Metric head to 'Formentera' next month

Toronto rock band Metric released a new song “What Feels Like Eternity” from their forthcoming album, Formentera. Listen/share HERE and watch/share the live performance video HERE.

Their eighth studio album is set for release on July 8 and is available for pre-order/pre-save HERE. Formentera vinyl is available for pre-order in limited edition Natural and Cobalt Blue variants at ilovemetricstore.com.

“What Feels Like Eternity” is the third song to be released from the new album, the first being “All Comes Crashing” which is their fastest record to cross 1 million streams and is garnering support from flagship alternative rock playlists across radio (SiriusXM's Alt Nation) and DSPs (Spotify's Rock This, Apple Music's ALT CTRL, & Amazon Music's Alternative Hits.)

“Doomscroller” - over 10 minutes long. The album is named for an idyllic island near Ibiza off the coast of Spain—a place which, for Metric, only existed in a “dream destinations” travel book sitting on the desk of their recording studio.

“We had been living in our imaginations for a long time, because we couldn’t physically go anywhere else,” explains guitarist and co-producer Jimmy Shaw. “When you listen to the album from beginning to end, you start with this immediate feeling of tension building, of being stuck in a loop, and then there’s this intense release that happens… you’re swept off your feet into the title track ‘Formentera’ and it’s like you escaped.”

Emily Haines continues, “We came to this realization that it wasn’t even about an actual place anymore, it was about creating an escape for yourself in your mind because you’re powerless over so many things.”

The band will be hitting the road on a North American headline tour, The Doomscroller Tour, in August in Victoria, BC.

They recently launched a mobile app, giving fans early access to limited edition vinyl, exclusive content, concert tickets and more, including 7” singles for "All Comes Crashing" and "Doomscroller" within the app for fans to purchase. You can download the app at ilovemetricapp.com.

Metric has partnered with PLUS1 so that $1 per ticket goes to supporting War Child and their work to empower children and families in communities affected by war throughout the world. Tickets for The Doomscroller Tour are on sale now. View the full list of tour dates and get tickets HERE.

Heaven 17 embarks on rare North American tour this fall

Heaven 17 will be coming to North America this fall for their first-ever headlining transatlantic tour celebrating their 40-year career. The acclaimed British duo of Martyn Ware and Glenn Gregory will perform their hits, including “Temptation,” “Let Me Go” and “Hands Up To Heaven,” classic tracks and other highlights.

The 15-date We Don’t Need This Fascist Groove Thang outing launches in September in Pawling, NY and will stop in major cities before wrapping in Seattle in October. See below for full list of North American tour dates. Tickets are on sale now. Visit https://www.heaven17.com/live-dates for more information and to purchase.

“Our first trip to America as Heaven 17 was to New York in 1981; in fact, it was my first-ever trip to the USA and was a truly amazing experience. I can’t remember how on earth this came about, but we were going to play our first-ever live performance at the legendary Studio 54,” shares Gregory. “We have, believe it or not, only ever played the States twice since then – once at a brilliant sold-out gig at The Highline Ballroom in NYC and the other at the Music Tastes Good festival in Long Beach, California, both in 2017. So, it’s certainly way past the time for Heaven 17 to finally come and tour in America and we are on our way! We know we have some amazing fans over there and we’re really excited to, at last, be able to play in front of all of them.”

Taking their name from the Anthony Burgess novel A Clockwork Orange, Heaven 17 grew out of the experimental production outfit the British Electric Foundation, itself an offshoot of the electro-pop group The Human League. In 1981, Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh left The Human League, recruited vocalist Glenn Gregory and Heaven 17 was born. Their critically acclaimed first album Penthouse and Pavement, featuring their debut single “(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang,” followed the same year.

The group’s second album, the platinum-selling The Luxury Gap (1983), featured the single “Temptation” which peaked at #2 on the UK Singles Chart. Subsequent Top 20 singles off the album were “Come Live With Me” and “Crushed By the Wheels of Industry.”

Over in the U.S. during this time, their self-titled Heaven 17 album (1983) was a re-working of Penthouse and Pavement with three songs deleted, replaced by “Who’ll Stop The Rain,” “I’m Your Money,” and “Let Me Go,” the latter of which received high rotation airplay on alternative rock and new wave radio stations, including LA’s KROQ and Long Island, NY’s WLIR, plus frequent MTV exposure.

