In stores Friday: Manic Street Preachers - 'Resistance is Futile'

photo: Alex Lake
As a fan from Day One, I'm always excited by the news of fresh music by the Manics. Read the press release below for details...

"International Blue" is the first new release from Manic Street Preachers in four years and is available now in the U.S. It is taken from the band’s 13th studio album Resistance is Futile, out via Shornday/The Orchard on April 13. The single was inspired by the city of Nice in the mid winter sun and the life’s work of French Nouveau realism artist Yves Klein.

Nicky Wire (bass guitar, lyrics) explained “I’d been digesting the lyric for five years, since being in Nice and finally joining the dots between Yves Klein’s International Klein Blue and the vast open blue of the Mediterranean Sea. It was a moment of connection that felt perfectly natural – not forced or intellectualized. A different kind of enrichment that feels increasingly difficult to find. The track itself is carried by the kind of naïve energy that powered ‘Motorcycle Emptiness’”.

James Dean Bradfield (lead vocals, lead guitar) added “Often I just need a great title to set me off. Seeing the word 'blue' struck a chord and set off memories of pure pop records we grew up with – things like the ‘Story of the Blues’ by Wah!, ‘Moon is Blue’ by Colourbox, Orange Juice’s ‘Blue Boy’ and’ In Bluer Skies’ by Echo and the Bunnymen. I immediately thought of the kind of shiny freedom pop we used to hear on the radio as kids and that quickly became the M.O. in my head when writing. I just wanted to make a great Manic Street Preachers driving song; something that evoked the heat haze you see on empty open roads in America. I wanted to channel a Springsteen/War on Drugs sensibility, but through our European filter. Sometimes, aiming for a feeling is enough to make it work”.

Of their first new recordings in four years, the band said: “The main themes of ‘Resistance is Futile’ are memory and loss; forgotten history; confused reality and art as a hiding place and inspiration. It’s obsessively melodic - in many ways referencing both the naive energy of ‘Generation Terrorists’ and the orchestral sweep of ‘Everything Must Go’. After delay and difficulties getting started, the record has come together really quickly over the last few months through a surge of creativity and some old school hard work.”

Following the twin musical departures of 2013’s largely acoustic Rewind the Film and the glacial electronics of 2014’s Futurology, the songs on Resistance Is Futile are the first recorded in the band’s new Door to the River studio (near Newport, UK).

The band head out on tour in the UK in April and play their biggest shows in a decade. They will also be playing several festivals including Robert Smith’s Meltdown and will play with Guns ‘n’ Roses at shows in Germany and Denmark.

Manic Street Preachers recently received the Inspiration Award at the Q Awards at the Roundhouse in London. Previous winners include U2, David Bowie and Patti Smith. The band performed a greatest hits set on the night with support from Sleaford Mods.

Marr tells us, "Call The Comet is my own magic realism. It’s set in the not-too-distant future and is mostly concerned with the idea of an alternative society. The characters in the songs are searching for a new idealism, although there are some personal songs in there too. It’s something that people like me can relate to.”

Recorded with his band in Manchester at Marr’s Crazy Face Studios in Manchester, Call The Comet follows the critically acclaimed Top 10 albums The Messenger (2013) and Playland (2014). The album will be released on digital, CD and vinyl formats along with some special D2C bundle packages.

Matthew Sweet reveals new album, tour info

photo: Evan Carter
Very cool news here. I interviewed Matthew last year (see elsewhere on this blog) and happened to get a copy of this upcoming release then. It's just as good as the predecessor. Hoping some SoCal dates materialize since I missed his lone LA show with the late great Tommy Keene.

Matthew Sweet returns with his 13th studio album, TOMORROW'S DAUGHTER, the follow-up to his sprawling 17-song double album, TOMORROW FOREVER. The album will be available in CD, 180-gram-vinyl LP and digital configurations on May 18 via Sweet's Honeycomb Hideout label through MRI/Sony.

In a new interview with Billboard, Sweet premiered the first single, "I Belong to You," a classic example of his "particular brand of riffy power pop." Sweet also mentions that he's planning to release deluxe, two-LP vinyl editions of Girlfriend, Altered Beast/Son Of Altered Beast and 100% Fun, each with extensive new liner notes, later this year as well as a special Record Store Day Black Friday album (more on that soon). The album tour kicks off on May 23 in Atlanta -- scroll down for complete tour dates.

Listen to "I Belong to You."

