On this day in 1984: the release of Alphaville's 'Forever Young' album; new deluxe reissue out now

In early 1984, Alphaville released its debut single "Big In Japan." The song went to No. 1 in Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and America's Billboard Dance Chart, but also went Top 10 in the UK and elsewhere.

Following that successful first single, Marian Gold, Bernhard Lloyd and Frank Mertens recorded the debut album Forever Young.

The second single "Sounds Like A Melody" topped the charts in Sweden again and reached the Top 10 in several European countries. The title track "Forever Young" was released along with the album on September 27, 1984.

Since then the track has been covered frequently across all genres (Imagine Dragons, Jay-Z, Kim Wilde) and included in movies and TV shows. The Forever Young album hit the Top 20 in six European countries, went triple Gold in Germany and was awarded a Swedish Rockbjörnen as "best foreign album".

Alphaville vocalist Marian Gold says, "My musical career actually kicked off with a kicking out. When 'Big in Japan' had been released and stormed the charts all over Europe in the blink of an eye I was still busy in this restaurant kitchen in Münster peeling potatoes. And the cook said: 'Boy, they're playing your song on the radio every hour.' And then he threw me out."

Released last spring via Rhino Records, t
he new super deluxe edition box set has a remastered version of the album and additional material. CD 1 features the remastered original album, including "Big in Japan," "Sounds Like A Melody" and "Forever Young." CD 2 presents the original single versions, B-sides and 12" singles. CD 3 contains 16 rare demos and alternative versions as well as some of Alphaville's early compositions in German language.

The DVD features the 60-minute documentary "Never Grow Up - The Story of Forever Young," including current interviews with Marian Gold, Bernhard Lloyd and the original album producers Colin Pearson and Wolfgang Loos among others, as well as the original music videos to "Forever Young," "Big In Japan," "The Jet Set" and "Sounds Like a Melody."

The package has a 24-page, vinyl-sized booklet, created by the art director of the original album in close collaboration with the band itself, containing numerous rare and previously unreleased photos, liner notes, quotes and production notes by the band, its former A&R and the producers.

"Producing the 'Forever Young' album back in the day was quite an adventure that brought about amazing results. We focused mainly on the vinyl album, seeing as CD mastering in 1984 was not yet as advanced. Luckily, I was able to dig up all of the original analogue master tapes that we had actually only recorded to be on the safe side. The newly mastered version of the album has a much warmer, rounder and more transparent sound, just as we had imagined back in the day," says Bernhard Lloyd.

Lady A unveil details of new "Ocean' album

Dave Haywood, Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott of Lady A's forthcoming album OCEAN is set for release Nov. 15 on BMLG Records. It is available now for pre-order at all digital retailers. Fans will also immediately receive a download of the title-track along with previously released songs "Pictures" and their Top 15 single "What If I Never Get Over You.”

“There’s this theme of returning to the core of who we are—as writers, vocalists and people—that came out in each of these songs," Dave Haywood explains. “Our time in the studio with Dann had an excitement that felt like we were making our first album all over again."

Ocean was produced by first-time collaborator Dann Huff.

"It's such a cinematic and theatrical melody with a message that became the cornerstone of this record for us," adds Scott. “'Ocean' is all of the things that we think and feel when we hear the word. This album is immersed in life stories about barely keeping your head above water all the way to those times that make you feel like everything is smooth sailing.”

Depeche Mode concert film/doc headed to theaters in November

Depeche Mode, along with Trafalgar Releasing, Sony Music Entertainment and BBH Entertainment, announce the upcoming release of the new feature-length documentary and concert film, SPIRITS in the Forest, coming to cinemas worldwide for a one-night event on Nov. 21. It will be screened in more than 2,400 cinemas, from Adelaide to Zagreb, in over 70 countries.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker and long-time artistic collaborator Anton Corbijn, the release of Depeche Mode: SPIRITS in the Forest follows the band’s 2017/2018 Global Spirit Tour, which saw them play to over 3 million fans at 115 shows around the world.

