Alice Merton readies 'Mint' for January release

Alice Merton has shared her new single entitled "Funny Business." When talking about the track Alice says, "I’m not someone who messes around, nor do I like being messed around with. My gut will always tell me if something makes sense or not. Who I should and shouldn’t trust. I can promise you one thing in life… I don’t do funny business."

The single will be featured on upcoming album Mint, which is out Jan. 18 via Mom+Pop Music. Recently Alice's breakout single "No Roots" was certified gold by the RIAA. Check out Alice's upcoming tour dates below and pre-order Mint here.

About Alice Merton:

The chart-topping singer-songwriter wrote her most euphoric, pop-friendly track to date at a time when critics and hot-takers seemed intent on sucking the joy out of everything.

“I kept getting asked in interviews, ‘Do you think you’re gonna be a one-hit wonder?’” Alice Merton laughs. “I went into the studio and said, ‘Music is supposed to be fun! We don’t write songs to be hits, we write songs so we feel good.’”

Out came "Why So Serious."

“Some talk about growing up and moving around a lot,” the English-German artist (who once moved 12 times over 24 years) observes, “But a lot of others discuss the struggles we’ve had with starting a label, the feeling of trying to prove yourself to everyone.” While studying at University of Popular Music and Music Business, Alice Merton founded Paper Plane Records Int. with her best friend and manager Paul Grauwinkel, while crafting songs alongside co-writer and producer Nicolas Rebscher.

Label and radio reps scoffed at “No Roots” - It’s a minute too long! Take the guitars out! - but by the time it topped Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart in the U.S. and amassed over 142 million YouTube streams, naysayers turned to supporters.

Long safe from those one-hit wonder jabs (the fiery “Lash Out” followed “No Roots” as an alt radio staple) Mint finds Alice Merton progressing from the owner of a handful of hits to an accomplished album artist.

On “Funny Business,” she ventures outside her usual circle of collaborators and enlists Grammy-nominated producer John Hill (co-producer and co-writer of Portugal. The Man’s “Feel It Still”).

She has gone platinum in six countries, amassed over 261 million global streams, sold out headlining dates in New York and Washington, D.C., and has been appeared on The Tonight Show, Late Late Show and Live With Kelly and Ryan in America.

"It feels really relieving,” she affirms. “I’m excited we can finally put these songs out and even start working on the next chapter.”

David Archuleta to appear in San Bernardino, Calif. on Saturday

photo: Rachel Deeb
David Archuleta, best known as a second-place finalist on “American Idol” and for the top 10 single “Crush” in 2008, is currently on a Christmas tour. It includes a special headline show with the San Bernardino Symphony on Dec. 1.

During past orchestral shows, the Tennessee-based vocalist found “the experience of sharing the stage with so many other talented musicians was powerful.”

The rare Inland Empire appearance is slated to feature songs off both his Christmas albums. Archuleta is particularly excited to do selections from the new collection “Winter in the Air” because they were geared toward “a classic 1940s and ‘50s feel with string arrangements…I really love singing (the luxurious title track) live and bringing people into a winter wonderland,” he said.

Archuleta went for an old school style” in the vein of Nat King Cole and “timeless feel” on the new album. He co-penned vibrant opener “Christmas Everyday” alongside Grammy-nominated songwriter Dave Barnes (Blake Shelton, Thomas Rhett).

“I wanted to make the songs feel familiar, not just by the melody and lyric, but through the arrangements. “I had a lot of fun with it and the strings have that happy ‘classic Christmas’ feel to them.”

San Bernardino Symphony:
The program’s first half, with guest conductor Dean Anderson, will include music by Tchaikovsky, Vaughn Williams, Rimsky-Korsakov, Anderson and a Nilo Alcala world premiere. Archuleta performs during the second half.
When: 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1
Where: California Theatre of Performing Arts, 562 W. 4th St., San Bernardino
Tickets: $30-$65; $15 active military and students
Information: 909-381-5388, sanbernardinosymphony.org

Dolly Parton’s soundtrack for the Netflix film Dumplin’, produced by Linda Perry, has been released.