Heaven 17 spent the rest of the 1980s releasing a few more albums - How Men Are (1984), Pleasure One (1986) and Teddy Bear, Duke & Psycho (1988) - before a hiatus ensued until 1996, when they released Bigger Than America and had their U.S. dance smash single “Hands Up To Heaven.”

After another break, the 2000s saw the releases of Before After (2005) and Naked As Advertised (2008) and Heaven 17’s return to the stage. Now a collective between Ware and Gregory with piano and synth player Flo Sabeva and soul singers Kelly Barnes and Rachel Mosleh part of the live lineup, Heaven 17, who largely refused to play live during the ‘80s, is now performing headlining tours throughout the UK and alongside the likes of La Roux and Squeeze.

The first authorized early Blondie career box set arrives in August

Blondie: Against The Odds 1974-1982, t
he first authorized box set of the legendary NYC rock band, will be released on August 26 via UMe/Numero Group. It is available to pre-order now: https://blondie.lnk.to/AgainstTheOddsPR

See the unboxing of the Super Deluxe Collectors' Edition HERE, and listen to Blondie's previously unreleased recording of "Moonlight Drive," out now.

Remastered from the original analog tapes and cut at Abbey Road Studios, this box set is available on four formats (Super Deluxe Collectors' Edition, Deluxe 4LP, Deluxe 8CD and 3CD editions). Housed in a foil-wrapped carton, Against The Odds includes liner notes by Erin Osmon, track by track commentary from Debbie Harry, Chris Stein, Clem Burke, Jimmy Destri, Nigel Harrison, Frank Infante, and Gary Valentine, essays by producers Mike Chapman, Richard Gottehrer, and Ken Shipley, a 120-page illustrated discography, and period photographs.

The collection includes the first six studio albums recorded for Chrysalis; Blondie, Plastic Letters, Parallel Lines, Eat To The Beat, Autoamerican, The Hunter, and in turn their catalogue of era-defining hits "Heart Of Glass," "Atomic," "Tide Is High," "Sunday Girl," "Rapture," and "Call Me." These six albums have been expanded to include over four dozen demos (including the group's first-ever recording session), alternate versions, and studio outtakes, creating a near-complete document of Blondie's studio sessions prior to their 1982 hiatus.

Debbie Harry said, "It really is a treat to see how far we have come when I listen to these early attempts to capture our ideas on relatively primitive equipment. Fortunately the essence of being in a band in the early 70's held some of the anti-social, counter culture energies of the groups that were the influencers of the 60's. I am excited about this special collection. When I listen to these old tracks, it puts me there like I am a time traveler. As bad as it was sometimes, it was also equally as good. No regrets. More music."

"I am hopeful that this project will provide a glimpse into the 'process' and some of the journey that the songs took from idea to final form," guitarist Chris Stein said. "Some of this stuff is like early sketches; the old tape machines are like primitive notebooks. The trickiest thing for me was always about getting the melodies out of my head into reality and the changes that would happen along the way."

"It is amazing that after all this time, and against the odds, our Blondie archival box set will finally be released. It's been a long time coming and we are all very happy and excited with the final results," drummer Clem Burke added.

"From the moment I walked into Chris Stein's barn and saw a wall of tapes I knew we were on the precipice of something extraordinary," producer Ken Shipley said. "Against The Odds is a treasure chest disguised as a box set."

"Blondie is a group of extraordinary artists," producer Steve Rosenthal said. "Years of searching, months of mixing, mastering and restoration, days of decisions went into this box set to highlight the unique path they travelled - from CBGB's to MSG."

Against The Odds has an unusual beginning; for nearly two decades, the bulk of Blondie's audio and visual archive sat inside in Chris Stein's unassuming barn just outside Woodstock, New York. One hundred reel-to-reel tapes, half a dozen cassettes, a few storage tubs crammed with records, bits of promotional flotsam, flyers, a stray Warhol print, and mirrored dressing room signage from four sold-out January 1980 nights at London's Hammersmith Odeon. All of it lay in wait through twenty humid summers, twenty frigid winters.

Editors return with 'EBM' this fall

Editors' seventh album EBM is scheduled for September 23 through Play It Again Sam. The new album will be the first with new band member Benjamin John Power, aka Blanck Mass, who was announced as a full-time member last month with the album’s first single "Heart Attack."

A second preview is now available in the form of "Karma Climb," with a live video. Listen to the track HERE, and watch the video HERE.

The six piece have also announced a 15 date European tour taking place in October, as well as 7 shows in the UK and Ireland in early 2023.

