Skerryvore to perform in Redlands, Calif. on Friday

When Skerryvore brings some feisty world music to the Redlands Bowl on Friday, it plans to “get the party started,” said singer/guitarist Alec Dalglish. “We do acoustic songs and high energy, electric instrumentals.”

The Glasgow-based band combines traditional Scottish Celtic strains with folk, rock, blues, jazz and Cajun-styled elements. The resulting hybrid sound is like a cross between The Chieftains and Mumford & Sons.

“It helps us stand out among other bands in the general popular music scene” and is something “most wouldn’t expect in a pop/rock context,” Dalglish explained.

Formed in 2005, Skerryvore’s name comes from a lighthouse located off the coast of Tiree, the Westernmost island off mainland Scotland (also mentioned in the 1988 Enya pop hit “Orinoco Flow”). The octet has won the Scots Trad Music Award for Best Live Act twice, while Dalglish received the Scottish New Music Award for Songwriter of the Year.

With several albums that have amassed nearly four million streams, more than 20,000 digital and 70,000 physical sales so far, 2017 saw the release of the “Live Forever” single. It was featured in a Scottish tourism campaign and topped the iTunes World Music chart.

According to Dalglish, last year’s “EVO” album represents “the next part of the evolution in the sound of Skerryvore. It had been a long time since we’d managed to release any new material, so this was our next big step.” Standouts include a sway-worthy "At the End of the Line,"
the driving pace of "Live Forever" and stirring "Take My Hand."

The Redlands gig will be a rare Southern California appearance since Skerryvore has mainly played clubs or theaters in the northern part of the state, not to mention notable gigs elsewhere in America such as New York’s Central Park and the Ryder Cup in Louisville.

Back home, the band hosts Oban Live, a music festival that draws thousands of people annually.

The return of Friendly Fires

photo: Dan Wilton/courtesy: Republic Records
Having spent the last year reminding everyone exactly why they're one of the UK's best loved bands via some live shows, two singles ("Love Like Waves" and "Heaven Let Me In" and a cover of Charles B & Adonis’ "Lack Of Love," Friendly Fires have finally announced their long-waited third album.

Arriving eight years after their last one, Inflorescent will be releases on Aug. 16. The three band members - Ed Macfarlane, Edd Gibson and Jack Savidge - friends since the age of eleven reconvened in Macfarlane's parents' St Albans garage (the scene of much of their early recorded output) at the tail end of 2017.

Alongside producers/co-producers Mark Ralph, James Ford and Disclosure, Friendly Fires have spent the last eighteen months making a record in a variety of London studios. Their previous albums were the Brit Awards and Mercury Prize-nominated Friendly Fires and its acclaimed follow up, Pala.

The new single 'Silhouettes' was recorded in producer Ford's attic studio and features co-production from Ford and Ralph. It nods towards Brazilian disco records.

Previously unreleased version of Freddie Mercury solo song out now

For the first time ever, a previously unreleased version of “Time,” recorded in 1986 by Freddie Mercury for the concept album of the hit UK musical of the same name, has finally emerged after two years of work by Dave Clark, using the song’s full title, “Time Waits For No One.” The track was release via UMe, along with a new video. Listen to the song HERE and watch the video HERE.

“Time Waits For No One” finds Mercury in a stripped-down performance, accompanied by just a piano.

The Story Behind The Song:

“Time” was the brainchild of Dave Clark, former leader of the hugely successful multi-million selling group The Dave Clark Five, and one of the UK’s most prolific and celebrated musicians, songwriters and producers. Time, the West End musical, which opened at London’s Dominion Theatre in April 1986, merged sci-fi, rock music and ahead-of-its-time special effects and multimedia. With a cast including Sir Laurence Olivier and Cliff Richard, it broke box office records and played to over a million people during its two-year run.

For the show’s multi-million selling star-studded concept album, Dave had a song in mind for Freddie (“In My Defence”), and despite industry naysayers claiming he wouldn’t do it, Freddie agreed to fly to London from his then home in Munich, Germany, to record the song at Abbey Road Studios in October 1985.

Of Dave’s minimal band of four session musicians, Mike Moran, who had never met Freddie, was introduced on piano having known Dave for many years; such was the subsequent relationship born with Freddie that Mike went on to write “Barcelona” with the Queen frontman years later. The “Time” session was recorded in a haze of late nights and fueled by “fabulous food, vodka and Cristal Champagne,” courtesy of Freddie’s personal chef Joe Fanelli.

