The return of Lavender Diamond

Lavender Diamond's first studio album in 8 years Now Is The Time is prefaced with the new single "This Is How We Rise." The Los Angeles-based trio of Becky Stark, Steve Gregoropoulos, and Ron Regé, Jr. will release the album on December 4, 2020 via Petaluma Records.

"Right before our current storm of catastrophe these songs came pouring in to us. These songs of healing for a world in crisis," explains Becky Stark. "Crisis holds profound opportunity for healing and transformation. Now is the most powerful time we have ever known to transform our world and to build justice, peace and prosperity for all by living in harmony and with love for the earth, embodying the wisdom of equality and respect for all."

The band captured the core of the album in just two days, with the material written well before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I came to this realization that there’s medicine in the music itself," says Stark. "It can lift people up and heal them and point them toward transformation, and that led me to this tremendously powerful need to start writing and recording again."

Now Is The Time was written and produced entirely by Lavender Diamond, and mixed by Tucker Martine at Flora Recording & Playback in Portland, OR. The album features contributions from Nathaniel Walcott (Bright Eyes), Sasami, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist Josh Klinghoffer.

Earlier this year, the band released the official video for "Look Through The Window," which was embraced by American Songwriter, BrooklynVegan, Stereogum, Pitchfork and many more.

5) Flashback

Neil Young archive news

Neil Young will release Return To Greendale, a live album and concert film of the 2003 tour for his 25th studio album, Greendale. Out November 6 via Reprise Records, the songs and performance revolve around themes of environmentalism, corruption, and the destructive effects of capitalism. Featuring Crazy Horse, the Toronto recording captures Young’s immersive, small-town rock opera.

Return to Greendale will be released in several formats. The limited-edition deluxe box set includes a Blu-ray of the full concert, two LPs and two CDs, and a DVD of Inside Greendale, a documentary capturing the making of the album. It will also be available separately on double vinyl, a two-CD set, and digitally on Neil Young Archives (NYA) and at all major DSPs.

Inside Greendale features footage of Young and Crazy Horse in the studio, mixed with segments from 2003’s Greendale fictional film. Both Inside Greendale and the concert film are directed by Bernard Shakey and produced by L.A. Johnson (Human Highway, Rust Never Sleeps). Click here to pre-order Return To Greendale.

The story of Greendale follows multiple generations of the Green family as they go about their lives in a fictional California town. Through the perspectives of multiple characters—Grandma, Grandpa, Edith, Earl, the doomed Jed, and eco-warrior Sun Green, among them—Young tells a story about small-town America and the need for immediate action to save the environment. That need, of course, has only become more urgent. On Return to Greendale, the 10 songs from Young’s original album are performed in sequence, with a cast of actors speaking the sung words.

Return to Greendale is the 16th installment in Young’s Performance Series. Previous installments have covered live moments from nearly every era of Young’s long-running career. Neil Young Archives was the first totally immersive fan-experience website and remains the only portal for all things Neil Young.

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings have a covers collection coming next month

Daptone Records will release Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Rendition Was In), a batch of previously unheard material by Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, out digitally Oct. 23.

The compilation includes five never-before-heard covers and other fan favorites that have been previously released in various formats - including lead single “Signed Sealed Delivered I’m Yours”, originally made famous by Stevie Wonder.

These covers span acts ranging from Gladys Knight to Janet Jackson to Woody Guthrie. Over two decades, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings built a reputation as studio aces, and this album compiles some of their most popular, as well as completely unreleased, renditions -- originally recorded on their own or for commercials, movies, and TV shows.

Often, in an effort to save the expense of licensing an original master from a major label, a music supervisor may request a song be re-created as closely as possible. Such was the case when a well-known bank asked the band to cut Stevie Wonder’s classic, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours” for a TV commercial, or when Hank Shockley asked for a perfect replay of Bad Medicine’s funky instrumental, “Trespasser” for the American Gangster soundtrack.

Both “Rescue Me” and “In the Bush” were among the outtakes on the cutting room floor of The Wolf of Wall Street motion picture soundtrack, for which the band recorded several unused sides.

“Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)” was not just a remake of the Kenny Rogers’ First Edition hit, but more specifically a near re-play of Bettye Lavette’s 1968 version, and was notably the very first recording done at the Daptone House of Soul studio in 2002.