The album features We Are Hear artists (a record label and management company co-founded by Linda Perry and Kerry Brown) Dorothy, who performs with Macy Grey on the track “Two Doors Down” and Willa Amai who performs on “Here You Come Again.” Stream or download Dumplin’ here

"Working with Dolly Parton on the Dumplin' soundtrack was the highlight of my career,” says producer Linda Perry. We were like two peas in a pod. Although very different, we share the same passion for our art and creativity. It was certainly a plus having two of We Are Hear's artists be featured on a duet with Dolly on the soundtrack. Willa Amai doing "Here You Come Again" and Dorothy singing "Two Doors Down" also featuring Macy Gray."

For the Dumplin’ soundtrack, Dolly Parton teams with female artists including Miranda Lambert, Rhonda Vincent, Alison Krauss, pop superstar Sia and soul legend Mavis Staples, as well as Elle King, Willa Amai, and Macy Gray featuring Dorothy. The upcoming film tells the story of plus-sized teenager Willowdean Dickson, (Macdonald), nicknamed Dumplin’ by her mother, Rosie, a former beauty queen (Aniston). When she signs up for her mom’s pageant as a protest, she shakes things up in their small Texas town. Written for the screen by Kristin Hahn, it is based on author Julie Murphy’s 2015 young-adult novel of the same name, which topped the New York Times bestsellers list upon its release.

Former Yellowcard frontman William Ryan Key sings of 'Virtue'

William Ryan Key, the former singer of Yellowcard, just released Virtue, his second EP of the year via Lone Tree Recordings. It following the debut EP Thirteen and several tours this year with acts such as New Found Glory and Mayday Parade.

"When I first started making my own music earlier this year, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I think Virtue is an expression of discovery, and a statement that I am finding my own sound," he says. "These songs have helped me navigate the beginning of this new chapter in my life, but they are also an invitation to all of you to join me as I move forward. Thank you for listening.”

As for the song “Downtown (Up North),” Key says working on it was "
one of the coolest experiences of my musical career. For many years now, the music I listen to the most has been post-rock and instrumental. One of my favorite and most influential artists is Hammock. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Marc Byrd, one of the founding members, since I’ve moved to Franklin, TN. When I started writing for Virtue and had the demo for ‘Downtown’, I sent it to Marc and asked if he’d be interested in producing some cello for the song. I ended up getting to work with him and Hammock’s cellist, Matt Slocum [Sixpence None the Richer] on the track. I feel so lucky to get to work and collaborate with artists that inspire me."

While leading of one of the top alternative rock bands of the last two decades, he was able to feel the united front of his bandmates. But now, as a solo musician, Key has presented a vulnerable side.

“With Virtue, I wanted to explore and expand on the sound I’ve discovered both musically and lyrically," he says. "Similar to my first release, all of the songs came together in such a spontaneous manner. The recording sessions were very much driven by capturing what felt right in the moment, and moving on to the next idea."

Largely anchored in and around NYC landmarks (Broadway, The Bowery, The Turnpike, Downtown, and Upstate all make cameos), Virtue's instrumental track "The Same Destination” is something that Yellowcard has played with on past releases.

Like a proud father, looking back at his progeny, Ryan concludes, "I’m really proud of these songs, and I can’t wait for people to hear them.”

Track listing:

1. The Same Destination
2. Mortar and Stone
3. The Bowery
4. Virtue
5. Downtown (Up North)

NAMM '19 news: TECnology Hall of Fame inductees

Eight culturally-significant audio inventions will be inducted to the TECnology Hall of Fame (THOF). They span the 1940s through today and will be officially named during a ceremony held at The 2019 NAMM Show in Anaheim, California on Saturday, January 26. The event will be presented by the NAMM Museum of Making Music.