Dave Clark further recalls of the recording session: “We got on great...if I didn’t like something I’d say, and vice versa...we were both aiming for the same thing: to make something special.”

When asked by Freddie if he had anything else, Dave replied with an affirmative, offering the musical’s title track, “Time.” In January 1986, they returned to Abbey Road Studios with a group of amazingly talented musicians to record the song. Dave wrote the song with John Christie, unbeknownst to them at the time at how the words ‘Time waits for no one’ would be so relevant today. Starting off as a rhythm track, the session recorded 48 tracks of backing vocals (Freddie plus John Christie and Peter Straker), 2 x 24 track tapes locked together - which had never been done before for that amount of backing vocals at Abbey Road - and the final version of “Time” comprising of a huge production of 96 tracks.

The video for the song was filmed in three hours on a Tuesday at the Dominion Theatre and was quickly wrapped to allow the musical to prepare for that evening’s performance - it had opened earlier that month with Freddie attending opening night. Worried about capturing the full performance, it was a 4-camera shoot, which was cut together quickly in order to turn it around for that week’s broadcast of the UK’s hit music TV program “Top of the Pops.” Going straight to video, not the original 35mm film it was shot in, the song was released on May 6 of that year, and the original footage was consigned to the vaults.

4 Decades on…96 Tracks to 1:

Dave Clark had always remembered that performance of Freddie Mercury at Abbey Road Studios from 1986. The original had sold millions, and in his own words “worked.” But the feeling he had during the original rehearsal, experiencing “goosebumps,” hadn’t dissipated over the decades, and he wanted to hear this original recording - just Freddie on vocals and Mike Moran on piano. After much searching through the vaults to find the version without all the backing vocals, he finally retrieved it from his tape archive in the spring of 2018.

Bringing in original keyboardist Mike Moran to record a new piano track, restoring the huge potential of this historical performance at the latter’s studio in Buckinghamshire, Dave, firmly believing “the impossible was possible,” eventually produced the performance he had longed to revive - stripping back the 96 track version to a version with just one: Freddie Mercury.

But the audio needed a visual and Dave didn’t want to just cut old footage together. He had the negatives from the 4-camera shoot and the unprocessed film which was being stored for a time at Rank Laboratories in Pinewood but returned to Dave after his 2014 documentary Glad All Over: The Dave Clark Five and Beyond. A four-day lockdown in a special facility to pore through the negatives with his editor led to the discovery and production of this visual masterpiece, a perfect representation of Freddie’s “magic performance...he tasted every word."

Filter’s 'Title of Record' to get reissue treatment

Craft Recordings is set to release a deluxe, 20th anniversary reissue of Filter’s platinum-selling, sophomore album Title of Record.

Due out Aug. 9, the album has been remastered and will be available on vinyl for the first time, as well as on CD and digital. All formats are expanded featuring four bonus tracks: “(Can’t You) Trip Like I Do” (originally recorded for the soundtrack Spawn The Album),“Jurassitol” (previously released on The Crow: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), plus remixes of the singles “The Best Things (Humble Brothers Remix)” and “Take a Picture (H&H Remix).”

Both the two-LP set, and CD will feature new liner notes by Bryan Reesman. The expanded digital album also offers five additional rarities, including a live version of “Take A Picture,” “The Best Things (Dub Pistols Club Mix)” and more.\

First released in 1999, Title of Record was a sonic breakthrough for the Cleveland band. Following four years as a touring guitarist for Nine Inch Nails, primary member Richard Patrick formed Filter in 1993 with guitarist and programmer Brian Liesegang. Their 1995 debut, Short Bus, blended industrial pop with post-grunge metal, and became a best-seller, thanks to the hit single “Hey Man Nice Shot.” Though Liesegang departed the band just two years later, Patrick enlisted two of his touring band members (guitarist Geno Leonardo and bassist Frank Cavanaugh), along with drummer Steven Gillis, to work with him in the studio. D’Arcy Wretzky of The Smashing Pumpkins and cellist Eric Remschneider (The Smashing Pumpkins, Veruca Salt, Plain White T’s) were also collaborators.

