The Revivalists have announced new West Coast tour dates in September, with a general on-sale Friday at 10am PST.

Latest album Take Good Care (Loma Vista Recordings) includes hit songs such as "All My Friends", "Change," (which became the band's third Mediabase #1 in a row at the format) and new single "Oh No" which is climbing the Triple A chart.

Frontman David Shaw's Big River Get Down will take place on Sept. 6-7 at RiversEdge Amphitheater in his hometown of Hamilton, Ohio. The festival proceeds are being donated to the city's 4th of July fireworks and RiversEdge Concert Series. Since its inception in 2015, the Big River Get Down has donated more than $80,000 to these events and has helped attract other talented musicians to perform free concerts at RiversEdge Amphitheater. The Revivalists had playing for 10 years when their now platinum-selling single "Wish I Knew You" took off. Amassing more than 300 million total streams, the band has performed on numerous television shows and have an upcoming appearance on Austin City Limits.  The members are: Shaw [lead vocals, guitar], Zack Feinberg [guitar], Andrew Campanelli[drums], George Gekas [bass], Ed Williams [pedal steel guitar], Rob Ingraham [saxophone], Michael Girardot [keyboard, trumpet], and PJ Howard [drums, percussion].

An interview with Nicole Henry; Redlands Bowl show in California on Friday

The Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival kicks off its 96th season in stellar fashion on Friday with an ode to the Great White Way. Nicole Henry will sing selections from The Wiz, Dreamgirls, West Side Story, Les Miserables and others backed by the Redlands Symphony Orchestra.

A Philadelphia native, the singer majored in theater at the University of Miami. Around the same time, she was featured vocalist on tracks by progressive house and trance DJ/producer Noel W. Sanger. “Miracle,” their 1998 pairing with Westbrook Project, reached the Billboard Dance Club chart. Then Henry toured as a background singer for Robert Bradley’s Blackwater Surprise and later became interested in jazz music.

Debut release “The Nearness of You” emerged in 2004 and immediately drew attention in Japan, where it hit the top 10. Since then, Henry has put out five more full-length albums and an EP, encompassing studio and live recordings. Three went top 30 on Billboard’s jazz chart, while two live cover songs - Rose Royce’s “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore” and Bob Marley & the Wailers’ “Waiting in Vain” - fared even better on the trade magazine’s Smooth Jazz Songs tally. Henry won a Soul Train Music Award in ’13 and sang The National Anthem at the Orange Bowl last year.

We connected with Henry - who has cited Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughn as influences and possesses an expressive, soulful voice that often recalls Whitney Houston and Natalie Cole - via email about her first IE appearance.

Question: What are your thoughts about appearing at the Redlands Bowl?
Answer: It’s fabulous to be part of the beautiful “offering” that is Redlands Bowl Performing Arts. It’s just wonderful that the vision of the Bowl was to give all people free access to the arts. I’m a firm believer that the arts shape and reflect a civilization. When arts are supported in this way, it allows for community, conversation, understanding, learning, expression, fun and a collective celebration. So, I feel tasked with a fabulous responsibility.

Q: Will the “Broadway and Beyond” concert include your personal picks from the musicals and ones that work best with an orchestra?

A: As a lover of big and beautiful music, I think any song can work with orchestra. These are definitely some of my favorites, but this is only my first batch of [live] songs for an orchestra.

Q: You've done Diana Ross’ "Home" from The Wiz before on your 2013 live album “So Good, So Right.” Is that a chance it will make the setlist?
A: Yes, I’d bet good money on that.

Q: Since you earned a degree in theater, is singing compositions musicals extra special for you?

A: Just being able to sing professionally for the last 18 years has been an incredible blessing. I’m fortunate to have been a direct part of so many people’s lives. So, it’s all special for me.

Q: Does preparing for the orchestral format present more challenges than your usual jazz or R&B-oriented concert?

A: It is a wonderful combination of limitations and freedom compared to a smaller format. Usually I’m with a quartet or quintet, where you can extend a song live, give more solos or talk in between a song. But you can’t even begin to consider anything like that when you’ve got 70+ people going in one direction. Once that train leaves the station it is not stopping. The freedom and fun of vocally soaring over 70+ musical voices is unlike any other. Maybe it’s something like skydiving, ballroom dancing and crowd-surfing all in one.