Likewise, the band’s replay of Gladys Knight’s “Giving Up” was specifically requested but unused by a producer who was confident he needed it to sample for a beat on a Dr. Dre album.

“Little by Little,” “Inspiration Information,” “Here I Am Baby,” and “Take Me with U” were cut for tribute projects to Dusty Springfield, Shuggie Otis, The Marvelettes, and Prince, respectively. The latter of which is a perfect example of the way the band was able to take a familiar tune and completely flip it on it’s head.

Of course, there were also many non-contracted covers over the years that the band cut of their own volition, starting with the complete re-invention of Janet Jackson’s “What Have You Done for Me Lately” on the their 2001 debut LP, Dap-Dippin’ with..., which convinced more than a few fans that Sharon’s version was in fact the original after a counterfeit news article surfaced claiming that Jones was suing Jackson for copyright infringement. Sharon’s heart-wrenching take on Bob Marley’s early Wailers ballad “It Hurts to be Alone” is a tender nod to the soul that Jamaica borrowed from the States in the early sixties.

Though the band has mostly built their career on a prolific catalog of originals, these forays into other artists’ compositions lay bare their gift for arrangement and the unmatched studio prowess that earned them their reputation as The Baddest Band in the Land.

Just Dropped In… comes as Jones’ second posthumous release following the group’s most recent album, Soul of a Woman (2017). Jones passed away in 2016 from pancreatic cancer.

Track listing:

1. Signed Sealed Delivered I’m Yours
2. Little By Little
3. Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)

5. What Have You Done For Me Lately?

7. This Land Is Your Land (Digital Album Exclusive)
8. Inspiration Information
9. Giving Up
10. Rescue Me

Out now: 'Lost Songs Of Doc Souchon' from Squirrel Nut Zippers

Lost Songs Of Doc Souchon, the new album by
Squirrel Nut Zippers, is out now. It follows the band’s 2018 studio album, Beasts Of Burgundy, which was the first in 18 years and debuted at #4 on the Billboard Jazz Album Chart.

Order Lost Songs here: www.snzippers.com

“This new album was inspired by all of the mysterious characters from the history of New Orleans jazz music,” commented band leader Jimbo Mathus. “It speaks to the hidden roots of where our aesthetic, interests and philosophy comes from. It pulls on the hidden thread.”

Lost Songs Of Doc Souchon contains a combination of newly written Zippers material, along with a few songs from past times.

The Squirrel Nut Zippers began their musical journey in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in the mid 1990s. Mathus, along with drummer/percussionist Chris Phillips, formed the band as a casual musical foray among friends and family in the area. It wasn’t long before the band’s quirky mix of jazz chords, folk music, and punk rock leanings spread out of the region and attracted a national audience.

Between 1995-2000 the Squirrel Nut Zippers sold over three million albums. Their watershed album, Hot (1996) was recorded in the heat of New Orleans, fueled by a smoldering mix of booze and a youthful hunger to unlock the secrets of old world jazz.

This passion mixed with klezmer, blues and random bits of contemporary musical leanings became the bands signature style. At the time, there were few other bands inhabiting this space. The album would eventually break free of any “jazz” stereotypes and land on commercial radio, taking the band to remarkable heights for what was essentially an anti-establishment sound.

Track Listing:

Animule Ball (Unknown)
Can’t Take My Eyes Off You (Crewe/Gaudio, arr. Dr. Sick)

Mr Wonderful (Mathus)

Purim Nigrum (Unknown)

Larkin Poe go covers route on 'Kindred Spirits'

Larkin Poe are set to release Kindred Spirits, their first-ever covers album.

Out November 20, Kindred Spirits is a collection of stripped-back versions of both classic and new songs, and it follows the release of their fifth studio album, Self Made Man, released this past June on their own Tricki-Woo Records.

Self Made Man's first week of sales saw the album at the top of Billboard’s “Top New Artists Albums” and “Current Rock Albums” charts, while also climbing to #1 “Blues Albums” and #2 on the “Americana/Folk Albums.”

The duo shared the first song from Kindred Spirits -- The Moody Blues’ “Nights in White Satin.” Larkin Poe has been known to post covers on their YouTube channel where they recently performed the song, and the series has gained an expansive following. In a recent tweet, Justin Hayward from The Moody Blues praised their performance "Love it, love them, love them playing it. Thank you Rebecca and Megan."

