Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music to get solo career-spanning box set in October

Bryan Ferry has announced 'Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023.' The 81-track collection is the first career-spanning release to fully explore the Roxy Music co-founder's work as a solo artist, spanning a period of over 50 years of music and 16 solo albums. The collection is due for release on Oct. 25 via BMG.

This collection brings together, for the first time, Ferry’s recorded output with Island Records, Polydor, Virgin, E.G. Records and BMG, and features two brand new recordings. 

The box set will be released in multiple formats including a 5CD deluxe box set featuring 81 songs, accompanied by a 100-page hardback book containing extensive new liner notes, rare and unseen photographs and imagery. A 2LP gatefold edition presents The Best Of Bryan Ferry, containing 20 songs pressed to black vinyl with variants including a green/blue vinyl pressing and a clear vinyl pressing. A 1CD version will also feature the same 20 songs and a booklet containing liner notes and photographs. An 81-track edition of the album will be released digitally, including a brand-new song titled ‘Star.’ Bryan Ferry’s first new music release in over a decade.

The 5CD deluxe box set is curated across five stages, with each disc devoted to a different aspect of Bryan Ferry’s career. ‘Disc One: The Best Of Bryan Ferry’ presents 20 essential tracks. ‘Disc Two: Compositions’ examines the 1977-2014 period. ‘Disc Three: Interpretations’ celebrates the remodeling side to Ferry’s artistry. ‘Disc Four: The Bryan Ferry Orchestra’ explores the conceptual project that Ferry began with 2012’s The Jazz Age album, reimagining music from across his own repertoire. He refined this concept across two further collections, 2018’s Bitter-Sweet and 2013’s The Great Gatsby: The Jazz Recordings - featuring reworkings of Roxy Music’s ‘Love Is The Drug’ and Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back To Black’ for the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 cinematic release, The Great Gatsby. ‘Disc Five: Rare and Unreleased’ gathers B-sides, extras, curiosities and outtakes. A remake of Roxy Music’s ‘Mother Of Pearl’ recorded in the early-1990s during the Horoscope / Mamouna sessions features backing vocals from the late Ronnie Spector. ‘Don’t Be Cruel’ has Elvis’s original bandmates Scotty Moore and DJ Fontana, recorded for 2001’s Sun Records tribute album, Good Rockin’ Tonight.

All-star tribute album to Jesse Malin coming in September

“As always in my songs, the themes are all there— transcendence, positivity and global unity through music,” says Jesse Malin. “This is what I love to do, and I’m going to do everything I can to keep doing it.” Silver Patron Saints: The Songs of Jesse Malin is tribute and benefit album, out Sept. 20, with all proceeds to Jesse Malin’s Sweet Relief artist fund.

“This record is a dynamite and long-overdue awareness project, non-stop star time in vigorously personal twists on behalf of a great rock & roll songbook,” writes longtime supporter, David Fricke.

Long a contributor to other people’s causes, Malin is grateful to all the musicians who have rallied around him, including Bruce Springsteen, Billie Joe Armstrong, Lucinda Williams and Elvis Costello, The Hold Steady, Tommy Stinson, Alison Mosshart with the late Wayne Kramer, Tom Morello, Counting Crows, Dinosaur Jr., The Wallflowers, Spoon, Susanna Hoffs, Frank Turner and Rancid, among others. The original version was on Glitter in the Gutter, released in 2007 on Green Day’s label, Adeline Records. Jesse met Billie Joe in the ‘90s, when Malin’s band D-Generation opened for Social Distortion. Malin has opened for Green Day in the US and Europe. He and Armstrong formed the band Rodeo Queens—check out “Depression Times”—and Billie co-wrote the song “Strangers & Thieves” from Malin’s 2019 album, Sunset Kids.

“Jesse is a dear friend to me,” says Armstrong. “I love his songwriting. He is all heart…His passion is endless. We send each other YouTube videos (mostly old Ramones clips and New York Dolls). Every time I’m in New York he goes out of his way to make me, my friends and my family feel at home. He’s always down for a laugh or a shoulder to cry on. Jesse, we love you and we’d do anything for you.”

“When I heard Billie Joe was doing ‘Black Haired Girl’ I was so blown away, adds Malin. “Billie took it to another level, a lot of attitude, a lot of power, a lot of style, like everything that he does.”

Malin will return to the stage at the Beacon Theatre in New York City for the largest hometown shows of his career. December 1 is sold out and December 2 is on sale now at Ticketmaster with premium packages available through Sweet Relief. All proceeds from the shows will benefit Jesse’s Sweet Relief Artist Fund.

Malin will perform a full set with his band, followed by special guests on each show including Lucinda Williams, Jakob Dylan, Butch Walker, J Mascis, Adam and David Immergluck of Counting Crows, The Hold Steady, and Alejandro Escovedo, with more guests to be announced.

In May 2023, Malin suffered a rare spinal stroke that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Last December, Malin told Rolling Stone, “I have a lot of anxiety and insomnia. Your mind goes into some dark places. But I just have to keep a positive outlook and believe.” He is now undergoing a strict daily regimen with physical therapy and stem-cell treatments.

"I am getting some strength back in my legs, but it moves a lot slower than I would like. I don’t want to portray it like I'm ready to do the James Brown splits onstage. I definitely have a long way to go, but I'm blessed and so grateful for the amazing fans and friends that I have.”