Q: Having studied cello when you were young, do you ever find yourself watching cellists play during lyrical breaks in the songs at orchestral concerts?
A: Absolutely; although I try to save that for rehearsals because it’s easy to get lost in observing and miss my cue to come back in. Playing the cello is such a fulfilling experience. You feel the music in your core.

Q: On the impressive “Summer Sessions” EP, your smooth acoustic covers of Coldplay (“Magic”) and Howard Jones (“No One is to Blame”) were especially memorable. What was your goal with the 2015 James Bryan collaboration?
A: That guitar/vocal duo project was truly a reflection of my love for that format - songs in their simplest form: stripped down to their essence. I love acoustic music and I love a great lyric. I love all kinds of music and songwriters. I hope that is not my last project like that.

Q: Last year, you put out a luxurious jazz take on the standard "Moon River." Are there any new recordings planned this year?

A: I’ve been working on a couple projects. I’m hoping to release a tribute to Nancy Wilson soon. The producer of my orchestra project, Kevin Surace, and I should be working on [another one] soon too. The [earliest] new release will likely be early 2020.

Sheryl Crow duets album details

Sheryl Crow’s forthcoming album of collaborations, THREADS, is available for pre-order now ahead of the Aug. 30 release on The Valory Music Co. Unveiling the cover art and full track list today, she premiered “Still The Good Old Days” featuring Joe Walsh.

During a run of European tour dates, she will perform the song on The Graham Norton Show, airing tonight at 10:40P GMT on BBC One. Crow shared, “’Still The Good Old Days’ totally captures what Joe and I believe about getting older…that life is still fun no matter what stage of life you are at, and that living isn’t just for the young.”

Further elaborating on the project, Crow reflected, “I became inspired to record an album of musical experiences with the legacy artists who inspired me to want to be a great songwriter, musician, and producer. It is a celebration with them, and a tribute to them. Just as importantly, I wanted to work with younger artists on this record, who I believe will pick up the torch and continue to light the way for humanity with their stories and their songs for many years to come. Their music inspires me every day.”

Out now: Chely Wright EP 'Revival'

Over the past decade—on projects like 2010’s Lifted off the Ground, produced by Rodney Crowell, and 2016’s I Am the Rain, produced by Joe Henry—singer-songwriter and LGBT activist Chely Wright had used her songwriting as a salve to soothe the emotional turmoil that accompanied her extraordinary journey from Nashville star to introspective storyteller.

Her latest EP Revival is something different. “The fractured state, the fissures that defined me—that was what my records were about, without my even knowing it,” Wright says. “I’m not as broken as I used to be. I can be so happy right now, and I can sing about being happy. Or I can have a lousy day and I can sing about that. Or I can talk about how hard marriage is. All that’s OK.”

The songs were co-produced and co-written by Jeremy Lister and multi-instrumentalist Dustin Ransom. 

Wright explains that they made a point of not letting her veer too close to the tones and themes of her previous music. “Jeremy and Dustin steered me toward narratives that celebrate this idea of, ‘You’re actually the best you’ve ever been as a human.’ That was news to me,” Wright says. “They were able to see, ‘This is a woman who is ready to celebrate where she is at the age of 48. I loved that.’”

On Wright-Lister songs like the duet “Say the Word” and the title track, Wright said she thought "about past relationships I’ve had, and they will never leave me. It’s something my wife, Lauren, and I talk about a lot.

"Those women will be a part of our current relationship, because they helped form who we are. ‘Revival’ is about forgiveness."

“The song also speaks to a hope that I know I’m missing right now,” Wright adds. “I wake up and I’m feeling hopeless about a lot of things in the world and our government, in our public discourse. I like that that song stakes a claim on humanity and healing.”

Wright emerged on the national country-music scene nearly three decades ago. She earned her first major-label deal in 1993; the Academy of Country Music’s Top New Female Vocalist Award in ’95; and her first Top 40 country hit, “Shut Up and Drive,” in ’97. In 2010, Wright released her Random House memoir, Like Me: Confessions of a Heartland Country Singer, and forever altered the social landscape of Nashville. In the end, her identity as both an artist who embodies country music’s core values—a dedicated person of faith and a patriot, Wright was playing for the troops long before most artists considered doing it—and a strong gay woman made her an ideal catalyst for changing hearts and minds.

Currently based in New York City, Wright is now able to convey the entirety of her journey on her terms exclusively. “That’s my view now—the long game,” she says. “As far as touring, I love it more than I ever loved touring before. I have a lot of stories to tell.”