It's fair to say that, after a three-decade musical career, the singer/songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist is currently in the midst of a personal musical renaissance that's seen him produce some of the most compelling and ambitious music of his career. Instantly memorable new tunes such as "I Belong to You," "Run Away," "Lady Frankenstein" and "Out of My Misery" demonstrate his uncanny ability to tap into a bottomless well of pop history to craft music that's effortlessly catchy yet deeply personal.

These 12 original songs are the product of a burst of creative inspiration that followed Sweet's 2013 return to his native Nebraska, where he reestablished his Black Squirrel Submarine home studio. Not long after, he lost his mother. This period yielded wealth of brilliant new songs, 17 of which appeared on his epic double album, TOMORROW FOREVER. It instantly became clear that this potent body of work merited a follow-up release, hence TOMORROW'S DAUGHTER. The album features Sweet's incredible touring band - longtime rhythm section Paul Chastain (bass) and Ric Menck (drums) and Jason Victor (Steve Wynn/Dream Syndicate) on guitar.

"When I was young, the artists that I really admired were the ones who always found a way to keep making music and expressing themselves," Sweet says of the album. "To me, those guys were the real artists, and I've tried to hold on to that attitude in my own work."

It's creating new music that remains Matthew Sweet's main concern, and he continues to do so with renewed intensity.

"This feels like a really good time for me, and I feel lucky and grateful to still be doing what I love to do," Sweet asserts. "I feel like I'm in a totally positive place, and maybe moving has been a catalyst for that.

"When I meet young people and they ask for advice about a career in music, I always say, 'Do music because it's what you love to do, and because you'd do it no matter what happens,'" he concludes. "I've tried to keep that attitude about it, because that's always worked for me. I just try to keep doing my thing and keep believing."

Stagecoach '18 news: Keith Urban

It's been two years since the release of Keith Urban's chart-topping album Ripcord. On April 27, he returns with ninth studio album, Graffiti U.

The next day, April 28, he headlines Day 2 of the Stagecoach Country Music Festival in Indio, Calif.

Graffiti U, which includes current single “Coming Home” featuring Julia Michaels, will be available for pre-order April 6 at http://smarturl.it/GraffitiU.

“I’ve been full-on writing, recording, collaborating and creating with some incredibly talented people for Graffiti U, a lot of whom I’ve never worked with before,” said Urban, in a press release. “I can hear how some of the songs will translate live already, which really makes putting on a new show so exhilarating.”

The image on the album cover was taken by photographer Mark Seliger. Track listing is below. Urban's world tour kicks off in June in St. Louis. Lindsay Ell serves as the opening performer for his September performances in Canada, as well as for his debut performance in Rogers, Arkansas.

“It’s not very often you get to share the stage with an artist you’ve looked up to since the beginning of your career,” said Ell, whose recent album The Project debuted at No. 1 on the Country Album Sales Chart. “I am so excited to be touring with Keith Urban and can’t wait to play for fans in the venues I grew up in!"

Kelsea Ballerini will be the supporting act for all other shows.

The Beatles news: Yellow Submarine

Abramorama, in conjunction with Apple Corps Ltd. and Universal Music Group (UMG), is preparing to theatrically release The Beatles’ classic 1968 animated feature film, Yellow Submarine, across North America this July in celebration of its 50th anniversary.

Yellow Submarine was restored in 4K digital resolution; the film’s songs and score were remixed in 5.1 stereo surround sound at UMG’s Abbey Road Studios by music mix engineer Peter Cobbin. Due to the delicate nature of the hand-drawn original artwork, no automated software was used in the digital clean-up of the film’s restored photo chemical elements. This was all done by hand, frame by frame.

Directed by George Dunning, and written by Lee Minoff, Al Brodax, Jack Mendelsohn and Erich Segal, Yellow Submarine began its voyage to the screen when Brodax, who had previously produced nearly 40 episodes of ABC’s animated Beatles TV series, approached The Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein with a unique vision for a full-length animated feature.

Yellow Submarine, based upon a song by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, is a fantastic tale brimming with peace, love, and hope, propelled by Beatles songs, including “Eleanor Rigby,” “When I’m Sixty-Four,” “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” “All You Need Is Love,” and “It’s All Too Much.”

When the film debuted in 1968, it was instantly recognized as a landmark achievement, revolutionizing a genre by integrating the freestyle approach of the era with innovative animation techniques.

