Andrew Bird + orchestra headed to several American cities

photo: Tanner Morris
Andrew Bird is set for a run of orchestral tour dates in select U.S. cities this fall, performing alongside the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Kansas City Symphony and the National Symphony Orchestra.

The final shows of the tour in Washington, DC mark Bird’s Kennedy Center debut, where alongside the National Symphony Orchestra he will perform with musician, composer and orchestrator Gabriel Kahane, who has conceived innovative orchestrations of Bird’s songs.

Additionally, Bird will co-headline three dates in August with Punch Brothers. See below for full tour dates and for more info visit www.andrewbird.net.

Prior to the fall orchestral performances, this May Bird will perform select songs from his score for the Patagonia-produced film Blue Heart following premiere screening events in New York and Chicago.

The film documents the battle for the largest undammed river in Europe (Albania’s Vjosa), the effort to save the endangered Balkan lynx in Macedonia, and the women of Kruščica, Bosnia and Herzegovina who are spearheading a months-long, 24/7 protest to protect their community’s only source of fresh water. All NYC ticket sales will benefit Riverkeeper, while Chicago ticket sales will benefit Prairie Rivers Network; both are organizations that work to protect natural flowing rivers locally.

Bird also recently scored acclaimed director Lynn Shelton’s new film Outside In, which made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. The score received a rave review from Variety, who proclaim, “Having pop iconoclast Andrew Bird as composer was an inspired choice, as his largely acoustic score adds some playful edges to the overall texture,” whileThe Hollywood Reporter praised the “excellent score by Andrew Bird.” The film is out now on iTunes and On Demand everywhere.

Chicago-born, LA-based film score composer, multi-instrumentalist and lyricist, Andrew Bird picked up his first violin at the age of four and spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely by ear. As a teen Bird became interested in a variety of styles including early jazz, country blues and gypsy music, synthesizing them into his unique brand of pop.

Since beginning his recording career in 1997, he has released 14 albums, his most recent being, Echolocations: River, which was recorded ankle deep in the Los Angeles River under The Hyperion Bridge. The instrumental release is the second in a series of short films and recordings documenting site-specific compositions. Performed by Bird and filmed by Tyler Manson in remote and acoustically unique environments, the first installment, Echolocations: Canyon, was released in 2015.

Joseph Arthur and Peter Buck team up for duo album, tour

photo: Dean Karr
Now this sounds like an intriguing collaboration. Can't wait to hear it. Check out the press release below...

Joseph Arthur and Peter Buck of R.E.M. fame will release their debut album, Arthur Buck, on June 15 via New West Records. The 11-song set was produced by Joseph Arthur and mixed by Tchad Blake (U2, Pearl Jam, The Black Keys) with all of its songs co-written by the duo.

The collaboration was established after the pair met up in Mexico near the end of 2017. They wrote eight songs in three days and on the fourth day, performed them for a handful of Baja locals near Buck’s home. Arthur says, “My first thought was, ‘Hey, I’ll get Peter to play acoustic guitar on some of the stuff I’m working on!’ So I started showing him songs. But he was like, ‘That’s cool. Now check this out.’ And he started playing chords and whatnot. So I put my guitar down and began singing over his changes, and it was magical. It was easy. And these great songs just started popping out.”

Since their initial meeting, the pair have been steadily working on their debut with basic tracks being recorded at Type Foundry Studio in Portland, OR with Arthur producing at his studio in Brooklyn, NY.

“It was all new songs, and it was spontaneous,” Buck says. “And the great thing about working that way was that it didn’t have to be anything in particular. It was liberated from any expectation. It was free.”

NPR Music premiered “I Am The Moment”. Hear it HERE. Arthur Buck will be available as an Indie Retail Translucent Blue & Red Split Colored Vinyl Edition, a limited edition Autographed Barnes & Noble Vinyl Variant, Standard Black Vinyl, Compact Disc, and across digital platforms. The album is currently available for pre-order via NEW WEST RECORDS.

The two musicians have a history that stretches back decades; among other pairings, Arthur opened many shows for R.E.M. in the early 2000s, while Buck has backed Arthur on numerous occasions.

Both Arthur and Buck have said that these songs differ from their other recording projects and while speaking with Rolling Stone last month, Buck said “It was really spontaneous and kind of magical in its own way, as [being in Mexico] we were kind of disconnected from everything.”

