Violent Femmes' second album to get 40th anniversary LP reissue in November

Craft Recordings and Violent Femmes are commemorating 40 years of the band’s sophomore title, Hallowed Ground, with a vinyl reissue. Set for release on November 8 and available for pre-order now, the LP has been mastered from the original stereo tapes.

In addition to the standard vinyl, widely available for the first time in over a decade, Hallowed Ground can also be found in four limited color pressings, including a Green Smoke variant (available at vfemmes.com and craftrecordings.com), Orange Smoke (independent record stores), Azure Blue (Barnes & Noble) and Onyx (Spotify Fans First, available exclusively to followers). To mark this milestone, Violent Femmes are currently on a North America tour (see below).

First released in May of 1984, Hallowed Ground includes contributions from banjo player Tony Trischka on “Country Death Song” and “It’s Gonna Rain,” and saxophonist John Zorn on “Black Girls.”

The album’s lyrics delve into themes of faith, redemption and existential contemplation. This marked a bold departure from the more straightforward pop sound of the band’s debut, which featured beloved teen angst anthems like “Blister in the Sun,” “Add It Up” and “Kiss Off.” The record’s unique lyrical approach and haunting melodies created a deeply introspective and immersive listening experience that intrigued—and initially divided—listeners, including the band members themselves.

In a 2012 interview with the Houston Chronicle, Brian Ritchie offered insight into the album’s creation and its initial reception, reflecting, “To me, it’s more punk to defy your audience than to play what they want to hear. But we lost our audience that way.” Speaking to the fact that both the debut and Hallowed Ground were written while Gano was still in high school, he added, “Ironically, we had the material for both albums. We could’ve put out a double or released Hallowed Ground first and then the debut. We chose to make the first one a pop album and Hallowed Ground a sprawling exploration of American roots music. We’re not considered in the Americana category . . .”

Belarus band Molchat Doma return with new album in September and fall U.S. tour

Belarusian post-punk/synth-pop group Molchat Doma - which netted a prime evening tent slot at Coachella '22 - have unveiled the new single/video, “Belaya Polosa,” off of their new album, Belaya Polosa, out September 6 via Sacred Bones.

In conjunction, they announce a 2025 North American headline tour which will see them play some of their largest venues to date. Tickets on sale now and available here.

Following singles “Son” and “Ty Zhe Ne Znaesh Kto Ya,” the video to the album’s title track was directed by Ambar Navarro and inspired by grainy 1990s MTV music videos and filmmakers such as Ingmar Bergman and Andrei Tarkovsky.

"Written in LA after more than a year of living in a new place, the song captures the interplay of past and present,” the band explains. “It reflects the realization that you're no longer drawn to where you left, yet you don't completely sever ties. It's as if life has been paused. The lyrics explore self-understanding across time, the evolution of your social circle, and an outsider’s view of people from a 'past life’."

Watch the Video for “Belaya Polosa”

“Ty Zhe Ne Znaesh Kto Ya” (meaning “You Don't Know Who I Am”), sung in Russian, communicates vocalist Egor Shkutko’s frustration and pain from navigating a long-distance relationship. “It explores the pain and despair of feeling misunderstood by a loved one and the endless guilt that ensues, even though you don’t realize how you yourself contribute to this pain,” explains Shkutko.

The accompanying video was directed by Maxim Kelly, who comments: “When the band recorded the track, they envisioned a jive dancer, which became the core inspiration for the video. I found jive to be perfectly fitting and intriguingly out of place, making it a compelling choice. I wanted to juxtapose this lively dance with a lonely, post-apocalyptic world to explore themes of isolation and connection.”

In the four years since their last album, Monument, there was so much change in the lives of Shkutko, bassist/synth player Pavel Kozlov, and primary songwriter, producer and arranger Raman Kamahortsau that it was only inevitable to hear a transformation in their music. “The entire album is a prism through which we tried to reflect what has happened to us,” the band says of their new work. Kamahortsau once again handled the production duties.

The band gained a following with earlier albums that sound like third-generation bootlegs of banned recordings from the Eastern Bloc made after a few key entries in the Factory Records catalog were smuggled in from the West. Belaya Polosa trades the basement grime and dirty tape-head sound of their previous work for digital luster and shimmering production values.

Out now: New 'lost' Michael Hutchence songs on 10" vinyl picture disc

Two years after INXS singer
Michael Hutchence's untimely death at age 37, a self-titled solo album was released posthumously in late 1999.

Producer/musician Danny Saber played guitar and bass on it, did programming and co-produced with Hutchence and Andy Gill from Gang of Four. Bono and The Clash's Joe Strummer were among the studio guests.

“Michael first contacted me in 1995 soon after the release of my album It’s Great When You’re Straight,” recalls Saber, referring to the UK #1 album by his band Black Grape with Happy Mondays’ Shaun Ryder. “Michael was a huge fan of my record and wanted to find the right sound for a solo record, a sound that would galvanize all the success he had with INXS and allow him to establish himself as a solo artist and spread his creative wings outside the confines of being the frontman of one of the most successful bands in the world.”

Working closely with Hutchence, the two became friends and creative partners. “Over the next two years, we became very close collaborators, and the period we worked together was one of the best times of my life,” Saber remembers. “I had just broken through with a #1 record and having Michael as a ‘big brother’ to help me navigate this was so important to me.”

Except that wasn't the end of Saber's music partnership with Hutchence. In 2006, a bunch of unreleased demos and song ideas were discovered in a London tape locker. Now two finished songs finally see the light of day.

A limited edition 10" black vinyl picture disc, released on Friday, features “One Way” and the B-side "Save My Life."