Larkin Poe describe the song as deeply haunting, and a song that transcends genre. “We remember hearing Doc Watson, a true American treasure, sing it late in his career — his beautiful voice soaring through a dark theater, the plaintive lyric unforgettable. It’s hard to believe that Justin Hayward was only 19-years-old when he wrote it.”

Accompanying the song is a beautifully captivating music video that showcases archived and historically significant clips. “When we were brainstorming about creating a visual companion for ‘Nights In White Satin,’ we had a romantic idea that stitching together old footage would evoke a nostalgic feeling that matches the vibe of the song.”

About Kindred Spirits Larkin Poe says:

“Music is a bridge that can connect generations across time. In recording Kindred Spirits, our admiration for the artists who originally wrote and performed the songs blossomed into an even deeper reverence. Coming up in a family of music lovers, a lot of the songs we have always seemed to gravitate towards learning have been with us since childhood; we started a YouTube series dedicated to paying tribute to our musical heroes in 2015 that unexpectedly took off and when fans began requesting recorded versions of the songs, we started daydreaming about how an interpretive album might take shape. Bringing these old friends into the studio, stripping them back to the bones and recording them live and raw, felt like a ritual. We’re grateful for the experience of making this album and grateful to the Kindred Spirits who have come before us and written the soundtrack of our lives.”

Larkin Poe recently announced several live performance screenings via their all new POECAST. The band will be sharing an acoustic band show (with stories from the road) on October 4. The performance will air twice, first at 2pm ET and then again at 8PM ET. If fans are unable to watch the show “live”, they will be available to watch after each airing. During the stream, the full band will be in the chat room interacting with fans plus special guests are expected to make appearances in the chat room as well. Larkin Poe aired their first full rock band performance via their Poecast on September 20. Show tickets, VIP passes, limited edition shirts and posters are available now.

Pink Floyd’s ‘Delicate Sound Of Thunder’ live album gets spruced up for deluxe editions, box set

Warner Music U.S. announced the upcoming release of Pink Floyd’s ‘Delicate Sound Of Thunder’ on Blu-ray, DVD, 2-CD, 3-disc vinyl and deluxe 4-disc edition with bonus tracks, on November 20, 2020.

Alongside the classic live album and full concert film (restored and re-edited from the original 35mm film and enhanced with 5.1 surround sound), included in The Later Years box set, all editions feature 24-page photo booklets, with the 4-disc box edition including a 40-page photo booklet, tour poster and postcards. The 3-LP 180-gram vinyl set includes 9 songs not included on the 1988 release of the album, while the 2-CD release includes 8 tracks more than its original release.

In 1987, Pink Floyd re-emerged. The legendary British band, formed in 1967, had suffered the loss of two co-founders: keyboardist / vocalist Richard Wright, who left after sessions for The Wall in 1979, and bass player and lyricist Roger Waters, who had left to go solo in 1985, soon after the 1983 album The Final Cut.

Guitarist/singer David Gilmour and drummer Nick Mason proceeded to create the multi-platinum A Momentary Lapse Of Reason album, a global chart smash, which also saw the return of Richard Wright to the fold.

Originally released in September 1987, A Momentary Lapse Of Reason was quickly embraced by fans worldwide, who flocked to attend the live tour dates, which started within days of the album’s release. The tour played to more than 4.25 million fans over more than two years, and, as a celebration of the enduring talent and global appeal of Pink Floyd, was unsurpassed at the time.

Filmed at Long Island’s Nassau Coliseum in August 1988 and directed by Wayne Isham, the 2020 release of the Grammy Award nominated Delicate Sound Of Thunder is sourced directly from over 100 cans of original 35mm negatives, painstakingly restored and transferred to 4K, and completely re-edited by Benny Trickett from the restored and upgraded footage, under the creative direction of Aubrey Powell/Hipgnosis. Similarly, the sound was completely remixed from the original multitrack tapes by longtime Pink Floyd engineer Andy Jackson with Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, assisted by Damon Iddins.

Pink Floyd’s supporting cast for the live dates included: Jon Carin (Keyboards, Vocals), Tim Renwick (Guitars, Vocals), Guy Pratt (Bass, Vocals), Gary Wallis (Percussion), Scott Page (Saxophones, Guitar), Margret Taylor (Backing Vocals), Rachel Fury (Backing Vocals) and Durga McBroom (Backing Vocals).

