Heart's Ann Wilson revels in 'Fierce Bliss'

Ann Wilson's third full-length solo album Fierce Bliss, slated for April 29 through Silver Lining Music, features covers of Queen’s “Love of My Life” and Robin Trower’s “Bridge of Sighs.”

The Heart vocalist says of the remakes:

“I had the idea for the Queen song “Love of My Life” as a duet, so I just tried to picture who would be ‘the male angel’ that would sing the other part of it? I thought how great the song would be if it was stripped down and just sung with soul, and it had to be Vince Gill because he’s got that voice, that soul. “Bridge of Sighs” in my opinion is the best blues song ever written. That’s really saying something because it’s the vastness of the blues world, but this song is about true existential dread. It isn’t just you’re hurt because you lost your boyfriend or girlfriend, you’re on the edge of the abyss. I like stuff that goes all the way, I’m one of these people that halfway is not good enough. So with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, one of the coolest monster guitar players around, it just made so much sense, and he tore it up. One of the most rewarding things for me as a singer, to not be hurried. The best singers are the ones who can sing ballads and really make it work, because you don’t have to be a genius to be a rock shouter or sing rock songs. But that ballad, where it’s slowed down or stopped and you’re center stage with the spotlight? Every little nuance is important, and I think that’s what “Bridge of Sighs” was for me.”

Special guests on the album include
Vince Gill, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Warren Haynes of Government Mule.

The album artwork is by artist Roger Dean, who aside from his work in fantasy art is also renowned for his Yes sleeve artwork. “When I came up with the title Fierce Bliss, something in my soul just started thinking about those Yes covers like Tales From Topographic Oceans, and I just thought that would be perfect. We found him and I think you can tell from the look of the work it’s done with joy.”

Wilson is hitting the road with her new band.

“Tom Bukovac on guitar, Tony Lucido on bass, Sean T. Lane on drums, and Paul Moak on keyboards/other guitar/mandolin, are the guys that’ll be out with me on tour, and we’re doing a mix of stuff from Fierce Bliss, a few other songs we like, and there will be Heart songs too. It’s going to be a proper evening, not real flashy and splashy, but with musicianship on this level, believe me it is going to be quite amazing.”

Delta Spirit's new album arrives in May

Delta Spirit's new album One is One is due on May 20 via New West Records. It was produced by the band and Jason Kingsland (Band of Horses, Belle and Sebastian). One is One follows their 2020 New West debut What Is There.

Frontman Matthew Logan Vasquez explains, “One is One essentially says, ‘What is life all about? Here are some observations.”

The video for the first single “What’s Done is Done” depicts a heartfelt and touching love story of a couple with Down syndrome and stars Jamie Brewer (American Horror Story) and Zack Gottsagen (The Peanut Butter Falcon). It was written and directed by the band’s longtime collaborator Michael Parks Randa and produced in partnership with the Global Down Syndrome Foundation (GLOBAL).

Vasquez says, “Before starting Delta Spirit, I worked in an adult transition program for people with disabilities and it was such a rewarding experience. As a society, we really underestimate the capabilities of the disability community, especially in the creative arts. We've been collaborating with Randa for years, and after seeing his inclusive film Best Summer Ever, we were energized by the idea of doing our part to help further inclusion in the music industry. When he brought Zack and Jamie to the table to tell a love story between two people with Down syndrome, the band was so excited. They're both incredibly talented - I loved Peanut Butter Falcon and American Horror Story. Having a niece with Down syndrome, it's really important for her to see herself on screen and feel included and to know that an amazing organization like the Global Down Syndrome Foundation is working hard to create a brighter future for her.”

Director, Michael Parks Randa, said “My parents have run a day program for people with disabilities in Massachusetts for the past 50 years, so inclusion and authentic representation in the film industry has always been an initiative for me as a filmmaker. With inclusive films like CODA and Crip Camp getting recognized at the Oscars, it's encouraging to see some progress being made in the film industry, but it's much harder to identify progress in the music industry. We hope that the existence of this music video will encourage labels and artists to think in more inclusive terms going forward and that people will support the Global Down Syndrome Foundation."

