12" Singles:

"Ceremony (version 1)"

Recorded at Eastern Artists Recordings in East Orange, New Jersey during the US visit the previous September, New Order's first single might, in an alternative universe, have been Joy Division's next. The 12" single, originally released in March 1981 (the 7" having been released in January) including the original version of "Ceremony," will feature remastered audio on heavyweight vinyl.

"Ceremony (version 2)"
The alternative, re-recorded version of "Ceremony" now also featuring Gillian Gilbert in the band was released later in 1981 and will feature the later alternative 'cream' sleeve rather than the original green and copper. This 12" will feature remastered audio on heavyweight vinyl.

"Everything's Gone Green"

Originally released on Factory Benelux in December 1981, this 12" featured "Everything's Gone Green," which had previously been on the reverse of the band's second 7" single "Procession" in September 1981, and "Cries And Whispers" and "Mesh" whose titles were flipped on the cover causing confusion amongst fans and compilers ever since. This 12" will feature remastered audio on heavyweight vinyl.

"Temptation"
Featuring the full versions of both tracks this 12" was first release in May 1982 and were the first self-produced released recordings. With "Temptation" being a cast iron New Order classic, this is an essential part of any New Order collection. This 12" will feature remastered audio on heavyweight vinyl.

NAMM '19 news: Grand Plaza performers include Elle King, Black Violin, more

photo: Lippin Group/NAMM
With just over a month to go until the start of The 2019 NAMM Show, The NAMM Campus is set to come alive with a variety of Bands@NAMM performers, a Guinness World Record™-breaking instrument, and household names who will share their own unique mixes of hip-hop and classical, to blues and rock.

On Thursday, The NAMM Foundation Celebration for Music Education will celebrate the advocacy and dedication of NAMM members with a performance from the duo, Black Violin. Composed of classically trained violist and violinist Wil B and Kev Marcus, the pair combine their classical training and hip-hop influences with their DJ to create a distinctive multi-genre sound that is often described as “classical boom.”

Black Violin has collaborated with the likes of Wu-Tang Clan, Wyclef Jean, and Alicia Keys. The duo composed music for the television series Pitch which debuted on FOX in 2016. The group’s most recent record, Stereotypes, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Classical Crossover Chart and #4 on the Billboard R&B Chart.

Friday is the Yamaha All-Star Concert on the Grand, with the artist lineup TBD. Last year’s concert featured Melissa Etheridge, Sam Moore, Michael McDonald, Butch Walker, Lindsey Stirling, Marc Broussard, and Sheléa. Past invite-only concerts elsewhere at NAMM or at Disney's California Adventure have featured Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Tony Bennett, John Legend, Earth, Wind & Fire, U2 founder and drummer Larry Mullen, Jr.

On Saturday, at the annual Imagine Party, The NAMM Foundation and The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus presented by Other World Computing will welcome singer and songwriter, Elle King. In 2015, King (pictured) released her debut album Love Stuff, featuring the hit single “Ex’s & Oh’s” which reached the top of Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart. She made chart history becoming the second female artist in 18 years to reach #1 at Alternative Radio, and “Ex’s & Oh’s” earned Elle two GRAMMY nominations.

She was also featured on Dierks Bentley’s GRAMMY-nominated No. 1 Country Airplay hit “Different For Girls” (she performed it with Bentley at the CMA Awards and took home an award for “Musical Event of the Year”). Her just-released follow-up album Shake The Spirit features the lead single “Shame,” which became her fourth radio #1 single and led Elle to become the only act in history to have scored number 1 singles on the Adult Pop Songs, Adult Alternative Songs, Alternative Songs, and Country Airplay charts.

On Saturday and Sunday, the Arena Plaza will feature the Earth Harp, the world’s longest playable stringed instrument, that will reach from the balcony of the ACC North building to the Plaza. The harp will be played live by its creator William Close, the LA-based inventor who holds the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest stringed instrument in the world.

Close has been performed at The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, a cathedral in Portugal, at Festivals in Portugal, France, Mexico, Canada and more. Close will be on hand to offer educational facts about the cello-like instrument including the science behind it, how it was constructed and how it’s played. Live performances are set throughout the day for the instrument that includes strings extending 1,000 feet in length.

Each Grand Plaza act will start at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday – Saturday and the Earth Harp will perform throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday.

The Grand Plaza and Earth Harp performances are just some of the musical acts performing at The NAMM Show. The Bands@NAMM schedule of performances feature emerging and established acts every hour on the hour on both the NAMM Yamaha Grand Plaza Stage and The NAMM Arena Plaza Stage Presented by Pioneer Pro Audio. Next up in the Phil Collins catalog reissue series: live albums

Phil Collins continues his successful reissue campaign with remastered versions of two classic live albums. Serious Hits…Live! and A Hot Night in Paris will both be released on February 1 via Atlantic/Rhino.