Fricke adds, “Jesse Malin knows about scars – from his youth, observation and more. They all carry tales, and he's not done telling them. Silver Patron Saints is the gang back at the bar, coming to the stage to toast the composer and his story so far.”

U2 news: ZOO TV EP

Interscope Records announces the release of ZOO TV – Live In Dublin 1993 EP, out August 30. Pre-order it here.

The EP features five tracks from one of U2's two open-air performances at the RDS Arena, Dublin in August 1993, the hometown stop on the European ‘Zooropa’ leg of their worldwide ZOO TV Tour. While sought-after bootlegged copies of the RDS show audio have been in circulation for years, this marks the first official release. 

Hitting the road in support of their acclaimed 1991 album ‘Achtung Baby’, ZOO TV took U2 around the world between February 1992 and December 1993, playing to 5.3 million fans over 157 shows and 5 legs, a period which also saw the band record and release their eighth studio album ‘Zooropa’. In another first, a worldwide live radio broadcast of the August 28, RDS, Dublin show allowed an estimated 700 million fans around the globe to tune in. 

ZOO TV – Live In Dublin 1993 EP will be available in the following formats:

Miranda Lambert reveals details of 'Postcards from Texas' album out in September

Republic RecordsMiranda Lambert's 'Postcards from Texas' is available to pre-order HERE. Following previous new tracks “Wranglers” and “Dammit Randy” is the latest taste of the album, “Alimony.”

“We were out in my barn; I was showing Shane and Natalie the horses, and I asked if he had any other titles,” Lambert remembers of the day she, Shane McAnally and Natalie Hemby hit a creative streak. “He said he had one, and I was like, ‘What is it? Because your last one was ‘Looking Back on Luckenbach,’ which I didn’t think you could top. He said, ‘Well, ‘If you’re gonna leave me in San Antone, remember the Alamo-neeeee…’’ Natalie and I were like, ‘Alright, Shane! Stop showing off.’

“We went back to the house and got the guitars,” Lambert continues, “and I specifically was like, ‘I want a shuffle, man.’ I love to shuffle so much, and this record needed a shuffle! I knew I wanted one in my set, because I haven't done one in a while – and everybody loves a shuffle.”

Beyond warning about the consequences of the buckle-polishing that dissolves marriages, “Alimony” draws on Lambert’s childhood. Laughing, she offers, “My parents were private investigators in Dallas, Texas who worked a ton of divorce cases in highfalutin parts of town, so this wasn’t hard to write. I’d heard about it my whole life.

“And once we had the line – If you’re gonna leave me in San Antone, remember the alimony – we were off! We used every Texas metaphor we could come up with on purpose; we wanted to take something kind of shitty and put some humor back in it. I mean, the guy gets out pretty easy if all he does is move back in with his mom.”

Grammy-winning songwriter Jon Randall co-produced the album.

New EP to mark 40th Anniversary of George Michael's 'Careless Whisper'

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the release of George Michael's massive worldwide hit single ‘Careless Whisper,’ the ‘Careless Whisper EP’ will be released on October 18. Available on both digital and physical formats, the EP includes a previously unreleased live version performed at Madison Square Garden in New York City during George’s concert on the July 23, 2008.

The recording marked his reunion with a New York audience after a 17-year hiatus. It was part of his 25Live tour, a worldwide success that sold out arenas and stadiums of over 1.3 million fans across the globe. 

The EP will also include newly mastered versions of the original single, the extended mix and instrumental.

Topping the charts in 25 countries back in 1984, today ‘Careless Whisper’ is certified 7 x Platinum in The United States and has sold over 1.5 million copies in the UK alone. It has also been certified Platinum and Diamond in a further 20 countries.

It was written with Wham! band mate Andrew Ridgeley when George Michael was 17 years old and resulted in him becoming the youngest recipient of an Ivor Novello Award at 21 years old. Pixies' new album to arrive in October

Since I interviewed the band's guitarist for the last album (see elsewhere on this blog), I'm anxious to hear the new stuff...

Pixies announce their brand-new studio album, The Night the Zombies Came, due for release on October 25 via BMG. You can pre-order the album HERE.

Thirty-five years since their debut album Doolittle landed in the U.K. Top Ten and was certified Platinum in America, and 20 years since their celebrated reformation at Coachella, Pixies are continually a creative entity. 

The Night the Zombies Came is Pixies’ tenth album if you count their classic 1987 4AD EP Come On Pilgrim and the first new music since 2022’s acclaimed Doggerel LP.

Songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist Black Francis explains, “Fragments that are related and juxtaposed with other fragments in other songs. And in a collection of songs in a so-called LP, you end up making a kind of movie.”

‘Chicken’ finds Francis personifying poultry, dealing with decapitation and feeling like an actor in Zombie movies. Listen HERE.

The Night the Zombies Came will also include ‘You’re So Impatient,’ the brand-new single with AA-side ‘Que Sera, Sera.’ For the new album recording sessions, the band returned to work with producer Tom Dalgety, who drummer David Lovering refers to as “a fifth Pixie” after producing 2016’s Head Carrier, 2019’s Beneath the Eyrie and 2022’s Doggerel.

