Trisha Yearwood announces new studio album, tour

Trisha Yearwood's upcoming album, Every Girl, arrives in stores and digital services on Aug. 30. Pre-order it HERE. A limited edition special cover art in vinyl and CD will be available for pre-order on her official Talk Shop Live channel for a limited time.

For the album, Trisha enlisted longtime producer Garth Fundis, who first worked on her double-platinum self-titled 1991 debut. The new songs include “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know” [feat. Kelly Clarkson], “What Gave Me Away” [feat. Garth Brooks] and “Love You Anyway” [feat. Don Henley].

As an avowed Linda Ronstadt fan, she reached out to songwriter Karla Bonoff for a collaboration and ended up recording an emotionally charged take on “Home”— originally cut by Bonnie Raitt. Handpicked by Trisha, the record notably showcases the talents of female writers such as Lucie Silvas, Caitlyn Smith, Patricia Conroy, Ashley McBryde, Gretchen Peters and more.

“I approached this album without any pressure or expectations,” she comments. “I’m so grateful the songs were there. I found 14 tunes I couldn’t live without. You want people to recognize you as an artist, but you also want to take them somewhere they haven’t necessarily been with you before. With the freedom of no expectations, I got back to that feeling I felt on my first album, like I have to do this and put it out there. Over the years, I let go of worrying about perfection. I just wanted to have a good time. I realized maybe that’s when you do your best work.”

Every Girl follows on the heels of the Frank Sinatra homage, Let’s Be Frank, earlier this year. Trisha previously joined forces with Garth Brooks on his 2014 – 2017 sold out world tour.

Berlin + Terri Nunn news

Terri Nunn, John Crawford, and David Diamond, the original multi-platinum selling Berlin band members, first made a national impression 40 years ago with the single “The Metro” and the provocative single, “Sex (I’m A..).

Now the classic lineup has a new album Transcendance - their first since 1984’s Love Life - due Aug. 2 on Cleopatra Records. It will be the trio’s fourth studio album together. The album is produced by ARIA award-winning Australian producers Andy and Thom Mak.

As the band celebrates their 40th anniversary this year, they will take their new and classic music out on tour with their own headlining dates and supporting dates with the B-52’s. There are also UK/European tour dates.

Says Nunn of working again with her original band mates John and David, “It’s a gift I never thought I’d get again! Back in the beginning, I felt scared a lot - of losing this job, of not being good enough - and John was stressed out often trying to write the hit songs the label wanted from us. David Diamond got so stressed out by the band, he left during the second album. Now we’re all older and one of the perks of that is enjoying the ride more that we get to have musically together, relaxing more and appreciating what we have. Less ego involved or need to prove ourselves. We’re also better at what we do, so it’s even more fun writing & playing together now.”

Redlands Bowl preview: Jeff Dayton’s 'Salute to Glen Campbell'

Tribute bands are always performing somewhere, but they rarely have a direct association with the original act.

That’s what makes this Salute to Glen Campbell show a must-see for fans of the legendary Arkansas entertainer who died in 2017 after a long public fight with Alzheimer’s.

The unique concert, coming to the Redlands Bowl on July 9, includes ample hits and anecdotes.

“It’s got credibility. We’re not John Denver last week and Rod Stewart next week like some tribute bands. We have a connection to Glen and his music,” said Jeff Dayton, who spent 15 years (and did nearly 4,000 gigs) with Campbell as guitarist/bandleader.

Dayton often brings along other past Campbell musicians, so there’s “more than one version of the story,” he said. A couple of them will be joining the group onstage in Redlands. “People say they love to hear the songs again and [especially] the stories. We talk about The Wrecking Crew, the TV show, what it was like on the road, time spent on the golf course and the kind of guy he was.”

A Minneapolis native, Dayton studied jazz music at the University of Minnesota (where he backed up Dizzy Gillespie) and briefly played in a band alongside Prince and the Revolution drummer Bobby Z. Dayton earned a music degree at Arizona State University, segued into folk/country music and had a song placement on George Strait’s platinum album, “Does Ft. Worth Ever Cross Your Mind.”

While living and touring around the Grand Canyon State with the Jeff Dayton Band during the late 1980s, he landed an opening slot for Alabama and Merle Haggard in Phoenix. Campbell attended, liked what he saw, jammed with JDB at a private golf event and invited them on tour.

During Dayton’s tenure with Campbell, they performed at local venues including the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa, National Orange Show, Dinah Shore Golf Tournament, Marriott Desert Springs, Orange County Fair with Mark & Brian from KLOS-FM, Crazy Horse Saloons and the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts. Dayton can be heard playing on 1990s efforts “Live! His Greatest Hits” and “Christmas with Glen Campbell.”

The genesis for the special live tribute concert came to Dayton around late 2015.

“I’d had several requests to sing a night of Glen’s music,” he said. “I talked to his management. They were all for it and said, ‘If anybody’s going to go out and do his hits, you’re really the guy to do it.’ It’s really been a wonderful, growing thing. People really love Glen’s music and everywhere I go, they have a lot of obvious joy, great memories and questions.”

