The Week in Music, part 2: James, Lady Antebellum, Train, Tom Petty, The Drums, American Hi-Fi

Here is the second part of my roundup featuring music news items I received this past week...

Manchester, UK band James' new album La Petite Mort, which hits stores nationwide and all digital platforms on Sept. 16 via BMG.
It was produced by Max Dingel (Killers, Muse, White Lies) and written by the band, with chief lyricist and frontman Tim Booth. Despite the uplifting sound, the release was recorded in the months following the passing of Tim Booth’s mother and his best friend.

Many of the songs deal with facing mortality (hence the album title), but also deal with the realness of life (and death), with a lyrical poignancy, wit and a charm that has become their trademark.
The current lead single "Moving On" has an animated short film that serves as the video and was created by esteemed BAFTA award-winning animator/director Ainslee Henderson.

“My mother's death was clearly a birth of some kind and that description caught Ainslie's imagination” explains Booth.

The group recently embarked on an extensive European tour, performing at all the leading festivals and kicked things off with a huge homecoming gig at Manchester's Summer in the City.

Formed in 1982 and first signed to the infamous Factory Records, James' career includes 12 studio albums and 12 millions records sold worldwide. Countless notable musicians speak highly of the their artistry and songwriting, including Michael Stipe, Chris Martin, Noel Gallagher and Arcade Fire's Richard Reed Parry who claims their 1994 release Wah Wah "changed how I listened to music. And expanded my idea of what collective/group artistic processes could be."
Critically acclaimed Brian Eno produced album Laid was their highest charting release in the U.S., debuting in the Billboard Top 200 in 1993.

James are: Tim Booth (vocals), Jim Glennie (bass), Larry Gott (guitars), Saul Davies (guitar, violin), Mark Hunter (keyboards), David Baynton-Power (drums) and Andy Diagram (trumpet).

Superstar country trio Lady Antebellum's fifth studio album 747 will arrive in stores on Sept. 30. The album’s lead track “Bartender” has become one of their fastest rising singles. Nathan Chapman co-produced the 11-song disc with Lady A for the Capitol Records Nashville release.

“We unanimously knew that our album title had to be '747',” said Lady A’s Hillary Scott. “The track itself has this pushing, driving spirit about it that sums up our attitude right now. We are pushing ourselves as a band and as songwriters…taking ourselves out of our comfort zone and not taking ourselves too seriously. There's an urgency and an energy to it that we've never released before."

“We are so ready to get this music out,” continued Charles Kelley. “To get the reaction we’ve gotten from ‘Bartender’ has only made us more fired up about the rest of these songs!”

“We had the opportunity to write with some new songwriters and really dig for outside songs that were songs we wish we’d written,” added Dave Haywood. “As we took them into the studio, we changed our approach and challenged ourselves to try some new things that were outside of what we’d done before."

Track list:

Three-time Grammy winning band Train’s upcoming 7th studio album Bulletproof Picasso, is available for pre-order now at iTunes in advance of its Sept. 16 release date.

The album’s first single, “Angel In Blue Jeans” is Top 15 at Triple A and Adult Top 40 radio, joining the
San Francisco pop/rock band’s previous hit singles throughout a two decade career.

An evocative video for the new song premiered on VEVO featuring actor Danny Trejo, who starred in the Robert Rodriguez-helmed ‘Mariachi-style’ sagas Machete and Dusk Til Dawn, among others. Hannah Simone from the hit TV show ‘New Girl’ is also featured in the clip.

Bulletproof Picasso was produced by previous Train collaborator Butch Walker.

Frontman Pat Monahan says, “I’ve always wanted to emotionally connect with people through the songs. But I also want to get into people’s lives with this album. We’re very excited about 'Bulletproof Picasso' and we’re looking forward to performing some of the new songs for all our fans.”

Train will be showcasing new tracks in celebration of the album’s upcoming release in September with shows in Los Angeles, New York, and their hometown of San Francisco among others. Several summer festival and one-off dates have also been unveiled (dates below).