Diving into the stories of six special Depeche Mode fans, the film weaves together musical performances filmed at the final shows of the tour at Berlin’s famed Waldbühne (“Forest Stage”) with documentary footage filmed in the fans’ hometowns across the globe.

"I'm exceptionally proud to share this film and the powerful story that it tells," said Dave Gahan, of Depeche Mode. "It's amazing to see the very real ways that music has impacted the lives of our fans."

Added Martin Gore, "In today's world of turmoil and divisiveness, music really can be a force for good and can bring people together."

Screening tickets are on-sale from September 26 at spiritsintheforest.com, where fans can find the most up-to-date information regarding participating theaters and sign up for event alerts.

Ben Lee tackled '90s indie rockers, including Daniel Johnston, on 'Quarter Century Classix'

Ben Lee is set to release Quarter Century Classix on Nov. 22 via New West Records. The 13-song set was produced by Lee and features his interpretations of early ‘90s indie rock favorites. It features appearances by Mike Watt (Minutemen, Firehose), Petra Haden (that dog), Maria Taylor (Azure Ray), drummer Joey Waronker and more.

“Part of what I’ve taken from indie rock is the freedom to capture a time and place. Who’s around when you’re making a record? That’s your family. That’s your community.”

The version of Daniel Johnston’s “Speeding Motorcycle” will surely get a close listen as the singer-songwriter just passed away.

“It’s been powerful this past week to see so many people," says Lee, "sharing how Daniel’s music touched them so deeply. It’s one of those bittersweet elements when a beloved artist dies - we are given the opportunity to say out loud what we’ve thought privately so many times. It’s strange timing for me personally, as I had recorded my cover of ‘Speeding Motorcycle’ earlier this year, after performing it with Daniel on KCRW and at the LA show that night, which was one of the high points of my musical life. Climbing inside that song was like a celebration of everything that initially moved me about Daniel’s music and rock ‘n’ roll in general: the freedom, the melody, the wit, the artistic rebelliousness. So here it is for you to hear, oddly, a week after Daniel’s death. And I get the chance to say that I believe Daniel Johnston was amongst the greatest songwriters in American history.”

Hear it and the Breeders cover HERE.

In January of 2019, while touring with his duo Radnor & Lee (featuring the actor Josh Radnor of How I Met Your Mother fame), Lee found himself snowed in, trapped by the polar vortex in a lonely Chicago hotel room. Nothing to do, nowhere to go, Lee thought about his first trip to the city 25 years earlier when he was recording his solo debut, Grandpaw Would, with the producer Brad Wood for the Beastie Boys’ Grand Royal label.

“Chicago plays such a key role in my music history, because that’s where I went to make my first solo record. I met incredible artists like Liz Phair and Rebecca Gates and all these people who were so important to me at the time.”

Lee was 15 years old, but already a seasoned music veteran in his native Australia, where he had been fronting the alt-rock band Noise Addict (who’s first ever show at 14 years old was supporting Sonic Youth. The band would go on to support Fugazi, Pavement, Sebadoh, and more).

Among his fondest memories of that first trip to Chicago was spending hours at the city’s record stores. “Records were so expensive by the time they got imported to Australia, so I spent a lot of time flipping through the crates,” Lee offers. “I remember buying the first Fugazi record on that trip, a Superchunk singles compilation, Sebadoh vs. Helmet. It was a time when being a fan of music was the most dominant thing in my life, which is what happens when you’re that age.”

In 2019, the grown-up Ben Lee started working out the chords to “Web In Front” by Archers of Loaf - another prized piece of vinyl he picked up during that first trip. Using a small recording set-up he carries with him on the road, Lee recorded his own version of “Web In Front.”

After that song, he recorded another. And then another. And then more. Fugazi’s “Blueprint” followed by Guided By Voices’ “Goldheart Mountain Top Queen Directory” followed by Beat Happening’s “Godsend.” Soon, something resembling a record emerged from Lee’s reminiscences, an album with a shape and a thesis: Quarter Century Classix. He then took those hotel-room recordings back to his home in Los Angeles and gathered the small crew of friends to flesh them out.

Lee approached the record both as a fan who long ago memorized every lyric and as an artist who was an active participant in that scene, who saw these bands up close, who even opened for a few of them. As a result, Quarter Century Classix carries a lot more weight than your typical “covers album.” It’s an overview of a particularly vibrant era in indie rock, but it’s also an endeavor of personal archaeology. Lee burrows deep into these classix not only to see what makes them tick, but also to see how they make him tick. At heart, it’s closer to a musical memoir: a mixtape as statement of self, a means of connecting with his younger self. He says, “Within the course of these 13 songs, I discovered that the entire template for what I would explore musically was laid out at that time in my life. These songs truly touched me in the most profound way.”

In celebration of the release of Quarter Century Classix, Ben Lee will be performing a special show with Jon Brion at Largo in Los Angeles on Nov. 22 and will also appear at the City Vineyard in NYC on Dec. 1.

Ben Lee’s Quarter Century Classix will be available on compact disc, across digital retailers, Split Fluorescent Blue & Fluorescent Pink Colored Vinyl, Limited Edition Cassette Tape, and Sky Blue Colored Vinyl Limited to 300 copies available for pre-order now via NEW WEST RECORDS.

Midge Ure sets unique No. American 2020 tour dates; new career anthology out now

I had the pleasure of interviewing Midge in the 2013 and 2018 (see elsewhere on this blog), so I always look forward to his return to America. Read below for the latest news...

Grammy and Brit Award winning musician Midge Ure returns to the North American intimate venue circuit with his Songs, Questions and Answers Tour 2020. Direct from the UK leg of the tour, Midge will be playing alongside multi-instrumentalist Tony Solis, performing acoustic versions of his catalogue and taking questions.

There is plenty to talk about too while covering a 40 year professional career, Ultravox, Solo work, Band Aid, his Orchestrated album from 2017....and anything the audience can think of to ask him.

Midge Ure has also released Soundtrack 1978-2019 via Chrysalis Records. The 32-song collection encompasses four decades of Ure’s career. In addition to many Ultravox and Midge Ure solo tracks, this collection also features previously unreleased material. One of these songs is a new remix of 2014’s 'Dark Dark Night', co-written and performed with Moby.

The collection also features collaborations with Kate Bush (Sister And Brother), Sir George Martin (orchestral arrangement on All In One Day), former Japan member Mick Karn (After A Fashion), and Heaven 17’s Glenn Gregory (Personal Heaven).

The double CD version also comes with an accompanying DVD. The DVD features video promos from the Rich Kids and Midge’s solo work and collaborations. Later videos by his Band Electronica, and bonus documentaries.

Dashboard Confessional retrospective and tour in 2020

Celebrating 20 years, Dashboard Confessional announced their first-ever career-spanning compilation, The Best Ones Of The Best Ones, will be released on January 31, 2020. The album features selections from all seven studio albums, the So Impossible and The Drowning EPs, and the band’s platinum-certified MTV Unplugged performance.

Singer/songwriter Chris Carrabba — who now owns the majority of Dashboard Confessional’s master recordings (a notable rarity in the music industry) — will self-release the physical, double LP version of The Best Ones Of The Best Ones, along with digital distribution via AWAL. Pre-order The Best Ones Of The Best Ones in multiple formats and bundles now HERE.

Dashboard Confessional has also announced a 20th celebration tour that will begin early next year. The band will perform 2001’s The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most and 2003’s A Mark, A Mission, A Brand, A Scar in their entirety on subsequent nights in select cities — including New York, NY, and Los Angeles, CA — and include a mix of songs from both albums on all other dates. The Get Up Kids and Piebald will join as support on separate dates of the tour. General tickets are on-sale now.

Carrabba relaunched Dashboard Confessional’s official fan club and announced a new partnership with Reverb.com to sell the guitars, amps, effects pedals, and more that were used to write, record, and perform nearly every album. The Official Dashboard Confessional Reverb Shop will launch on Monday, September 23, and includes items such as three Guild acoustic guitars used to write and record The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most, as well as other personal favorites. To see a video of Carrabba talking about The Official Dashboard Confessional Reverb Shop, preview the gear that will be available on September 23, and sign up to be notified when the shop goes live, visit HERE.

“The fact that my music has had an effect on anybody’s life besides mine is so humbling, and one of the greatest parts of that has been getting to know the people who have become fans over the years,” Chris says. “Because the thing is that people can choose your band, but it doesn’t work the other way around—you don’t get to choose your fans. I always feel so incredibly lucky these are the fans who ended up choosing us.”

Digital collection of hard to find Peter Gabriel tracks out now

Flotsam and Jetsam, available now, is a collection of B-sides, remixes and rarities from across Peter Gabriel’s solo career.

Over 60 tracks are featured, mostly all of which have been previously released physically, either on 7”, 12” or CD singles, soundtrack or tribute albums, but, with a few exceptions, are being released digitally for the first time.

The collection – arranged chronologically - is split into three eras. The first, 1976-1985, covers the period from Peter first going solo to the end of his run of four self-titled solo albums.

It opens with a cover version of ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’, the first time Peter featured on a release after leaving Genesis. The second, 1986-1993, are Peter’s popstar years with music released around the albums ‘So’ and ‘Us’. The third era is 1994-2016 and features remixes from the ‘Up’ album, plus tracks used in various films and notable cover versions. It ends with Peter’s song ‘The Veil’, written especially for the Oliver Stone movie ‘Snowden’.

Across the collection are a handful of previously unreleased versions of songs, most notably, the extended version of ‘Slowburn’ (PG1), the full version of ‘Don’t Break This Rhythm’ (an edit featured as the B-side to Sledgehammer) and the tracks ‘Curtains (Broad Mix)’ and ‘Father, Son (Daniel Lanois and Richard Chappell Mix)’ both only previously available on the non-commercial Music Industry Trust Awards CD ‘Uscita’.

Ringo Starr news

Ringo Starr's 20th studio record, What’s My Name, is scheduled for release on Oct. 25 via UME. It is the latest in a series of records that Starr has produced in his home studio. The guest musicians this time include Paul McCartney, Joe Walsh, Edgar Winter, Dave Stewart, Benmont Tench, Steve Lukather, Nathan East, Colin Hay, Richard Page and more (full track and credit list below).

For Ringo, recording at home, known as Roccabella West, has become a welcome and productive way of life. “I don’t want to be in an old-fashioned recording studio anymore, really,” Starr explains. “I’ve had enough of the big glass wall and the separation. We are all together in here, whoever I invite over. This is the smallest club in town. And I love it, being at home, being able to say hi to Barb, it’s just been good for me and the music.”

Besides many familiar faces appearing on the album and in the credits, What’s My Name features new collaborator/songwriter Sam Hollander and has songs he has not written, co-written or in one case, even produced.

“Sam Hollander’s people got to Bruce Grakal, my lawyer, and said, “Sam would like to say hi to Ringo.” So I told Sam to come over. After we wrote a song together, “Thank God For Music.” Then Sam called and said, “I think I may have another song,” so I said, “Let me hear it.” He had written it all. He had written a song out of things I said in an interview in Rolling Stone. I loved the sentiment of it – he had one verse about spending too much time in hospitals, but I didn’t want to even sing that verse – the pity verse. Sam came over and I put the vocals on, and said, `You produce this one,’ but Sam said, “Well, you’re going to do drums.” So, I went in and played it through twice.” I like two takes. And he took “Better Days” away and did it.”

The new album’s title track and first single -- “What’s My Name” -- was written by a returning All-Starr Band member this past summer, Colin Hay, and turns a familiar chant from Ringo’s live shows into a rocker.

“This was Colin Hay’s fourth time in the All-Starr Band, and a friend told me that, unbeknownst to me, Colin wrote a song years ago called, “What’s My Name.” I said, “Bring it up to the house and let’s hear it.” Later I heard, Colin couldn’t find it! He’d written the song down six years ago and put it in this pile or that pile. But it ended up at the bottom of the drawer. So, Colin came over and played it for me, and I loved it. I loved the verses. I loved the sentiment. In all honesty, there’s not a lot of people who could get away with asking, “What’s my name?” in a song. If you’ve been to the show, you already know the title. I’m blessed that most things coming my way are peace and love. There are still always trials and tribulations. But I just feel in life, the sun shines this way. I’m blessed. I always have the same talk – an audience can be tortured. We give them everything we’ve got. We give each other everything we’ve got. And sometimes it’s not enough. But most nights it’s everything. I’ll play the best I can for you. And you play the best you can for me. That’s all I can ask.”

Ringo recorded “Grow Old With Me” with noted record producer Jack Douglas, who had produced John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s Double Fantasy album.

“Jack asked if I ever heard The Bermuda Tapes, John’s demos from that time,” Ringo recalls. “And I had never heard all this. The idea that John was talking about me in that time before he died, well, I’m an emotional person. And I just loved this song. I sang it the best that I could. I do well up when I think of John this deeply. And I’ve done my best. We’ve done our best. The other good thing is that I really wanted Paul to play on it, and he said yes. Paul came over and he played bass and sings a little bit on this with me. So John’s on it in a way. I’m on it and Paul’s on it. It’s not a publicity stunt. This is just what I wanted. And the strings that Jack arranged for this track, if you really listen, they do one line from “Here Comes The Sun.” So in a way, it’s the four of us.”

Opening track “Gotta Get Up To Get Down” was co-written with his brother in law and long-time musical partner Joe Walsh. “I’ve been making music with Joe long before we became brothers, “Ringo said. “And we were having dinner with Klaus Voorman months ago, and for whatever, I said, “Well, you’ve got to get up to get down.” Joe and looked at each other and said, “We know that’s the title, so let’s write a song about it. “That’s how it is. Edgar Winter’s part on this track is just incredible. Edgar’s always incredible, but he out does himself in my book.”

Additional tracks include: “It’s Not Love That You Want;” “Magic” co- written with his long time All-Starr Steve Lukather “I wrote that with Steve Lukather, who is magic. I made a mistake of telling Steve, “You’re my last best friend,” and so that how we’re live now. And he’s a beautiful guy. He sometimes puts out a hard shell, but he is so soulful. We work well together. And he’s even better when he’s not playing a thousand notes a minute – which he can. He’s the man. I love the man. Don’t tell him. Sometimes Steve’s so happy playing with me, I say, “You’re having too much fun.”

A cover of the classic “Money (That’s What I Want);” “Send Love, Spread Peace” and “Life Is Good,” which was inspired by the book written by the optimistic apparel company of the same name founded by Bert & John Jacobs. “I went to receive my honor at the Paley Center last year and I was wearing a hat that said, “Life is Good.” I liked the sentiment. And the guys from the Life is Good organization sent me t-shirts and a book, and Gary and I noticed that. And that’s how we wrote it. If we have a title, we just go.”

In the best way possible, drumming remains Ringo’s madness, and keeps him moving forward in time. As Starr remembers affectionately, “When I was a teenager, my mom always said, “Son, you’re at your happiest when you’re playing.” And it’s still true to this day. I’m blessed...I’ve been putting together All-Starr bands for 30 years. And it’s still a thrill.”

Starr also has a new book coming out October 15, Another Day In the Life (Genesis Publications) reflects his love of music, travel and nature and shows us the world as seen through Ringo’s eyes. Originally published as a limited edition, this hardback version will be widely available and can be pre-ordered here.

We had such good times with BBMAK, from touring with *NSYNC to performing on The Tonight Show to being a part of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and we thought maybe that was enough. But when we got together again, the magic was still there, so much so that we started writing music again like not a moment had passed. The result is Powerstation, which is coming out in October and we literally can’t wait for you to hear it. We’ve been absolutely blown away by the love, support and excitement from everyone who has come to see us at our shows or written to us online to tell us how much it means to you that we’re together again.” Christian, Mark & Ste

The song marks the band’s first new music since the August 2018 release of the three-song Lake Effect Kid EP, a love letter to their hometown city of Chicago that featured the full version of the band’s previously unreleased title track demo along with two new songs “City in A Garden” and “Super Fade.” In January, Fall Out Boy was featured on the gold-certified track “I’ve Been Waiting,” a collaboration from Lil Peep and iLoveMakonnen. Multi-platinum, GRAMMY award-winning Weezer’s new single “The End of the Game,” produced by Suzy Shinn, will be included on their forthcoming 14th studio album, entitled Van Weezer, due out in May 2020. The inspiration for this album derives from the deepest roots of Weezer - metal! What has metal got to do with Weezer, you ask? In his earliest years, Rivers was a huge KISS fan; Brian was a big Black Sabbath fan; Pat worshipped at the altar of Van Halen and Rush; Scott loved Slayer and Metallica. The last time this vein of harder rock was mined by Weezer was on their much-loved 2002 album Maladroit; Van Weezer is primed to take that album's sonics many steps further courtesy of producer Suzy Shinn. "The End of the Game" is Weezer's first new song since this year’s release of Weezer (The Black Album), as well as their covers album, Weezer (The Teal Album), whose streaming numbers have surpassed 100 million. Pre-order the album Van Weezer here. Listen to their single “The End of the Game” here.

The Damned compilation coming in November

British punk band The Damned are set to release a new retrospective album called Black is the Night via BMG on Nov. 1.

In 2018, the pioneering group worked with legendary producer Tony Visconti for the new studio effort Evil Spirits.

“It was very intense work because we were putting in easily a month's worth of work in nine days,” says Dave Vanian. “Visconti was more of a quiet individual who sits back and then opens his mouth and makes total sense with what he says. It was a joy to work with him. We had a job to do and we got on with it. It was a very pleasurable experience. There's a lot of very high backing vocals that we did together and only Tony and I could actually reach the notes. He's on a lot of the backing vocals, all the high-pitched vocals that sound like a lady wailing away or something, it's not, it's Tony!”

Who would have thought chaos kings The Damned would still be around in 2019, 43 years into their career, still defiantly independent, still masters of their own domain?

“It'd been ten years since the last album. That's ridiculous isn't it?” Dave exclaims: “You think about 1977 and they'd be saying 'Have you made an album?', 'Yeah, we made one a couple of months ago'. 'Well, you need to make a new one'. For us it's very important to keep pushing forward. It's what drives me on. I always find it a bit soul-destroying thinking that I'd spend years making the same music.”

Designer Phil Smee was chosen to create the career spanning album's gothic artwork. Smee has worked with the band numerous times throughout their long-lasting career, as well as creating legendary designs for Motörhead, Elton John and Madness, amongst many others.

Smee commented: “I loved working with the band back in the 80’s and I like to think we came up with some iconic designs. Certainly, I see the many Damned logos I came up with still used on t-shirts to this day. I’ve not cut corners with this new album, even setting all the sleeve copy by hand, which took me back to ‘The Black Album’ which I hand-lettered with a shaky pen. The Damned are a totally unique band, I’ve always loved everything they’ve done. I still get excited about every design project that comes along, but I was particularly pleased to be asked to work on The Damned’s ‘Black is the Night’ album.”

The band play select US shows this month, as well as Madison Square Garden with The Original Misfits and Rancid on Oct. 19.