In addition to well-known tunes, which Dayton called “the big mountains,” he also does a solo midsection “where I talk about his work in the studio” and all the songs he played on that people might not realize. “Glen put out over 60 albums. I used to kid him and say, ‘We could do a whole show of your hits and do another show and not repeat one song of your B hits.’ He’d reply, ‘What do you mean? They’re all A hits!’”

Those in attendance in Redlands can also expect to hear Dayton’s touching original Campbell-inspired composition “Long Slow Train Out of Town,” at the Redlands show.

“That song really hits a nerve in people,” he said. “I’ve had grown men who I don’t even know walk up to me after a show and just sob on my shoulder because it affected them so deeply. I’m really grateful for that connection with people and that they respond. Every songwriter wants somebody to find something [relatable] in their material. This one seems to be doing that all across the board.”

Besides the Campbell connection, Dayton’s career has included touring stints during the 2000s with Kenny Chesney and Lee Greenwood, writing for Doug Stone and Montgomery Gentry and, more recently, as an extra on the TV series “Nashville” and actor on “Hawaii Five-O.” He also developed the interactive songwriting experience Making Music Nashville Style, produces up-and-coming musicians, performs and records with his own band and regularly does benefits for Alzheimer’s and dementia organizations.

On a related note, longtime Campbell enthusiasts have had some worthy new archival releases to choose from over the past year. “Sings for the King” is a collection of rarely heard Campbell-sung tunes (“Spinout,” “Easy Come, Easy Go,” “Clambake,” “Stay Away Joe”) from 1964-68 that were originally made as demo recordings for Elvis Presley to record. It includes a new studio-constructed duet of both artists on the gospel song “We Call on Him.”

Capitol Records just put out “Glen Campbell – The Legacy (1961-2017),” an impressive four-disc, 78-song box set that touches upon nearly every one of the singer/guitarist’s albums. The physical edition sports an embossed cover, 60-page booklet chock full or rare photos, complete session credits and an informative essay by veteran San Francisco music journalist Joel Selvin.

The collection provides a complete picture of the artist beyond the best-known hits. Most notable: several duets with Anne Murray, Bobbie Gentry and Rita Coolidge; the Brian Wilson-penned and produced “Guess I’m Dumb”; “Good Time Hour” variety show renditions of “MacArthur Park” and Conway Twitty’s “It’s Only Make Believe.”; the final career recordings of tunes by Green Day, Foo Fighters and Paul Westerberg of The Replacements.

Frank Turner salutes women on next album 'No Man's Land'

Frank Turner has announced details of his forthcoming eighth new album, No Man's Land, set for Aug. 16 on Xtra Mile Recordings/Polydor Records. With producer Catherine Marks (St. Vincent, Local Natives) at the helm and featuring a dynamic cast of all-female musicians, it is an album dedicated to telling the stories of notable women whose lives have often been overlooked.

"These stories should have been told already," says Turner of the album and its accompanying podcast series, "Tales From No Man's Land" which launches its first episode today. "And I suspect if they were men they would be better known."

The women featured on the album's 13 tracks come from across wide geographical and historical lines. There's Byzantine princess Kassiani (The Hymn of Kassiani), Egyptian feminist activist Huda Sha'arawi (The Lioness), and Resusci Anne (Rescue Annie), an apocryphal drowned virgin whose face was used as the model for the medical CPR mannequin across the world ("You can't not write a song about a woman who died never having been kissed and then became the most kissed face in history," reasons Turner).

There's the serial killer from the Deep South who plucked her victims from lonely hearts pages (Nannie Doss), the jazz-obsessed heiress who fought for the Free French (Nica Rothschild), a rowdy coach house landlady from 17th century Camden Town accused of witchcraft (Jinny Bigham) and the Wild West vaudeville star shot by a smalltown outlaw (Dora Hand). 

"It's bringing together my two main interests in life, which have always been separate from each other - history and songwriting," explains Turner, who can be found seeking out long-forgotten historical sites on self-guided psycho-geographical strolls when he's not packing out arenas or headlining festivals.

First single 'Sister Rosetta' is about Sister Rosetta Tharpe, one of the most important and influential musicians in American History. On it, you can hear guitar breaks lifted from Tharpe's own back catalogue. "Which I found challenging, because she's a way better guitar player than me," admits Turner.

Despite the record's implicit feminism, it doesn't see Turner's clambering onto any kind of soapbox. "It's not telling anyone what to do or how to live or how to be," he explains, prepared for a variety of different reactions to the project, including those who might be wondering if it's really his place to be singing songs of disenfranchised women. "If there was a crowded field of people writing songs about Princess Kassiani then I would see the argument for me bowing out, but there isn't," he states. "No-one else is writing these songs right now. That's why I want to share these stories."

The album also includes a song written in tribute to his mother, Rosemary Jane, honoring her grit and determination through the harder parts of his childhood.