Early on in the recording process at Guilford Sound studio in Vermont, the band noticed the new songs were dividing into two camps: what they came to call the “Dust Bowl Songs” - country-tinged, ballad-esque numbers such as ‘Primrose’ and ‘Mercy Me,’ and on the other side, the album’s furious punk numbers such as ‘You’re So Impatient’ and ‘Oyster Beds.’ Only ‘Jane (The Night the Zombies Came)’ keeps its feet in both camps — a track that Black Francis allegedly likened to being chased by a swarm of bees.

The Night the Zombies Came sessions also saw Pixies welcoming new bass player Emma Richardson (Band Of Skulls) to the lineup, the first British band member to join the Pixies. There’s also an expanded role for guitarist Joey Santiago. After contributing his first-ever Pixies lyrics on Doggerel, for the new record, Santiago wrote the words to ‘Hypnotised’ by completing a complex lyrical riddle of sorts, known as a sestina.

The news of The Night the Zombies Came arrives amidst a packed touring schedule set to take in circa 70 live shows worldwide through 2024 - with even more dates to be announced for 2025. The band just wrapped a tour across North America with Modest Mouse and Cat Power and is playing through Europe before returning to the U.K. in August for a run of already sold-out headline shows at Glasgow Academy and Halifax’s Piece Hall. Major festival performances at London’s All Points East, Victorious, and headline shows at Galway Airport, Belfast’s Custom House Square, and Dublin’s RDS Simmonscourt are all scheduled.

Genesis news

This summer, 13 Genesis studio albums released between 1971 and 1997 will be reissued on LP worldwide via Rhino Records. Pressed on 180g vinyl, the albums—featuring Nick Davis mixed and remastered versions—will be available in three waves.

They begin on August 23 with Foxtrot, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (2LP), Duke, Abacab, and Genesis. On September 6, Nursery Cryme, Selling England By The Pound, Wind & Wuthering, We Can’t Dance (2LP), and Calling All Stations (2LP) will be released. The series concludes on September 27 with A Trick Of The Tail, ...And Then There Were Three…, and Invisible Touch.

Genesis’ catalog includes 15 studio albums, six live LPs, and dozens of charting singles. In addition to its 2010 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the band has received an Ivor Novello Award, a GRAMMY®, an American Music Award, and the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award at Britain’s Progressive Music Awards.

Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks did a brief run of final U.S. reunion dates that incredibly didn't include the West Coast in November 2021.

10,000 Maniacs slate expanded 'MTV Unplugged,' debuting on LP, in September

10,000 Maniacs spent the 1990s notching four consecutive platinum and multi-platinum albums, including a live album from their appearance on MTV Unplugged. That performance marked the final recording with lead singer Natalie Merchant before she embarked on her solo career.

On September 6, Rhino will reissue 10,000 Maniacs’ live album, MTV Unplugged (Expanded Edition), with newly remastered sound and bonus tracks. The album will be available on CD and for the first time ever on vinyl. Pre-order HERE. On the same day, a special cobalt blue vinyl edition will be offered exclusively at select retailers.

The upcoming reissue includes three tracks from the MTV Unplugged session that were not included on the original release. On those songs, the band is joined by David Byrne of Talking Heads for covers of Iris DeMent’s “Let The Mystery Be,” Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” and Jimmie Dale Gilmore’s “Dallas.”

Originally released in October 1993, MTV Unplugged became 10,000 Maniacs’ most commercially successful album and has been certified triple platinum. It spent 45 weeks on the Billboard 200 (peaking at No. 13) and included the band’s hit version of Patti Smith and Bruce Springsteen’s “Because The Night.”

The collection showcases acoustic versions of songs from three of the band’s previous albums: In My Tribe (1987), Blind Man’s Zoo (1989), and Our Time in Eden (1992).

Fronted by Mary Ramsey off and on since 1993, the current lineup of 10,000 Maniacs - with original members Dennis Drew, John Lombardo, Steve Gustafson and longtime drummer Jerry Augustyniak - will be playing select shows throughout the Fall, headlining at the Toonerville Music Festival September 21 in Pelham, New York. Johnny Marr + the Healers' 'Boomslang' album to get deluxe reissue in September; US tour with James soon

Johnny Marr announces the special edition reissue of Boomslang. First released by Johnny Marr + the Healers in 2003, the album will now be available in its entirety for the first time in 21 years, due for release on September 20th, 2024 via BMG.

In addition to the album’s 11 original songs, Boomslang 2024 offers fans new and unheard material from the first and only album by Johnny Marr + the Healers. Seven previously unreleased recordings titled “The Way That It Was,” “Get Me Wrong,” “A Woman Like You,” a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice It’s All Right,” plus an extended mix of original album track “You Are The Magic (Union Mix),” “Get Me Wrong (Instrumental Version)” and the expansive, swirling desert jam “All Out Attack.”


After becoming a member of The Pretenders, The The, Electronic, Neil Finn’s 7 Worlds Collide, and writing and performing with Pet Shop Boys, Bryan Ferry, Kirsty MacColl, Talking Heads, Beck and countless others, Johnny Marr + the Healers formed by chance.

Marr first met The Who drummer Zak Starkey following a concert by that band at Madison Square Garden in the summer of 1999. Former Kula Shaker bassist Alonza Bevan joined the pair later, following a recommendation from Noel Gallagher. Percussionist Liz Bonney and guitarist Adam Gray also joined up. 

Reflecting on Boomslang, Johnny Marr said:

“We holed ourselves up in our own otherworld and experimented with different ways to write, record and think; guitars and percussion all together in a room, and programming with new technology from the electronic scene. Everything was about discovery.

