Calum Scott's 'Bridges' album set for June

“Heaven” is the new single from multi-platinum-selling singer/songwriter Calum Scott — listen HERE. His sophomore album Bridges will arrive on June 17. Soon after the release, the U.K.-based artist will embark on a headlining summer tour of North America — see below for the full list of tour dates and venues.

About “Heaven,” he says, “As songwriters, we’re always searching for new ways of saying ‘I miss you’ or ‘I love you’ or ‘I want you back,’” says Calum, who co-wrote “Heaven” with Hayley Warner (an Australian singer/songwriter who’s also penned songs for artists like Katy Perry and Tori Kelly). “‘The concept of ‘Heaven’ is the love between two people being so powerful that it is far superior to anything else, any other form of paradise that could be offered. I loved the idea of putting the power into the relationship.”

“Heaven” features piano and strings. “It felt important to really push my vocal range on a song like this, so by the first chorus I’m already up in the rafters,” he says. “But if you’re talking about something so passionate, it should be delivered in a very passionate way.”

The follow-up to Calum’s 2018 full-length debut Only Human — an acclaimed effort that hit No. 1 on the iTunes album chart in 21 countries, in addition to selling more than 3.6 million in adjusted album sales and garnering over 7.5 billion combined streams — Bridges will also feature the previously released singles If You Ever Change Your Mind , Rise (whose video features a performance from British actor Georgia Hirst), and “Biblical” (a ballad Calum later followed with an American Sign Language version made in collaboration with the Tony Award®-winning Deaf West Theatre). Fans can pre-order the album now, HERE.

Fresh off his recent run as support for Irish rock band The Script (which included a stop at the legendary Radio City Music Hall in New York City), Calum has just announced his forthcoming headlining tour of North America. Out now: 'Utopia I,' the new EP from St. Lucia

Led by husband-and-wife duo South Africa-born Jean-Philip Grobler and Germany-born Patti Beranek, St. Lucia today released the new EP Utopia I. It is
their first new music in four years.

"In a way, this is my rebellion against the darkness of the world," states Jean-Philip. "From the beginning, the name St. Lucia came from me making escapist music. In South Africa, there's a place called St. Lucia, and it's similar to the island in the Caribbean because it's where you escape. It's utopia. There are many ideas of utopia, whether it means virus-free or a virtual tech utopia. It's easy to feel depressed these days, so I'm trying to bring something joyous to the world. I was sick of seeing stuff on the Internet, and I just wanted to feel good. That's what being human is about. We have to feel alive, no matter what is happening around us."

Patti adds, "I feel really proud of the EP. I think there is purity in it that you can't describe. You just have to listen and feel it. I think that this comes from having another child, being parents, and being thrown into a weird time in our lives. It unleashes things, and I think we did a good job capturing that."

To support today's EP release, the group shares the single, "The Golden Age." "'The Golden Age' is always accessible to you," says Jean-Philip. "You can blame social media or politics. At the end of the day, we can all somehow find stillness within."

Journey band news

Journey has released a new single, “You Got The Best Of Me,” off their forthcoming studio album, Freedom - due out July 8 via BMG - available for pre-order HERE.

“I wanted kind of a punky rendition of ‘Any Way You Want It’”, says the group’s founding member, guitarist, songwriter, and producer Neal Schon about the single. “I usually don't go in saying I'm going to look for something like that, but then it just came to me, like “Wheel in the Sky” did years ago. It just kind of flew out of my mouth.”

Freedom will be the first album of new material to be released in eleven years, since 2011’s Eclipse, and in addition to longtime keyboard player and primary lyricist Jonathan Cain and vocalist Arnel Pineda, one more member was recruited for the upcoming album — bassist extraordinaire Randy Jackson, who had played on Journey’s 1986 album Raised on Radio.

Bruce Hornsby enlists Haim, Vampire Weekend members for next album

Award-winning pianist, singer and songwriter Bruce Hornsby debuted a reimagining of Chuck Berry’s “Too Much Monkey Business” alongside an accompanying video.

“‘Too Much Monkey Business’ is a first for me, a cover song on a studio record. Leon Russell and I arranged this Chuck Berry song years ago and I wanted to revisit what we did and give it an update,” recalls Hornsby. Listen to/share it HERE and watch/share the video HERE.