Power says of the album: “There is a strong physicality to this record. EBM started its life with the intention of connecting with people and filling a very physical space. There is also however an emotional physicality running throughout; An urgency and a sense of panic. An unease. Even in its more tender moments there is a yearning for connection.”

The album title is an acronym of Editors and Blanck Mass but also a knowing reference to Electronic Body Music, the potent sound that originated in the 1980s and which has hugely influenced Editors’ new material, where the synths of bands like Nitzer Ebb, Front 242 and DAF hammer darkly amongst smoke machines, strobe lights and the smell of leather in concert.

Power’s addition to the band meant that, for the first time, the song structures weren’t coming from frontman Tom Smith, with him and further band members Justin Lockey, Elliott Williams, Russell Leetch and Ed Lay receiving files to tinker with and flesh out in the studio when they eventually regrouped. “Ben has certainly been a shot of adrenaline in our creative process,” says Tom. “The songs are so immediate, and in your face.”

Speaking on new single "Karma Climb," Tom continues: "It's about hedonistic escapism, not only from the world generally, but also from what people think of you."

All 6 of Editors’ studio albums over their 17 year career have charted in the UK top 10, with 2 scoring number 1’s, and their debut, The Back Room, being shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. Their latest tour saw them play their biggest UK headline show to date at OVO Arena, Wembley in 2020, signalling their ever-growing audience.

Flogging Molly announces new album; on tour with Interrupters

Celtic punk band Flogging Molly return with their first new album in five years, Anthem (Sept. 9, Rise Records), a collection that finds the Los Angeles-by-way-of-Dublin outfit reunited with Swagger and Drunken Lullabies engineer Steve Albini.

“With this record we went back to the basics in a way that I don’t think we could have done if we hadn’t been playing together for over 20 years,” says singer/guitar player Dave King. “I think going back to Chicago and doing this record with Steve made the experience so fun and I really believe you can hear that on the record. For Flogging Molly, getting together and playing new songs is always the goal—and now we’re just getting excited to start playing these songs live and giving our fans a whole new era of Flogging Molly.”

A second preview of the 11-song collection arrives with the release of “The Croppy Boy ’98,” a track that King describes as “a foot stomping, rollicking ode to traditional Irish music.” The song’s arrival is accompanied by a live video (https://youtu.be/j3WBSfXOHQo) featuring footage from Flogging Molly’s recent St. Patrick’s Day performance and annual festival at the Hollywood Palladium. The band released the irreverent “These Times Have Got Me Drinking/Tripping Up The Stairs” (https://riserecords.lnk.to/TTHGMD) ahead of their March 2022 tour and sold-out Salty Dog Cruise.

As previously mentioned, Flogging Molly and The Interrupters are on a U.S. co-headlining trek with openers Tiger Army and The Skints. Tickets are available via Floggingmolly.com.

Tim Burgess has had a career encompassing three decades as lead singer and frontman of The Charlatans, five solo albums, three memoirs, the foundation of the O Genesis label, and more than 1000 installments of Tim’s Twitter Listening Party. Conceived by Burgess in March 2020 at the dawn of the pandemic era, the online events brought people around the world together through real-time album playbacks via Twitter, featuring stories from bands and fans, rarely seen images, and exclusive insights and anecdotes from the artists who created some of music’s most iconic albums.

The pandemic years also saw Burgess’s own creative muse in full gear, with the new songs emerging on the new double album.

“OK, we all know about double albums, right?,” says Tim Burgess. “Historically, they’ve been thought of as indulgent. But I came to the conclusion that what I was doing was the opposite of that. I wanted to give people everything that I’d done. Every idea was treated as if it was the best thing and had to be treated with extreme care. I wanted to give everything of myself. That was it.”

Burgess brought his burgeoning batch of songs to Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire, Wales, a storied establishment that held powerful memories for him, including the recording of The Charlatans’ 1997 landmark, TELLIN’ STORIES, an experience irreparably tarnished by the death of the keyboard player Rob Collins in a car crash at the bottom of the lane while making that album.

Though Burgess hadn’t properly been back to Rockfield in almost 25 years, he now felt ready to return, this time joined by Daniel O’Sullivan, a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and member of his live band, and keyboard/synth player Thighpaulsandra (Julian Cope, Coil, Spiritualized).

“I fell in love with the world again,” Burgess says. “During COVID, I read a pile of books, got better on guitar. I had new perspective. I wanted to learn how to be Tim Burgess who makes solo records. People have a vision of me as the singer in The Charlatans. That’s not going to change. Then there’s me as the Twitter guy.