The band will also host the second annual Sail Across the Sun Cruise next February 13-17, 2015. Platinum selling pop rockers American Hi-Fi are back and have announced plans to release Blood & Lemonade, their first album in four years, this September via Rude Records.

"Golden State" is the second single to come from the album and closely follows the previous single "Allison."

Singer Stacey Jones says, “'Golden State' is a song about starting over. It's about learning from your past and using that information to forge a new path, a more enlightened perspective. It's knowing that everything we do and experience, even the moments that seem tough, can ultimately lead us to a better place."

Perhaps best known for the hits "Flavor Of The Weak," "Another Perfect Day" and "The Art Of Losing," Blood & Lemonade" is American Hi-Fi’s fifth full length and their first since 2010’s Fight the Frequency.

The Drums' third full-length, Encyclopedia, is due out in the U.S. on Sept. 23.

Singer Jonny Pierce said recently, "not since the 'Summertime' EP has it been just Jacob (Graham) and I left up to our own devices. Now that we're back to just the two founding members, we figured we could do whatever we wanted and run with it."

"Together, we had just one goal: let go of any preconceived ideas that anyone has about The Drums and make songs to be as grand and majestic as we want them to be."

"'Encyclopedia' is full of magic and surprise while maintaining a serious, more weighty tone throughout," continued Pierce. "We were feeling very angry, confused, and alone when we made this album; and we wanted to be very honest this time around, even if being honest meant making some people uncomfortable. We've left the beach for higher ground, always searching for hope."

New single "Magic Mountain" is a sparkling reflection of our last three years," said Pierce. "It's about shedding off what binds you and protecting what's good, finding a safe place away from everyone and everything that wants to destroy you."

The alt-pop band formed in Brooklyn in 2009.

Longtime Southern California punk band Pennywise has released its 11th studio album, Yesterdays on Epitaph Records. Jim Lindberg is back as the front man, and Yesterdays includes songs written by original bassist Jason Thirsk, who passed away in 1996.

In celebration of the release, Pennywise will play several record release shows in Southern California, including July 20 at the House of Blues in Hollywood. Additionally, Pennywise will be on the Summer Nationals tour with The Offspring and Bad Religion July 29 – August 31 with a festival appearance at Aftershock on September 14.

There have been two major changes in the Pennywise story since their last release, All or Nothing (2012). First, front man Jim Lindberg has rejoined the band since leaving in 2009. And second, several songs featured on Yesterdays were written by deceased bass player, Jason Thirsk and have been properly recorded in the studio for the first time.

"We always wanted to go back and record these songs because later in our career we started to get more political and angry— that may have turned some people off but that's what we were feeling at the time," Lindberg explains. "In the back of our minds we knew we had these cool, old songs that were more life-affirming, it just took us 25 years to get back to it."

God Help The Girl is a musical feature film, written and directed by Stuart Murdoch, lead singer of the group Belle and Sebastian.

The soundtrack has been announced for a Sept. 2 release date on Milan Records, while the film will be released theatrically and On Demand on Sept. 5 from Amplify. (In the UK, the film is being released Aug. 16 via Metrodome, with the soundtrack to follow on Aug. 18).

There are three new songs by Murdoch sung by the cast: "Pretty When the Wind Blows," "I Dumped You First" and "I'm Not Rich." All of the other songs have been re-recorded and/or remixed with performances by the cast, with the exception of "Dress Up In You," from Belle & Sebastian's The Life Pursuit.

Half of the songs were recorded live during the making of the movie with different musicians than the originals. Dialogue and score interspersed throughout the soundtrack, all intended to create an impressionistic audio version of the film.

Murdoch aspired to tell the story of “a better summer, or at least a summer when something happened. It happened to a boy and a girl and a girl in a city roughly the same size and population of Glasgow. Perhaps the canals were a bit grimier, the high-rise buildings taller, the streets emptier when you needed them to be, and the beat clubs busier than the ones around here. But on the whole the city was this one.”

The music takes center stage and many songs resemble in their musical aspect the other work of Stuart Murdoch and Belle and Sebastian. The film was shot, edited, scored and mixed in Glasgow.