It is the latest song to be revealed from Hornsby’s upcoming studio album, ’Flicted, which is set for release on May 27 via his own Zappo Productions/Thirty Tigers. Most recently, Hornsby premiered the album’s lead single “Sidelines,” featuring a duet with Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend and Blake Mills on guitar throughout. Listen to/share it HERE and watch/share the video HERE.

‘Flicted completes a trilogy of song collections (Absolute Zero and Non-Secure Connection) based on film “cues” Hornsby composed for writer and director Spike Lee. This unique approach enables him to build upon and explore new stylistic techniques while collaborating with a wide variety of talented artists. On ‘Flicted, Hornsby’s goal was to make a more upbeat record overall, speaking on COVID-19 using the world of science as a recurring influence.
“The album title ‘Flicted relates to this strange time in which we live, when the world is basically, well, ‘flicted,” notes Hornsby.

Co-produced by Hornsby and Tony Berg, the 12-track album features additional production work from Ariel Rechtshaid and Wayne Pooley. ‘Flicted also features a duet with Danielle Haim on the pandemic shut-down era piece “Days Ahead” as well as further contributions from Rob Moose who provided several arrangements and performances individually and as a member of yMusic.

In addition, Hornsby and his band the Noisemakers will embark on an extensive run of 2022 tour dates. Current tour routing can be found below.

Based out of Williamsburg, VA, Hornsby first rose to national prominence with The Way It Is, his 1986 Grammy-winning debut album with The Range. The title track became the most-played song on American radio in 1987 while Tupac Shakur’s timeless song “Changes” builds on “The Way It Is” and set the stage for many subsequent versions of the track, including Polo G’s recent single “Wishing For A Hero.” In 1991 Hornsby collaborated with Bonnie Raitt, playing on her iconic hit “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Additionally, Hornsby was a part-time member of the Grateful Dead from September 1990 to March 1992, performing over 100 concerts in America and Europe. In 2019, Hornsby co-wrote “U (Man Like)” with Justin Vernon for the latest Bon Iver album i,i. Hornsby has also written six full film scores for Spike Lee, including his recent Netflix series “She’s Gotta Have It,” and contributed music to five others, including 2021’s NYC Epicenters 9/11→2021½.

The 13-time Grammy nominee has solidified his status as a highly sought-after collaborator. Hornsby’s own 23 albums have sold over 11 million copies worldwide, and he has appeared on over 100 records including releases with Bob Dylan, Don Henley, the Grateful Dead, Stevie Nicks, Ricky Skaggs, Bob Seger, Chaka Khan, Brandon Flowers, Bonnie Raitt, Sting, Mavis Staples, Willie Nelson and more.

Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival 2022 - Weekend 2 review

Harry Styles had just started his headlining set at the second weekend of Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival last Friday in Indio, Calif. when he encouraged the massive audience to “feel free to be whoever it is you wanna be.”

The British singer, a staunch ally of the LGBTQ+ community who routinely wraps himself in Pride flags tossed onstage, was likely giving those particular fans watching a nod of approval. But he also could have been referring to anyone else.

Coachella is an event where people let their freak flags fly. A quick walk around the Empire Polo grounds this past weekend often resulted in the sight of people clad in attire that was silly, outrageous, or nonexistent. Celebrities and social media influencers tend to flock to Weekend 1, so the encore weekend is more about the music than being seen. Indeed, several artists remarked during their sets about how the atmosphere seemed better the second time around.

That includes the notoriously hot desert climate. The Friday afternoon temperature was more comfortable than it had been in several years, making the navigation between multiple stages easier – at least until all of the 125,000 ticketholders finally arrived.

Nearly 75 percent of the Coachella bill carried over from the originally scheduled 2020 edition which was postponed a few times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pop, K-Pop, EDM, rap, hip-hop and R&B dominated the lineup.

All-genre LGBTQ+ performers were well-represented by MIKA, Phoebe Bridgers, Japanese Breakfast, Orville Peck, girl in red, Pabllo Vittar (the first drag queen at Coachella), Omar Apollo (a tongue-in-cheek billboard advertising his appearance on the 10 Freeway leading to the festival read “Heterosexuality Can Be Cured!”) and others.