Arthur added, “All of a sudden it was like I had this musical partner and friend, and that relieved the music of the burden of the self, if that makes sense.” Of his new bandmate, Buck stated, “Joe is going through that searching period we all go through in life. And those experiences he’s having make this a very forward-looking record, lyrically. The music has a questing kind of feel. We were making it up as we went along.”

Tour dates announced shortly.

Elvis Presley, Beatles, Supremes, Temptations on Ed Sullivan Show to get upgraded home video release

From 1948 to 1971, TV’s longest-running prime time variety program, CBS’ “The Ed Sullivan Show,” beamed the world’s biggest stars into the homes of nearly every American household live every Sunday evening.

For musicians of all stripes, performing on the show was the pinnacle of television opportunities, with singular star-making potential. Among the artists vaulted to new heights of stardom via history-making appearances were The Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Temptations, and The Supremes, all of whom returned to “The Ed Sullivan Show” several times after electrifying debut performances on the program.

On May 25, SOFA Entertainment/UMe will release three DVD collections honoring Elvis Presley’s legacy on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and beyond its stage: The 3 Complete Ed Sullivan Shows Starring Elvis Presley (2DVD), which includes all three entire episodes featuring Elvis; JUST ELVIS: All His Ed Sullivan Show Performances (1DVD), featuring just his iconic performances, including his infamous 1957 performance filmed from the waist up; and Elvis: The Great Performances (2DVD), which collects three previously released documentaries featuring appearances on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and dozens of other great Elvis TV and film performances into one DVD collection: Center Stage, The Man And The Music, and From The Waist Up.

In addition, three popular, previously released DVD collections: The Complete Ed Sullivan Shows Starring The Beatles, The Best Of The Supremes On The Ed Sullivan Show, and The Best Of The Temptations On The Ed Sullivan Show have been digitally upgraded from standard definition to high definition video for release by SOFA Entertainment/UMe on May 25.

All six DVD titles are available now for preorder:

Just Elvis: All His Ed Sullivan Performances (1DVD): https://UMe.lnk.to/ElvisonEdSullivan

The Three Complete Ed Sullivan Shows Starring Elvis Presley presents the three entire “Ed Sullivan Show” episodes with Elvis’s historic performances, from September and October 1956 and January 1957. All 13 of Elvis’ electrifying performances for the program (including medleys) are featured in the 2DVD collection, as well as each show’s additional guests, including comedians Carol Burnett and Señor Wences, actor Charles Laughton, and boxer Sugar Ray Robinson. Special bonus material includes a home movie of a very early Elvis Presley performance in Houston, Texas; Elvis and Ed Sullivan remembered; and home movies of Elvis, his wife Priscilla, and their daughter Lisa Marie.

JUST ELVIS: All His Ed Sullivan Show Performances features all 15 songs from Elvis Presley’s three appearances on the show between September 1956 and January 1957, without the show’s other guests. So explosive and radical were these performances, Elvis’ final “Ed Sullivan Show” appearance had to be filmed from the waist up due to the fears and timidity of CBS’s censors.

Elvis: The Great Performances collects three feature documentary films on two DVDs, exploring the rise, music, personality and presence of the man crowned The King of Rock ’n’ Roll. Center Stage captures Elvis’ undeniable physical appeal and unrivaled artistic brilliance as it explores the time between his first TV appearance in 1956 to one of his very last concerts.

The Man and The Music offers glimpses into Elvis’ private life and the difficult realities of his unprecedented fame. Featured are rare home movies of Elvis’ friends and family as well as his first recording, a song called “My Happiness” that he recorded at Sun Studios as a gift for his mother. From the Waist Up, narrated by U2’s Bono, follows Elvis’ remarkable trajectory to stardom, from unknown singer to icon in just 12 months. Featured are many of Elvis’ TV performances culminating with his legendary appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Other featured performances include “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” “All Shook Up,” and “Return To Sender.” The collection’s bonus features include interviews with Elvis Presley band members Scotty Moore & D.J. Fontana, Sun Records founder Sam Phillips, and Elvis contemporaries Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins.

Newly upgraded from standard definition (720x480, 4x3) to high definition video (1920x1080, 16x9) and digitally enhanced for image clarity and stabilization, three popular “Ed Sullivan Show” collections for The Beatles, The Supremes and The Temptations will also be released:

The 4 Complete Ed Sullivan Shows Starring The Beatles collects the four entire episodes of “The Ed Sullivan Show” with history-making performances by The Beatles on two DVDs. On February 9, 1964, The Beatles stepped onto Ed Sullivan’s stage to make their U.S. TV debut. 73 million Americans tuned in and “Beatlemania” exploded. In these unforgettable live shows from 1964 and 1965, The Beatles performed 20 songs, including the Number One hits “She Loves You,” “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” “Ticket To Ride,” “Yesterday,” “Help!,” “I Saw Her Standing There,” and “All My Loving.”