Formed in Southern California in 2005, Delta Spirit took an extended break after supporting their acclaimed effort Into The Wide. “In 2015, we were getting along like a family gets along,” admits Vasquez. “That means sometimes we didn’t like each other too much. We were just growing apart. When we took a break and the band stopped, the friendships got an opportunity to come back.”

Since their formation, they’ve played the stages of festivals such as Coachella and Lollapalooza, as well as television shows like Jimmy Kimmel LIVE!, Jools Holland, and Austin City Limits. Meanwhile, the group has had syncs on television shows like Friday Night Lights.

Throughout the summer of 2020, Vasquez and drummer Brandon Young recorded an initial version of the album in Austin, TX and then sent it to the rest of the band, perfecting the songs over time. With Vasquez in Austin, Young in Chattanooga, multi-instrumentalist Kelly Winrich & guitarist Will McLaren in New York City, and bassist John Jameson in Montreal, the musicians congregated for sessions in New York and Vermont. They expanded the sonic palette by incorporating soundtrack-style elements more than ever before. “Our cup of tea is making epic and cinematic music, Vasquez says. “We’ve always been like that. We try to put our listeners in their own movie.”

“This music was adventurous for us,” Vasquez leaves off. “It’s full of positivity and beauty. I hope those feelings are reflected back for people.”

After multiple appearances at the SXSW Music Festival last week, Delta Spirit are currently on tour.

The Unlikely Candidates take a musical trip to 'Panther Island.'

I interviewed the band in 2019 (see elsewhere on this blog), so I'm really interested in hearing the new album...

Texas-based alt-rock band The Unlikely Candidates released a preview of their full-length album, “Panther Island.” It is first single “Sunshine,” lead single from the album due May 20. Fans can find the band’s latest single, as well as pre-order the album, on all major music platforms such as Apple Music, Spotify, and more.

“Panther Island'' includes previously released singles and new songs written and refined from lessons learned throughout their time in the industry. “High Low,” a previously released single that will be featured on the album, was recorded in lead singer Kyle Morris’ Texas apartment.

“The record is a kaleidoscopic landscape of genre and style that changes from song to song, a greatest hits of the sonic worlds the band has inhabited over the years,” says Morris.

“Thematically it’s just as varied, shifting from songs about the chaos on the streets and loneliness behind the phone screens of America during the pandemic, to humorous tales of twenty-something malaise and the many ways the heart breaks; when love or loved ones are lost. At the heart of this album is the ethos of taking a bad situation and making something of it. It was written during the pandemic while the world was shut down, by a band who has hit enough roadblocks to delay a debut album nine years.”

“Sunshine,” written by Morris and Derek Fuhrmann, is a nostalgic song about wishing to go back to a time when things felt a little easier and the world was more hopeful. Morris calls this his “apocalypse song” that “tries to capture the paranoia and loneliness of feeling trapped in a room, viewing the world from a phone.”

Signed to Another Century, a subsidiary of Sony Music, The Unlikely Candidates are best known for their 2019 hit “Novocaine,” which reached #1 on the Alternative Charts. With nearly a million monthly listeners on Spotify, the band is currently on tour, opening for 311’s Spring Tour.

They will also be headlining their shows at Smith’s Olde Bar in Atlanta, GA, and Tulips FWT in their hometown of Fort Worth, TX.

“Panther Island” is available for pre-order.

Rufus Wainwright news

Grammy Award-nominated singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright has announced the release of Rufus Does Judy at Capitol Studios, an all-new performance of his tribute to Judy Garland, Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall, recorded last year at Los Angeles’ famed Capitol Studios.

Rufus Does Judy at Capitol Studios arrives via BMG on Friday, June 10, celebrating the legendary Garland’s 100th birthday. Pre-orders are available now.

“The Man That Got Away” is available now at all DSPs and streaming services; an official live performance video is at YouTube.

