Unique New Order live recording from '17 coming this summer; European tour dates

photo: Warren Jackson
I'm always very interested in anything New Order does. This concert recording sounds very intriguing. Read more from the press release and Euro tour dates below...

Joy Division made their television debut on Tony Wilson’s So It Goes program in 1978.

For the celebrated show, New Order deconstructed, rethought and rebuilt a wealth of material from throughout their career: familiar and obscure, old and new.

∑(No,12k,Lg,17Mif) New Order + Liam Gillick: So it goes...(Yes, that's the title) will be released July 12 on triple vinyl, double CD and digital formats. Pre-order the album and listen to “Sub-culture” live from the 2017 Manchester International Festival here.

The triple vinyl edition will be housed in a hardback slip case with spot gloss varnish and will feature transparent red, green and blue LPs as well as a 24-page deluxe booklet. The double CD edition will come packaged in a triple gatefold sleeve and a deluxe booklet.

The new live album was recorded live on July 13, 2017 and includes the full show as well as three additional tracks recorded over the residency to give listeners a full representation of the breadth of material performed. Featuring tracks such as “Disorder” – from Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures and not played live for 30 years – up to 2015’s “Plastic” from New Order’s critically acclaimed Music Complete, this is the perfect document of those magical five nights.

Created in collaboration with visual artist Liam Gillick – who has previously presented solo exhibitions at venues such as Tate Britain and MoMA in New York – and orchestrated by composer-arranger Joe Duddell, a fellow son of Manchester and a frequent New Order collaborator, the live show was performed by the band with a 12-strong synthesiser ensemble from the Royal Northern College of Music.

This summer New Order will be performing at festivals throughout Europe and have just announced a headline tour for October playing Prague, Munich, Berlin, Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam.

China Crisis concert review: Riverside, Calif.

photo: George A. Paul
The first time I caught China Crisis in concert was September 2014 at the Greek Theatre in LA, when it made a rare U.S. live appearance during the Retro Futura Tour alongside Howard Jones, Thompson Twins' Tom Bailey, Midge Ure and others: https://newwavegeo.blogspot.com/2014/09/concert-review-retro-futura-tour-feat.html.

That was just a short "opening act" set though. The veteran Liverpool band - founding lead singer Gary Daly and guitarist Eddie Lundon, plus a tour keyboardist and a saxophonist - returned to Southern California last Friday at Romano's Concert Lounge and did a far more fulfilling 90-minute performance.

Although the venue wasn't filled, some followers in attendance traveled from afar. A quick survey by Daly revealed various people came from nearby states (possibly to attend the following day's Like Totally '80s festival, which China Crisis was scheduled to play before an abrupt cancellation) and other distant locations. Several British fans made their presence known as well.

During China Crisis' Eighties heyday, the sophisticated synth-pop band placed five top 40 singles and three successful albums on the U.K. charts. Stateside, it had more of a cult following and a minor hit on Billboard's Dance Club chart in "Working with Fire and Steel." More recently, Daly and Lundon used crowdfunding platform PledgeMusic to release Autumn in the Neighbourhood - the first China Crisis studio album in 20 years.

Billowy synth sounds and a fresh sax intro on "The Soul Awakening" launched the impressive 16-song Riverside concert. The distinctly new wave-sounding wash of synth amid "Temptation's Big Blue Eyes" (the first of five tracks from 1982 debut album Difficult Shapes and Passive Rhythms, Some People Think It's Fun to Entertain) and the experimental "Feel to be Driven Away" mined similar sonic territory as the Human League and Talking Heads. Those were two acts Daly said the band was trying to one-up at the time.

Before China Crisis enthralled fans with the luxurious textures of "Bigger the Punch I'm Feeling," Daly told an interesting story about how Steely Dan's Walter Becker came to produce the most successful album by China Crisis, 1985's Flaunt the Imperfection (which I bought on cassette upon release and still own). The reggae-leaning "Strength of Character," another track from said album, boasted some supple sax work and was an early standout.

A gorgeous Lundon-sung "Fool," the newest song, fit in well with the older material. First-ever single "African and White" proved infectious as ever. Another highlight was the ebullient vibe of "Arizona Sky," which Daly said was about touring America in the '80s (a less favorable anecdote revolved around serving as opener for Simple Minds back in the day).

Nearing the end, China Crisis sounded strong on "King in a Catholic Style." After it ended, a woman brought a cake onstage to salute Daly's birthday for the band's social media and he took a good-natured swipe at Depeche Mode ("they might fill stadiums, but not people's hearts").

Ethereal UK hit "Christian" was memorable as Daly gestured while he sang. Finally, the band concluded with the dancey audience request "Working with Fire and Steel."

Setlist: The Soul Awakening/Temptation's Big Blue Eyes/Feel to be Driven Away/Red Sails/Best Kept Secret/Bigger the Punch I'm Feeling/Strength of Character/Fool/African and White/Tragedy and Mystery/Arizona Sky/Black Man Ray/Wishful Thinking/King in a Catholic Style/Christian/Working with Fire and Steel

Roger Daltrey to release 'The Who's Tommy: Orchestral'; touring now

In the of Summer 2018, Roger Daltrey and his band toured the U.S.A. performing The Who's classic album Tommy with symphony orchestras, an experience that Daltrey described as ‘magical.'

Featuring a new orchestration by the composer and arranger David Campbell this incarnation of Tommy celebrates the 50th anniversary of the album’s first release. Preview "Pinball Wizard" here.

