Styx news

Styx - comprised of
James “JY” Young (lead vocals, guitars), Tommy Shaw (lead vocals, guitars), Chuck Panozzo (bass, vocals), Todd Sucherman (drums, percussion), Lawrence Gowan (lead vocals, keyboards) and Ricky Phillips (bass, guitar, vocals) - will release their new album 'Crash of the Crown' on June 18 via Alpha Dog 2T/UMe.

Formats include clear vinyl, black vinyl, CD, and digital. Pre-order here and at Styxworld.com.

The title track can be streamed or downloaded. Listen to the new song hereIt is the first song to feature three lead vocalists.

“I’m always looking for the one different thing we can do and still have it be Styx,” Gowan says, “and that’s the song I’m most proud of. The beauty of it is that it’s the culmination of all our talents crammed together into one song, Abbey Road style. I also got to use some gear I never thought I’d have the chance to play on a Styx record like Tommy’s Hammond B3 organ, my Minimoog, and my Mellotron.”

Efforts to record the album began at Shaw’s home studio in Nashville during the fall of 2019, with Gowan — Styx's vocalist since 1999 following founding member Dennis DeYoung's exit - in the room together with Shaw and the album’s producer, Will Evankovich.

But the global pandemic changed how many of the band’s home-and-away recording sessions ultimately had to be socially distanced. Safety precautions took precedent for all involved bandmembers and production crew with quarantining and testing required before any one of them could travel to Shaw’s home for more work on the album.

Of those who made the trek to Shaw's in Nashville was original STYX bassist Chuck Panozzo - who, along with his late twin brother, drummer John Panozzo and DeYoung, formed the initial nucleus of STYX when they began jamming together in their basement on the south side of Chicago in 1961.

“I’m constantly amazed at how Tommy’s songwriting continues to connect with the social consciousness that spans across generations,” says Chuck, who plays on “Our Wonderful Lives” and “Lost at Sea.”

“Both he and Will have been able to tap into the core elements of the human condition, which is something that’s not going to change that much in 50 years — or even 500 years. That’s why STYX remains relevant after all this time, because we’re part of the human condition.”

Says Shaw, “We’ve never been a protest band. We’re more like a gospel caravan trying to send out positive messages wherever we go...i
n order to share those positive messages, you have to look at what the problems are first to figure out all the ways you can help make sure everything’s going to be alright. That’s a very important part of how we do what we do.”

'Crash' is the follow-up to 2017's The Mission.

On Record Store Day (June 12), the band will release The Same Stardust EP on blue 180-gram 12-inch vinyl only, which will feature two new songs on Side One (“The Same Stardust” and “Age of Entropia”), as well as five live performances on Side Two of some classic hits previously heard during their “STYX Fix” livestreams during the pandemic on their official YouTube page, including “Mr. Roboto,” “Man In The Wilderness,” “Miss America,” “Radio Silence,” and “Renegade.”

In touring news, Styx and Collective Soul hit the road for their first-ever multiple city tour in June. Styx had previously announced their return to Las Vegas with a three-night sold-out engagement at The Venetian Theatre inside The Venetian Resort Las Vegas on September 24, 25, and 26, which will include an exclusive set list and new stage production. All-star tribute to Pink Floyd’s 'Wish You Were Here' album

Pink Floyd’s 1975 album, Wish You Were Here is a musically and emotionally complex tribute to the band’s former leader, vocalist Syd Barrett, whose deteriorating mental health had caused the band to oust him in 1968. The album has become a touchstone for a generation of artists who sought to achieve the synthesis of multi-part suites, ballads and melodic rockers that Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason realized on this album.

Now, an all-star lineup of rock and metal musicians have gathered to recreate it. Still Wish You Were Here - due May 28 via Cleopatra Records - includes performances from keyboardist Rick Wakeman (YES), Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice, Rock Hall of Fame nominee Todd Rundgren, ex-Queensrÿche vocalist Geoff Tate, guitarist Joe Satriani, Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie, bassist Bootsy Collins, The Damned’s Rat Scabies, PiL’s Jah Wobble and more.