The Week in Music: Little Big Town, Jackson Browne, Lucinda Williams, Interpol, Bruce Hornsby, Sloan, The Strypes, Rocco Deluca, Game Theory

Since I was away from the computer for several days, here's part 1 of my roundup of notable music news you might have missed this past week…

Grammy Award-winning country group Little Big Town will release their sixth studio album, Pain Killer, on Oct. 21 through Capitol Records Nashville.

The album, produced by Jay Joyce, features current single “Day Drinking,” the band's highest chart debut to date, and was written by LBT’s Karen Fairchild, Jimi Westbrook, Phillip Sweet and songwriters Troy Verges and Barry Dean. The foursome co-wrote eight of the 13 tracks on the album.

"Sometimes you don't know what's going to happen in the studio. You just have to dive in head first and work hard to do something unique," said Fairchild. "We're always striving and pushing ourselves to go somewhere new. Pain Killer is a new place for sure."

Little Big Town, who have been together for 15 years, release Pain Killer on the heels of their highly successful, platinum-selling album Tornado almost exactly two years later.

Tornado was one of only 10 country albums to achieve platinum certification in 2013 and features back-to-back #1 hit singles “Pontoon” and “Tornado.” The 2x platinum-selling “Pontoon” took home the Grammy Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance and the CMA Award for Single of the Year.

Even before the world lost musician Scott Miller last year, the work he did with his band Game Theory had been unavailable for decades. Omnivore Recordings will remedy the lack of Game Theory recordings as it launches a series of expanded reissues featuring the Davis, California band’s classic catalog.

Blaze of Glory, originally released in 1982, was the first Game Theory album; previously the band used the name Alternate Learning. The LP laid the cornerstone for the layered power pop for which Game Theory would become known, while foreshadowing Southern California’s neo-psychedelic Paisley Underground sound (Scott Miller and Dream Syndicate nucleus Steve Wynn were roommates at UC Davis in the late 1970s).

Unavailable in its original form since its initial release (Blaze of Glory was later re-recorded/remixed for an out-of-print 1993 CD compilation that now commands top dollar in collector circles), the new Omnivore CD, out Sept. 2, contains the original album’s 12 songs, supplemented with 15 bonus tracks — four from Alternate Learning and 11 previously unissued tracks from Scott Miller’s archive.

The vinyl LP also sees its first reissue in more than three decades. The first pressing on translucent pink vinyl (followed by black vinyl in subsequent pressings) contains a download card for the entire 27-song program.

The package was mastered from the original tapes and featuring a 24-page booklet in the CD (eight pages in the LP) with rare photos, an essay from Game Theory tour manager (and set co-producer) Dan Vallor, and remembrances from band members and colleagues, including Wynn.

Game Theory bass player Fred Juhos, says in the liner notes, “The first record foreshadows Scott’s other recordings admirably. Within it, I hear some of Scott’s freshest material. It’s innocent and contains no hint of the jaded cynicism found in his later work.”

According to Vallor, “Scott had mixed feelings about his early work. At times he was convinced it was best not revisited, and at other times he appreciated that it could stand on its own. His uncertainty was borne of rigorous standards he set for himself as a writer and as a musician. But his work from the very start shows an unrelenting creative energy rarely matched by his contemporaries. For many of us, each record remains amongst the best releases of the year they first appeared, and Blaze of Glory remains the wonderfully uncynical pop gem Scott mischievously packaged in a trash bag when it first appeared on vinyl in 1982.”

“With Game Theory and his later band, The Loud Family,” Vallor continues, “Scott created some of the most inventive and sublime pop music of the ’80s and ’90s. While he never saw the kind of commercial success some of his friends, peers, and even fans attained, his commitment to his art was unwavering.”

Reissues of highly sought-after Game Theory titles like Real Nighttime and Lolita Nation are on the horizon.

But the story begins with Blaze of Glory.

On Sept. 9, Sloan will release their 11th studio album Commonwealth via Yep Roc Records. The 15-song collection finds the Toronto-based rock quartet's Jay Ferguson, Chris Murphy, Patrick Pentland, and Andrew Scott all contributing original compositions to each record.