The two albums follow a rediscovery and re-evaluation of his back catalog with the high profile "Take A Look At Me Now" reissue campaign. He subsequently released The Singles collection and delved into the archives for his collaborations compilation Plays Well With Others. Phil Collins is proving as popular as ever in the live arena too. Having just completed a successful North American tour, his Not Dead Yet Live! show heads to Australia and New Zealand in mid-January.

One of the most successful live albums of all-time, SERIOUS HITS… LIVE! was released in 1990 and has been certified 4x Platinum by the RIAA in recognition of over 4 million copies sold. It includes performances of many of his huge hits including "In The Air Tonight," "You Can’t Hurry Love," "Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)," "Easy Lover" (with Philip Bailey) and "Another Day In Paradise."

In contrast, 1999’s A HOT NIGHT IN PARIS focused on jazzy instrumental performances of select songs from his solo discography as well as his work with Genesis. With Collins on drums, the album also finds The Phil Collins Big Band playing select covers such as Miles Davis’s "Milestones" and an extended jam of The Average White Band’s "Pick Up The Pieces."

Both albums will be released on CD, digital and vinyl formats, with A HOT NIGHT IN PARIS making its vinyl debut.

Christmas album roundup 2018

If you’re looking for some fresh festive music to help set the mood for your party, tree trimming, wrapping presents, baking cookies or other activities, here are some new Christmas release suggestions…

The Mavericks
Hey! Merry Christmas
(Thirty Tigers/Mono Mundo)

In 2007, Raul Malo, front man for The Mavericks, put out a solo album called Marshmallow World & Other Holiday Favorites. It was one of the best seasonal albums of that year. So, it’s no surprise that Malo has come up with another winner alongside the band.

Hey! Merry Christmas! contains eight eclectic and memorable blues, jazz and swing-styled originals, plus a pair of old classics - “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” and “Happy Holiday.” The musicians colored them with organ, mellotron, glockenspiel and Tubular bells. Regular Mavericks touring horn section/backing vocalists The Fantastic Five, saxophonist Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band) and noted singers The McCrary Sisters all joined the quartet in the studio.

Standouts include the fun, upbeat opener “Christmas Time Is (Coming ‘Round Again),” bolstered by Malo’s rich voice, the jaunty and sax-fueled “Santa Does,” romantic Tex-Mex of “It’s Christmas Without You” and “I Have Wanted You (For Christmas).” Then there’s the naughty “Santa Wants to Take You for a Ride,” that’s filled with plenty of double entendres. An extra shout out goes to keyboardist Jerry Dale McFadden, who handled the art direction and ultra-cool illustrations by Rik Catlow – reason enough to get the physical version.

JD McPherson
Socks
(New West)

The acclaimed roots rock musician from Oklahoma crafted 10 original songs on Socks that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on a transistor radio in the 1950s. Opening track “All the Gifts I Need” swings and a chugging “Bad Kid” has some memorable twangy guitar. The humorous jump blues of “Hey Skinny Santa!” describes how Santa needs to gain some weight before Christmas, while the equally amusing slinky title track finds McPherson singing about how socks were “the worst gift I ever got…why’d you waste the paper.” Both are standouts, along with the doo wop vocals, twinkling piano and tasty guitar solo on “Santa’s Got A Mean Machine.” Socks is definitely a keeper.

Eric Clapton
Happy Xmas
(Surfdog)

For the frequently bluesy Happy Xmas album, old Slowhand chose lesser-known titles co-written by the likes of Sonny James, Anthony Hamilton, Booker T. Jones and others to go along with a half dozen classics (“White Xmas,” “Merry Xmas, Baby”) and a heartfelt original ballad he did with longtime collaborator Simon Climie (“For Love on Xmas Day”).

Clapton dedicated an EDM lite take on “Silent Night” to the late AVICII and his family members contributed vocals. The solid blues of “Xmas Tears,” Dixieland-styled “Xmas in My Hometown” and slinky groove of “It’s Xmas” fare best. The legendary singer/guitarist is joined by ace musicians like drummer Jim Keltner, guitarist Doyle Bramhall II and bassist Nathan East, a string section and choir. Clapton did the cover art as well.

Diana Ross
Wonderful Christmas Time
(UME)

This regal 20-track collection includes a handful of selections featuring the London Symphony Orchestra. From the sweeping, jazzy medley of “Sleigh Ride/Jingle Bells,” the sleek, old school styled “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” and a few spiritual numbers to the lush cover of Bacharach & David’s “What the World Needs Now,” John Lennon & Yoko Ono’s “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” and the Stevie Wonder popularized “Overjoyed,” Wonderful Christmas Time is classy all the way. Just what you’d expect from Ms. Ross.

