A new Donna Summer compilation on the way

On April 20, Island Def Jam/UMe is set to release Summer: The Original Hits, a companion to Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, an exciting new Broadway musical based on the late disco diva and pop/R&B singer's life.

Previews for Summer: The Donna Summer Musical commenced on March 28, at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York City with the official opening on April 23.

Summer’s influential work is given a fresh, respectful update with two rare remixes headed by renowned Grammy-nominated remix producer Ralphi Rosario: “MacArthur Park (Rosabel’s Radio Mix),” a No. 1 Dance hit in 2013, and “Hot Stuff,” a new rework in collaboration with Erick Ibiza, that debuts on this collection. Another rarity on the collection is Summer’s German-language rendition of “White Boys” that she recorded while in the German musical cast of Hair.

Even though Summer passed away in 2012, her cultural impact and sonic legacy carries on and she garnered a well-deserved posthumous induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.

The Posies mark anniversary with reissues, tour and PledgeMusic campaign

Some very exciting news here. Not only will some of my favorite 1990s albums get reissued this year, but there is also a tour with past band members that sees the guys venture beyond Los Angeles here in SoCal for a change. Read all the details below...

Omnivore Recordings will reissue three classic albums by the Posies, who celebrate their 30th anniversary this year. A PledgeMusic pre-order campaign has launched at https://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/the-posies

Dear 23 will arrive June 15; Frosting on the Beater on Aug. 3. Each of these titles comes as a 2-CD set featuring the original album remastered from original master tapes, plus almost all previously unissued bonus tracks, and on vinyl as a 2-LP set of the original album — mastered at 45 rpm.

Amazing Disgrace will be released Oct. 28 as a 2-CD set, also with the original album remastered from original master tapes, plus almost all previously unissued bonus tracks, and as a 2-LP package — unlike the others, mastered at 33 1/3 as it was simply too long for 45 rpm.

This is a milestone year for the Posies, fronted by Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer. The band began its career exactly 30 years prior by releasing a home-recorded cassette called Failure, which to their complete surprise became an instant favorite around the Northwest, earning them critical accolades, radio airplay, and major label interest all in a very short time. They were lucky to find themselves living just a few doors down the road in Seattle from Arthur “Rick” Roberts and Mike Musburger, who joined the band on bass and drums, respectively.

Signed to Geffen Records, the Posies recorded their second album, Dear 23, and toured the U.S., including as support for both Redd Kross and the Replacements. Arthur left the Posies in 1991, Dave Fox joined on bass, and they made the album that put them into the international spotlight: 1993’s Frosting on the Beater.

After blowing away audiences in Europe while supporting Teenage Fanclub, Pulp, and Superchunk, among others, the Posies cemented a following in Europe that remains loyal to this day. The band changed the rhythm section yet again: Enter Brian Young (Fountains of Wayne, Jesus & Mary Chain) on drums and the late Joe “Bass” Skyward (Sky Cries Mary, Sunny Day Real Estate) on bass. With this lineup, they recorded Amazing Disgrace and were packing venues on four continents.

That was the end of the Posies’ tenure with Geffen; the band, overworked and struggling with various issues, released the Success album in 1998 and went dormant for a couple of years. But these three albums on Geffen remain beloved by fans and are the band’s most popular, most often cited, most requested works.

With major changes in the way music is consumed having largely arrived after these albums were originally released, the albums have not been regularly available: CDs out of print, inconsistent presences on streaming, LPs either long out of print (Frosting LPs on Discogs go for at least $150 these days) or not issued at all, depending on the territory. The CDs themselves, especially Dear 23,which came out in the early days of the format, were not exactly true to the analog masters from which the albums were made.

All that’s about to change thanks to the band’s “favorite label,” Omnivore Recordings, which has, among many releases new and old, previously reissued Failure, as well as releases from Big Star and Game Theory, among others.

The band needs to raise a significant advance fee to license these albums from Universal Music Group, and thus are offering many personal items, experiences, and exclusive merchandise via a fundraiser on PledgeMusic, from clothes they’ve worn onstage or in videos to spending quality time with Jon and/or Ken in their adopted city of Paris, or a coffee date in Seattle.

Also offered are private shows, music lessons, plus exclusive Jon- and Ken-style guitars. Finally, the band offers VIP experiences and souvenirs from the upcoming 30th Anniversary Tour around the world.

Quoting from the band’s PledgeMusic page: “We are basically putting a museum’s worth of items on this campaign … If you’ve ever wanted an authentic artifact of our music, our career, our lives — now is the time! Thank you in advance for your support and we’re very excited to make this music available again to our fans new and old alike.”

To take this celebration around the globe, the Posies, who have had a few lineup changes over the years (always based around the founding duo of Auer and Stringfellow) will be on tour as the 1992-1994 lineup that made Frosting on the Beater — Jon and Ken will be complemented by drummer Mike Musburger and bassist Dave Fox.

It’s been almost a quarter century since this quartet has been on the road, and recent warm-up shows have been as explosive as those played by the twentysomethings of yore. Catch the band on tour this spring in North America, and this fall in Europe — their time is now, again.

On-sale date for North American Posies shows is Friday, March 30th.

Stagecoach '18 news: Jake Owen

Jake Owen, multiple No. 1 artist and past ACM Award winner, has another successful single with "I Was Jack (You Were Diane)," which reunites Owen with producer Joey Moi and marks his first release for Big Loud Records.