The Best Of The Supremes On The Ed Sullivan Show presents 22 of the Motown legends’ greatest performances on the program on one DVD. Included is The Supremes’ first appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in December 1964, which featured a performance of their Number One hit “Come See About Me.” Other timeless performances are showcased, including “You Can’t Hurry Love,” “Love Child” and “The Happening.” This collection also includes “Up The Ladder To The Roof” from the only appearance on the show by the “New Supremes” after Diana Ross went on to a solo career.

The Best Of The Temptations On The Ed Sullivan Show spotlights The Temptations’ best performances on the program on one DVD. Included is the group’s debut appearance from May 1967, in which they performed a medley of hits, including “My Girl” and “(I Know) I’m Losing You.” The collections’ other featured performances include the group’s Number One hit “I Can’t Get Next To You,” a playful version of “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy,” the Top Ten hit “Psychedelic Shack,” and the 1969 hit single “Runaway Child, Running Wild” with Dennis Edwards replacing David Ruffin. The Temptations’ final 1971 performance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” is also included, broadcast just a few months before the show went off the air, for which they performed “Get Ready” and their Number One hit “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me).”

Stephen Bishop's 'Red Cab To Manhattan' set for reissue

On May 11, Blixa Sounds, a new Los Angeles based label, will release Red Cab To Manhattan, the third album from Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Stephen Bishop.

Over the last five years Bishop’s music has helped define the Yacht Rock sound – a phenomenon that has brought renewed popularity to several soft rock artists of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s including Christopher Cross, Robbie Dupree and Ambrosia to name just a few. Bishop’s album has been digitally re-mastered from the original tapes and contains previously unreleased bonus tracks.

Bishop burst on the scene in 1976 with the release of his debut album Careless, which featured smash hits “On and On” and “Save It For A Rainy Day.” Both the Careless album and his follow up effort, Bish, went gold. With the release of his third album, Red Cab To Manhattan in 1980, Bish took his craft to a whole new level creatively.

When asked about the reissue, Bish replied, “I’m especially excited because Red Cab is my favorite album. It has a lot of variety on it. It has great players including Eric Clapton, Phil Collins and Art Garfunkel. Plus, there are a lot of cool production things including great computerized keyboard work from Mike Mainieri who co-produced the album with Tommy Mottola.”

Bishop grew up in San Diego and discovered his love of music at the age of 12 when he learned to play the clarinet. When his brother gave him a guitar for his 13th birthday, Bishop began writing music – prolifically. At the age of 17 he had already written 200 songs and decided to take his talent to Hollywood. “I ended up walking around Hollywood trying to get a deal and got a songwriting contract with a publisher for $50 a week,” says Bishop. “I was still writing weird songs back then like “There’s A Hair In Your Enchilada” and “She Took All My Kumquats” and I would go to my publisher and say, ‘Hey, I’ve got a great song for Cher – “She Took All My Kumquats.”

He got his first big break when friend Leah Kunkel (Cass Elliot’s sister) gave his tape to Art Garfunkel. “Art ended up doing two of my songs on his Breakaway album and we also started being friends – we’ve been friends for 40 years now.”

In addition to the 18 albums Bishop’s released over the years, he has also performed and/or written numerous songs that have been featured in films including Animal House, The China Syndrome and Tootsie. His music has been recorded by a who’s who of A-list artists including Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler.

The newly released album will feature the original iconic album cover artwork and will be presented in high quality gatefold CD packaging.

5 Seconds of Summer tour, album news

photo: Alexandra Gavillet
Capitol Records will release Youngblood, the third studio album from 5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS), on June 22. The title track will be released this Thursday, April 12, at 7 AM PT/10 AM ET.

Of Youngblood, vocalist/guitarist Luke Hemmings explains, “Growing up is what we had to do on Youngblood. Seven years as a band may seem like a long time, but we were teenagers when we started. We had to look at each other and say, ‘Are we going to stop now, or do this forever? Because if we continue, then we have to go farther than we ever have before.’”