The TECnology Hall of Fame inductees for 2019 include: the anechoic audio test chamber (Leo Beranek, 1943); beyerdynamic M160 ribbon microphone (1957), Bell Labs’ electret microphone patent (1964), Robert Moog’s 1964 Modular Moog Synthesizer; iZ Technology’s RADAR (24-track disk recorder, 1991); Meyer Sound Labs Source Independent Measurement (SIM) system (1991); Millennia Media HV-3 microphone preamplifier (1992), and the JBL Professional VerTec line array live sound system (2000).

“Each of these innovations has made a major contribution to how sound is created and reproduced — even years after their debut,” says TECnology Hall of Fame Director George Petersen. “In fact, all of these technologies are still in use every day. For example, the patent for the electret microphone by Bell Labs’ Gerhard Sessler/James West not only paved the way for affordable studio microphones used by musicians onstage and in studios, but that same technology is still employed in every one of the nearly five billion cell phones on the planet.”

Inductees to the TECnology Hall of Fame are selected by more than 50 recognized audio experts that include authors, educators, engineers, and other professionals. Innovations must be at least 10 years old to be considered. Past honorees have ranged from the early Edison cylinder recorders to early microphone and sound system designs, to early-evolution tape recording devices, and products tied to key developments in digital audio workstations and software plug-ins.

Each inductee represents significant milestones and fascinating histories. The late Robert Moog is a household name for his music synthesizer development. His Modular Moog quickly became adopted by The Beatles, The Monkees, The Rolling Stones, Keith Emerson, and Wendy Carlos’ landmark Switched on Bach album.

Other inductees share long legacies. JBL’s VerTec sound system was first used to provide sound for the 2000 Democratic National Convention, tested before a worldwide audience. Millennia Media’s HV-3 was created by John LaGrou, a classical music engineer who was dissatisfied enough with the audio quality of commercial microphone processing to simply decide to create his own.

Petersen adds, “Perhaps more surprising: all of these products are still in production as working tools - a testament to their relevance.” Every brand, with the exception of Leo Beranek and Bell Labs, will be seen as exhibitors at The NAMM Show.”

The TECnology Hall of Fame ceremony will be held in the Hilton Anaheim, Room A5, Level 4, from 4-6p.m., Saturday, January 26, 2019. Seating will be on a first come, first served basis to all credentialed NAMM Show attendees.

Following the ceremony, the NAMM TEC Awards will be held in the Hilton Anaheim’s Pacific Ballroom. The show will be hosted by comedian Demetri Martin and begins with a VIP-only reception at 6 p.m., followed by the awards ceremony at 7 p.m. Purchase tickets on site or in advance here.

About the TECnology Hall of Fame:

Founded in 2004 by George Petersen and presented since 2015 by the NAMM Museum of Making Music, the TECnology Hall of Fame honors and recognizes audio products and innovations that have made a significant contribution to the advancement of audio technology. Inductees to the TECnology Hall of Fame are selected by a panel of more than 50 recognized audio experts, including authors, educators, engineers and other professionals. Products or innovations must be at least 10 years old to be considered for induction.

A ukelele tribute to Bruce Springsteen’s 'Born To Run' on the way in January

Bruce Springsteen’s classic 1975 album Born To Run has been recreated with ukulele, bass, percussion and vocals as Born To Uke, due out Jan. 18.

The album features Grammy winners Emily Saliers (The Indigo Girls) and Sara Watkins (I'm With Her, Nickel Creek), The Weepies, Will Kimbrough and more. All proceeds will benefit Little Kids Rock, funding music education in underprivileged public schools. The Bluegrass Situation premiered "Backstreets", performed by The Weepies – share via Soundcloud.

"The ukulele – assuming one of well quality and well played – is substantial and brings something to music that other instruments simply cannot," says Keith Metzger, the producer, and also a perfomer, on Born To Uke.