The recording process for Title of Record was not so straightforward. The album took over four years to record, due in part to strife between bandmates, Richard Patrick’s struggles with substance abuse, and a tumultuous affair between Patrick and Wretzky (which was anonymously woven into many of the songs on the album, including “Miss Blue,” “It’s Gonna Kill Me” and “I’m Not the Only One”). In the reissue’s liner notes, Patrick recalls, “My behavior started getting worse, and my temper would flare up. It was hard dealing with me high…and coming down from that.”

Dark as the themes were on Title of Record, the album was melodically diverse, offering a more radio-friendly sound than Short Bus, with lush, vocal harmonies, introspective lyrics and even touches of psychedelia. Perhaps the best example of this is in the album’s second single, “Take a Picture,” which would go on to become the band’s biggest hit. Written about Patrick’s inebriated antics on a plane trip, the languid melodies portrayed the musician’s state of mind at the time. “[The song had] this luscious bed of gorgeous chords and dreamy sound because itʼs what drugs feel like,” explains Patrick (who has been sober since 2002). “It was the reality of being a drug addict or an alcoholic – Iʼm either dreaming or Iʼm not.”

Upon its release, Title of Record went top 30 on the Billboard 200, and nearly a year of touring followed.

Listening to the album again, 20 years later, Patrick reflects, “'Title of Record' is Filter’s crowning achievement. Our signature album. It’s amazing how much I loved making this record even though it almost killed me.”

Following the success of Title of Record, Filter would release five more albums, while Patrick would also join The Damning Well (featuring members of Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle, and Limp Bizkit) and Army of Anyone (a collaboration with brothers Dean and Robert DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots). In 2018, it was announced that Brian Liesegang and Richard Patrick had reunited. The duo is currently working on a new album together.

An interview with Nicole Henry; Redlands Bowl show in California on Friday

Music Director Frank Fetta and the Redlands Symphony Orchestra

When: 8 p.m. June 21
Where: Redlands Bowl, 25 Grant St.

The Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival kicks off its 96th season in stellar fashion on Friday with an ode to the Great White Way. Nicole Henry will sing selections from The Wiz, Dreamgirls, West Side Story, Les Miserables and others backed by the Redlands Symphony Orchestra.

A Philadelphia native, the singer majored in theater at the University of Miami. Around the same time, she was featured vocalist on tracks by progressive house and trance DJ/producer Noel W. Sanger. “Miracle,” their 1998 pairing with Westbrook Project, reached the Billboard Dance Club chart. Then Henry toured as a background singer for Robert Bradley’s Blackwater Surprise and later became interested in jazz music.

Debut release “The Nearness of You” emerged in 2004 and immediately drew attention in Japan, where it hit the top 10. Since then, Henry has put out five more full-length albums and an EP, encompassing studio and live recordings. Three went top 30 on Billboard’s jazz chart, while two live cover songs - Rose Royce’s “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore” and Bob Marley & the Wailers’ “Waiting in Vain” - fared even better on the trade magazine’s Smooth Jazz Songs tally. Henry won a Soul Train Music Award in ’13 and sang The National Anthem at the Orange Bowl last year.

We connected with Henry - who has cited Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughn as influences and possesses an expressive, soulful voice that often recalls Whitney Houston and Natalie Cole - via email about her first IE appearance.

Question: What are your thoughts about appearing at the Redlands Bowl?
Answer: It’s fabulous to be part of the beautiful “offering” that is Redlands Bowl Performing Arts. It’s just wonderful that the vision of the Bowl was to give all people free access to the arts. I’m a firm believer that the arts shape and reflect a civilization. When arts are supported in this way, it allows for community, conversation, understanding, learning, expression, fun and a collective celebration. So, I feel tasked with a fabulous responsibility.

Q: Will the “Broadway and Beyond” concert include your personal picks from the musicals and ones that work best with an orchestra?

A: As a lover of big and beautiful music, I think any song can work with orchestra. These are definitely some of my favorites, but this is only my first batch of [live] songs for an orchestra.

Q: You've done Diana Ross’ "Home" from The Wiz before on your 2013 live album “So Good, So Right.” Is that a chance it will make the setlist?
A: Yes, I’d bet good money on that.

Q: Since you earned a degree in theater, is singing compositions musicals extra special for you?

