globe, as well as the entire country of South Africa – something Newton-John is proud of today.

“I was banned for ‘Physical’ – can you imagine? – I can actually say I was banned!” laughed Newton-John. “That song is a lullaby compared to what’s on the radio today!”

The “Physical” phenomenon continues even today, with artists such as Dua Lipa and Miley Cyrus paying homage to the hit song and introducing Olivia to a new generation.

The “Deluxe Edition” of Physical also features a DVD with Newton-John’s Grammy-nominated Live in Concert television special filmed in Ogden, Utah, and the Grammy Award winning Physical video album – which was a first of its kind. Newton-John was one of the first artists to invest in music videos, starting with her 1978 album Totally Hot, which featured videos for all of the singles from the album.

For the “Physical” music video Newton-John told director Brian Grant that she wanted to tone down the sexiness of the song’s lyrics by making a video about exercise, which made it even sexier. The music videos from the Physical album were one of the firsts to present a plot line, and not just a video of the artist performing the song. Early on, a big supporter of music video industry, Newton-John was quoted by Billboard about the Physical video album production: "I think this is the way albums will go in the future: visuals with the music. I got to be a different personality and play another side of myself.”

Today Newton-John shows no signs of slowing down. In November 2020, she established the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, an independent charity sponsoring global research into plant medicine for cancer. These investments in new scientific research will educate patients and their caregivers about kinder options for treating cancer. The charity is committed to realizing a world beyond cancer.