Rock music and related subgenres were less prominent at the festival, but could still be found among the 150+ acts. Below are some highlights.

Former One Direction front man Harry Styles is an international pop star, but there are plenty of classic rock elements peppered amid his self-titled debut album and 2019’s Fine Line. During a thoroughly enjoyable set, Styles did a large chunk of the latter, plus three promising new tunes from the upcoming Harry’s House release due in May). There was a merch tent exclusively devoted to Styles on Friday and Eilish on Saturday.

Styles kicked things off by racing down a circular row of stairs for “As it Was,” the peppy current record-breaking No. 1 single on Billboard’s Hot 100. “Adore You” had a revamped arrangement and prominent guitar solo. Then the singer strapped on an electric himself for the insanely catchy “Golden.” Slinky come hither song “Woman” was an early standout. The usually folky “Canyon Moon” boasted a beefier arrangement. Lizzo made a guest appearance, and the pair giddily sang a cover of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” and the 1D hit “What Makes You Beautiful” together. Both were decked out in feathered red and pink Gucci coats.

Phoebe Bridgers
drew a large crowd to the Outdoor Theatre for an enchanting evening performance. Arriving onstage to the heavy sound of Disturbed’s “Down with the Sickness,” the Southern California native and her band opened with the soothing Aimee Mann-styled “Motion Sickness” off 2017’s Stranger in the Alps. Watching Bridgers do best known track “Kyoto,” which was written about her father, and colored by soaring trumpet work, was like breathing fresh mountain air. The breathy, acoustic-based “Scott Street,” described as “a love song about L.A.,” was enrapturing.

An odd moment happened amid the quietly wrenching “Moon Song.” When Bridgers got to the lyric about Eric Clapton: “We hate ‘Tears in Heaven’/But it’s sad that his baby died,” some concertgoers around me cheered (the reaction was possibly related to Eric Clapton’s anti-COVID vaccination mandates and lockdown songs in 2020-21 with and without Van Morrison). Adding to the cozy atmosphere were beautiful images of children’s pop-up books and other ephemera on the backdrop. Later, fellow Coachella artist Arlo Parks reprised her guest appearance from Weekend 1, adding backup vocals to “Graceland Too” and explosive closer “I Know the End.” It was a rare, if welcome, repeat surprise appearance.

Pop/rock band The Marias incorporates elements of Latin, jazz, psych and lounge music into its eclectic sound. The sextet drew an overflow crowd to the Gobi Tent. Lead singer Maria Zardoya sometimes brought to mind Sade with her delivery. Concertgoers were treated to an enthralling set including "Calling You Back," "Just a Feeling" and "Little by Little" from last year's Cinema album.

Formed in 1990 by former members of shoegaze progenitor Spacemen 3, Spiritualized was among just a few veteran alternative rock acts on the Coachella bill. Enigmatic leader Jason Pierce (aka J. Spaceman) sang and played electric guitar while seated and he used a sheet music stand. Strobe lights and a mighty wash of sound signaled “Come Together” (off 1997’s much-loved Ladies and Gentlemen We are Floating in Space) to start Friday’s hypnotic Sonora tent set. Pierce’s snarling vocal delivery, swirling guitars, horns, handclaps, and robust backing vocals made for a beautiful noise.

The hazy “Shine a Light” (from 1992 debut Lazer Guided Melodies) slowly unfolded over the course of 7 minutes with saxophone bleats before ending in a dirty maelstrom of guitar feedback. Selections from the new album Everything Was Beautiful - such as the upbeat, horn-driven “Best Thing You Never Had” and tender “Let it Bleed” (inspired by Iggy Pop) - were equally strong.

MIKA held court on the Coachella Stage like he owned the place. The Lebanese-British singer's fun pop music was a pure sugar rush. Colorful backdrop graphics patterned after prior album covers were a cool touch. He first emerged in a powder blue suit and stood atop a piano to open the strong UK hit-laden set with a stripped down “Lollipop.” MIKA's jacket quickly gave way to a sheer hearts and flowers shirt, a crown and finally, a cape. He gleefully danced around and gave that Bee Gees-styled helium falsetto a real workout during “Relax (Take it Easy),” the galloping “Love Today,” disco-fied positivity of “Big Girl (You are Beautiful)” and 1970s glam pop empowerment anthem “We Are Golden.”

