Out now: Leftfield reissue electronica classic 'Leftism'

photo: Rick Guest
Leftfield - the electronic music duo originally comprised of Neil Barnes and Paul Daley - have released Leftism 22, a reissue of their seminal debut album Leftism via Sony CG.

Formed in 1989, they emerged publicly in 1990 with "Not Forgotten," a song that established a template for a new strain of British house music, leaning away from American styles dominating UK clubs.

Released in January 1995, their debut album Leftism remains one of the defining statements of dance music, a gloriously inter-woven bombardment of musical styles and immaculate grooves, nominated for a Mercury Prize and later voted in the top ten greatest albums of all time by readers of Q Magazine. The album spawned numerous hit singles in "Open Up" - their now legendary collaboration with John Lydon, "Original" featuring Curve’s Toni Halliday, "Release the Pressure" featuring Earl Sixteen, and "Afro-Left" with vocals by Neil Cole a.k.a. Djum Djum.

Leftism 22 arrives 22 years on from the release of the acclaimed original, in a remastered version overseen by Leftfield’s Neil Barnes (who now runs the band solo) and Paul Daley. It will be available in a limited edition 3xLP vinyl, mirroring the original release and will include download codes for the remastered album and new mixes will be included. Plus digital and 2xCD editions that will feature the original album remastered, as well as all 11 original tracks remixed by a host of artists, including Skream , Adrian Sherwood, BodyJack and Voiski, making 22 tracks in total.

“I suppose Leftism was completely different to anything else at the time,” says Paul Daley, looking back. “We tried to push sonic boundaries and used every inch of the speakers available, and then tried to push it a bit more. It was like pop music sticking two fingers up to pop music at the time and people seemed to take notice.”

“We came together in a quest to make the best record we could,” says Neil Barnes. “I remember all of the epic days in the studio, and I remember moments of satisfaction when we knew we'd nailed it. Tracks developed organically as we continually changed elements to make them work. It was an exhilarating experience, a special time.”

“There has been so much music and new genres since we made Leftfism,” continues Daley. “The baton has been passed on four or five generations but i like to think our record gave music and pop culture a little nudge at the time. It was part of a movement and musical revolution that came from a DIY mentality born from the technology available. The album is like part of me that represents my youth and energy of a more innocent and quite different time both socially and musically. When I listen to it now i think: yeah, nice one, that was definitely worth all the effort and late nights.”

“Paul and I really worked well together,” says Barnes. “We each respected the other’s opinion. It was all about the music. And now, I've come to enjoy it again. I appreciate that it means a lot to so many people. I'm really honored and often deeply moved by all the amazing things that people say about the record. Having Matt Colton re-master the album was a real pleasure, and I realized that Paul and I had created something really special.”

Throughout the 90s Leftfield were untouchable live and on record, starting a snowball rolling for British dance music alongside outfits like Orbital, Underworld and the Dust / Chemical Brothers in breaking electronic music from the underground, onto the stage and into the charts.

They have always been regarded as one of electronic music’s defining live acts. The now-infamous Liveism tour that followed Leftism’s release set a new precedent in sonic presentation as the behemoth sound system, which aimed to replicate the cataclysmic bass effect of reggae sound systems, incurred more complaints than Motörhead, and a ban from Brixton Academy when plaster started flaking from the ceiling. The tour elevated dance music from anonymous club PA to major event, with guest vocalists joining the party.

Alison Moyet returns with 'Other'; North American tour

Leading up to the release of her new album Other on June 16 via Cooking Vinyl, Alison Moyet has unveiled a video for the single "Reassuring Pinches," directed by Steve Gullick, which you can watch here.

Other is a result of Alison’s partnership with producer/songwriting collaborator Guy Sigsworth, who (as well as having worked with Björk, Goldie and Madonna) also co-created her last album the minutes, which debuted at # 5 in the national UK charts and won international critical acclaim.

