On Sept. 10, Sony Music will release Sound System, the complete remastered recorded works of The Clash.

Contained within classic boombox packaging designed by Paul Simonon, the box set contains the band’s five remastered studio albums (across eight CDs).

Three other discs feature demos, non-album singles, rarities and B-sides; a DVD with previously unseen footage shot by both Julien Temple and Don Letts, original promo videos and live footage; an owner’s manual booklet; reprints of the band’s original ‘Armagideon Times’ fanzine as well as a brand-new edition curated and designed by Paul Simonon; and merchandise including dog tags, badges, stickers and an exclusive Clash poster.

Released simultaneously, The Clash - Hits Back features 33 of the band’s iconic tracks across a 2-CD set or a 3-LP vinyl set. The tracklist is sequenced from the band’s legendary Brixton Fairdeal show in 1982.

The Clash – Hits Back contains the best studio recordings of the full set, plus 8 additional iconic tracks. It comes with the original setlist, handwritten by Joe Strummer which he usually taped to the back of his Telecaster before each gig.

Sick Puppies news

Sick Puppies new album Connect is scheduled for July 16 through Capitol Records/Drilldown Entertainment. First single “There’s No Going Back,” arrives at Modern/Active Rock on June 3. 

Last week, the Australian rock trio revealed the cover art for Connect and single teaser exclusively to their Facebook fans http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3YR9VT3gec.

Next up is a a video trailer for “There’s No Going Back” on May 23, followed by a behind the scenes look on May 30, leading into the official video premiere June 6 - all happening across VEVO.

Connect follows sophomore CD, Tri-Polar, which has sold nearly a half-million units and contains the #1 Rock radio track "You're Going Down,” the Top 10 Modern Rock/Active Rock hits "Odd One” & “Riptide” and the cross-format song "Maybe."

 

Singer/guitarist/co-founder Shim Moore says: “We’ve always had the colors to work with, but we really got to use some broad strokes in Polar Opposite, our 2011 acoustic record. It was always a dream of mine to work with strings and a choir, and our producer made it kinda trippy and unusual on Polar Opposite. So I was looking forward to taking some of the elements of that, and furthering some melodies and sentiments of [2007’s US debut] Dressed Up As Life, and some heaviness from Tri-Polar. It’s an amalgamation of all into one, which is why I think it’s our best work to date.”

Rolling Stones Anaheim #2 concert wrap up; 'Crossfire' doc out on DVD

If you have a chance (and the dough) to catch one of the shows on the Rolling Stones current '50 & Counting' Tour of North America, I'd highly recommend it.

Thanks to a purchase of a pair of $85 tickets through the band's web site, my friend and I were among randomly fans chosen to watch the second Anaheim show on Saturday night from inside the general admission tongue pit.

Each of the shows on this tour include 3-4 wild card song slots which rotate. Some stops - like tonight's second LA Staples Center gig - even get a fan chosen song via the web site. 

More unique is the fact that all concerts so far have included a special guest artist onstage. In O.C., we had Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl on guitar and vocals during "Bitch." I can't recall another recent big name tour where every show had a guest. Grohl gave the song an added fierceness on electric guitar and vocals (see my picture above) and shook his long hair all around.

Having only seen the band live four other times in the past (dating back to the "Steel Wheels" Tour at the LA Coliseum in 1989) from further vantage points, it was a revelation to see how tightly everyone plays together up close.

Even though the four core band members are all pushing 70 or beyond, they still show no signs of slowing down. Especially Mick Jagger.

He constantly ran around the Honda Center stage, giving fans in other areas of the arena a closer view of his rubbery moves and was in fine voice throughout the 2 hour, 20-minute set. At one point, Jagger joked about his driver having to take several different freeways to avoid traffic en route from LA to OC.

Ron Wood and Keith Richards both did a great job on lead and rhythm guitars and their traditional "weaving" playing style. Wood had a blast onstage and often paid attention to concergoers up front, flung guitar picks, acknowledged young family members near the front or just plain hammed it up (I sure wish he could reform The Faces with Rod Stewart after the next Stones hiatus!). Wood even engaged in some tasty slide and pedal steel work. Meanwhile, Charlie Watts kept the rhythm steady as a well-oiled machine. 