The setlist carefully balances the then-new material and Pink Floyd classics, including songs from The Dark Side Of The Moon (Time, On The Run, The Great Gig In The Sky and Us And Them), the anthemic title track of Wish You Were Here, The Wall's Comfortably Numb and a cathartic Run Like Hell. The 2-CD version features all the songs from A Momentary Lapse Of Reason including the powerful Learning To Fly, the lyrical On The Turning Away, and the mesmerising Sorrow. Other formats include a variety of songs.

Hit singer/songwriter Jules Shear set to return with new album 'Slower'

“I used to think no one could catch me,” observes Jules Shear on “Until Now,” a track from his first solo album since 2017’s One More Crooked Dance. “But now I’m slower.”

With no worries about radio airplay, streams, sales or even being cool — though he is, effortlessly — Jules Shear has been creatively liberated to pursue his very idiosyncratic muse on Slower, which may describe his current lifestyle, but certainly not his prolific writing pace. The album will be released on November 13, 2020, with the first single, “Smart,” set for digital release on October 16, 2020 via Funzalo Records.

“What else is there to do?,” muses the man who famously wrote Cyndi Lauper’s “All Through the Night,” the Bangles’ “If She Knew What She Wants,” and Alison Moyet’s “Whispering Your Name,” then made his name performing with the Funky Kings, Jules and the Polar Bears, the Reckless Sleepers and as a solo artist. “At this point, I’m just going to keep doing it in the way I feel like doing it. It felt natural to me, so I just kept going.”

Slower finds Jules trying to enjoy the present moment between past and future, yesterday and tomorrow, living and dying, “Hell and Hello,” whether he’s touting the joys of eating “Sugar All Day” (which begins with one scratchy guitar chord and includes a warm, plaintive harp solo from guest and fellow Woodstock denizen John Sebastian), pondering the onset of autumn in “Feels Like Fall,” or singing the praises of companionship in “It Came Down From Heaven,” “It’s Love,” and “Call It Love.”

“Make today like tomorrow for a little while,” Shear croons over the jazzy piano of the new standard of the same name, “Today Like Tomorrow,” then “I don’t know what time it is now/And I don’t know what time it was” in “Pretty Please,” trying as best as a self-conscious guy like Jules can to be in the moment, which he addresses with the philosophical, tongue-in-cheeky “Smart.”

Much in the vein of his previous effort, One More Crooked Dance, Slower is yet another homegrown effort, again recorded at producer Lee Danziger’s home studio in Woodstock, a
10-minute ride from Shear’s home. The end result works as a whole, a throwback to the Great American Songbook and Tin Pan Alley, late-night Sinatra torch ballads for swinging lovers, as well as Leonard Cohen/Dylan-esque folk dirges, laced with a none-too-self-serious gravitas and a whiff of imminent mortality.

“These songs all started with words, no music, and then I try to figure out what kind of song they sound like,” says Shear about making the new album. “I’ll take it from there and start messing with it, filling in the gaps with melody.”

Slower is a personal album, offering an inadvertent glimpse into the fertile mind of Jules Shear. “You’re supposed to be angry and sad/Is that why people love your songs?” in “Between Hell and Hello,” a tiny glimpse inside the dark side of domesticity.

These days, Shear’s songwriting process is similar to a jigsaw puzzle, juggling lyrics until they click into place, then creating music to “fill in the gaps.” An old-school auteur in an age of multi-writer songs, Jules has tried to collaborate with others, but finds “I don’t think it ever turns out too good.”

A writer of some of the greatest love songs in pop music, Shear continues to explore a hard-won contentment. “I’m not embarrassed to write like that,” insists Jules, “I’m fine with it.” One of the album’s set pieces, “Feels Like Fall,” offers the perspective of someone much closer to the end of life than the beginning. “I’m just trying to be in the present,” he says realizing you can’t eat “Sugar All Day,” but must accept that even love comes with its conflicts. In the end, the process of songwriting proves its own reward.

“I feel like I have to keep writing songs; I don’t know why or what makes me do it, but the fact that I can do it and I like them a lot when I’m done with them, I just feel like I should not ask many questions and just forge ahead.”

Slower is Jules Shear unfettered, transparent and raw, forging ahead as only he can, with lyrics that engage the mind and melodies that touch the heart, which he’s been doing since his very first solo album, 1983’s Watch Dog, produced by Todd Rundgren, the first time Jules remembers being in Woodstock, now his permanent residence. That record included both Jules’ original versions of “All Through the Night” and “Whispering Your Name,” which became hits for Cyndi Lauper and Alison Moyet, respectively.