The project was recorded in pro and home studios in the Bay Area, Nashville, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Iowa City and even Iceland. It presents songs from the seminal album in a way they’ve never been played or heard before, with stark arrangements bringing emphasis to the lyrics, the meaning and message.

In terms of production and arrangements, the only direction offered to the artists was the “rule” that the recordings needed to be limited to ukulele, bass, vocals and percussion. Some of the recordings are sparse, as with "Backstreets", "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" and "Born To Run". The point was to build everything around the sound of the ukulele, and the only exception to the “rule” on the album is with "Jungleland" – where given the length and complexity of the song, a pump organ sound and a synth bass were used rather than an electric or acoustic bass.

Discussing the idea behind Born To Uke, Metzger stated, "I've always been a fan of Springsteen and at one point thought 'She’s The One' off of Born To Run might make a great cover, in the style I’d been recording. It had a Bo Diddley beat with a tribal feel to it that I thought lent itself thematically to the ukulele. After finishing the recording I thought: 'What if one were to do ukulele covers of the entire Born to Run album?' I didn’t have time or the patience to pull that off, and so I thought 'what about if other artists were involved?' The question then became: why would other artists of any note want to do it? At that time, I had become familiar with Little Kids Rock, knew that Bruce’s sax player Clarence Clemons had been involved in its founding, and it all kind of clicked for me."

Born To Uke is available for pre-order at BornToUke.com

Career retrospective of '80s hitmaker Franke & the Knockouts due soon; supports cancer organization

To some people, Franke & the Knockouts was that 1980s band led by the Jersey guy who would go on to win the Academy Award and Golden Globe for writing Dirty Dancing’s hit theme song, “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life.”

To others, it was that other New Jersey band that boasted Tico Torres as its drummer ― right before he joined Bon Jovi en route to superstardom.

And then there are those who still can’t shake that Top 10 smash “Sweetheart” from their brains, even though they might not remember the artist behind the band and its other Top 40 blue-eyed soul 1980s hits: “You’re My Girl” and “(Without You) Not Another Lonely Night.”

On Nov. 30 - almost 35 years since the arrival of the third and final album in the band’s blue-eyed soul trilogy - Friday Music is releasing the newly remastered ultimate collection, Franke & the Knockouts: The Complete Collection.

The deluxe three-CD set features all newly remastered tracks from the band’s three “lost” albums, Franke & the Knockouts (1981), Below the Belt (1982) and Makin’ the Point (1984) for the first time packaged together on CD, plus 11 bonus rare demo and unreleased recordings from Franke's personal archives, ranging from his early ‘70s hard rock band Bull Angus, into his late ‘70s solo R&B work on Buddha Records to his post-Knockouts ‘80s group Brave New World, as well as additional tracks from the ‘90s.

This new set also includes a bonus CD featuring six live performances compiled over the years by Franke just for this collection. As Franke points out, it was a fusion of Bull Angus’ harder edge and the traditional R&B sound of his solo recordings that brought the “Knockout punch” to the blue-eyed soul of Franke & The Knockouts.

There are contributions from the likes of Kasim Sultan (Todd Rundgren), Mark Rivera (Billy Joel), Jeff Porcaro (Toto), Nathan East (Eric Clapton) and Grammy-winning producer Tony Camillo (“Midnight Train to Georgia”), all of whom had roles in the recorded output found exclusively in this three-disc set.

“This collection also gives me a chance to re-live some of those moments hearing my voice at its best and being able to realize that I made a small little indentation to the music industry that some people still remember and enjoy,” says Previte.

“For years I’ve been getting emails from people all over the world who just love the music and are dying to know how they can get a hold of it. Some of the original records have been selling for a couple hundred bucks online, so I decided it’s time that I put out everything and make it special, affordable and accessible for fans of all generations.”

Previte is donating $1 of his proceeds from every sale to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, in memory of his courageous Dirty Dancing friend, the late Patrick Swayze.