Still Wish You Were Here will be available on both CD in a six-panel deluxe digipak and a gatefold vinyl in a variety of colors. Pre-order the album: https://orcd.co/still_wish_you_were

David Bowie film news

On June 29, Shout! Factory will reissue 1978 black comedy "Just a Gigolo" on Blu-ray for the first time. The film will also be available on DVD, on digital and on demand the same day.

The drama starring David Bowie. Kim Novak and Marlene Dietrich (in her final role) has been newly remastered from original sources, presenting the film for the first time ever in high definition. The release comes complete with a 32-page booklet and with bonus features including The Making of Gigolo with producer/writer Joshua Sinclair and assistant to the director Rory MacLean, as well as audio commentary with Rory MacLean. Fans can pre-order their copies from shoutfactory.com now.

Paul von Przygodski (David Bowie), a young Prussian gentleman, arrives in the trenches in time to be caught in the final explosion of the Great War. After recuperating in a military hospital, where he is mistaken for a French hero, he returns to Berlin. His family home has been turned into a boarding house, his father (Rudolf Schündler) is paralyzed, and his mother (Maria Schell) is working in the Turkish baths.

Attempting to find a new purpose, his childhood friend, Cilly (Sydne Rome), abandons him for fame and fortune; his former commanding officer, Captain Kraft (David Hemmings), tries to persuade him to join his right-wing movement and a widow, Helga von Kaiserling (Kim Novak), briefly seduces him with the finer things in life.

In a society where the individual comes first and anyone can be bought, he is recruited by Baroness von Semering (Marlene Dietrich) as one in her regiment of gigolos.

The cynical and decadent world of entertaining rich widows leads an increasingly disillusioned Paul to a poignant, chilling end.

Among the artists performing jazz and cabaret songs on the soundtrack are The Manhattan Transfer, the Village People (!) and Dietrich on the title track. Bowie himself contributed a piece of music to the film, "Revolutionary Song," which was played by a band called The Rebels.

Bonus Features:

32-Page Booklet
The Making of Gigolo with Producer/Writer Joshua Sinclair and Assistant to the Director Rory MacLean
Audio Commentary with Rory MacLean

Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real detail 'A Few Stars Apart'

Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real’s next album, A Few Stars Apart, will be released June 11 on Fantasy Records and is now available for pre-order. In advance of the release, the album’s first single, “Perennial Bloom (Back To You),” is out today—listen/share HERE.

Helmed by Grammy Award winning producer Dave Cobb, the album was inspired by the stillness Nelson found while riding out the beginning of the pandemic with his family in Texas and was recorded with the full band live on eight-track tape over three weeks at Nashville’s historic RCA Studio A. The eleven songs reveal what it means to come home again, to be still, and to find community—and yourself.

“I’m from what one might say is the ultimate road family—I’ve been on the road my entire life,” shares Nelson. “I’ve never been anywhere longer than three months, and suddenly here we are, the four of us together. And thank god we were together. I can’t remember the last time we had that much time together as a family. We had a lot of really important bonding that happened during that time. And I have to say, as terrible as the pandemic has been in so many ways, for my inner peace, I was able to take a lot of good from this time. I was able to pause and reflect.”

He continues, “It took me a really long time to come back to the home in my heart. In a physical sense, that’s Texas and Hawaii. But in a spiritual sense as well—I think I finally decided not to run from who I am and who I am destined to be.First and foremost, that’s a songwriter. That’s what this record means to me. There’s a story being told through the whole record. A story about connection and coming home.”

Based in Texas and Hawaii, Promise of the Real is: Lukas Nelson (lead vocals, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, piano), Anthony LoGerfo (drums, percussion, tambourine), Corey McCormick (bass guitar, upright bass, Mellotron, vocals), Tato Melgar (percussion) and Logan Metz (piano, Wurlitzer, B3 organ, lap steel, banjo, Mellotron, vocals).

Since their debut over a decade ago, the acclaimed band have toured relentlessly playing countless sold-out one-night shows and festivals around the world and occasionally serving as Neil Young’s road band.

Nelson also co-produced the music for 2018’s lauded A Star Is Born film in addition to appearing in the film with the band and went on to win a BAFTA Award for Best Original Music and a GRAMMY Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media for his work.