Aaron Watson
An Aaron Watson Family Christmas
(Big Label)

The neo-traditional country singer, best known for the hits “Outta Style” and “Run Wild Horses” off 2017 album Vaquero, enlisted his wife and young children to help sing on the charming An Aaron Watson Family Christmas. Watson has said it has “a Frank Sinatra on the farm kind of feel; we hope it is something families can enjoy during the holidays for years to come.” Among the selections: “Lonestar Lonely Christmas,” a nod to his Texas roots, “Christmas Time is Here” from “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and the pleasant, violin-led “The Christmas Waltz.”

Also available: Kaskade/Christmas (Columbia) - a deluxe digital version of the popular American house music DJ's 2017 album with four new tracks ("Jingle Bells," "Auld Lang Syne," "Little Town" and "Jesu Parvule"); Mitch Ryder/Christmas Take a Ride (Golden Lane) - The Sixties rocker from Detroit tackles "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer," "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" and several classics.

Linda Ronstadt live album from the archives due in February

Linda Ronstadt released more than two dozen studio albums during a stellar career that has spanned more than five decades. Surprisingly, during all that time, the legendary singer never released a live album. That will finally change with an upcoming album that features amazing performances from a concert that Ronstadt recorded in 1980 for her acclaimed HBO television special.

Fans are invited to stream the previously unreleased song, "Just One Look" today by going here. LIVE IN HOLLYWOOD will be available on February 1 from Rhino on CD and LP. The music will also be available through digital and streaming services on the same day.

Recorded on April 24, 1980 at Television Center Studios in Hollywood, the concert captures Ronstadt at the peak of her reign as America's most popular female rock singer. For LIVE IN HOLLYWOOD, Ronstadt selected 12 of her favorite performances from the original concert.

In concert, she was joined by an outstanding band that included guitarists Kenny Edwards and Danny Kortchmar, drummer Russ Kunkel, bassist Bob Glaub, keyboardist Billy Payne (of Little Feat fame), pedal steel guitarist Dan Dugmore, and backing vocalist Wendy Waldman. Rounding out the band was Peter Asher - Ronstadt's producer and the concert's executive producer - who played percussion and sang background.

On stage, Ronstadt held the packed audience spellbound with powerful renditions of her biggest hits - "Blue Bayou," "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" and "It's So Easy" - plus an incredible, previously unreleased six-minute jam of her #1 smash, "You're No Good." The concert also showcased a trio of Top Ten hits from Ronstadt's then-current album - Mad Love - with performances of "I Can't Let Go," "How Do I Make You" and "Hurt So Bad." After its release in February 1980, Mad Lovewould become Ronstadt's seventh consecutive platinum-selling album.

John Boylan - who produced LIVE IN HOLLYWOOD - says the album almost didn't happen because HBO, Ronstadt, and her record label, Warner Bros., could not initially find the master tapes. It was a rink-side conversation with a Warner Bros. audio engineer at their sons' hockey practice that would finally lead him to the missing tapes. In the album's liner notes, he writes: "I have no way of calculating the odds of finding the lost tapes through a chance encounter at a hockey practice, but they must be astronomical - like winning the lottery. And in this case of remarkable serendipity, every Linda Ronstadt fan is a lottery winner."

An interview with Miles Kane

photo: Lauren Dukoff
Rock music and professional wrestling are often intertwined.

That connection is a close one on Coup de Grace, the third solo album by Miles Kane. It was named after Finn Balor’s signature move (known as a “final blow”).

The singer/guitarist’s favorite WWE Raw fighter appears during the intense music video to “Cry on My Guitar” and gives Kane a mighty smackdown.

A stunt coordinator taught Kane how to land and get thrown properly on camera. The shoot was hard work, but still “the best video I’ve ever done” and “a dream come true,” raved the musician, in a phone interview from London, where he’d just finished a boxing session.

“You know, I’m a big fan of [Finn’s]. We became friends. To get him in the video was amazing. Apart from one scene, I did it all. By the end of the day, I was black and blue. But I was like a kid in a candy shop, [thinking], ‘can you slam me again,’ recalled Kane with a laugh.

The Liverpool native first came to international prominence in the late 2000s as a member of The Last Shadow Puppets with Arctic Monkeys’ main man Alex Turner. Both LSP albums went to No. 1 in England and sold more than 100,000 copies there.