“Pancreatic cancer ranks among the lowest of all cancers receiving government funding in finding a cure,” he says. “So it’s up to us. If we all could donate just $1, we’d give hope a real chance to conquer this horrific disease.”

These days, Previte is primarily focused as the creator and co-producer of Calling All Divas, a nationally touring new musical tale following four very different and remarkable women competing to become the world’s next female singing superstar. It’s a joyous celebration of music, friendship and the power of sisterhood in a pop, rock, soul, and country hit parade, transporting us all on a magical musical journey.

Franke & The Knockouts was a tremendous part of Previte’s own journey, integral in leading him to the Academy Awards and his latest chapter as a Broadway style musical producer.

Robert Ellis is the 'Texas Piano Man'

Robert Ellis is set to return with Texas Piano Man on Feb. 14 via New West Records. The 11-song set was co-produced by Ellis and Niles City Sound (Leon Bridges) in Fort Worth, TX and is largely comprised of songs written by Ellis, an accomplished guitarist, on grand piano.

Texas Piano Man follows Ellis’ critically acclaimed 2016 self-titled LP and single “California.” He likens the musical experience of making the new album to being behind the wheel of “a rock solid muscle car.” Hear lead off song, “F***ing Crazy” Here and see its video Here.

Talking about the state of Texas, he says, "people expect a certain thing and they want a certain thing, and I fought that for a long time...I’ve realized though that Texas shouldn’t be made a category. I want to redefine to the outside world what it means to be Texan a little bit.”

The cover artwork for the album features Ellis on top of a mountain in Marfa, TX, seated at a grand piano and wearing a white tuxedo. He describes the Texas Piano Man as the guy who wears the tuxedo everywhere.

“It’s more about a spirit,” he says, “than an aesthetic. There’s the classic play of the piano man, and with a little fashion behind it. I want you to listen to the songs. But also to see the rings and the glitz and the glamor.”

Robert Ellis’ Texas Piano Man will be available on CD, across digital retailers, vinyl and limited edition sky blue colored vinyl available at Independent Retailers and yellow rose of Texas colored vinyl directly from New West Records. Texas Piano Man is available for pre-order now via New West Records.

Dandy Warhols news

The Dandy Warhols mark their 25th anniversary with a new album, 'Why You So Crazy' (Dine Alone Records), a single-shot 360° short film featuring Mad Men’s Jessica ParĂ© for the single 'Be Alright,' and a 2019 tour of Europe, the UK and North America as well as exclusive goodies available via PledgeMusic.

“The weirdest thing about it being ‎our 25th anniversary is it doesn't feel like 25 years. Feels like about six. Or five,” muses frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor. The 360° short film for 'Be Alright,' which centers around the consumption of a magic wine, was done in a single shot and filmed at the band’s space, Odditorium, which includes a bar owned by Taylor-Taylor who has a deep passion for the wine world. Directed by Taylor-Taylor, the video was written and conceived by Kevin Moyer.

"Back in 2002, the Dandy Warhols bought a ten thousand square foot building in what was then industrial NW Portland and created The Odditorium, a place that soon became their band headquarters, recording studio, and hang out for them and all their friends and fellow artists,” says Moyer.

“I've been there many times and it is such a cool and ethereal place, full of psychedelia and gothic touches and auras, that it just makes your head spin trying to take all of it in as you walk through the unique rock n roll space. So what better way than to use a head spinning media format to take the viewer on a magical journey through the Dandy Warhols own space and sound, with the new single ‘Be Alright’ making things exactly that along the way."

“We’ve always been driven to create art with emotional clarity,” says Taylor-Taylor. “That’s what the world needs more than ever right now. I’ve never felt so strongly that people are losing their minds, and it’s more of them than ever before. Local politics, international politics, news programs, sitcoms, and our president all feel like the heat got turned up. It doesn’t feel like a natural progression of insanity, it just happened. Most people are behaving in a manner that can only be described as batshit crazy.”

The band is also hitting the road in 2019 (see below), with North American dates on sale this weekend.