Buy it here: www.bosssonics.com/product-page/mkhmusic. A CD single and CD/LP bundle will be available in September.

“’One Way’ is the culmination of nearly two decades of work,” says Saber. “One of the fundamental reasons for releasing this music is to allow the fans to hear Michael’s voice on something new and fresh, offering a glimpse into what might have been, and, in turn, reawakening millions of people who may have simply forgotten about him.”

“I set about reviewing the recordings to find out if there was enough of a quality for some sort of release,” says Saber. Meanwhile, a documentary about Hutchence’s life was released in Australia and New Zealand, titled The Last Rockstar (2017), which included some snippets of these unfinished tracks.

“I have been working towards bringing this music to the public for over 20 years,” he adds. “While some portions of these songs were featured in the documentary, the fully mastered versions had never been released.”

Taking one of the a capella vocal recordings that Hutchence left, Saber faithfully fleshed out and fashioned the track into “One Way,” ensuring it retained the elevated refinement that Hutchence demanded in life. “Michael and INXS set a really high standard for their music,” he explains. “I’ve said many times that you would be hard-pressed to find a crappy INXS song… a certain level of excellence had to be maintained.”

A hard-charging rocker with seductive vocals, "One Way" finds Hutchence repeating the phrase "kick it around," as edgy guitars and percolating programming surround him. It sounds fresh. The more dramatic, midtempo "Save My Life" contains acoustic guitar, piano and a treated vocal that vaguely recalls "Never Tear Us Apart."

“One of the best things for me personally is that through this journey, I have come to a better understanding of what happened to Michael and why,” Saber sums up, referring to the emotional and tragic toll that fame and its excesses had on Hutchence. “I want to share that perspective as I really feel Michael’s story has so much relevance and value on so many levels, and along the way, hopefully we can shift the focus to how he lived and not how he died. Michael deserves to take his place in the pantheon of great frontmen and finally get the recognition he and the band deserve.”

INXS sold over 50 million albums worldwide. From 1982-1997, the Aussie band notched multiple top 40 hits on the US pop, rock and alt-rock radio charts including "New Sensation," "Never Tear Us Apart," "The One Thing," "What You Need," "Devil Inside," "Don't Change," "Suicide Blonde," "Bitter Tears" and more. Six of its albums were certified gold or platinum in America.

Thomas Rhett’s seventh studio album ABOUT A WOMAN set for release August 23 via The Valory Music Co. It was p

“Don’t Wanna Dance” is built around an interpolation of the Whitney Houston hit “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me).”

Sugarland is back in business

Sugarland shares new music with the release of their new EP There Goes The Neighborhood, out now via Big Machine Records. Listen HERE

“I’m so excited to be out on the road again with Jennifer [Nettles] and with our dear friends Little Big Town. If that isn’t enough to get you screaming, we’re also putting out new music,” says Sugarland’s Kristian Bush.

“For this EP, we decided to reach out to some of the best songwriters in Nashville and ask them to send us their best songs. Typically, we write or co-write most of our songs, but with a town full of the world’s best creators, why not experiment and see what we could find. Can’t wait to play these new ones loud and hear everyone sing along.”

“In a world that is increasingly becoming more digitally fabricated and fractured, it’s nice to play with the timeless wisdom of how ‘newer doesn’t always mean better’ throughout the new EP, and it’s always exciting to celebrate some new Sugarland music,” adds Nettles.

On Monday, August 12, Sugarland will celebrate their new music in New York City with a debut performance of “There Goes The Neighborhood” while headlining TODAY’s Summer Concert series alongside tourmates and dear friends Little Big Town.

'They’ll embark on the 2024 TAKE ME HOME TOUR (named for Little Big Town and Sugarland’s cover/duet) this fall for select dates on the East Coast and Midwest. For a full list of tour date, visit SugarlandMusic.com.

Luke Bryan news

Luke Bryan is set to release his eighth studio album on September 27. Mind Of A Country Boy. was produced by Jeff and Jody Stevens and is available for Pre-Order now. New single "Closing Time In California” is available NOW across all digital platforms.

Four years have passed since Luke’s last studio release. "I've been able to take my time and really compile songs for this album," Luke said. "If it's a song that I cut two or three years ago, and I still love it, and it still sounds fresh, then I feel like it'll stand the test of time."

"I think this album, as I've tried to do with all my albums, just has a little bit of everything. I do some things different vocally on this one that I've not done before. It's about each song having its place and having its meaning. It's trying not to be overly redundant with songs. I think that's why I've been blessed to have a long career and what I feel like this album's going to do."

Over his career Luke has established a legacy of highly successful concert events like “Spring Break” concerts that gathered more than 200,000 fans on Florida beaches, to his 15 years of Farm Tour and the Mexico destination concert experience “Crash My Playa” that will celebrate its ten-year anniversary when it returns next January. Not to mention the more than 14 million fans who have flocked to his headline tours.

"I'm still having a lot of fun in my concerts, and it's still a big ole party. But I think as you grow older and mature, subject matters change and things that you can sing about change. But the love of trying to find the right song and a song that moves people is still at the forefront of what I want to do as an artist."

Luke’s current single “Love You, Miss You, Mean It” has climbed the country charts. Meanwhile, Crash My Playa 2025 is celebrating its 10th anniversary January 15-18, 2025 at the luxurious Moon Palace Cancún, a AAA Four Diamond Awarded resort. ACM-nominated Crash My Playa, has delivered sold-out concert vacations with country’s biggest stars for a decade, and next year promises to be the most spectacular yet.