Kane’s impressive 2011 solo debut Colour of the Trap achieved gold status in the U.K. Two years later, the follow up Don’t Forget Who You Are also made the top 10 at home. Half of the former release featured Turner co-writes, plus backing vocals by Noel Gallagher and Corrine Bailey Rae. The sophomore effort included lyrical assists from Lightning Seeds’ Ian Broudie, XTC’s Andy Partridge and Paul Weller.

Collaborating with the former Jam leader was a career highlight. “Paul is definitely a big influence on me and forever will be,” affirmed Kane. “We played the songs we wrote together and a T-Rex song at a Brighton gig [in June]. To work together and be friends means the world to me. I have so much respect for him.”

A headlining U.K. run just finished. Now the big question for U.S. fans is whether Kane will finally perform in America. To date, he has only appeared here with the Puppets, including a memorable performance at Coachella ’16, where they encored with an epic cover of The Beatles’ “I Want You (She’s So Heavy).”

“I’ve never done a solo gig over there. It’s something that I really want to do,” Kane said. “I love America, you know? I like playing there. Hopefully, with this record we’ll do some little club dates on our own.”

The Fab Four is central to Dr. Pepper’s Jaded Hearts Club Band. Kane is part of the Beatles cover band, which includes members of Muse, Nine Inch Nails, Jet and The Zutons.

After their live debut last September, the group took part in a Rachael Ray-hosted party at SXSW and Roger Daltrey’s Teenage Cancer Trust show in London (with guest Graham Coxon of Blur) this past spring. Paul McCartney joined the guys in Los Angeles for the launch of his daughter Stella’s new clothing line. Kane even took part in a panel discussion online about the new Beatles White Album box set.

Coup de Grace was produced by John Congleton (St. Vincent, The Decemberists, Future Islands) and recorded in LA. Acclaimed British rock/rap artist Jamie T. co-wrote the bulk of it with Kane.

He immediately “clicked really well” with the producer, who “likes to work in a similar vein as I do - quick and in the moment. It was a real enjoyable experience.”

Collaborating with Jamie T. served as a creative jump start for Kane.

“Every song that we wrote seemed to be a step above anything that I was writing - either on my own or with other people at that time.

“I’ve known Jamie for 10 years. He’s one of my best mates. I felt so comfortable chatting about emotions we all go through so we could portray them in the songs in a way I hadn’t done before. I like to write about love and jealousy.” Kane professed to admiring the way John Lennon could write a melancholic or angry song equally well. “I go down that road naturally.”

Pop chanteuse Lana Del Rey met the pair at a Jamie T. club gig in LA and later ended up helping them out on the chorus to “Loaded.”

photo: Lauren Dukoff
While Kane’s past solo albums touched upon Brit pop, Mod-inspired rock, psychedelia and blues, punk acts like The Damned, Cramps and Ramones partially inspired some new tracks on Coup de Grace.

“When we were doing the Puppets tour, I was covering The Fall [song “Totally Wired,” off LSP’s The Dream Synopsis EP] in the set. Everyone was saying, ‘that style suits you’ and it felt good. I was mad on The Fall when I was 17-21. I was revisiting that and thought I should get a bit wild and aggressive; try a bit more of the punk thing.”

Taking such an approach also provided Kane an opportunity to distance himself from the mostly luxurious pop/rock vein of LSP material.

“I definitely knew I wanted it to be upbeat and in your face.” The LSP rocker “Bad Habits” was a “punky thing I really enjoyed singing. It’s a style I can do very well, you know? I knew I wanted it to slap you in the face and then have a couple soft moments.” The edgier vibe, mixed with “the emotional side of life, is something I’d wanted to get down for a long time.”

Frantic, fast-paced tracks “Too Little, Too Late,” “Silver Screen” and “Something to Rely On” are prime examples. Then there’s the sinister, Kasabian-styled title track, a T-Rex glam rock groove amid “Cry on My Guitar” and Queens of the Stone Age aggressiveness to “Cold Light of Day.”

Yet the standouts ended up being the midtempo ones. “Wrong Side of Life” finds Kane singing “I was sitting on the throne/Like Marc Antony, I’d die for you” with a soulful, anguished delivery.

Since some lyrics revolved around a breakup and “what I was going through in my life at that time,” it’s not too surprising that he’d reference the tragedy of Antony and Cleopatra.

“That’s how I felt. Maybe it’s an over the top comparison. I’m crying out on that one. It’s my favorite song on the album; I love the vocal on it,” Kane admitted.

The title of the luxurious “Shavambacu,” which could’ve easily fit on the recent TV reboot of “Twin Peaks,” was based on a loving family pet name that stemmed from his grandmother’s mispronunciation of a 1962 French cover tune by Dean Martin.

“It’s a beautiful song and nice to end the record on a positive note.”