A: Just being able to sing professionally for the last 18 years has been an incredible blessing. I’m fortunate to have been a direct part of so many people’s lives. So, it’s all special for me.

Q: Does preparing for the orchestral format present more challenges than your usual jazz or R&B-oriented concert?

A: It is a wonderful combination of limitations and freedom compared to a smaller format. Usually I’m with a quartet or quintet, where you can extend a song live, give more solos or talk in between a song. But you can’t even begin to consider anything like that when you’ve got 70+ people going in one direction. Once that train leaves the station it is not stopping. The freedom and fun of vocally soaring over 70+ musical voices is unlike any other. Maybe it’s something like skydiving, ballroom dancing and crowd-surfing all in one.

Q: Having studied cello when you were young, do you ever find yourself watching cellists play during lyrical breaks in the songs at orchestral concerts?
A: Absolutely; although I try to save that for rehearsals because it’s easy to get lost in observing and miss my cue to come back in. Playing the cello is such a fulfilling experience. You feel the music in your core.

Q: On the impressive “Summer Sessions” EP, your smooth acoustic covers of Coldplay (“Magic”) and Howard Jones (“No One is to Blame”) were especially memorable. What was your goal with the 2015 James Bryan collaboration?
A: That guitar/vocal duo project was truly a reflection of my love for that format - songs in their simplest form: stripped down to their essence. I love acoustic music and I love a great lyric. I love all kinds of music and songwriters. I hope that is not my last project like that.

Q: Last year, you put out a luxurious jazz take on the standard "Moon River." Are there any new recordings planned this year?

A: I’ve been working on a couple projects. I’m hoping to release a tribute to Nancy Wilson soon. The producer of my orchestra project, Kevin Surace, and I should be working on [another one] soon too. The [earliest] new release will likely be early 2020.

Out now: Chely Wright EP 'Revival'

Over the past decade—on projects like 2010’s Lifted off the Ground, produced by Rodney Crowell, and 2016’s I Am the Rain, produced by Joe Henry—singer-songwriter and LGBT activist Chely Wright had used her songwriting as a salve to soothe the emotional turmoil that accompanied her extraordinary journey from Nashville star to introspective storyteller.

Her latest EP Revival is something different. “The fractured state, the fissures that defined me—that was what my records were about, without my even knowing it,” Wright says. “I’m not as broken as I used to be. I can be so happy right now, and I can sing about being happy. Or I can have a lousy day and I can sing about that. Or I can talk about how hard marriage is. All that’s OK.”

The songs were co-produced and co-written by Jeremy Lister and multi-instrumentalist Dustin Ransom.

Wright explains that they made a point of not letting her veer too close to the tones and themes of her previous music. “Jeremy and Dustin steered me toward narratives that celebrate this idea of, ‘You’re actually the best you’ve ever been as a human.’ That was news to me,” Wright says. “They were able to see, ‘This is a woman who is ready to celebrate where she is at the age of 48. I loved that.’”

On Wright-Lister songs like the duet “Say the Word” and the title track, Wright said she thought "about past relationships I’ve had, and they will never leave me. It’s something my wife, Lauren, and I talk about a lot.

"Those women will be a part of our current relationship, because they helped form who we are. ‘Revival’ is about forgiveness."

“The song also speaks to a hope that I know I’m missing right now,” Wright adds. “I wake up and I’m feeling hopeless about a lot of things in the world and our government, in our public discourse. I like that that song stakes a claim on humanity and healing.”

Listen to Chely Wright's EP Revival here

About Chely Wright:

Wright emerged on the national country-music scene nearly three decades ago. She earned her first major-label deal in 1993; the Academy of Country Music’s Top New Female Vocalist Award in ’95; and her first Top 40 country hit, “Shut Up and Drive,” in ’97. In 2010, Wright released her Random House memoir, Like Me: Confessions of a Heartland Country Singer, and forever altered the social landscape of Nashville. In the end, her identity as both an artist who embodies country music’s core values—a dedicated person of faith and a patriot, Wright was playing for the troops long before most artists considered doing it—and a strong gay woman made her an ideal catalyst for changing hearts and minds.

Currently based in New York City, Wright is now able to convey the entirety of her journey on her terms exclusively. “That’s my view now—the long game,” she says. “As far as touring, I love it more than I ever loved touring before. I have a lot of stories to tell.”