Designated by the four playing card suits, the essentially solo sides allow for all four members’ work to be heard. As if the four-sided concept weren’t challenge enough, Commonwealth finishes with "Forty Eight Portraits," an 18-minute pop suite that fills the entirety of Scott’s closing Spade side.

Song cycles and concept-driven albums are nothing new to Sloan. Over the course of 10 albums and more than 30 singles – not to mention multiple EPs, hits and rarities collections, live albums and official bootlegs released, like all the band’s work, on their own independent label, Murderecords – the band has tackled countless creative conceits.

Commonwealth follows 2011’s
acclaimed The Double Cross.

Three-time Grammy Award winner Lucinda Williams has announced the Sept. 30 release of her first-ever double studio album, Down Where The Spirit Meets The Bone. It will be released on Williams’ new independent label Highway 20 Records, via Thirty Tigers.

Down Where The Spirit Meets The Bone features 20 new songs, with 18 written solely by Williams. Opening track “Compassion” was originally a poem by her father, the poet Miller Williams, in which she wrote the music and additional lyrics.

This is a personal milestone for the Americana artist as it marks the first time she has composed music for one of her father’s poems, and it is from that song that the album title was taken. The only cover is the JJ Cale penned “Magnolia.”

Williams explores new dynamics and incorporates improvisational elements into some of her songs. There are extended performances by guests that include guitarists Bill Frisell and Tony Joe White, Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan, Elvis Costello’s famed rhythm section of Pete Thomas (drums) and Davey Faragaher (bass) and Wallflowers guitarist Stuart Mathis. Jakob Dylan adds harmony vocals on “It’s Gonna Rain,” while Williams’ longtime rhythm section of Butch Norton (drums) and David Sutton (bass) make significant contributions.

Down Where The Spirit Meets The Bone was produced by Williams, Tom Overby and Greg Leisz.

Irish garage rock band The Strypes return with their second EP, 4 Track Mind, available digitally on Aug. 19. This is their first release for Photo Finish/Republic Records. The EP will feature four tracks previously not available in the U.S., including “Hard to Say No,” “So They Say,” “Still Gonna Drive You Home,” which was produced by Paul Weller and a U.S. exclusive cover of The Ramones' "Rockaway Beach." Supporting the EP, the band will do some shows next month.

Since arriving on the scene last spring with their acclaimed debut album, Snapshot, the band has performed on the Letterman and Conan shows. The Strypes are currently recording their sophomore LP due out in 2015.

Rocco Deluca is gearing up for his Aug. 19 self-titled release via 429 Records – the fourth CD overall. Produced by Daniel Lanois, DeLuca builds upon the brooding and haunting mood of his last solo album, 2011’s Drugs ‘N’ Hymns.

Currently residing in Silver Lake, Calif., Rocco hosted a number of recording sessions in his home studio the “Effie House” with notable local musicians, “local folks and family,” including drummer Oliver Charles (Ben Harper), guitarist and vocalist Christian Letts (Edward Sharpe), bassist Seth-Ford Young (Edward Sharpe), violinist Odessa Jorgensen, bassist Gus Siefert (The Black Keys, Beck), vocalist Soko and drummers Josh Collazo (Edward Sharpe) and Jonathan Wright.

Deluca accompanies his voice, as usual, with a National guitar and lap steel. Rocco will tour next month (see dates below).

Says DeLuca, “When Daniel hears music he believes in, he simply calls it ‘soul music.’ He follows his heart and instincts. He’s such a raw human being and is very direct and truthful and he brings honor and dignity to all he does, whether he’s playing the pedal steel or mixing. He’s a master at recognizing the most important things in the mix and I trust him to find the most important sentiment, even when it’s the voice of the slide guitar which best tells the song’s story.”

Veteran pianist/singer-songwriter Bruce Hornsby has long been fascinated with old-time American roots forms – hymns, blues, country, bluegrass, old folk, shaped-note religious songs and the like.

His new two-disc set, Bruce Hornsby – Solo Concerts - the first for Vanguard Records - will be available Aug. 25 and allows him to explore that fusion of styles, along with classical music, jazz and pop.

