Out now: Peter Gabriel digital live album from WOMAD Festival '82

It was a simple idea; to create a festival out of all the brilliant music and art made all over the world, stuff made outside of the mainstream – music that wasn’t getting on the radio and was even harder to find in record stores.

The very first WOMAD Festival took place at the 240-acre Bath and West Showground, Somerset over the weekend of July 16–18, 1982. With the dream ‘not to sprinkle world music around a rock festival, but to prove that these great artists could be headliners in their own right’, the three days and five stages played host to 60 bands from over 20 countries; a line-up that included The Drummers of Burundi, Pigbag, Salsa de Hoy, Simple Minds, Musicians of the Nile, Echo and the Bunnymen, Prince Nico Mbarga, Rip, Rig and Panic, The Beat and many more.

“I remember this gig well,” says Peter Gabriel. “We played a mix of old and brand-new material. I would normally be very nervous about playing some of this stuff for the first time, however my mind was very preoccupied with the running of our very first WOMAD festival and the potential financial disaster that it was heading towards.

Because WOMAD was unique in its focus on music and art from around the world, and mixing it with up with rock and jazz, no-one knew how many people might turn up and we had seriously overestimated our appeal. But those that had decided to check out WOMAD and its weird and wonderful lineup were open-minded, bold and curious - a great audience.

It was a landmark and edgy gig for me both personally and musically and brings back lots of memories.”

Across the three days ‘an evening concert series’ took place in the Showering Pavilion on the festival site. On the Friday night that concert featured Tian Jin (a song and dance troupe from China), Simple Minds and, with a ‘special festival set of non-album material’, Peter Gabriel.

Live at WOMAD 1982 is a recording of that Friday night concert. The non-album material in question are seven of the eight songs that would make up the album Peter Gabriel 4. An album that wouldn’t be released for a further two months.

On-stage, Peter is joined by David Rhodes (guitar), John Giblin (bass), Larry Fast (synthesisers). Jerry Marotta (drums), Peter Hammill (guitar, vocals) and “the wonderful Bristol-based drum and dance group,” Ekomé (drums, percussion).

“We wanted to show that wherever you were born, whatever colour or language, whatever religious or sexual persuasion, powerful passionate and joyful work would have a warm welcome in WOMAD.

At the beginning, most music industry professionals told us that we had no chance of making this dream work, we had all the wonderful naïve misguided optimism of the young, and were convinced that we would prove all the cynics wrong. However, at the end of the first festival, it was clear we had an artistic success, but not a financial one… but that’s for another story.”

Peter Gabriel’s Live a WOMAD 1982 takes us back to not only the birth of a festival – one that has now hosted more than 160 editions in 27 countries - but also to the premiere of an album with songs, like The Rhythm of the Heat, San Jacinto and Shock the Monkey, that have become central to the Gabriel canon. More than just a live album, Live at WOMAD 1982 is a pivotal moment, available now for the very first time.

Cher's '02 farewell tour album to get vinyl debut reissue in Spetember

Cher will reissue her concert album, The (First) Farewell Tour, on 2LP Vinyl and streaming platforms for the first time on Sept. 26 via Warner Records. The exclusive physical edition will be pressed on hot pink and purple 2LP vinyl.

Cher heralds its arrival by sharing the live recording of “All I Really Want Do.” The Bob Dylan penned song was her first solo hit single in the Summer of 1965. Listen HERE and watch the live video HERE.

The newly remastered collection features three tracks, “Save Up All Your Tears,” “We All Sleep Alone” and “Different Kind of Love Song,” which were previously only included on the EMMY® Award-winning special and multiplatinum concert film Live! The Farewell Tour.

During 2002, the Academy® Award-winning and GRAMMY® Award-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Fame® Inductee and Kennedy Center® Honoree embarked on Living Proof: The Farewell Tour, circling the globe for 325 shows. 

The show made history as Cher achieved the Guinness World Record for the “Highest Grossing Tour by a Female Artist” at the time. She chronicled this run with Live! The Farewell Tour and accompanying record of the same name and captured her performance at American Airlines Arena in Miami, FL on November 7, 2002. The album hit shelves on August 26, 2003, and it was only available on CD… until now.

22 years since its initial release, The Farewell Tour finally makes its first appearance on DSPs and vinyl. It consists of the original 18 songs in addition to boasting three bonus tracks: “Save Up All Your Tears,” “We All Sleep Alone,” and “Different Kind of Love Song.” 