No stranger to appearing on other people's shows, Turner's own podcast "Tales From No Man's Land" takes a deep dive into each song, like a sonic Cliffs Notes. Produced in collaboration with Somethin' Else content agency, it sees Turner talking to historians and experts at places important to the women on the record, from Jinny Bingham's coach house - which is now Camden's Underworld venue - to Cleveland's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame which only last year honored Rosetta Tharpe, the Dodge City's Boot Hill Museum and Southwark's Cross Bones graveyard.

Each finishes up with Turner singing an acoustic version of the song. "I'm not someone who believes in the supernatural, but there's definitely an imprint when you're at the place that was important to them," says Turner. "It feels like a nice honoring, and a way to say 'hey, we're still thinking about you'."

The first episode of the podcast is out now. There will be 13 episodes, releasing weekly and the podcast will be available from Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Acast and all other podcast platforms.

Florence + the Machine’s debut album 'Lungs' to get expanded box set release

Florence + the Machine’s debut album Lungs was released a decade ago today. To celebrate, Florence + the Machine have created a special collectors box set and digital package that offer up a number of unheard songs, B-sides and rarities including two unreleased demos, “My Best Dress” and “Donkey Kosh” available today.

Lungs (10th Anniversary Edition) will be available both digitally and in physical format (LP, Burgundy LP) on Aug. 16—pre-order here. In addition, there will be a beautiful cloth bound deluxe box set which includes the original Lungs album on pink vinyl, as well as an LP of bonus material that has been curated by Florence herself that has never been available on vinyl before.

This material includes three previously unreleased demo tracks, a rare acoustic version of “My Boy Builds Coffins” and a cover of “Oh! Darling” Live at Abbey Road. Also included within the box are postcards and inserts showcasing previously unseen images from the Lungs era.

Florence + the Machine have released four critically acclaimed albums. Lungs (2009), Ceremonials (2011) and How Big, How Blue (2015) that all reached number 1 in the UK album charts (among many others globally).

More recently, she won an Ivor Novello Award for international Achievement in 2017 and her latest album High As Hope (2018) brought with it her third Mercury Music Prize nomination plus two BRIT Awards nominations.

Out now: Griffin House's 'Rising Star,' with Joy Williams duet

Singer-songwriter Griffin House has released Rising Star, his 13th album. It features co-writes with fellow Nashville musicians Brian Elmquist (The Lone Bellow), Joy Williams (The Civil Wars), and longtime collaborator Jeff Trott (Sheryl Crow), with the first two lending their voices to the recordings.

House also stars in the full-length documentary film “Rising Star”, set for release this year; co-produced with music video director and filmmaker Shane Drake, the film chronicles House's life as a musician and traveling artist, juggling fame and reality. The film features music from his new album as well as his previous catalog. The album is available on CD and vinyl, and digitally via iTunes.

With the help of old friends Paul Moak and Grammy-winning “Album of the Year” producer Ian Fitchuk, Rising Star was done at Moak’s legendary recording studio, The Smoakstack. 

“It was so good to reunite with them and work together again,” House says about Moak and Fitchuk, who helped House make his very first record many years ago. “It’s amazing to watch these guys I started out with in the very beginning who are now world-class musicians and producers winning Grammys. This album seemed to come together with a little more grace and ease than records I’ve made in the past, and I think so much of that is attributed to how good the people I got worth with on this record are, they all just happen to be really good friends too.”

Rising Star opens with its title track, written with House’s old touring buddy, Faroe Islands singer/songwriter Teitur. 

“We thought of as many country cliches as we could, and we started to tell the story of a ‘rising star’ who moves to Music City with a guitar and a dream, like so many do,” says House of their songwriting process.

“At first it was just a song that made us laugh, but as time went on, I liked ‘Rising Star’ so much I decided to put it on my new record.”

The album’s penultimate song is sung as a duet with co-writer Williams. “We worked on the words for an hour or two, and then out of nowhere, she sang this beautiful chorus,” remembers House. “We broke for lunch and came back and finished it that afternoon. It was one of those songs that took years to live and only one short day to write.”

'Live 1969,' archival Elvis Presley in Las Vegas box set, due next month

The 50th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s Las Vegas residency at the International Hotel will be commemorated this summer with "Live 1969," a deluxe 11-CD box set out Aug. 9 on RCA/Legacy.

Marking his return to the stage for the first time in eight years, Elvis’ 1969 Vegas run featured 57 sold-out shows and the live debut of “Suspicious Minds” (the track celebrates its 50th anniversary on Aug. 26). The King of Rock and Roll was backed by two vocal groups (The Imperials and The Sweet Inspirations), a full orchestra and a band later known as the TCB band.

For the first time ever, "Live 1969" features the release of eleven complete sets from Elvis’ '69 engagement. Of these, four are being released in full for the first time ever - including two Elvis shows that have remained almost completely unheard for fifty years (Aug. 22, 25). 

The package also includes a 52-page booklet with rare photos, memorabilia and an oral history by Ken Sharp curated from historic interviews with Elvis, Colonel Tom Parker, Tom Jones, Jerry Schilling, James Burton, Cissy Houston, Terry Blackwood, George Klein, Fats Domino and more.