Twenty years on, I'm pleased we created the music and this new release of Boomslang has given me the opportunity to revisit it and present some songs that we weren't able to include the first time around. The Healers was something special that happened to me and I'm grateful that it did. A special group of people in a special moment in time."

The Healers provided a vital stepping stone for Marr’s next creative chapter. After touring America and releasing Boomslang, Johnny became a member of Modest Mouse, later leaving to join The Cribs, all before launching his current band in 2013.

Marr’s solo output has given rise to five UK Top Ten albums - The Messenger (2013), Playland (2014), Call The Comet (2018), Fever Dreams Pts 1-4 (2022) and Spirit Power: The Best Of Johnny Marr (2023).

The news of Boomslang arrives amidst a busy live season for Johnny Marr. The Spirit Power Tour continues through the summer months amongst a wave of activity celebrating the first ten years of Johnny’s solo career. Following a sold out UK headline tour and performances at the Isle of Wight Festival, Sea Sessions, Forest Live and Lytham Festival, Johnny will perform a huge homecoming show at Wythenshawe Park with New Order in August ahead of touring across North America with James through September. Boomslang, including seven additional tracks, will be released on formats including 2LP 180g vinyl, 2CD and HD streaming/download via BMG. The album is re-mastered by original Boomslang engineer, Frank Arkwright.

Desert Daze '24 lineup announced with Jack White, Liz Phair, Cigarettes After Sex, others

Desert Daze returns October 10-13 to Lake Perris, CA – the gathering’s home since 2018. This marks the first Desert Daze in two years. T
he 2024 lineup features artists from the worlds of psych rock, hip hop, electronic, jazz music and more.

There will be main stage performances from Jack White who just released his vinyl-only album, No Name; Cigarettes After Sex, performing on the heels of two sold out nights at LA’s Kia Forum; Philly singer-songwriter Alex G; and reunited prog rock band The Mars Volta.

Over the course of the three days and nights on Lake Perris, Desert Daze will also see performances from De La Soul, Thundercat, Liz Phair, Fleet Foxes, Molchat Doma, The Kills, Beach Fossils, DIIV, Hinds, and more. See the full lineup below.

A few of the special appearances at Desert Daze 2024 include original riot grrrl and punk rocker Kathleen Hanna reading from her New York Times bestselling memoir Rebel Girl: My Life as a Feminist Punk and in conversation with Cedric Bixler-Zavala (The Mars Volta, At The Drive-In); Death From Above 1979 performing their debut album You're A Woman, I'm A Machine, celebrating the album’s 20th anniversary; and Temples’ 10th Anniversary performance of their debut album, Sun Structures.

New this year: Los Angeles venue, recording studio and hotel Gold Diggers will curate a tent featuring acclaimed Chicago-based jazz drummer, composer and producer, Makaya Mccraven, Tortoise’s Jeff Parker, musician and skateboarding icon Tommy Guerrero, acclaimed British singer Carina Round (Tears for Fears, Puscifer), and more; and Los Angeles-based label and promoter Jazz Is Dead will showcase their artists including Ebo Taylor + Pat Thomas, and co-founder Adrian Younge.

Desert Daze will see the return of The Sanctuary curated by Cristopher Cichocki, and of The Outer Space with matinee and late night programming in the camping village featuring yoga, sound baths, live performances and more. The opening ritual in The Outer Space – the Thursday Night Welcoming Committee – will feature White Fence, English Teacher, Peel Dream Magazine, Psymon Spine and more; and the Closing Ceremonies will end the festivities at Desert Daze 2024 with a performance from Desert Daze co-founder Phil Pirrone’s collective jjuujjuu along with many of their friends.

Scottish singer/songwriter Hamish Hawk's new album slated for August with UK/European tour dates with Travis

A Firmer Hand, t
he third studio album (and fifth overall) by queer Scottish singer/songwriter Hamish Hawk, will be released on August 16 via Fierce Panda. The third and latest single, “Men Like Wire” is a song he notes is..."about men. Men I have and haven’t known, men I’ve seen, heard, loved and lost. Men I’ve seated next to at weddings, bus stops and dinner parties, on trains, beds and park benches. They’re all in there, for better, for worse.”

Landing somewhere between Talking Heads, Franz Ferdinand and the Pet Shop Boys, the album, as Hawk, 32, puts it, relies less than ever on the “raised eyebrow” to make its mark. A people pleaser by nature, he appears unwilling to gladhand this time around. Though his obsession with crafting the perfect couplet remains undimmed, and comes with an admirably high success rate, at times on A Firmer Hand there is a tendency to say more by saying less. 

Hamish adds, “Writing this album, I opened up my closet, and a skeleton came out. The thing that links all of the songs is a sense of the unsaid, whether out of guilt, shame, repression, embarrassment, coyness, whatever it might have been. I realised: I am going to say these things, and not all of them are going to make me look good. The album made so many demands, and I just gave myself over to it. Once I'd given myself over to the idea, I thought, I have to stick to this. I can’t hide anything from it. I can’t clean it all up for consumption. It felt uncomfortable for me – and that’s exactly how it should feel. That’s a really strong position.”

A Firmer Hand was produced by Rod Jones of long running indie rock band Idlewild at Post Electric studios in Leith, with his band, largely recorded live in the studio. It follows 2023’s acclaimed album Angel Numbers.