With the spring 5SOS3 tour completely sold out, the band is making good on its promise to fans for a more extensive outing, including larger venues and amphitheaters across the run. The Meet You There Tour, will launch in August in Toronto. The 25-city North American headline trek will conclude in October in Los Angeles. Each ticket purchased for the Meet You There Tour also includes a copy of the forthcoming album. See below for itinerary.

Tickets will go on sale to the general public beginning Friday, April 13 at 10 AM local time at LiveNation.com.

5SOS will perform “Want You Back,” the first single from Youngblood, on NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” this Wednesday, April 11 – the eve of the band’s sold-out show at New York City’s Irving Plaza.

The track debuted at No. 1 on iTunes in over 18 countries and has already amassed more than 60 million streams worldwide.

An acoustic version of “Want You Back” is out now along with “Want You Back” (Tritonal Remix). The official video, which was directed by James Larese (Eminem, Fall Out Boy, Imagine Dragons), can be seen HERE.

5SOS is the only band (not vocal group) in history to see its first two full-length studio albums enter the Billboard 200 at No. 1. 5SOS’s self-titled debut album has sold more than three million units worldwide, with 1.5 million albums and more than 4.5 million single tracks sold in the U.S. alone.

2015’s Sounds Good Feels Good charted at No. 1 in 12 countries, including the U.S., the U.K. and Australia. “She’s Kinda Hot,” the album’s first single, topped the iTunes charts in 44 countries. 5SOS – comprising Luke Hemmings (vocals/guitar), Michael Clifford (vocals/guitar), Calum Hood (vocals/bass) and Ashton Irwin (vocals/drums) – has won an American Music Award, a People’s Choice Award, an iHeartRadio Music Award, five MTV European Music Awards, two ARIA Awards and an MTV Video Music Award.

Home video release on Chrissie Hynde & the Pretenders coming soon

This should be very interesting. I caught the band on its recent U.S. arena tour with Stevie Nicks, which was great...

Previously broadcast as part of the BBC TV Arena series, Alone With Chrissie Hynde follows the Pretenders’ lead singer as she shares an insight into her life.

On a journey taking place in Paris, London, New York, Nashville and her hometown of Akron, Ohio, Chrissie takes the lead, avoiding the talking heads typically associated with documentaries to speak frankly about her passion for music, painting and the issues that matter to her most. This film will be released on DVD and Digital formats via Eagle Rock Entertainment on May 25.

“People that are careful about looking like they don’t care or have another level of caring,” says Hynde, as she stocks up on some men’s tailoring in a Parisian store and relaxes in her Paris apartment, sporting a tourist style t-shirt (“I never pack what I need”). While in her London home, overflowing with her paintings, she picks through some of the records that influenced her most. At George Harrison’s Bhaktivedanta Manor Hare Krishna Temple, she milks a cow, before rocking up on stage for a guest spot at a tiny West London pub.

Of touring and playing shows she says, “It’s about feeling like you actually know what you’re doing for an hour, the rest of the time you’re bumbling around trying to make sense of your life”. Although she admits to youthful shyness and years of stage fright, it’s hard to imagine Hynde ‘bumbling’ anywhere, she seems more purposeful than that. Her ability to seek beauty where others might see blandness and decay speak of a songwriter’s sharply observant nature. The unseen interviewer is even briefly questioned, frozen in the headlights of Hynde’ sunfaltering gaze.

A lone walker along an American highway in vegetarian ‘leather’ boots, while the cars whizz anonymously past her... Wandering in her hometown cemetery, marveling at the headstones, “I like to say their names out loud because I think - when was the last time anyone said your name out loud?” she muses.

There’s coverage of the band in Nashville during the recording sessions for the Alone album and live performance clips tracks from the album, as well as archive footage of classic tracks such as "Brass In Pocket" and "Back On The Chain Gang."

Complementing the film is a bonus full length concert performance by the original line-up of the Pretenders from the Sartory-Säle in Cologne, Germany from July 1981, which was filmed for the famous Rockpalast music TV series.

Hynde says, “Rock ‘n’ roll is about being yourself - all the time”.

Bonus Features

Live show from July 1981: 1) The Wait 2) The Adultress 3) Message Of Love 4) Louie Louie 5) Talk Of The Town 6) The English Roses 7) Birds Of Paradise 8) Kid 9) Stop Your Sobbing 10) Private Life 11) Jealous Dogs 12) Day After Day 13) Up The Neck 14) Tattooed Love Boys 15) Bad Boys Get Spanked 16) Precious 17) Brass In Pocket 18) Mystery Achievement