“For me, making a record at this age, lyrically, is a different proposition. Observation in most cases replaces emotion. The invisibility of middle/aged woman rather thrills me and instead I watch”, explains Moyet, in a statement.

“Subject matter covers what you might expect from a pop album. Dyslexia, locked-out syndrome, diversity, Persephone, doggedness and the Internet. Always asked what a song is about, I attempted to cooperate, but in truth though the lyrics incorporated my best attempt to describe what I see and of the meaning that is mine. I want, who chooses to, to find their own landscape or indeed none. Some of us have always felt 'Other'. I no longer wish it were otherwise.”

The title track "Other", accompanied by a hypnotic video directed by Steve Gullick, is available as an instant track download when pre-ordering the album. Notable backing vocals come from Alison’s daughter on "The English U", which was preceded by her guest appearance on stage at Alison’s Royal Albert Hall show, and an appearance in the video for "When I Was Your Girl" (from the minutes).

In addition to Alison studying sculpture at college whilst also creating this new release, other happenings of note since the minutes include receiving an Icon Award at Nordoff Robbins Silver Clef Awards, a hot ticket performance with a 32-piece orchestra at Burberry’s London Fashion Week womenswear show, and her involvement in the RSC’s celebration of Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary where Alison composed and performed a new arrangement of "Sigh No More Ladies "(from Much Ado About Nothing) in their BBC 2 live special.

Steve Earle news

Musician, songwriter, actor and author Steve Earle and his country rock band The Dukes will release So You Wannabe an Outlaw on June 16 on Warner Bros. Records. The album is available for pre-order via all digital retailers. Those who pre-order will receive an instant download of the album track "Lookin' For A Woman."

So You Wannabe an Outlaw, Earle's first album for Warner Bros. Records since 1997's El Corazón, explores his country songwriting roots and features collaborations with Willie Nelson, Johnny Bush, and Miranda Lambert.

"There's nothing 'retro' about this record," Earle says. "I'm just acknowledging where I'm coming from." So You Wannabe an Outlaw is the first recording he has made in Austin, TX. Earle has lived in New York City for the past decade. "Look, I'm always gonna be a Texan, no matter what I do," he says. "And I'm always going to be somebody who learned their craft in Nashville. It's who I am."

So You Wannabe an Outlaw is an homage to outlaw music and is dedicated to the late Waylon Jennings. "I was out to unapologetically 'channel' Waylon as best as I could." Earle says. "This record was all about me playing' on the back pick-up of a '66 Fender Telecaster on an entire record for the first time in my life. The vocal part of it is a little different. I certainly don't sound like Waylon Jennings. I moved to Nashville in November of 1974, and right after that Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger came out. I was around when Waylon was recording Dreaming My Dreams. Guitar Town (Earle's 1986 chart-topping, Grammy Award-winning debut album) wound up being kind of my version of those types of songs," Earle recalls.

Earle is backed on So You Wannabe an Outlaw by his long-time band The Dukes - guitarist Chris Masterson, fiddle player Eleanor Whitmore, bassist Kelly Looney, and new members drummer Brad Pemberton and pedal steel player Ricky Ray Jackson. The album was produced by Richard Bennett and recorded at Arlyn Studios in Austin.

A true Renaissance man, Earle has also become a novelist, a film, TV, and stage actor, playwright, author, record producer, and radio host over the course of his 30+ year career. He is currently appearing in the off-Broadway play Samara, for which Earle also wrote the score, that The New York Times called "exquisitely subliminal." He is also in the process of writing his memoirs for future publication. Tune in to Steve Earle's weekly radio show Hardcore Troubadour on SiriusXM's Outlaw Country Channel.

This summer, Earle will lead his fourth annual songwriting intensive, Camp Copperhead, in upstate New York from June 26-30, 2017. The all-inclusive, four-day music vacation and fully immersive learning experience will take place at the Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, NY, about half an hour west of Woodstock. Primary instructor Earle will be joined this year by special guest instructors Jackie Greene and Dar Williams. Details can be found at http://camp-copperhead.com/.