After doing the UK festival circuit for a few weeks and in stores around home this summer, Hawk embarks on several UK/European tour opening stints for Travis in late August, September and December.

British pop legend Alison Moyet to revisit '80s classics and more on October album 'Key'

Since I interviewed Alison for her last new studio album, I'm anxious to hear this one...

It’s been 40 years since Alison Moyet stepped out of Yazoo and fired up a solo career with her #1 debut album Alf and Top 10 hits "Love Resurrection" and "All Cried Out." Hee career highlights include two #1 UK albums, six Top 10 UK singles, two BRIT Awards and a GRAMMY® nomination.

Following her recent graduation from Brighton University in 2023 with a first-class degree in Fine Art Printmaking BA (Hons), Alison Moyet has combined both art and music here, creating the album art herself to celebrate her 40th year as a solo artist with the release of Key on October 4th - a collection of 16 reworked singles, fan favorites and deep cuts as well as two new songs.

She launched the album by sharing one of its brand new songs, "Such Small Ale" alongside the reworked classic Moyet single "All Cried Out" (Listen HERE).

Alison says, “I wanted to take the opportunity to look at the trajectory of the past four decades and explore songs that, in their original form, were never fully realised or have had their relevance to me altered by time.”

One of the lesser-discovered gems from Alison’s published works, "So Am I" features on her 1994 album Essex. It is counted amongst Moyet’s favorites.

The songs on Key were all reimagined alongside her producer, arranger and musical director Sean McGhee. "Such Small Ale" was penned with McGhee and Suede guitarist Richard Oakes, the latter of whom performs on several tracks on the album.

Alison adds, “I hope this collection will be the key to those unopened doors. Let yourself in.”

Moyet concludes, “Live work really matters to me. I can’t dial in a performance. I love the physical feeling that singing gives me. It’s totally primal and euphoric. On stage, I remember how to connect with myself.”

Bronski Beat's classic album ‘The Age of Consent' to get box set treatment in October to mark 40th anniversary

On October 18, London Records will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Bronski Beat's debut album, ‘The Age of Consent,’ with deluxe reissues. Speaking about the legacy of the album, Jimmy Sommerville reveals, “When there is something we do in our life that can have such an impact on other peoples’ lives, and to be told this by others, it's humbling. 'The Age of Consent’ is, and always will be, such a special part of my life.”

London Records has shared a remix of “Smalltown Boy” by singer-songwriter, composer, producer, DJ, and director Planningtorock. A self-taught, trans-non-binary, working-class musician, they've spent almost two decades working as a remixer for Lady Gaga, Robyn, Christine and The Queens and Romy.

“Smalltown Boy” has been listed among Rolling Stone’s Greatest Dance Songs, Time Out’s Best Pride Songs, and continues to reach new audiences. The track had a steady climb back to #51 in the UK singles charts (its highest chart entry since August 1984) recently, in part due to celebrities like Cyndi Lauper, Kevin Bacon and Jennifer Garner jumping on the viral TikTok trend of reliving 80s dance moves using the song. In addition to this, Jimmy’s message on social media around the track has had over a million views across the Bronski Beat social media channels.

Released in 1984, ‘The Age of Consent’ was a leading voice in the fight for queer liberation and equal rights, addressing the struggles and triumphs of LGBTQ+ communities at a time when such discussions were often silenced. Fast forward 40 years, and while some milestones such as equal marriage have been won, the fight for true equality throughout the LGBTQ+ community continues. The album’s themes of liberation and defiance remain as prescient today as they were then. In the 1984 release, Bronski Beat listed the ages of consent in every country around the world on the inside jacket and the album still serves as a reminder of both progress made and battles yet to be won by an increasingly marginalized LGBTQ+ community.

The 40th-anniversary reissue of ‘The Age of Consent’ will be available in physical and digital formats, including a 5-Disc Deluxe Edition (4CD+DVD): featuring 4 essays by Tom Rasmussen, Lesley Chow, Lucy Robinson, and Barney Ashton-Bullock, the original album, bonus tracks, remixes, rarities, early versions, and rare radio sessions. Flashback Friday: My interview with Train's Pat Monahan for 2022's 'AM Gold'

Since Train recently started a North American tour with REO Speedwagon (see dates below), I thought it would be a good time to revisit my May 2022 Rock Cellar Magazine cover story interview with Train leader Pat Monahan...


Train first came to prominence with the double-platinum single “Meet Virginia,” off its 1998 self-titled debut album. Since then, the affable pop/rock band led by singer/songwriter Pat Monahan has landed nearly two dozen hits at Adult Rock radio, including such staples as “Drops of Jupiter,” “Calling All Angels,” “Hey, Soul Sister,” “If It’s Love,” “Drive By,” “50 Ways to Say Goodbye,” “Bruises,” “Angel in Blue Jeans” and more.

We caught up with Monahan from his home in Issaquah, Wash., on the eve of the release of Train’s 11th studio album AM Gold, a terrific collection of tunes ranging from summery pop (“Amber Light”) and acoustic-based folk (“It’s Everything”) to blue-eyed soul (“Easy on the Eyes”), a festive Latin-tinged jam (“Cleopatra”) and the danceable title track. The record will be released on May 20. Our conversation has been lightly edited for clarity.

Rock Cellar: When I first heard AM Gold, I was immediately struck by how diverse the songs were. As you were making it, did you have an “anything goes” mindset?