Inspired by the generation’s new trends in art, the film resides with the dazzling Pop Art styles of Andy Warhol, Martin Sharp, Alan Aldridge and Peter Blake. With art direction and production design by Heinz Edelmann, Yellow Submarine is a classic of animated cinema, featuring the creative work of animation directors Robert Balser and Jack Stokes with a team of animators and technical artists.

Information on local screenings can be found here: http://www.yellowsubmarine.film

Concert tour roundup: Counting Crows, Live, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Brian Wilson, The The

Counting Crows will celebrate a quarter century of music making by hitting the road for a worldwide "25 Years & Counting" tour, starting with a 40+ city trek across North America this summer. Joining them is the recently reunited band +LIVE+.

Tickets for the tour will go on sale to the general public in select cities starting Friday, April 6 at 10am local time. See below for full tour itinerary and visit livenation.com for full details.

"The nice thing about having 25 years of music to celebrate and seven studio albums we absolutely love to choose from is that we can play a different show every night,” said Crows vocalist Adam Duritz. “The nice thing about touring with +LIVE+ is that we get to spend yet another summer with old friends who play great music. We can't wait!”

+LIVE+ vocalist & guitarist Ed Kowalczyk echoed those sentiments: "+LIVE+ is beyond excited to get out on the road this summer and play for our fans. We are freshly reunited and performing with a confidence and ferocity that we can't wait for people to experience. The fact that we will be sharing the stage once again with the incomparable Counting Crows is icing on the cake!"

In addition to celebrating 25 years of music in 2018, Duritz has also launched a new podcast, Underwater Sunshine! – a series of conversations between noted non-journalist Duritz and his pal, author and music journalist James Campion, about life, music, and whatever comes into their large and incredibly handsome brains. The weekly podcast, published every Monday, currently holds a five-star rating. View it on iTunes HERE.

Counting Crows – Adam Duritz (vocals), Jim Bogios (drums), David Bryson (guitar), Charlie Gillingham (keyboards), David Immergluck (guitar), Millard Powers (bass) and Dan Vickrey (guitar) – have sold more than 20 million albums worldwide after exploding onto the music scene with their multi-platinum breakout album August and Everything After in 1993. The band released seventh studio album Somewhere Under Wonderland in 2014. countingcrows.com

+LIVE+, the multi-platinum band from Pennsylvania--Ed Kowalczyk (vocals, guitar), Chad Taylor (guitar, backing vocals), Patrick Dahlheimer (bass) and Chad Gracey (drums, percussion)--have sold over 22 million albums worldwide and earned 2 No. 1 albums (Throwing Copper, Secret Samadhi). The former produced the band’s biggest single, “Lightning Crashes,” which was #1 at Modern Rock radio for 10 consecutive weeks. Throwing Copper reached #1 on the Billboard Top 200 and eventually surpassed sales of 10 million albums sold. freaks4live.com

Fans can expect to hear Beach Boy classics “Little Saint Nick,” “The Man with all The Toys,” and a selection of Brian’s favorite Yuletide songs including “Blue Christmas” and “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town.”

He will also perform songs from his critically acclaimed solo album What I Really Want for Christmas - named for its Bernie Taupin-penned title track - as well as “Christmasey,” with lyrics by his friend Jimmy Webb.

Now this is a "must see" tour for me. I interviewed Matt for his Dusk album.

Led by singer/songwriter Matt Johnson, THE THE have announced their first live shows in over 15 years.

The post-punk iconoclasts will first tour the UK and Europe starting in late May, with many shows already sold out including London's Royal Albert Hall and Brixton Academy, before launching their North American tour in September. Tickets for the North American tour go on sale Friday, April 6 at 12 noon local time. See below for all dates and details.

The last THE THE album, 2000's NakedSelf, capped off a run of records that included his solo debut Burning Blue Soul (1981), through the band's Soul Mining (1983), Infected (1986), Mind Bomb (1989) and Dusk (1993).

In 2017, THE THE released a new single, "We Can't Stop What's Coming," as part of 2017's Record Store Day, their first new song in 15 years, with Matt Johnson joined by former THE THE members, Zeke Manyika on percussion, James Eller on bass and Johnny Marr on guitar.

It was taken from The Inertia Variations, an 84-minute documentary film, which premiered at the 2017 Edinburgh International Film Festival, and forms part of a wider multimedia project inspired by the poem of the same name by John Tottenham. Additionally in October 2017, THE THE released the Radio Cineola: Trilogy box set.

The first biography of THE THE, "Long Shadows, High Hopes," written by Neil Fraser and fully authorized by Johnson, will be published by Omnibus Press on June 7.