“I hope people discover these new songs and cover them,” says Jules. “That’s a really nice way to make a living.”

Professor and the Madman feat. members of The Damned, Adolescents, D.I. have a new album in November

Professor and the Madman, a musical group featuring veterans from both the U.S. and UK rock scenes, will release a new album, SĂ©ance, on Nov. 13.

It will be available on yellow vinyl, CD, and digital download via Fullertone Records.

Band members are vocalist/guitarist Alfie Agnew (Adolescents, D.I.), vocalist/guitarist Sean Elliott (D.I., Mind Over Four), bassist Paul Gray (The Damned, Eddie & the Hot Rods, U.F.O.), and drummer Rat Scabies (formerly of The Damned).

Co-produced by Elliott and Agnew, SĂ©ance's dozen tracks are linked by thematic threads in a manner similar to the classic rock “concept albums” of the 1960s and 1970s. Elliott explains, “The overarching story concerns a group of friends who hold a sĂ©ance in order to say one final farewell to friends who have passed. While in the supernatural fog they visit purgatory and hell. Ultimately, the nature of their reality gets a sobering check with a twist ending. Additional characters make appearances. All is not as it seems…"

“The new material is definitely eclectic,” says Agnew. “It’s less punk-influenced than our previous three studio albums. The 1960s and ‘70s musical influences are more pronounced. We’re big fans of The Kinks, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Brian Wilson, Led Zeppelin, and, of course, The Damned. Sean and I also had musical productions like Jesus Christ Superstar, Phantom of the Paradise, Tommy and Hair in mind when writing this album.”

The rhythm section of Gray and Scabies are certainly no strangers to ambitious song cycles, having previously shared songwriting and instrumental credits on The Damned’s The Black Album (1980), and Scabies being an integral contributor to that same group’s gothic rock epic Phantasmagoria (1985). “Alfie and Sean are talented songwriters,” says Scabies. “We’ve recorded four albums via file sharing and I’m always impressed by the high quality of the tunes they bring to me.” Gray concurs: “Those guys make absolutely honest music, the most exciting I’ve heard in eons, and chock-full of melodies. When I first heard them, my thoughts were ‘Damned meets Cheap Trick via The Kinks’—that’s a pretty heady mixture!”

Sessions for SĂ©ance began in spring 2019 at Hollydale Studios in Fullerton, California, with Agnew and Elliott completing recording in March 2020. Scabies’ drums were captured in Somerset UK and Gray’s basslines in Cardiff UK. The album’s bold cover caricature was drawn by Cliff Mott, a New York City-based artist who has designed book and album covers as well as poster art for the city’s long-running “Loser’s Lounge” series of tribute concerts. www.cliffmott.com

Rarities collection from Dave Alvin arrives in November

Grammy Award-winning singer/guitarist Dave Alvin (The Blasters, X) will release From An Old Guitar: Rare and Unreleased Recordings  on Nov. 20 through Yep Roc Records. The 16-song collection features songs recorded over the years for his own records and tribute albums, but “the majority were recorded for no other reason at all than the sheer kicks of going into a recording studio to make some joyous noise with musicians and singers that I love and admire,” offers Alvin.

Produced by Dave Alvin, From An Old Guitar: Rare and Unreleased Recordings offers a mix of acoustic blues and ballads to electric bar room blues to folk and country/rock. The album features songs written by Alvin as well as ones written by Alvin friends like Peter Case, Bill Morrissey and Chris Smither, as well as heroes like Willie Dixon, Bob Dylan, Earl Hooker, Doug Sahm, Lil’ Hardin Armstrong, Marty Robbins and Bo Carter.

There are also contributions from Chris Gaffney, Amy Farris and Bobby Lloyd Hicks as well as from old Blasters pals like Gene Taylor along with various members of The Guilty Men/Women/Ones.

“If I had a few extra bucks in my pocket, I’d book a day in the studio, call some old (or new) friends, comrades and co-conspirators to join me and see what would happen,” notes Alvin, “no pressure, no expectations, just making music for the transcendental thrill of, well, making music.” The accompanists joining Alvin in-studio include Greg Leisz, Cindy Cashdollar, Bob Glaub, Don Heffington, Christy McWilson, Danny Ott, Dale Spalding, and Cindy Wasserman.