WATCH “THE MAN THAT GOT AWAY”

First presented last year as a virtual livestream concert event, Rufus Does Judy at Capitol Studios sees Wainwright using the very microphone Garland herself used while making her own historic recordings at Capitol Studios, backed by a four-piece jazz ensemble before a micro-audience comprised entirely of 2x Academy Award-winning actress Renée Zellweger, winner of 2020’s “Best Actress” Oscar for her spectacular performance as Garland in 2019’s Judy.

A duet rendition of “Happy Days Are Here Again/Get Happy” is performed alongside award-winning Concord recording artist Kristin Chenoweth.

“I am still awed by Rufus’ voice just as I was 22 years ago in a friend’s living room where I heard him perform for the first time,” says Zellweger. “Witnessing Rufus do the entire Judy Garland Carnegie Hall show was the most special day and I loved sharing the time.”

“In terms of actually fundamentally knowing these songs, honestly feeling them in my bones, Judy Garland has always had a good 30 year leg up on me and despite my valiant attempts, she will always be the Queen,” says Wainwright.

“Listening back to my latest renditions of some of these amazing numbers, I was slightly taken aback...in a good way. I don’t know if it’s the paired down arrangements, my own as well as the planets trials and tribulations, or the fact that everyone but myself were required to record these tracks with masks on (playfully emblazoned with Judy’s likeness mind you). But, there is a darker quality to these renditions, a measure of pain involved that in almost every other aspect of life can prove burdensome, except for in the act singing. I now know these songs and definitely feel them deep in my bones.”

Rufus Does Judy at Capitol Studios – which marked a rare complete performance of Wainwright’s now-legendary homage to 1961’s Judy Garland At Carnegie Hall – showcases a selection of standards spanning swing, jazz, and pop, including three songs by George & Ira Gershwin, two Rodgers & Hart classics, two from Howard Dietz & Arthur Schwartz, plus favorites by Harold Arlen, Yip Harburg, Irving Berlin, Noël Coward, and more. Highlights include such Garland signature songs as “The Man That Got Away,” “Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart,” “Swanee,” and of course, “Over The Rainbow.”

Wainwright’s sixth full-length release and first live album, Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall was recorded and produced by Phil Ramone over two sold-out nights at Carnegie Hall, backed by a full 36-piece orchestra and special guest appearances from his sister Martha Wainwright, his mother Kate McGarrigle, and Garland’s daughter, Lorna Luft.

The album earned Wainwright his first-ever GRAMMY® Award nomination (for “Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album”).

Due to popular demand, Wainwright recreated his momentous tribute to Garland with sold-out, star-studded performances at such renowned venues as Paris’ L’Olympia, Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl, and the London Palladium, the latter of which was filmed and released on DVD as Rufus! Rufus! Rufus! Does Judy! Judy! Judy!: Live from the London Palladium.

Wainwright will further celebrate Garland’s centenary with a pair of exclusive live residencies, Rufus Does Judy at City Winery, set for City Winery in New York City (June 5, 7, 8, 10) and Chicago (June 16-17). Wainwright and his band will perform two shows each night, with early sets covering songs from “When You’re Smiling” to “San Francisco” and late shows featuring “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love” to “Chicago,” with additional surprise numbers during both sets. For complete details and remaining ticket availability, please visit rufuswainwright.com/tour.

Meanwhile, Wainwright is currently back on the road with his Unfollow The Rules Tour, set to return to North America for a series of West Coast and Canadian dates through late May. The upcoming run – which will see Wainwright performing classic songs, fan favorites, and tracks from his highly praised new album, 2020’s GRAMMY® and Juno Award-nominated Unfollow The Rules – begins with three very special solo performances in Canada followed by a full-band tour backed by his brand-new live combo, Brian Green (John Legend, Michael Bublé) as music director, guitar and backing vocals; Jacob Mann on keyboard, piano and backing vocals; and Alan Hampton on bass, guitar, ukulele and backing vocals.