Earlier this month, The Regrettes put out solid third album Further Joy. The L.A. band’s Gobi tent performance had plenty of candy-coated moments, albeit mixed with lyrical doses of reality. Their blend of punk and new wave sounds, plus 1960s girl group sensibilities often brought The Go-Go’s to mind. Singer/guitarist Lydia Night asked fans to start a mosh pit; some of them gamely responded. Standouts included majestic Chvrches-leaning set opener “Anxieties (Out of Time),” the frantic older tune “California Friends,” which name checks Madonna and features gang vocals, as well as the acoustic guitar based “Monday,” where Night sings about getting out of L.A.

Lawrence
is a New York City soul/pop group led by siblings Clyde and Gracie Lawrence. It delivered one of the liveliest performances witnessed here. Clyde brought to mind Gavin DeGraw with his breezy manner as he sang lead and played keyboards on a snappy “Casualty” (from 2021’s Hotel TV).

The three-man horn section, clad in matching jerseys, went to town during sprightly latest single “Don’t Lose Sight” before venturing into the crowd for punchy older tune “Do You Wanna Do Nothing with Me?” Lawrence put its own joyful spin on “Get Busy” (a 2003 chart-topper by Jamaican rapper Sean Paul) and TV theme songs (“Seinfeld,” “Hey Arnold!”).

Cathedral City’s Giselle Woo & the Night Owls, among only a handful of local acts on the festival bill, drew a good crowd (including some family members) to the Sonora. Fiery blues rocker “What I Want” from impressive new album Everything and the older harmonica-laced stomper “Coachella Gold” (where Woo sings about driving down the 10 Freeway) were standouts. Christian Collin deftly ripped through several sizzling guitar solos on various songs sung in English and Spanish.

Before the Coachella gates opened on Saturday, three young women could be heard strategizing about how to get the best viewing spot for Billie Eilish’s headline appearance. They were apparently planning on staying in one place for 11 hours. Talk about devoted fans.

Initially skeptical, this writer was won over after witnessing the Grammy and Oscar-winning alternative rock/pop vocalist’s powerful main stage set. At various points, she prowled the main stage like a woman possessed, jumped around, dramatically sang while kneeling on the catwalk, paid attention to a fan that needed medical attention and implored her followers in attendance, “Do not judge anyone.”

Standouts included a batch of songs where Eilish got to show off the more mature, lush side to her voice, such as gorgeous piano-based “idon’twannabeyouanymore,” “Billie Bossa Nova” and “Lovely,” which definitely lived up to its title (the duet with Khalid, a surprise guest on Weekend 1, now has 1.7 billion Spotify streams). Then there were the acoustic versions of “I Love You” and “Your Power.” Hayley Williams of Paramore turned up to do a stripped-down version of that band’s “Misery Business” and later rejoined the show for Eilish’s closer, “Happier Than Ever.”

Danny Elfman said he was pleased to be “back from hibernation after 27 years,” at the conclusion of a riveting hourlong, career-spanning set on the Outdoor Theatre. Elfman put on quite the sonic extravaganza. He was backed by 50 (!) musicians, including a band comprising guitarist Wes Borland of Limp Bizkit, Sting/Vandals drummer Josh Freese, conductor/guitarist/former Oingo Boingo bandmate Steve Bartek, a choir and orchestra.

Rachel Polack/Courtesy of Coachella
There were some dark tunes from 2021’s Big Mess (a menacing “Sorry,” “Happy,” “Love in the Time of COVID”), with weird-bordering-on-disturbing graphics on the screens. Concertgoers cheered loudly whenever excerpts from Elfman’s film and TV scores (Edward Scissorhands, Alice in Wonderland, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, The Simpsons, Batman, The Nightmare Before Christmas) were performed and corresponding clips or animation bits were projected.

Old schoolers in attendance totally reveled in hearing seven classics by Elfman’s old alt-rock band Oingo Boingo. He was still able to sing “Nothing to Fear (But Fear Itself),” “Just Another Day,” “Only a Lad” and “Dead Man’s Party” (Bartek moved to the stage front) with demented authority.