This tour comes on the back of "Grrr!," a 50-track, 3CD career retrospective released last November via UMe/Interscope/ABKCO Records. The digipak has a half dozen archival photos within the booklet and two new songs - "Doom and Gloom" and "One More Shot." Both beefy rockers fit in naturally alongside all the classics on Saturday night.  

Highlights among the 22-song set included "Gimme Shelter," where Jagger mixed it up with longtime backing vocalist Lisa Fischer, the freshened-up groove on "Sympathy for the Devil," regular tour guest/onetime Stones guitarist Mick Taylor's bluesy playing on an extended "Midnight Rambler" (Jagger's harmonica chops remain very much intact), "Start Me Up" (that opening continues to be shiver inducing) and "You Can't Always Get What You Want" (USC Thornton Chamber Singers did the intro).

Directed by Brett Morgen, Crossfire Hurricane provides a new perspective on the Stones’ journey from blues-obsessed teenagers in the early 1960s to rock royalty. The film has a uniquely immersive style and tone, placing the viewer right on the frontline of the band’s most legendary escapades.

 

Crossfire combines extensive historical footage, much of it widely unseen, with contemporary commentaries by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood and former Stones Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor, plus period interviews, extensive live performance material and news archives.

 

Bonus features on the DVD and Blu-Ray include previously unreleased concert footage -  “Live in Germany ‘65,” NME Poll Winners concert footage from 1964 and 1965, an interview with Morgen, “The Sound and Music of Crossfire Hurricane,” footage from The Arthur Haynes Show (1964) and the theatrical trailer.

 

Asked in a formative interview in the film what it is that sets them apart from other groups, Jagger says with quiet understatement: “A chemical reaction seems to have happened.” Keith Richards added, “You can't really stop the Rolling Stones, you know when that sort of avalanche is facing you, you just get out of the way.”

Peter Hook to tour US with New Order albums set

Peter Hook & The Light will debut their performances of the first two New Order albums, “Movement” (1981) and “Power, Corruption & Lies” (1983) to North American audiences for the first time in September.

In the first international dates to be announced for The Light, this run of the United States and Canada (full routing is below) sees the band return to cities previously visited, as well as some for the first time, and marks their third tour of North America after dates in December 2010 and September 2011 performing Joy Division’s “Unknown Pleasures” and “Closer” albums.

All of the shows feature full performances of both albums in full, sequential order, which has become a hallmark of The Light’s sets, and will also include singles and B-Sides from the corresponding period including “Everything’s Gone Green”, “Temptation” and “Blue Monday” which New Order generally didn’t include on the releases, preferring their LPs to stand alone in comparison to the singles.

Both albums mark the early development of New Order’s sound whilst also, notably on “Movement”, referring back to the Joy Division template. The final album from the band to be produced by Martin Hannett, Movement’s reputation has grown stronger amongst fans since release for its experimentation, Peter Hook taking lead vocals on two of the album's key tracks, opener “Dreams Never End” and the seminal “Doubts Even Here.”

Some thirty years on from its first release, “Power Corruption & Lies” shows the emergence of what is termed the trademark, archetypal New Order sound and was more enthusiastically received than its predecessor with Rolling Stone terming it "a landmark album of danceable, post-punk music”.

Containing fan favourites such as “Age Of Consent” and “Your Silent Face”, as well as the much loved album tracks, “586” and “Leave Me Alone” it was this album that cemented New Order’s reputation and showed a cohesiveness and new found confidence emanating from the band.

All dates feature “Movement” and “Power, Corruption & Lies” performed in full apart from Riot Fest in Chicago which will see Hooky and his band play a tour exclusive Joy Division set.

Cherry Poppin' Daddies get back in the swing

Cherry Poppin' Daddies have announced the July 16 release of its new album "White Teeth, Black Thoughts," which marks the Oregon band's first jazz and swing-powered outing in more than a decade. 