"It's been revitalizing. Making music with Joey is all about recording songs that reflect who I am," Jake says of his creative rebirth. "I've seen the negative side of life and the positive side – and I really like the positive side. I want my songs to put a smile on your face."

With "I Was Jack (You Were Diane)," Jake evokes the most golden of memories: a warm-weather romance set to one of rock & roll's essential songs, John Mellencamp's "Jack & Diane." Based around the 1982 hit's iconic melody, Jake both pays homage to and boldly reinvents the classic-rock staple.

"I never release a song without the intention of stepping up to the plate and knocking it out of the park," says Owen. "When I first heard ‘I Was Jack (You Were Diane),’ I thought, ‘How can I do this and re-create what is already a classic song?' But the more I listened to it, the more I saw my own life growing up. The original 'Jack & Diane' was about 'two American kids growing up in the heartland' and that image is exactly what so many country songs are based on. Plus, the most important thing to me and my team is that we sent the song to Mellencamp and he digs the track. Getting his stamp of approval sealed the deal for me that this song should be our debut single."

Along with "I Was Jack (You Were Diane)," Jake's tune entitled "Something to Ride To" has been released to all digital music partners. LISTEN HERE.
“I Was Jack (You Were Diane)” was an iHeart World Premiere, and Sirius XM’s “The Highway” immediately added it. Jake was on the cover of Spotify’s Hot Country playlist, the song topped Amazon Music’s Fresh Country playlist, was added to Apple Music’s A-List Country and Pandora’s New Country Now playlists.

In addition, Owen’s 2018 “Life’s Whatcha Make It Tour” kicks off on May 15 in Chattanooga, TN, at AT&T Field, with special guest Chris Janson and rising star Jordan Davis. The majority of shows will take place at baseball stadiums across the country. Check it out HERE. Tickets on sale NOW.

Owen returns to Stagecoach Festival in Indio, Calif. on Apr. 27.

A new studio album on the way from Roger Daltrey

Polydor/Republic Records will release The Who front man Roger Daltrey's new studio album As Long As I Have You on June 1. It was produced by Dave Eringa (Manic Street Preachers) and features Pete Townshend’s guitar on 7 tracks as well as a guest performance from Mick Talbot on keyboards (Style Council).

The album is a mixture of self-penned tracks such as Certified Rose and Always Heading Home, along with songs that have inspired Daltrey over the years including Nick Cave’s Into My Arms, You Haven’t Done Nothing by Stevie Wonder, Stephen Stills’ How Far and the title track originally recorded by Garnet Mimms in 1964; the year that Daltrey, Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon changed their name from The High Numbers and became The Who.

“This is a return to the very beginning, to the time before Pete [Townshend] started writing our songs, to a time when we were a teenage band playing soul music to small crowds in church halls. That's what we were, a soul band. And now, I can sing soul with all the experience you need to sing it. Life puts the soul in. I’ve always sung from the heart but when you’re 19, you haven’t had the life experience with all its emotional trials and traumas that you have by the time you get to my age. You carry all the emotional bruises of life and when you sing these songs, those emotions are in your voice. You feel the pain of a lost love. You feel it and you sing it and that's soul. For a long time, I've wanted to return to the simplicity of these songs, to show people my voice, a voice they won't have heard before. It felt like the right time. It's where I am, looking back to that time, looking across all those years but also being here, now, in the soulful moment.”
-Roger Daltrey

He will be headlining the Royal Albert Hall on March 22 in aid of The Teenage Cancer Trust.

Track list:

As Long As I Have You
How Far
Where Is A Man To Go?
Get On Out Of The Rain
I’ve Got Your Love
Into My Arms
You Haven’t Done Nothing
Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind
Certified Rose
The Love You Save
Always Heading Home

Album review: The Oak Ridge Boys' '17th Avenue Revival'

The Oak Ridge Boys
17th Avenue Revival
(Lightning Rod)

I've been a fan of The Oak Ridge Boys ever since the Tennessee country vocal group crossed over to the pop charts with the No. 5 smash "Elvira" in 1981. On the country tally, it enjoyed a nearly 15-year run of top 40 hits. But the quartet's roots have always been in gospel music, which they've concentrated on for long periods in the intervening decades.

For 17th Avenue Revival, Duane Allen, Joe Bonsall, William Lee Golden and Richard Sterban re-teamed with producer du jour Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Zac Brown Band), who also helmed The Oaks' 2009's secular release, The Boys Are Back.

This time, Cobb sought to get a raw, old time revival vibe in the style that might have inspired Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis back in the day. On some songs, the guys recorded around a single microphone. There was very little tinkering in the studio and minimal instrumentation.

Clocking in at just under a half hour, the album features nine songs. Several were penned by high profile Nashville songwriters like Brandy Clark, Shane McAnally, Ashley Monroe, Vince Gill, Jamey Johnson and Buddy Cannon.

Standouts include opener "Brand New Star," a joyous, hand-clapping ode to a recently departed love one, an inspirational "There Will Be Light" and the positivity of "Let it Shine on Me," where those old trademark harmonies are instantly familiar. During the humorous, lightly rollicking piano-led "Pray To Jesus" (courtesy of Clark/McAnally), the Oaks sing about the title activity as well as playing the Lotto "because there ain't but two ways we can change tomorrow." There are also a pair of public domain/traditional tunes: "Walk in Jerusalem" and "Where He Leads Me, I Will Follow."

All told, 17th Avenue Revival should satisfy longtime followers.