“I consider myself extremely lucky to have had such a stellar collection of musicians to make some noise with and to say that I'm proud of the performances on this release would be a gigantic understatement,” adds Alvin. “And, yeah, of course I played beat up, old guitars on all the songs. I sincerely hope you enjoy these songs (and the musicians/singers bringing them to life). These recordings may be rare, unreleased or little heard but I'm very proud of them and they hold a very special, warm place in my heart. Just like my old guitars.”

“The 24 Karat Gold Tour was my all-time favorite tour. I not only got to sing my songs but I was able to tell their stories for the first time. I love having the opportunity to share this concert with my fans. From me to you – 24 Karat Gold,” said Nicks.

A new solo EP on the way from Tim Burgess of The Charlatans

Tim Burgess has announced a new EP, Ascent Of The Ascended, that will be released on Nov. 27 via Bella Union.

The six track release contains two songs - “Yours. To Be” and “The Ascent Of The Ascended," which were recorded soon after latest full-length album I Love The New Sky came out.

Four were completed in New York City last March as a live session for Paste Magazine. Three are from I Love The New Sky and there's a new version of 1990 hit "The Only One I Know" by his longtime UK band The Charlatans.

Of the lead track, “Yours. To Be,” Burgess says: “At the tail end of the glory of the night before - with all the hope and beauty that the following morning brings. Away from the glare of the party - like the calm after the storm has left town. It’s a feeling that’s so pure and uncluttered. It’s around a while, then real life starts to creep back in. It’s all about making the most of moments as they are happening.” Listen to it HERE.

Burgess goes on to say: “There was an energy that came from recording the album with such a brilliant band - I didn’t want it to end, I wanted to record a bit of a magnum opus, which is where Ascent of the Ascended came in. I’d always wanted to work with Charles Hayward from This Heat, so we have him a ring and he said yeah. With “Yours. To Be” being almost like an instant feeling you get in a moment, very rarely in your life - the two songs are so different but they somehow complement each other. So an EP was the perfect idea.”

“We had so many plans for playing live this year - from South by Southwest to Glastonbury and everything in between. But that wasn’t to be. We played four shows in New York before lockdown happened - so our session for Paste Magazine was such a rare event, we’ve included the songs to complete the EP.”

Out now: 'Gemini,' the new album by 'Schitt's Creek' cast member Noah Reid

Folk-rock singer/songwriter and actor Noah Reid's sophomore album Gemini is available digitally now. The studio effort was p
roduced by Matthew Barber, who also oversaw Reid's 2016 debut effort Songs From A Broken Chair.

The textured songs on Gemini detail the struggles and challenges of dealing with the entertainment biz along with some hopeful, exuberant tunes about falling in love.

A Toronto native with various TV, film and stage credits ("Degrassi: The Next Generation," "Kevin From Work," "Pippi Longstocking," "Score: A Hockey Musical"), Reid is probably best known for his Canadian Screen Award-winning role as Patrick Brewer on the Netflix and Pop TV hit sitcom Schitt's Creek - the recipient of a record-breaking nine Emmy awards this past Sunday.

In 2017, Reid's soulful acoustic guitar cover of Tina Turner’s "The Best," featured in a pivotal romantic scene between his and Dan Levy's characters on the series' fourth season, was a surprise hit. It went to #3 on the iTunes Canada chart. That led more people to discover 'Broken Chair.'

Earlier this month, I watched the first five seasons of "Schitt's Creek" and was immediately drawn to Reid's singing on the show.

Among the impressive new album's standouts are the driving, piano-led opener "Honesty" and "American Roads," reminiscent of David Grey and 1970s-era Jackson Browne, in addition to a sonic sweep that evokes Counting Crows. Then there's the dreamy "Heroes/Ghosts" and laid-back "Underwater," with a comfy lounge-styled vibe bolstered by subtle sax work and string arrangement. Recent single "Hold On" evokes early Billy Joel and was inspired by a period when Reid missed his soon-to-be wife while working in L.A. as she was back home in Toronto.

Many of the songs would easily fit on AAA radio in America. So far, they have been featured on several prominent iTunes, Amazon Music, Spotify and Apple Music playlists and charts.

Track listing:

1. Honesty
2. Underwater
3. Hold On
4. Hate This Town
5. Got You
6. American Roads
7. Jacob’s Dream
8. Neverending December
9. Heroes/Ghosts

'Songs of Faith and Devotion' is next in the Depeche Mode singles box set series

Depeche Mode 12" vinyl singles project continues with the release of SONGS OF FAITH AND DEVOTION | THE 12" SINGLES on Oct. 30 from Rhino. The set is available for pre-order.