The album’s 21 tracks are culled from solo concerts performed by Hornsby in the U.S. from 2012-13, bringing together disparate “information” from musical languages often thought to be opposed: Americana roots music, folk-pop, film scores and modern classical, what Hornsby calls an “unholy alliance.”

There are solo renditions of his radio hits, songs like “Mandolin Rain” and “The Valley Road” as well as forays into the kind of old-timey music he performed at the start of his career – playing accordion in a band that featured fiddles, banjos and dulcimers.

Hornsby also explores modern classical music with the dissonance and expressive chromatics of 20th century 12-tone experimental composers like Austrians Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern, as well as American modernists like Elliot Carter, the Hungarian György Ligeti or the French mystic Olivier Messiaen.

On this live set, he champions what he calls “two-handed independence,” a phrase to describe a piano performance where one hand doesn’t just accompany a melody played by the other, but rather, as in boogie-woogie, simultaneously achieves a parallel compositional and musical life and vitality of its own.

The album starts with “Song E (Hymn in E-Flat),” from a Spike Lee score Hornsby composed several years ago, then segues into “Preacher in the Ring,” a boogie tune, “an old pattern I was shown by a longtime cohort, so I wrote the song based on that pattern, which illustrates that two-handed independence.”

“I think I’ve found a middle ground,” Hornsby says, “where you’re reaching and broadening your language but still connecting with someone perhaps used to hearing — for an entire lifetime — only those seven white notes and those simple chords.”

Bruce Hornsby is currently on tour with Pat Metheny through early August.

Mellencamp Live '03 album out now

John Mellencamp Performs Trouble No More Live at Town Hall is available now through Universal Music Enterprises. The newly mixed and mastered concert recording can be purchased on CD, digital or vinyl.

Released in 2003, Mellencamp’s acclaimed Trouble No More made a No. 1 debut on Billboard’s Blues chart. Featuring Mellencamp and his band’s takes on 11 American folk and blues classics, including Robert Johnson’s “Stones In My Passway,” Son House’s “Death Letter,” Woody Guthrie’s “Johnny Hart,” Willie Dixon’s “Down In The Bottom,” Lucinda Williams’ “Lafayette,” and several others, the album was recorded and mixed in just 17 days.

On July 31, 2003, John Mellencamp performed the complete album for a sold-out audience at New York’s Town Hall. For the concert, Mellencamp was joined by the same musicians who recorded the studio album: Mike Wanchic (guitars), Andy York (guitars), Miriam Sturm (violin), Dane Clark (drums), John Gunnell (bass) and Michael Ramos (keyboards).

They also performed stripped-down versions of Mellencamp’s “Small Town,” “Paper In Fire” and Pink Houses,” as well as Bob Dylan’s “Highway 61 Revisited” for the intimate audience of 1,500 people, which included members of Woody Guthrie’s family.

CD and digital audio packages both feature the complete 15-song concert, while the vinyl LP highlights 10 performances from the show. All three configurations include a new liner notes essay by Bob Merlis.

This fall, Mellencamp will release his 22nd full-length album, Plain Spoken, on Republic Records.

Weezer news

Weezer will release their ninth album, Everything Will Be Alright In The End, on Sept. 30 via  Republic Records. Produced by Ric Ocasek, who previously produced the band’s first and third records (“The Blue Album” and “The Green Album”), Everything Will Be Alright In The End is the alt-rock/pop band’s first collection of new material in four years.

Since forming in 1992, Weezer has released a myriad of celebrated, chart-topping albums, selling over 13 million records worldwide. Following an intensely prolific couple years at the end of the aughts, the band chose to deliberately dial down the tempo in 2010, a move singer/guitarist Rivers Cuomo says allowed him to write at a slower pace, giving the songs he wanted to use for an album the time to gradually grow into their final forms.

He started almost every song on the piano, eventually transferring them to the guitar before taking them to the band. When it came time to record the material, Weezer reunited with the man who helped them make some of their most popular work, ex-Cars frontman Ric Ocasek. Three groups of the new songs are organized thematically.