Pat Monahan: When we were writing the record, because of how eclectic it was, my manager came up with the name AM Gold. He felt like it was like an old-school AM Gold compilation of a bunch of different varieties of music. Seemed like an appropriate name.

Rock Cellar: I was only vaguely familiar with those pop music compilations. While growing up, I had some K-Tel compilations on vinyl. Remember those?

Pat Monahan: Yes. The same thing, really.

Rock Cellar: The new album was the first time you’d written a complete album with Train keyboardist Jerry Becker and drummer Matt Musty. How did that work out? What did they bring to the process?

Pat Monahan: You know, it was really excellent because I don’t think like other people when they write songs. To me, it either is or it isn’t. They’re much more mathematical and put way more thought into it, like the key of the song and the tempo and the past and what’s worked for me as a vocalist. They really just created these perfect environments to write melodies and lyrics in. It was just a great experience. Plus, they’re really good friends, so it was that much easier.

Rock Cellar: This album is the third Train record with producer Butch Walker, who has an amazing track record. What is the key to your ongoing musical partnership?

Pat Monahan: He brought nothing to the table. I’m kidding! He’s an extraordinarily talented, wonderful guy. Butch maybe wouldn’t be the right guy for a certain kind of pop album, but he was the perfect guy for this [one]. Not just because he is a close friend and a great musician, but because we’re a similar age. He understands the same era and what I was trying to get done. I think he did a beautiful job recording it.

Then Rob Mathes, who is an incredible string and horn writer, did a beautiful job to finish everything up for us.

Rock Cellar: Was the recording done in-person at a studio, or did you have to do it remotely because of the COVID-19 pandemic?

Pat Monahan: The writing we did remotely. We recorded all of the basic tracking together live. I was there with Rob and Butch when we did all the strings and horns.

Rock Cellar: How about with Jewel and Sofia Reyes, your female guest vocalists on the album? Were you able to record together with them in the studio?

Pat Monahan: No, they did that on their own and then sent the tracks in so we could use what worked well. It was the first time that I’ve ever had Jewel on a record, even though I’ve known her for a long time. We just shot a music video for “Cleopatra” last week, so it was the first time I got to meet Sofia. She is really cool, super talented, lovely, and she just made the whole thing a lot of fun.

Rock Cellar: Speaking of female singers, the “AM Gold” remix by Swedish DJ Tobtok featuring Mel C of the Spice Girls slows down the tempo, but it’s still very rhythmic. How did that come about?

Pat Monahan: A guy (with my management) is a huge Spice Girls fan. He said, ‘If I can get Sporty Spice on this, would you be excited about it?’ I was like, ‘Are you kidding me? That would be amazing!’ He put a call in, she sang on it and did a really great job. I could go on with all the “tell me what you want” jokes, but it was really cool to have her on there.

Rock Cellar: On the past few Train albums, you’ve used samples or interpolations here and there, and the new album has a couple as well. During “Turn the Radio Up,” the song with Jewel and a ripping guitar solo, you sample an old Irma Thomas tune, correct?

Pat Monahan: Yes. That came from a young kid that put a track together and then we finished the song.

Rock Cellar: During “Cleopatra,” there’s a quick drum bit reminiscent of Phil Collins’ classic work on “In the Air Tonight.” What am I hearing there?

Pat Monahan: It was a version of it that wouldn’t get us in trouble and wouldn’t be too expensive. It’s the idea of it instead of the actual beat.

Rock Cellar: One of the standouts on the new album is the ballad “Fake Flowers.” The lyric “the only thing real about you is your lies” isn’t exactly the happiest sentiment.

Pat Monahan: I was asked if I would be interested in getting involved and writing the music for a musical called Begin Again. It was a movie [from 2013 starring Mark Ruffalo, Keira Knightley, James Corden and Adam Levine]. I think the music in the movie was the weakest part of the movie. I said, “What I’d rather do is write a song and see if you like the idea. If you do, then maybe I’m your guy. But you should probably have about four [people] out there doing something like this so you can see who’s the right person.”

I wrote “Fake Flowers” and they loved it, but it didn’t work for the musical … I really had wanted it to sound like Oasis. Because to me, it’s a very Oasis kind of idea. But Butch said it should sound like the rest of the album, not like Oasis: ‘If we do that, it’s not going to sound right.’

It’s a real-life story for me. All these songs are real life stories for me.

Rock Cellar: There’s a really gorgeous string arrangement on that song.

Pat Monahan: Yeah, Rob really killed it on that.

Rock Cellar: At the beginning of “Ain’t No Easy Way,” you sing, “Up in the Northwest/The girls always say/If he’s the one/Don’t let him get away.” Was that a reference to you living in Washington state?

Pat Monahan: Yeah, of course and the fact that, coming from San Francisco, I don’t always know that I belong here, but I’m making it work. I know my family belongs here. My wife is from here. Sometimes you never know where you belong, you know?

Rock Cellar: The first lines to the song “AM Gold” find you singing: “If he don’t love you no more/She don’t love you no more/They don’t love you/Then you love yourself and turn around.” Were the song lyrics meant to be a nod toward self-acceptance and inclusiveness

Pat Monahan: Yeah, I think every generation struggles with self-love. I know that I do. Young people are on more anti-depressants than ever. I think sometimes we want the wrong people to love us. I have a neighbor who has a son that used to be their daughter. For a while, he wanted to be referred to as they/them, instead of he or she. I felt like that should be included in the song too. So, I included “they don’t love you.” It was the right thing to do.