In addition, Wainwright will present his acclaimed 2018 opera, Hadrian, with a special one-night-only performance at Madrid, Spain’s historic Teatro Real on July 22. Wainwright will also team up the Los Angeles Phil for an exclusive performance set for L.A.’s Walt Disney Concert Hall on June 2, 2023.

Working Men’s Club next album set for summer

Working Men’s Club's second album Fear Fear will be released on July 15 via Heavenly Recordings.

Their self-titled debut album, released in summer 2020, saw singer and songwriter Syd Minsky-Sargeant processing a teenage life in Todmorden in the Upper Calder Valley. He was 16 when he wrote some of those songs; now 20, he had to get up and out of the Valley.

“The first album was mostly a personal documentation lyrically, this is a blur between personal and a third-person perspective of what was going on.” Fear Fear documents the last two years. Yes, there is bleakness – but there is also hope and empathy.

“I like the contrast of it being happy, uplifting music and really dark lyrics. It’s not a minimal record, certainly compared to the first one. That’s because there’s been a lot more going on that needed to be said.”

Fear Fear was produced by Ross Orton (Arctic Monkeys) and recorded at Orton’s studio in Sheffield. Working Men’s Club's first single from the album is “Widow.”

Timothy B. Schmit (Eagles) enlists all-star guests Lindsey Buckingham, Jackson Browne, John Fogerty, others, for solo album 'Day by Day' in May

TIMOTHY B. SCHMIT of the Eagles has a new solo album, DAY BY DAY, out May 6. The first single and video is “Simple Man.” Watch the video here and listen here.

The track has electric guitar leads from Lindsey Buckingham and vocal harmonies from Beach Boys touring band alumni Chris Farmer and Matt Jardine. The song nods to the singer, songwriter and bassist’s California roots, summoning up the glory days of the Laurel Canyon folk scene.

The "Simple Man" video was directed by Ava Warbrick, who says, “I wanted to create a contemplative mood. Like a meditation. Slow panning shots in a rotating motion to illustrate the passing of time. The three Timothy's are evocative of the harmonized vocals. We shot the music video on 16mm Kodak film to give room and texture to the California landscape and to elicit a nostalgia. A slow burn for reflection. The video, shot in and around Timothy's music studio, to me feels like an authentic document of the space and this moment in time.”

DAY BY DAY is TIMOTHY’s seventh solo album and first since 2016’s Leap of Faith. He recorded the album’s 12 songs during breaks in the Eagles' schedule, utilizing his home studio--nestled into a rural pocket of Los Angeles County, with the Santa Monica Mountains looming outside.

His third consecutive self-penned album has guests like Jackson Browne, Lindsey Buckingham, John Fogerty, Benmont Tench, Jim Keltner, John McFee and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

"I still think of myself as a developing songwriter," he admits. "When Jackson [Browne] came to the studio, we talked about how he wrote 'These Days' when he was 16 years old. It's so impressive that a teenager could create something so insightful. That didn't happen to me. I didn't hit my stride as a songwriter during my younger years. I think I'm finally starting to get there now, and I'm in my 70s! It's really nice. It makes me anxious to move forward and continue making music.”

Making DAY BY DAY at home allowed SCHMIT to take stock of the world around him. The wide stretch of state-protected land that surrounds his studio—including an old millstone hidden in a nearby meadow, left behind by the Chumash people—inspired the song "Grinding Stone," the chorus for which features the vocal blend of SCHMIT, Jackson Browne and John Fogerty.

Elsewhere, the challenges of the Covid-19 era compelled him to turn "The Next Rainbow" into an anthem about seizing the day and counting one's blessings. He also found a muse in his wife, as well as an indispensable harmony partner in his daughter, Jeddrah. Pulling triple-duty as the album's singer/songwriter, co-producer (with Jeff Peters), and multi-instrumentalist, SCHMIT created DAY BY DAY without having to leave the environment that inspired much of the album's material.

"I try to latch on to whatever's floating my way through the ethers," says TIMOTHY of his songwriting process. "I just want to make good music and put a smile on people's faces. I love the process and feel extremely lucky to be able to make new music as an older guy, and this is very satisfying."