Wallows graduated from a Coachella 2019 tent stage to the large Outdoor Theatre. The bump in status served the band well last Saturday. The surrounding area was totally packed with concertgoers and the L.A. alt-pop trio (expanded to a six-piece in concert) pulled off a performance so self-assured that it wouldn’t be surprising to see them on the main stage in a few years.

Selections from the new album Tell Me That It’s Over, such as the effervescent, harmonica-laced title track and summery “Marvelous” (imagine an edgier version of ‘80s band Haircut 100) were elevated by lead singer Dylan Minnette’s spirited delivery. The same held true for selections off 2019’s Nothing Happens: the wonderous “Treacherous Doctor,” a Weezer-leaning “Scrawny” and billowy hit duet with Clairo, “Are You Bored Yet?” Minnette and co-singer/guitarist Braeden Lemasters each said how honored they were to be playing the event again after attending as fans for a decade. During “OK,” Minnette even connected with fans near the front of the stage.

Over in the Mojave Tent, Holly Humberstone did an emotionally resonant set before a medium-sized crowd. The English singer-songwriter has collaborated with The 1975’s Matt Healy, recently won a Brit Award and will be touring with Olivia Rodrigo and Girl in Red soon. Onstage at Coachella, Humberstone created all her own music solo with an electric guitar and keyboard, sometimes looping sounds and programmed beats. “Sleep Tight,” the sensitive vocals of “Deep End” (with lyrics about her sister’s battle with mental health issues) and new single “London is Lonely” were most revealing.

Nilüfer Yanya
(pictured left) and her three-piece band casted a hypnotic spell over the Sonora Tent crowd with alt-rock music that was sometimes reminiscent of mid-1990s era PJ Harvey. Playing fuzztone electric guitar, the English singer/guitarist of Turkish descent opened with the sax-tinged “Midnight Sun.” Other broodingly intense songs from the edgy new album Painless, such as “Belong with You,” “Stabilise” and “L/R” were equally compelling.

French DJ Madeon (real name: Hugo Leclercq), a rare EDM artist who actually sings. The crowd danced up a storm to "All My Friends," "Pay No Mind" and "Love You Back" with eye-popping graphics. Alas, much to this writer's dismay, he had no guest vocal spots.

Yard Act, a British post-punk band from Leeds, jolted early arrivals to the Sonora Tent awake with a sound that draws reference points from Gang of Four, The Fall and Franz Ferdinand. James Smith talk-sang his way through the tunes as Sam Shjipstone ripped off shards of guitar. The title track from excellent new album The Overload, as well as "Payday," "Pour Another" and standout "Rich" left quite an indelible impression.

Christine McVie's 'Songbird' collection drops in June

I'm surprised this doesn't include either of the hit singles from the 1984 eponymous album. Regardless, it should be interesting to hear...

SONGBIRD - A SOLO COLLECTION is the first ever compilation from Rock & Roll Hall of Famer
Christine McVie. It highlights songs from her solo career.

McVie was not only the songwriter and vocalist for many of Fleetwood Mac’s biggest hits (“Don’t Stop,” “Everywhere,” and “Little Lies”), but she also released some solo albums during her Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame career. Rhino puts those recordings center stage.

SONGBIRD, out June 24, features songs that were remastered by producer Glyn Johns, who worked closely with McVie on the project. It includes a selection of songs from two of her solo albums – 1984’s CHRISTINE MCVIE and 2004’s IN THE MEANTIME – plus two previously unreleased studio recordings including “Slowdown,” which was originally written for the 1985 film American Flyers.

Another song that has never been released is “All You Gotta Do,” a duet that Christine recorded with George Hawkins while making IN THE MEANTIME. The track was never finished and Johns added Ricky Peterson on Hammond and Ethan Johns on drums and guitar.

Another unreleased song is a new orchestral version of "Songbird" from Fleetwood Mac’s RUMOURS album, which has become one of McVie’s signature tracks. The new version pairs McVie’s vocals from the original recording with a new string arrangement by six-time Grammy Award winning composer and arranger Vince Mendoza.

SONGBIRD goes back to 1984 for a selection of tracks from Christine McVie, which find McVie joined by several legendary musicians. “The Challenge” includes backing vocals by her Fleetwood Mac bandmate Lindsey Buckingham and lead guitar by Eric Clapton. “Ask Anybody” is a song McVie co-wrote with Steve Winwood, who also adds backing vocals and piano to the track.