Rock Cellar: For those of us who still care about album running orders on LPs and CDs: “It’s Everything” caps AM Gold off on a simple, acoustic melancholy note. That reminded me of Save Me, San Francisco, which you concluded with what became the popular wedding ballad “Marry Me.” Was that intentional?

Pat Monahan: It was. But I’m not very good at that, so I left that to everybody else. My manager started the process and Jerry finished it because there were certain keys that made sense together. He flipped a couple things and made it the way it is now.

Rock Cellar: You really put Train’s female backing singers to good use on the soulful “Bettin’ on Me.”

Pat Monahan: The background vocals on that song really mean a lot. I was golfing with a friend of mine, Sid Rice, a Super Bowl champion who played for the Seattle Seahawks for years. We were playing a game called Wolf. The first person to hit is the wolf. Then he gets to choose one other person to be on his team based on the first shot being good or not. He didn’t choose anybody.

I said, “Sid, you’re going to be the lone wolf.” He said, “I’m bettin’ on me.” I took that and gave him some writing credit. That song really does sum up my life [because] no one’s really thinking, “Hey, I wonder what Train’s doing right now? I wonder what kind of record they’re going to make?” If I don’t bet on me, then nobody will.

Rock Cellar: When the “AM Gold” single and your summer tour with Jewel and Blues Traveler were first announced a few months ago, actor/comedian Ken Jeong appeared in some brief video segments from a ship wearing a captain’s hat, talking about Train and yacht rock. What do you think of the music aesthetic and the fact that some of your new songs tend to lean into that sound?

Pat Monahan: I think yacht rock is probably one of my favorite types of music. Even though I listen to a lot of hip-hop. I just did a listening party at a casino … like John Lennon said a long time ago: “I write songs for my generation.”

This listening party wasn’t filled with 25-year-olds, but it was filled with people that are gonna love this record. Because if we still mean something to you, you want an album, you don’t want just the single.

This is definitely my favorite Train record. I probably say that about every record that’s new, but I can listen to it and just be really happy with everything, song after song, which is not normal for me.

Rock Cellar: Is Ken Jeong a longtime Train supporter?

Pat Monahan: Ken has been a really great friend for years. There’s a few people you meet in your life that have really big brains and even bigger hearts. He’s one of those guys. I feel like he has a similar feeling about me and Jerry and the guys. We’ve been close for a long time. We honestly would do whatever it took for one another. It’s a great friendship.

I have that [same] friendship with a few comedians like George Lopez. We [will do another] cruise [The 7th Sail Across the Sun, in February 2023, from Miami to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic], and comedian Nick Swardson is on the cruise. We do a lot of stuff together. I find that comedians have had their egos in check for a long time, because to be a comedian you have to put that stuff to the side. I always have felt I have that in common with comedians more than musicians.

Rock Cellar: Would you ever agree to appear on The Masked Singer like Jewel did?

Pat Monahan: No, but I wouldn’t mind sitting next to Ken if I was on The Masked Singer. My managers won’t let me get into a bunny outfit. She looked cute doing it and it worked out great for her, but for somebody like me, it’s not as cute.

Rock Cellar: We talked about yacht rock and one band that falls under than umbrella, especially for their 1970s work, is Daryl Hall and John Oates. Being a Pennsylvania native, what was the experience like to tour with them a few years ago and then guest on their first all-new song in years, “Philly Forget Me Not?”

Pat Monahan: When I did Live from Daryl’s House, Daryl and I got on really well. John and I have had sushi together in Aspen. John lived in Colorado when I first met him. He’s in Nashville now. Going out on tour and spending 3 ½ months with them was a lot of fun. I got to sing onstage with them. We had a great tour.

Rock Cellar: In 2016, you released the tribute album Train Does Led Zeppelin II, which I thought was excellent. Weren’t you in a Led Zeppelin cover band back in Pennsylvania before Train formed in California?

Pat Monahan: Yeah, I was in a band that did covers. We had to do three sets a night. The first one was whatever the current songs were at the time because the bar wasn’t full. The second one was classic rock. Then the bar would start to fill up. By midnight, the bar was jammed because they knew we were going to do an hour’s worth of Zeppelin. It’s everybody’s favorite band who started when I started and learned to play an instrument. Everybody in that band was so special at what they did.

I wanted people to hear how talented Train is musically [now] and I think Led Zeppelin II was the way to do that. When my managers heard (our tribute), they said, ‘This is too good to give to people. Let’s see if we can sell some of these and we’ll give all the proceeds to Family House in San Francisco.” That sounded like a great plan.

Rock Cellar: Did you ever receive any feedback on the tribute album from Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, or John Paul Jones?

Pat Monahan: We weren’t able to put it out unless we got their blessing. They have a board, and the board gets together and says ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to everything that comes through the door. I’m sure that Led Zeppelin gets quite a few requests every day. The [board responded], ‘Yeah man, that sounds great. Do it.’ It would’ve been a bad idea to put it out and have Robert or John Paul Jones say, ‘This is garbage.’

Rock Cellar: You mentioned that proceeds from that album go to the Family House charity, which is also the beneficiary of your Save Me, San Francisco wine sales. How involved are you in creating each new varietal?