Last year, Cher revealed the career-spanning Forever as a special double vinyl package and one CD configuration. She accompanied it with the digital release of Forever Fan Edition. She was also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame® and capped the year off with her autobiography, CHER: The Memoir, Part One, which held the #1 spot on The New York Times Bestseller List.

Blink, the new album from Grammy-winning production and songwriting duo Bob Moses, is set for release on October 17 via AWAL. The album follows 2022’s The Silence In Between whose lead single “Love Brand New” secured the number one chart spot at Alternative radio.

Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance of Bob Moses wrote their fourth studio from opposite coasts (Howie in Los Angeles, Vallance in New York), trading demos through Dropbox and Discord, building ideas from keyboard riffs and drum loops, before ultimately meeting up in various cities including their own, Toronto, and Vancouver to flesh out songs as a unit together in the studio.

This shift allowed them to work at their own pace and even surprise each other — a feat considering the strength of their bond, forged from years of working side by side. It also required them to trust their instincts and commit to ideas much sooner than they had in the past, preserving songs in their purest, instinctual form. That fragmented process, never rooted in one place or moment, further deepened BLINK’s ephemeral spirit.

“The album’s like a question: How do you reconcile the desire to have a meaningful life with the realization that it’s gone in an instant, that you can't hold onto things for too long?” Howie says. “It wasn’t a conscious choice, but the way we made this record fits that idea, and maybe that’s why we've touched on it: it’s a phase in our lives where we’re doing everything in moments.”

Since forming in New York City in 2012, Bob Moses have earned acclaim for their blend of house music and pop. Made up of Vancouver-bred musicians/producers Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance, the duo delivered their debut album Days Gone By in 2015 to widespread critical attention.

Midnight Til Morning, from Netflix's 'Building the Band,' reveal first songs, tour dates

I was hoping these guys would win the Building the Band reality series competition because I thought they were the strongest ones, but as music history has shown on American Idol, you don't always have to win it to have a promising, successful career. Midnight Til Morning is a four-piece group formed on the current Top 10 Global Netflix series Building the Band. Their highly anticipated debut single “Bye” is available now HERE across all major streaming platforms.

Co-written by Benson Boone, Amy Allen, Scott Harris, Elie Rizk, and the band members themselves, “Bye” was produced by Rizk alongside Grammy-nominated JT Daly. 

Later this month Midnight Til Morning will unveil the official music video for “Bye,” directed by Josh Harris.

Midnight Til Morning is comprised of four singers from the U.S. and Australia: Conor Smith (22, Central Coast, NSW), Mason Watts (25, Toowoomba, QLD), Shane Appell (22, Upstate New York), and Zach Newbould (22, Boston, MA).

Since their formation, the group has seen explosive growth across TikTok, Instagram, and streaming platforms — with fans worldwide drawn to their sound, story, and brotherhood. As a surprise addition to their debut single, the band also dropped a special release for fans titled “Ghost of Us” — co-written with Benny Morrell and Robby De Sa, and produced by De Sa.

Out now digitally: 'For The People,' the new album by Dropkick Murphys; physical formats to come in the fall

Dropkick Murphys’ new album For The People is available for download and streaming via the band’s Dummy Luck Music/Play It Again Sam, with the LP and CD editions featuring five bonus tracks out October 10. 

The album cover was created by renowned social/political artist Shepard Fairey's design firm Studio Number One, and the album was produced and mixed by longtime Dropkick Murphys collaborator Ted Hutt.

“Who’ll Stand With Us?,” the album’s first single, is a call for unity, a return to sanity, and a look at what – and who – is really dividing us. The music video for “Who’ll Stand With Us?” was directed by Jon Vulpine and depicts the disturbing reality of people disappearing in the United States. MeidasTouch Network, the U.S.-based pro-democracy news podcast (and the #1 podcast in the U.S. and Canada), took note, posted the video, and has shown ongoing support for the band’s efforts to stand up against injustice.

In line with the album’s theme and Boston Celtic punk band’s ethos, vocalist Ken Casey recently participated in a humanitarian aid convoy in Ukraine, highlighting the band’s commitment to supporting the war-torn country. In recent years, Dropkick Murphys have raised money for Ukrainian aid efforts through the sale of limited-edition t-shirts, and Casey felt it was important to see things firsthand and to show moral support for the people of Ukraine.

As part of their longtime support of veterans and workers’ rights, Dropkick Murphys launched their tour with a performance on the National Mall in Washington, DC as part of the Unite for Veterans, Unite for America rally this past June 6 (the anniversary of D-Day).