Most of SONGBIRD is taken from 2004’s IN THE MEANTIME. Highlights include the Top 40 AC hit, “Friend” and “Sweet Revenge,” one of several songs on the record that she co-wrote with her nephew Dan Perfect, who also helped produce the album.

The liner notes that accompany SONGBIRD find McVie paired with acclaimed English radio DJ and broadcaster Johnnie Walker for a conversation that touches on every song from the collection.

Track listing:

1. Friend
2. Sweet Revenge
3. The Challenge
4. Northern Star
5. Ask Anybody
6. Slow Down [Previously Unreleased]
7. Easy Come, Easy Go
8. Giving It Back

The Interrupters go 'In The Wild' this August

The Interrupters will release their fourth studio album, In The Wild, on August 5 via Hellcat/Epitaph Records. The first single, “In the Mirror” can be heard HERE.

“I fell into so many self-destructive patterns trying to come to terms with my childhood,” singer Aimee Interrupter says of the inspiration for the song. “I spent so long trying to run from the pain. No matter how far I ran, there I was…. I realized I needed to make peace with who I saw in the mirror.”

Kevin Kerslake – director of such films as Nirvana: Live! Tonight! Sold Out! and The Ramones: We’re Outta Here! – helmed the official video for “In The Mirror.” He captures the band in an array of fractured reflections, inspired by classic television (the “Mirror Image” episode of The Twilight Zone), film (Orson Welles’ Lady From Shanghai), videos (Talking Heads’ “Once In A Lifetime” and The Police’s “Every Breath You Take”) and even the work of Old Hollywood glamour photographer George Hurrell. View HERE.

After supporting Green Day, Weezer, and Fall Out Boy on the Hella Mega Tour, one of the biggest rock tours of 2021, The Interrupters will return to the road this summer with Flogging Molly. The co-headline run will kick off at TCU Amphitheater at White River State Park in Indianapolis on June 7 and include a June 30 show at Pier 17 in New York City. Tiger Army and The Skints will support on all dates. See below for itinerary. Tickets are available here.

During the COVID lockdown, Aimee Interrupter, partner and guitarist Kevin Bivona, and his younger twin brothers, Jesse (drums) and Justin (bass), built a home studio in their garage. In this cocoon-like environment, Aimee found the strength to confront the past and together the bandmates created their most personal album yet. Guests include Tim Armstrong, Rhoda Dakar, Hepcat, and The Skints. The band penned the album’s 14 songs together and Kevin Bivona produced. See below for track listing.

“This album takes you on a journey throughout Aimee’s life and every song is a deep delve. We recorded almost the entire record in our home studio during the lockdown which as we all know was a turbulent time for everyone. The making of the record allowed us to have purpose and to rid our closets of all the skeletons lurking. Humbled and honored to have features from Tim Armstrong, Rhoda Dakar, Alex & Greg from Hepcat, and The Skints," said the band in a statement.

Fans who pre-order In The Wild in digital format will instantly receive “In The Mirror.” The album will also be released on vinyl. In The Wild is the follow-up to 2018’s Fight the Good Fight, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart. The album contained the smash hit “She’s Kerosene,” which entered the top five of Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart and has amassed over 50 million combined global streams to date, and “Broken World,” which was recently tapped for Epitaph’s Ukraine Benefit Compilation.

Franky Perez ponder 'Crossing the Great Divide' in June

Franky Perez will release his fifth solo album Crossing the Great Divide, June 24 on Black Sea Music—pre-save/pre-order the album HERE. The track “The Great Divide,” alongside an accompanying video, are out now, featuring cellist Eicca Toppinen of Apocalyptica and drummer Matt Chamberlain (Bob Dylan, Brandi Carlile, Bruce Springsteen)—listen/watch/share HERE.

About Crossing the Great Divide, Perez remarks, “Every artist says, 'This is my greatest album,' but this truly was probably the best experience that I've had making an album, and the most honest,” says Perez.

Many of the songs were awakened by his cross-country motorcycle ride captured in a new documentary film. The documentary charts Perez’s musical travels during lockdown, showing his frequent stops along the way to play for healthcare workers and patients, and his meetings with fellow musicians and friends including ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons, country singer Randy Travis and comedian Bill Burr.