SONGS OF FAITH AND DEVOTION | THE 12" SINGLES, a collector's edition deluxe boxed set, contains eight 12" vinyl discs showcasing the singles—“I Feel You,” “Walking In My Shoes,” “Condemnation” and “In Your Room” --and key B-sides, mixes and live recordings contemporaneous to Depeche Mode's Songs of Faith and Devotion album.

From their earliest days as a band, Depeche Mode have championed 12" vinyl, which allowed them to use singles as a means of offering remixes, rare B-sides, concert performances and more.

Songs of Faith and Devotion carried on Depeche Mode's tradition of releasing phenomenal 12" singles in correlation with their albums. Songs of Faith and Devotion has signature songs like "I Feel You" (the band's highest-charting single worldwide), "Walking In My Shoes" and "In Your Room."

SONGS OF FAITH AND DEVOTION | THE 12" SINGLES contains original and special edition versions of each single.

Rhino released the first two boxed sets in the Depeche Mode 12" singles series--Speak & Spell | The Singles and A Broken Frame | The Singles--in August 2018 with the second batch--Construction Time Again | The 12" Singles and Some Great Reward | The 12" Singles--arriving in December 2018. Rhino released Depeche Mode's Black Celebration | The 12" Singles and Music For The Masses | The 12" Singles on May 31, 2019. The most recent title in the series, Violator | The 12" Singles was issued in July 2020.

Each boxed set in the series contains the singles from each Depeche Mode album on audiophile-quality 12" vinyl, with audio mastered from the original tapes. The artwork for the exterior of each of the box sets draws on iconography inspired by the original releases, while the vinyl sleeves themselves feature the original single artwork.

The Depeche Mode 12" Singles Series will continue over coming years, with plans to release boxes containing the singles from each of the band's albums in similar deluxe audiophile-grade collector's editions.

Sam Smith news

Capitol Records will release Sam Smith’s new album, Love Goes, on Oct. 30. The album pre-order has launched and the new single, “Diamonds” was unveiled. Smith wrote the track with Shellback (Adele, Maroon 5) and Oscar Holter (The Weeknd, Tove Lo). Shellback and Oscar Görres (MARINA, Allie X) produced. Download/stream “Diamonds” HERE.

In the official video, Smith dances alone with abandon, reveling in a newfound freedom and emerging from a stormy night to greet the morning sun. The clip was directed by Emmy award winning filmmaker Luke Monaghan, who also teamed up with Smith on such videos as “Too Good At Goodbyes” “Writing’s on the Wall” and “I’m Not the Only One.” Their work together has amassed over 2.5 billion streams. Watch the “Diamonds” video HERE.

The album’s 17 songs were written over the course of the past two years. The pandemic gave Smith a fresh perspective on the album and impacted both its title and the recording of tracks such as the recently released “My Oasis,” a cross-continental collaboration with Burna Boy.

Says Smith, “Every time I went into the studio I promised myself I would shoot for the stars and have no limitations…I am sorry it’s taken a while. But these unprecedented times gave me the room and space to fall in love with these songs all over again…After it all I still believe love is the answer. And with love in our hearts and kindness in our words and actions, we sing on.”

Love Goes is available for pre-order HERE. Fans who pre-order the digital album will instantly receive “Diamonds” plus “My Oasis,” Dancing with a Stranger,” the chart-topping collaboration with Normani that has sold more than 13 million units and racked up over 2.5 billion streams worldwide, “To Die For” and “How Do You Sleep?”

The new album also features collaborations with Labrinth (“Love Goes”) and Calvin Harris (“Promises”). Love Goes follows 2017’s The Thrill Of It All, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and also topped the charts in the U.K., Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands and Belgium. The album included the hit single “Too Good At Goodbyes,” which recently became Smith’s second song to receive over a billion streams on Spotify, after “Stay With Me.” Smith, who has won GRAMMY, BRIT, Golden Globe and Oscar awards, recently featured on Tiwa Savage’s new song, “Temptation.”

Brian Eno's film music in the spotlight

On Nov. 13, Brian Eno will release Film Music 1976 – 2020 – his first-ever collection of music from his film and television soundtrack digitally and on 2LP and 1CD on Jan. 22, 2021. Spanning five decades, this release features classic Eno compositions and includes some lesser-known gems and seven previously unreleased tracks.