The deluxe edition includes a bonus disc of material and features guest appearances from Buckwheat Zydeco and Zoot Horn Rollo (Captain Beefheart). 

Despite the double platinum certified 1999 CD "Zoot Suit Riot," frontman Steve Perry and the Daddies never made another swing record, choosing instead to try their hand at Motown soul, R&B, psychedelia, funk, and country, not to mention Latin, Caribbean, and other world music.

"'Zoot Suit Riot' allowed us to continue to do our art," Perry says. "None of this would've been possible without it. I didn't make a record like this new one then because I didn't want to. A lot of the other bands did and that's what I didn't like. It was so orthodox."

That spirit has impelled Cherry Poppin' Daddies forward for nearly two decades. The turn of the century saw the band taking a momentary hiatus, but after touring behind 2009's "Skaboy JFK: The Skankin' Hits of the Cherry Poppin' Daddies," the band - including founding members Dan Schmid (bass) and Dana Heitman (trumpet) - created songs influenced by the Great Recession and held together by a swing beat.

Though the initial concept was to simply "jam it all together," Cherry Poppin' Daddies crafted two divergent song cycles. 

Where much of the contemporary swing scene is built around what Perry calls "clichés and b-movie ideas," the new album scrutinizes contemporary culture. 

On the second disc of the deluxe version, the band's styles span New Orleans swamp rock to hardcore hillbilly boogie. Raucous readings of The Barnyard Playboys' "Flat Butts and Beer Guts" and "Subway Killer" - originally recorded by Perry's own mid-'00s glam rock side project, White Hot Odyssey - sees CPD twisting psychobilly into their own skewed image.

The bonus recordings are further marked by guest appearances from founding CPD guitarist John Fohl (currently serving in Dr. John's Lower 911), Buckwheat Zydeco ("Tchoupitoulas Congregation"), and Zoot Horn Rollo (#62 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time). The Magic Band guitarist's iconic riffola on "Flat Butts & Beer Guts" accentuates Cherry Poppin' Daddies' place in the long continuum of cracked artists distorting and deconstructing the American songbook.

Paul McCartney & The Beatles' 'Help!' news

Avid Beatles fans have been blaming Yoko Ono for the break-up of the Beatles for over 40 years. 

In a surprise gesture, Paul McCartney has come to her defense, stating that she did not cause the break-up, during an interview with Sir David Frost that will air later this year on Al Jazeera English Television.

"She certainly didn't break the group up," the 70-year-old rock-star will be seen telling Sir David Frost in an interview to be broadcast next month. 

"I don't think you can blame her for anything," he says, claiming John Lennon was "definitely going to leave."

Paul McCartney can  been seen on the big screen as his concert film documentary, ROCKSHOW, which features McCartney and Wings during their 1975-1976 “Wings Across America” tour is shown in theatres for the first time in 33 years.

Screenings begin on May 16 at theaters nationwide.

On June 24 (June 25 in North America), Help! makes its Blu-ray debut in a single-disc package pairing the digitally restored film and 5.1 soundtrack with an hour of extra features, including a 30-minute documentary about the making of the film, memories of the cast and crew, an in-depth look at the restoration process, an outtake scene, and original theatrical trailers and radio spots.

Directed by Richard Lester, who also directed the band’s debut feature film, 1964’s A Hard Day’s Night, Help! follows The Beatles as they become passive recipients of an outside plot that revolves around Ringo's possession of a sacrificial ring, which he cannot remove from his finger. As a result, he and his bandmates John, Paul and George are chased from London to the Austrian Alps and the Bahamas by religious cult members, a mad scientist and the London police.

In addition to starring The Beatles, Help! has a great cast of British character actors, and classic Beatles songs “Help!,” “You're Going To Lose That Girl,” “You've Got To Hide Your Love Away,” “Ticket To Ride,” “I Need You,” “The Night Before,” and “Another Girl.”

The Blu-ray package pairs the digitally restored original film with these extra features:
