Sugarcult marks 20 years of 'Start Static' with expanded reissue

I was a big fan of this band back in the 2000s, having interviewed them and caught them live several times. I look forward to hearing this...

In August 2001, SoCal rockers Sugarcult emerged onto the scene with their debut album Start Static. It spawned three hit alt-rock radio singles, "Bouncing Off the Walls," "Pretty Girl (The Way)," and "Stuck in America." Now, two decades later, Craft Recordings commemorates this enduring favorite with a deluxe 20th anniversary vinyl and digital reissue.

Set for an October 8 street date and available for pre-order, the vinyl edition of Start Static (20th-Anniversary Edition) will feature the original album — newly remastered by the GRAMMY®-winning engineer, Paul Blakemore — plus three special bonus tracks: an early demo of "Say I'm Sorry," a live version of "Bouncing Off the Walls," plus a spirited cover of Elvis Costello & The Attraction's "No Action."

The album comes housed in a gatefold jacket, featuring sculpted emboss printing and updated liner notes from the band. Fans can also find a special variant of the LP — pressed on clear vinyl and limited to 500 units — exclusively on Sugarcult's website and at Craft Recordings' online store.

The digital edition, also available October 8, features an additional, previously unreleased live version of the band's hit single, "Stuck in America." Fans can preview the extended album by streaming or downloading the cover of "No Action" and "Bouncing Off the Walls (Live)."

Formed in Santa Barbara, CA, in 1998, Sugarcult was comprised of Tim Pagnotta (vocals/guitar), Airin Older (bass/vocals), Marko DeSantis (guitar), and Ben Davis (drums). 

After independently releasing two demos and two EPs, the quartet was signed to Ultimatum Music, which connected them with producer Matt Wallace (Maroon 5, Faith No More, The Replacements) to work on their debut full-length.

Start Static went on to sell more than 300,000 copies, while the band embarked on nearly three years of non-stop touring. In addition to playing the main stage of Warped Tour and appearing at festivals like Glastonbury (UK), Summer Sonic (Japan), and Soundwaves (Australia), the group joined Green Day's American Idiot tour in the U.S. and Japan, as well as Blink 182's European arena tour. They would go on to headline hundreds of shows across North America, Europe, and Japan.

Multiple songs off Start Static, meanwhile, could be heard on popular shows like MTV's Laguna Beach and in films like Van Wilder (the stars of which, Ryan Reynolds and Tara Reid, appeared in the music video for "Bouncing Off the Walls.)"

Following Start Static, Sugarcult went on to release two more acclaimed albums (2004's Palm Trees and Power Lines and 2006's Lights Out), and two DVDs before embarking on an extended hiatus in 2008. Since then, each band member has excelled in a variety of fields within the music industry.

Tim Pagnotta is an award-winning, multi-platinum-selling songwriter and producer who has collaborated with the likes of Weezer, Blink 182, Neon Trees, Walk the Moon, and Elle King. Airin Older went on to become a founding member of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and joined British alt-rock group thenewno2, featuring Dhani Harrison. Marko DeSantis is now a professor of music business, artist development and artist coaching at Los Angeles College of Music, Musicians Institute College of Music and Citrus College. He has also enjoyed several DJ residencies in the U.S. and Japan and has been featured as a guest speaker and panelist at SXSW, UCLA, and Sonos LEAD, among others. Ben Davis, meanwhile, enjoys a successful career writing and producing music for film, TV and commercials.

Local H go the covers route on 'Awesome Quarantine Mix Tape #3'

Shortly after the release of Local H's Steve Albini-produced album Lifers in 2020, the global pandemic happened. After facing tour cancellations around the world, the longstanding Illinois rock duo - best known for the top 5 alt-rock hit from 1996 "Bound for the Floor" - 

became one of the first bands to embrace the drive-in concert experience in addition to live streaming numerous shows from their practice space.

While under quarantine, Scott Lucas and Ryan Harding recorded their third covers album, Awesome Quarantine Mix Tape #3. The collection, due Oct. 8 via Brutal Panda, features a mix of their influences, contemporaries, and favorite artists.

The Verve Pipe pull musical 'Threads'

Multiplatinum alternative rock band THE VERVE PIPE are known for radio hit songs including the 1997 #1 rock single “The Freshmen,” “Photograph,” “Hero,” and “Never Let You Down,” plus “Colorful” which was featured in the 2001 feature film Rock Star.

Founder/lead singer and main songwriter BRIAN VANDER ARK has returned with youthful co-writer and backing vocalist CHANNING LEE on the band’s first new album in four years, THREADS, scheduled for release on November 5 (CD & digital), March 11 (vinyl).

“This song is about how we overprotect ourselves,” shares VANDER ARK about the single’s meaning. “It’s about the armor that we wear after a particularly bad breakup. We deny ourselves the opportunity to fall in love again, fearful we will relive the pain. And yet it can’t be helped. Love happens again and again, until we finally get it right.”

VANDER ARK further comments on how the concept behind THREADS came together stating: “The inspiration for the album started when we learned of an old Japanese legend that said we all hold one end of a red thread of fate. It symbolizes the thin artery that originates in the heart. It flows down to the hand and then out into the metaphysical world. These threads are connected to other people who will have an important story in each other’s lives. They stretch and bend; they never break.”

“We also wanted to explore the concept of fate—what can be comforting can also be confining.” VANDER ARK continues to ask, “How do we know if fate is something we wait to find us, or something we create for ourselves?

“The symbolism of 'Threads' weaves in and out of each song, as we tell these stories that make up the good and bad of our lives - love, heartbreak, abuse, addiction, hope, revenge and that constant yearning for the unknown.

"And our stories continue. We feel the constant pull of our threads, from our hearts through our hands. It is what keeps us forever reaching.”

Rod Stewart returns with 'The Tears of Hercules'

On November 12, Sir Rod Stewart’s rekindled love of songwriting grows stronger on his 31st studio album, THE TEARS OF HERCULES. It’s Stewart’s fourth new album of original songs since 2013 when he reconnected with his songwriting muse to record Time, the chart-topping album which entered the Top 10 in the US and ten countries worldwide, including #1 in the U.K., where it’s been certified platinum double-platinum.

For his latest, Stewart wrote nine of the album’s 12 songs, including the first single, “One More Time,” available today on all digital and streaming services. The song “Touchline” is dedicated to Stewart's father, who taught him and his brothers to love football, a tradition Rod has passed down to his sons. To make THE TEARS OF HERCULES, Stewart once again worked with Kevin Savigar, the keyboardist-songwriter-composer who has co-produced Stewart’s last three studio albums: Time (2013), Another Country (2015), and Blood Red Roses (2018).

Their long-running collaboration began in 1978 when Stewart invited Savigar to join his studio and touring band. In addition to “One More Time,” they also co-wrote the tracks “Hold On” and “All My Days.” Stewart co-wrote “Born To Boogie (A Tribute To Mark Bolan)” with Emerson Swinford, the guitarist in his band. Stewart, Savigar, and Swinford share songwriting credit on “I Can’t Imagine."

For the album’s title track, Rod chose a ballad written by Marc Jordan. Through the years, Stewart has recorded other songs written by Jordan, including “Rhythm Of My Heart” (#5 U.S./#3 U.K.) from Vagabond Heart and “This” from his gold-certified album, A Spanner in the Works. Additional covers include Stewart’s take on Soul Brother Six’s “Some Kind Of Wonderful,” and his rendition of Johnny Cash’s “These Are My People.”

The two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee plans to play some of the new songs live next year during his North American Tour. It will start on July 1, 2022, in Fort Worth, Texas, and includes 19 shows. Visit rodstewart.com for ticket information.

Jason Isbell shepherds Georgia charity album

Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and musician Jason Isbell and his band the 400 Unit will release a special new covers album, Georgia Blue, October 15 with all proceeds benefitting three non-profit organizations: Black Voters Matter, Fair Fight and Georgia STAND-UP.

Set for release via Isbell’s own Southeastern Records, the album is now available for pre-order HERE with additional information on all three organizations.

Created to celebrate Georgia’s role in the 2020 election, the record consists of new versions of thirteen songs with ties to the state, including tracks originally recorded by Georgia natives R.E.M., Drivn’ N’ Cryin’, James Brown, Cat Power, Precious Bryant, Otis Redding, The Black Crowes, Indigo Girls, Now It’s Overhead, Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Allman Brothers Band and Vic Chesnutt.

I will admit my motivations were a bit selfish. For years, I’ve been looking for an excuse to record these songs with my band and some friends. The songs on this album are some of my favorite Georgia-related songs…We have roots and blues and R&B, so we enlisted some brilliant artists to help us pull off songs by Precious Bryant, James Brown and Gladys Knight. Colin Blunstone of The Zombies to reissue 1971 solo album in expanded version

Originally released in November 1971, One Year is the debut solo album from The Zombies’ frontman Colin Blunstone, recorded over the course of “one year” following the band’s break-up and the posthumous success of their single “Time of the Season.”

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the album, Sundazed Music will release a double LP edition on November 5. The second LP, That Same Year, features Colin singing his own compositions, many accompanied solely by his acoustic guitar, and gives a deeper introspective look into that time in his life. The double LP is now available for pre-order and the previously unreleased track, “I Won’t Let You Down” from That Same Year, which features fellow Zombie Rod Argent on piano, is available today at all DSPs; listen here.

Coinciding with the anniversary release, Colin will join forces with composer Joe Wong (Russian Doll, The Midnight Gospel, Master of None) to recreate One Year live on stage in its entirety for the first time, with exclusive shows at Los Angeles’ Regent Theater (November 2) and New York City’s Gramercy Theatre (November 8). Wong, who will open the show and then accompany Colin for One Year, has recruited a 20-piece ensemble of top musicians, featuring drummer Joey Waronker (Atoms for Peace, Roger Waters, Beck, REM), Mary Timony (Helium, Ex Hex), Crisanta Baker (Lo Moon), and a chamber orchestra including members of the Orchid Quartet (leading up to the Anniversary, the LA-based string quartet will also be releasing a series of One Year tribute videos, the first with guest vocals from The Voice finalist India Carney, debuting September 17).

Included in The Guardian’s “1,000 Albums to Hear Before You Die” list, One Year was primarily recorded in Abbey Road Studios, and co-produced by Colin’s former Zombies bandmates Rod Argent and Chris White. The album finds Colin backed by Rod’s then-newly-formed outfit Argent (Rod alongside Russ Ballard, Jim Rodford & Bob Henrit) and Chris Gunning’s string arrangements.

There's a bossa nova cover of Tim Hardin’s “Misty Roses,” Colin’s own lament “Caroline Goodbye” with the Argent personnel accompanied by string arrangements from Rod Argent & Tony Visconti, along with the full string-backed version of Denny Laine’s “Say You Don’t Mind,” which became a chart hit in the UK.

One Year has gone on to touch a diverse array of artists, ranging from Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, who called it “a gorgeous example of classic British pop music…very personal, very sophisticated in its sentiment” (NME), to Neil Tenant of Pet Shop Boys, who cites Colin as “the missing link between Dusty Springfield and Nick Drake” and hails One Year as “an incredibly romantic album, which is why it's been with me such a long time” (The Guardian). 

According to Steve Berkowitz, the late Jeff Buckley’s Executive Producer at Columbia Records, “Part of the reason that Grace has those beautiful and interesting strings, by Jeff Buckley and Karl Berger, is because Jeff was affected by having heard Colin Blunstone and the way they wrote the strings on that record, particularly on the incredibly beautiful ‘Caroline Goodbye.’”

For the Anniversary edition, Colin penned the liner notes that fill the gatefold jacket along with unseen photos from that year. The notes go track by track through One Year along with background on That Same Year. This period marked the point where Colin came into his own as a songwriter, having previously only contributed two songs to The Zombies. This is evidenced by the tracks on That Same Year, fourteen demo versions of Colin’s compositions that were being considered for One Year, recently unearthed from co-producer Chris White’s archives. Colin accompanies himself on acoustic guitar, with help on some tracks from Rod Argent on piano and the late English singer-songwriter Duncan Browne on classical guitar.

Only three of these songs graced One Year, “Caroline Goodbye,” “Though You Are Far Away” and “Let Me Come Closer To You”, while “Too Much Too Soon Last Night” found life as a B-side, and “I’ve Always Had You” made his second album, Ennismore. Beyond these early versions of familiar songs you will find nine completely unheard compositions that remained lost until now; including “Sing Your Own Song,” a protest after reading about his own death in Rolling Stone.

About Colin Blunstone

Predominantly known as the frontman for The Zombies, Colin’s solo career began in earnest in 1971 with One Year on Epic Records, from which the hit single “Say You Don’t’ Mind” was taken. Two more albums on Epic followed, Ennismore and Journey, which spawned the hits, “I Don’t Believe In Miracles” and “How Can We Dare To Be Wrong.” This was followed by a spell living in California where he signed for Elton John’s label, Rocket Records and released three critically acclaimed albums, Planes, Never Even Thought and Late Nights in Soho.

Returning to the UK, Colin supplied the vocals for Dave Stewart’s hit version of “What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted” followed by further hits with Smokey Robinson’s “Tracks Of My Tears” and The Alan Parsons Project’s “Old And Wise”. These tracks were followed by three further albums, Greatest Hits, Echo Bridge and The Light Inside, before Colin decided the time was right to play live again where he was joined in 1999 by fellow Zombies founding member, Rod Argent. This led to two decades of touring and recording with the new incarnation of The Zombies, including their 2015 Billboard-charting album Still Got That Hunger and 2019 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Colin still found the time to release and tour two solo albums, The Ghost of You and Me and On The Air Tonight, and is now back in the studio with The Zombies recording their planned 2022 release.

Radiohead news

Radiohead will put out Kid A mnesia, a multiple format triple-album release on November 5 via XL Recordings. It collects the band's fourth and fifth albums alongside the debut of a newly compiled third disc titled Kid A mnesiae. Exclusive to this release, Kid A mnesiae is comprised of unearthed material culled from the Kid A/Amnesiac sessions.

Along with alternate versions and elements of Kid A and Amnesiac album tracks and B-Sides, Kid A mnesiae features the never-before-heard "If You Say the Word” (available now as a digital single) and a previously unreleased studio recording of "Follow Me Around.”

KID A MNESIA EXHIBITION is an upside-down digital/analog universe created from Thom Yorke and Stanley Donwood’s original artwork and audio design by Nigel Godrich. It commemorates the coming of age of Radiohead’s records, Kid A and Amnesiac.