The album, which was recorded in Budapest and Bethel in upstate New York, the scene of the first Woodstock festival 50 years ago, was produced by Roger Daltrey and Keith Levenson (who worked on the touring version of the Tommy Musical) and features the core band of Simon Townshend – Vocals / Guitar, Frank Simes – Guitar, Scott Devours – Drums, Jon Button – Bass, and Loren Gold – keyboards, all of whom have played with The Who live. Keith Levenson conducted The Budapest Scoring Orchestra from new orchestrations by David Campbell.

Roger Daltrey on Tommy’s enduring appeal after 50 years and why it sounds better with an orchestra “Pete’s music is particularly suited to being embellished by the sounds that an orchestra can add to the band. Tommy can mean whatever you want it to mean, I use the characters in it as metaphors for parts of the human condition, so it’s a kind of a story of the human spirit. Even though it is 50 years on, I approach it as though I'm singing it for the first time.”

Since it was first debuted at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in Soho London in early May 1969, Tommy has had many different live outings; it was performed in full at the Woodstock and Isle Of Wight Festivals in 1969, it was the basis for a ballet in Canada in 1970, it was a full-blown opera in Seattle in 1971, in 1972 it was recorded as an orchestral piece by the London Symphony Orchestra featuring Stevie Winwood, Rod Stewart, Richie Havens, Peter Sellers and Ringo Starr, there was the infamous 1975 movie directed by Ken Russell starring Elton John, Eric Clapton, Tina Turner, Ann-Margaret, Oliver Reed, Jack Nicholson and Roger Daltrey. After that, the band didn't perform it again until 1989 in Los Angeles when guests such as Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Elton John & Patti Labelle were part of the show. In 1993, the musical version opened on Broadway and won five Tony awards before transferring to The West End where it went on to win three Olivier awards.

The band played it in full, for what they have said is the last time for the Teen Cancer Trust at The Royal Albert Hall in 2017 but will be performing parts of their classic rock opera on their 2019 North American tour, The Who: Moving On!, utilizing up to 50 local musicians from the greatest symphonies across the country at every show starting with May 7 in Grand Rapids, MN. $1 from each ticket sold online for the tour will benefit Teen Cancer America. After successfully establishing the Teen Cancer Trust in London, Daltrey and Townshend launched Teen Cancer America in 2012. The charity has devoted Teen Cancer units being opened in hospitals across the U.S. TCA’s work has impacted more than 5,000 young people and their families nationwide during the last six years. More info on TCA, teencanceramerica.org or the WHO tour dates, thewho.com.

Keith Levenson, co-producer of Tommy Orchestral is currently on the road as coordinator and conductor for the orchestra for the Who’s Moving On! Tour. Levenson has worked with Daltrey since 1994, when he worked on the ‘Daltrey Sings Townshend’ Summer Tour and went on to conduct more symphony tours with Daltrey including the ‘British Rock Symphony’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz’ at Lincoln Center.

Keith Levenson has conducted and created arrangements for KISS, Meatloaf, Alice Cooper, Yes, The British Rock Symphony, Peter Frampton, Paul Rodgers, Darlene Love and Nigel Kennedy among many others. As a Broadway/National Tour Music Director/Supervisor, Keith has conducted the musicals ‘Annie’ with Nell Carter and Sally Struthers, ‘The Best Little Whorehouse’ in Texas with Ann-Margret, Jason Robert Brown’s ‘The Bridges of Madison County,’ Franco Dragone’s ‘India!,’ ‘Grease,’ ‘Peter and Pan’ with Cathy Rigby.

I've been a big fan of the band since "Rock Lobster" first came out and have reviewed their shows several times in recent years (see below). I'm really looking forward to the new version of their classic album. Read the press release for all the details...

The B-52s soared in 1989, propelled by the band’s first Top 10 hits “Love Shack” and “Roam.” They were breakthrough singles from the Athens, Georgia-based group’s fifth studio release, Cosmic Thing. That record reached #3 on the Billboard Album Chart, sold more than four million copies in the U.S.

It will be the 30th anniversary of Cosmic Thing this summer and the B-52s are taking the party on the road with an extensive tour of Europe and the U.S. Also, Rhino Records will introduce an anniversary edition of the album that features newly remastered sound, B-sides, remixes and unreleased concert recordings from 1990’s Cosmic Tour.

On June 28 – one day after the album’s official 30th anniversary – Rhino will release Cosmic Thing: 30th Anniversary Expanded Edition. The two-disc set is accompanied by a booklet that includes liner notes from journalist and author T. Cole Rachel, song lyrics, and unseen photos of the band from that time period. The music will be available on the same day through digital download and streaming services.

The anniversary edition opens with a newly remastered version of the original album, which was recorded by Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Cindy Wilson and Keith Strickland, and co-produced by Nile Rodgers and Don Was. Along with the original album, the two-disc set also includes five newly remastered bonus tracks that spotlight B-sides and remixes like “B-52’s Megamix” and “Roam” (Extended Remix).

The collection’s second disc is an unreleased live album that captures the B-52s performing live in Texas in August 1990 during the band’s Cosmic Tour. The performance includes seven songs from Cosmic Thing along with several other B-52’s classics such as “Rock Lobster” and “Dance This Mess Around” from the group’s 1979 self-titled debut; and “Private Idaho” and “Give Me Back My Man” from 1980’s Wild Planet.

All songs were recorded during the band’s August 4 show at The Pavillion in The Woodlands, Texas except for “Whammy Kiss,” which was recorded the previous night during the band’s show in Dallas.