Pat Monahan: I am involved. James Foster, my winemaker, will put several blends together and send me samples. I will taste them with my wife and sometimes with neighbors and family. Usually, we all love the same ones. Sometimes there’s a difference of opinion, but it’s about as much as I can get involved because James knows what he’s doing. It would be like James trying to write songs with me. It would be better if I sent him a few songs and then he chose the ones that he likes. It’s kind of like that.

Rock Cellar: Have you raised a lot of money for the charity since starting the wine company

Pat Monahan: Yeah, we’ve sold, I think, 12 million or so bottles of wine. We’ve helped Family House go from 24 rooms and two houses in San Francisco to a building that’s 80 rooms. It’s full every day. They’re doing an amazing job. I think we’ve played a pretty big role in that.

Rock Cellar: What was the experience like working with George Lopez on last year’s Christmas in Tahoe film for the Hallmark Channel?

Pat Monahan: I called George when we were shooting that movie and said, “Hey, how would you feel about flying all the way to Whistler (Canada) and not making any money to make a movie with me?” He said, “I’ve been waiting for this call my whole career.” He came and did that happily.

Now I think we might end up in September, the two of us, shooting another Hallmark movie. They’re working on it right now. They turn things around very quickly. Once a script is done, we check it out, we make our changes and then we get to work. They shoot these movies in a couple of weeks.

Rock Cellar: Whose idea was it to loosely base the film on Train’s 2015 holiday album of the same name?

Pat Monahan: A guy that used to work with [my management] started [a film division]. One of the first things they did was go to Hallmark and said, “Train has a Christmas album. Let’s make this into a movie,” and they loved the idea.

Rock Cellar: I’m a fan of the Anaheim Angels baseball team, which has been using your song “Calling All Angels” as part of its pregame montage for a long time. What did you think when you heard that was going to be happen?

Pat Monahan: I loved it. I would still love it if they weren’t kicking the [Seattle] Mariners’ butts so bad. I’m a [San Francisco] Giants fan. I’m always going to be a Giants fan, but I would like to see the Mariners win just for my family’s sake. They started out so great this year, and it seems like a trend [where] they’ll lose like 11 games in a row.

Rock Cellar: Switching gears, back in 2009, when “Hey, Soul Sister” became this juggernaut that was constantly on the radio and reached No. 3 on Billboard’s Hot 100, what was that period like for you? How did you feel when the song amassed a billion streams on Spotify and was certified Diamond for more than 10 million sales?

Pat Monahan: It’s pretty weird. I don’t really spend much time on the past and glory, but what “Hey, Soul Sister” did was basically saved my career. This goes back to [the sentiment behind] “Bettin’ on Me.” In 2009, it had been eight years since “Drops of Jupiter” and that was so big that no matter what I did, after that it was just gonna be brutally difficult. Even though “Calling All Angels” also did well, the following album tanked. No one ever heard anything from it. I had to really figure out what I was doing.

I was managed by the wrong team. I was heading in a worse direction than ever. I made a solo record that was not successful. That was because I was trying to make a Train record without the people in Train. We also had the wrong people in the band.

When I wrote “Soul Sister,” the key part of all that was that I was lucky enough to be able to team up with Crush Management. Those guys heard “Soul Sister” in a different way than I did. We fired the producer, got rid of our lawyer, I switched managers, got rid of band mates and had a fresh slate. It cost me a lot of money but in the end, it was Crush’s great leadership, and they were able to save my career.

Now it was a whole new ballgame, because that song was such a global success for Train. Since then, the success of “Drive By” made me feel even better than “Soul Sister” because it did better in Europe than “Soul Sister” did. I felt like, “OK, this isn’t a fluke.”

That’s what I’d like to think about this new album. I’m always thinking about what’s happening now instead of a billion streams, which is a great accomplishment. I’m really not good at taking a bow. I would love for this album to remind people that it ain’t over yet. We’ll see.

Rock Cellar: Nowadays, is the recording process easier because the current Train lineup is so versatile?

Pat Monahan: Yeah. When Train started, we weren’t high school buddies. We were all just interested in being successful musicians. And being able to quit our day jobs. But the friendships and the love that we had weren’t deep and long-lasting. They were more of a business arrangement.

What’s happened since then is now I’m onstage with my favorite people in the world. It makes a big difference. Plus, they’re so talented that there’s never an apology, there’s never clams where people [mess up] … it’s such a good arrangement and I love these guys. They come through for me and I come through for them.

We’re like a family, and it’s the first time Train has ever been a family.

Rock Cellar: The summer tour with Train, Jewel and Blues Traveler is an impressive package. I heard you’re going to try and have some collaborations happen between the musicians.

Pat Monahan: Yeah, I’ve known John [Popper] and Jewel for some time now. We don’t have to get through the first couple of weeks to feel each other out. We know that we’re friends from the past. The camaraderie is there before we even show up, which is really great.

We’ll join each other onstage because if [for example], Paul McCartney and Peter Frampton were doing a tour together, if you didn’t see them onstage together, you’d be like “this is a fraud.” That’s the way I’ve always felt.

If I’m the leader, the headlining act, it’s my job to bring people together. Just like all the tours I was on that people had the chance to bring us together and either did or didn’t, I learned a lot.

We’re all in this together, and life is fleeting. Someday all we’ll have is the memory of this tour, so let’s make it a great memory.