Eno’s long-standing affair with film goes all the way back to 1970 with his soundtrack to Malcolm Le Grice’s short experimental film Berlin Horse. In 1976 he followed this with Sebastiane and a long-forgotten Greek b-horror film, Land Of The Minotaur AKA The Devil’s Men.

This led to an unstoppable momentum largely initiated by the release of Music For Films. Early classic Eno film moments include “Prophecy Theme” from David Lynch’s Dune, “From The Beginning” from Dario Argento’s Opera, “Force Marker” and “Late Evening In Jersey” from Michael Mann’s Heat, “Under” from Ralph Bakshi’s Cool World and his moving cover of William Bell’s soul classic, “You Don’t Miss Your Water,” in Jonathan Demme’s Married to The Mob.

His 1978 studio album, Music For Films was a loose compilation of material recorded between 1975 ~ 1978. It was intended as a conceptual soundtrack for imaginary films, and only the last track, “Final Sunset” was written for an actual film. It proved to be a fruitful project with nearly every piece on the album going on to be used in future films, including several of Derek Jarman’s, the remake of Jean-Luc Goddard’s Breathless, John Woo’s A Better Tomorrow, Rock ‘n’ Roll High School and Todd Hayes’ Safe.

Eno again explored this approach with U2 as Passengers on their collaboration album, Original Soundtracks 1. Four of the tracks from the album were used in films prior to release: “Beach Sequence” and “Your Blue Room” in Michelangelo Antonioni’s Beyond the Clouds, “Miss Sarajevo” in an eponymous documentary about a beauty pageant held in the midst of besieged ‘93 Sarajevo, and “One Minute Warning” in Mamoru Oshii’s Japanese animation classic, Ghost in the Shell. Another track, “Always Forever Now” later appeared in Heat.

In the mid-seventies, Eno began a rich and rewarding collaboration with British filmmaker Derek Jarman, who initially commissioned Eno to record ”Final Sunset” for the closing scene to his first feature film, Sebastiane. The collaboration continued all the way through until Jarman’s untimely death in 1994. Including the several tracks in Sebastiane, this collaboration resulted in Eno’s music in four of Jarman’s films, including “Still Water” and “Dover Beach” in Jubilee, “Blue” and the entire score of the autobiographical Glitterbug – his final film.

“An Ending (Ascent)” and “Deep Blue Day” are taken from Apollo: Atmosphere & Soundtracks, Eno’s collaboration with his brother Roger and Daniel Lanois. The music was originally written for Al Reinert’s landmark documentary of the Apollo moon landing, For All Mankind, although since then, “”An Ending (Ascent)” has taken on a life of its own and is now remembered just as much from Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic, Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later and Miguel Arteta’s Beatriz at Dinner. It even made an appearance in the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. And then there’s “Deep Blue Day,” which will forever be identified with Ewan McGregor’s legendary toilet dive in Trainspotting.

Aside from Glitterbug and For All Mankind, Eno has also provided complete scores for a number of other films including Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones, and more recently, Henrique Goldman’s atmospheric Brazilian serial killer biopic, O Nome da Morte AKA A Man Called Death, Slavoj Ĺ˝iĹľek’s mind-boggling documentary, The Pervert’s Guide To Cinema, Gary Hustwit’s spotlight on pioneering industrial designer Dieters Rams, Rams, and most recently a documentary film on close long-time friend and associate, Stewart Brand, We Are As Gods, which will have its public premiere in early 2021.

Eno has also scored extensively for television, including all three series of award-winning UK crime drama Top Boy, for which he received a BAFTA Award. Danny Boyle’s Mr. Wroe’s Virgins, which also earned Eno and his brother Roger a BAFTA nomination for “Best Original Television Music.” Other television credits include his scores to BBC Natural World’s Hammerhead, Francis Bacon’s Arena, Neil Gaiman’s futuristic urban series, Neverwhere, and Stewart Brand’s BBC mini-series ‘How Buildings Learn’.

Eno has had hundreds of pieces of his music used in films, documentaries, and television programs, including more than 20 complete scores for some of the best-known directors in the world. Film Music 1976 ~ 2020 is a long-awaited album that finally brings together seventeen of his most recognizable film and television compositions, a perfect introduction to this enormous body of work.