“This project is bigger than myself, and everyone that watches it is getting that,” says Perez. “Even though it was shot during the height of the pandemic, it turned into something else. It's a documentary about humanity and hope, and Covid is just a thread of the story.”

The new record runs the gamut of Perez’s many talents as songwriter and multi-instrumentalist and he played almost everything. “That's something I'm really proud of,” he says. “I probably performed about 90% of the instrumentation on the album and I recorded and engineered it myself. If I felt that I couldn't get a certain feel, then I reached out to that particular player to get it.”

Perez has worked with artists ranging from Billy Gibbons and Joe Cocker to Darius Rucker and Ringo Starr and has also performed with Steven Tyler, Cody Jinks, Chris Janson and Slash among many others.

Along the way, Perez has released four critically acclaimed solo albums and his music was featured on six seasons of Sons of Anarchy. He has performed at major events, charities and music festivals all over the world. He rejoins Finnish symphonic metal band Apocalyptica on tour as the band’s lead singer this spring, with dates across the U.S. and Canada.

Dramarama records new version of 1990s hit "What Are We Gonna Do?" for Earth Day 2022

Dramarama’s “What Are We Gonna Do?” will be released by Rhino/WMG on Earth Day, Friday, April 22, 2022, with songwriting royalties being donated to Pure Earth.

Back in April, 1990, the LA-via-New Jersey alt-rock band performed at a large concert celebrating the 20th anniversary of Earth Day held at San Francisco’s Crissy Field. The enormous amount of trash left behind by the audience was appalling; the debris and disregard for the message of the event confounded Dramarama founder/singer/songwriter, John Easdale.

So he wrote “What Are We Gonna Do?” What doesn’t he do? He doesn’t check the calendar. And sadly, over the years, that lapse of calling Earth Day "April 21" has gotten more attention than the message.

With the hope of re-focusing attention on the message, the band decided to celebrate with two new versions of what’s come to be known as “The Earth Day Song” among fans 30 years after the original recording reached Top 10 on Billboard’s Modern Rock chart.

Utilizing the original tracks, Easdale has slightly revised the lyrics, and also created a new “Stripped Mix” that features Peter Wood’s acoustic guitar and shines a spotlight on the exquisite Hammond and piano of Benmont Tench (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers). Songwriting royalties from these new versions will be donated to Pure Earth.

The band's most recent album is 2020's critically-acclaimed Color TV.

Dramarama is John Easdale (vocals/guitar), Mark Englert (guitar), Peter Wood (guitar), Mike Davis (bass) and Tony Snow (drums).

Josh Rouse is 'Going Places' in July

Singer/songwriter Josh Rouse's new album Going Places, is scheduled for release on July 29 via Yep Roc Records. The debut single is “Hollow Moon” - listen via YouTube HERE. Pre-order Going Places HERE.

“‘Hollow Moon’ started as a guitar riff on my voice memo with what sounded like me mumbling ‘hollow moon’ over and over,” says Rouse. “Through the course of several decades, I've learned it's best to stick to the original mumble whether it has meaning or not. I came up with some lonely, only-child verses and sent them to Matt Costa to lay some of his Kinksish harmonies. Very catchy. Perhaps a hit.”

Inspired by a desire to perform live during a time when that was virtually impossible to do, Josh Rouse wrote the songs for Going Places over the last two years while hunkered down with his family in Spain. He recorded and produced the album in his home studio, engaging his longtime production partner Brad Jones to assist with mixing.

Where 2018’s Love in the Modern Age saw Rouse use keyboard-based retro-new wave music, Going Places has classic guitar melodies, organ and horns, layers of backing vocals and used his Spanish band for a relaxed set of songs.

Rouse explains, “A couple of friends of mine – my Spanish band – bought a small venue, sort of like a 1950’s American bar. I said, ‘Let’s get together and play some songs in the bar - something that feels good in a smaller room. Just toe-tappers.’” He continues, “A year later, after things opened up a bit , I said ‘Why don’t we just go in and I’ll produce it, and let’s just record these songs and see what happens? And that’s what the Going Places record is - stuff that just felt good to play to a live audience.”