Building on the band’s longtime relationship with the Boston Red Sox, last month DKM fans enjoyed a night of fun during Dropkick Murphys night at Fenway Park. A portion of ticket proceeds benefitted Dropkick Murphys' official charity, The Claddagh Fund, which has raised over $20 million to support non-profit organizations that are focused on children, veterans and addiction recovery.

For The People--the band’s 13th studio album--includes the current lineup of Ken Casey (vocals), Tim Brennan (guitars, tin whistle, accordion, piano, vocals), Jeff DaRosa (guitars, banjo, mandolin, vocals), Matt Kelly (drums, percussion, vocals), James Lynch (guitars, vocals), Kevin Rheault (bass) and Campbell Webster (bagpipes and Uilleann pipes).

“We've always had the same message and haven’t been afraid to speak out about what’s important to us. But for me now, I think about my kids’ future, and the next generation,” says Casey. That could be anything from speaking out against injustices, or just simply making sure you take the time to tell the people close to you how important they are to you.”

Casey pays tribute to the grandfather who raised him on “Chesterfields And Aftershave” and “The Big Man” is an ode to Pennywise guitarist Fletcher Dragge. “Streetlights” is a reflection on Casey’s father’s passing when Ken was only 8 years old.

“I never thought that I would write a song about the day my Dad died,” admits the frontman, “but sometimes, like a lot of our songs, suddenly the right words or the right way to say it will pop into my head. And it's like, ‘OK, well, now it's time to tell that story.’”

Billy Bragg provides guest vocals on DKM’s cover of Ewan MacColl’s “School Days Over” – coincidentally, a favorite of Bragg’s. “Billy's become a great friend,” says Casey. “It’s inspiring how he's carried on the protest singer legacy. He really walks the walk.”

Longtime band co-vocalist Al Barr, on hiatus from DKM since 2022, came back to guest on “The Vultures Circle High.” 

“Al is still taking time off for family,” says Casey, “but he’s still part of our family, so we thought it would be nice to have his voice on this record.”

Out now: 'Strange Hours,' the new album by Eli Young Band

Eli Young Band, 18x RIAA-certified country hitmakers, launch a new era with Strange Hours, available now. It is the band’s first independently released album via UnLevel Records and their first full album release in over three years.

Strange Hours' songs were all co-written as a band or with collaborators. Eric Arjes and Jimmy Robbins produced 12 of the 13 tracks, while “Bad Luck” was produced by Julian Raymond and Scott Borchetta.

“We started this thing when we were like 20 years old, and it’s been such a crazy road and such a longer road than any of us could have conceptualized at the time,” says bassist Jon Jones. “I think right now feels a little full circle, in a really nice way.”

Seeking both a fresh start and a return to their roots with this project, the never-changing lineup of Mike Eli, James Young, Jon Jones and Chris Thompson sought out Panhandle House Studio in their hometown of Denton, Texas – the birthplace of the college friends-turned-bandmates’ 2005 debut album Level, which spawned fan-favorites such as “Small Town Kid” and set the stage for the numerous hits that have followed in the 20 years since.

“Now, we get to step back into our Texas shoes,” vocalist Eli agrees. “I think this new stuff finds us reaching deep into our past as a band. We’re remembering where the magic was – all those songs we wanted to record for our Level record, that felt way too edgy for Country Radio at the time.”

For the band, being independent again for the first time in years isn’t a challenge, it’s a reward – and they took the chance to embrace not just renewed creative freedom, but the fun of their self contained live-band philosophy.

“Going back to Panhandle House where we recorded Level, it feels like we got to remind ourselves why we started making the kind of music we make,” Eli says. “When this music comes out, I think fans will know it is 100% coming from us.”

“Honestly, going to Panhandle House feels like going back to your childhood home in a way,” Jones notes. “It just evokes these memories, like this slightly-younger version of ourselves comes out.”

“One thing that’s really special is we’ve come full circle and remember that energy, but we’re also older and wiser,” drummer Thompson adds. “We have years of studio, songwriting and performing experience under our belt, so we have more of a honed edge going in. That’s a really cool advantage.”

Lead single “Home In Hometown” is a true-to-experience ballad of life on the highway. 

“I was digging deep into our Texas roots,” Eli says of the modern-classic midtempo. “I wanted to write something that felt like Pat Green or Jack Ingram would cut. And when you travel like we do, a lot of times you’re thinking about coming home and being with your family – but, it’s almost like if they meet you on the road, anywhere can be home. It just feels right. I wanted to capture that."

OMD sets deluxe reissue of hit 1985 album 'Crush' for October

Having reviewed the band's great performance at Cruel World festival last May (see elsewhere on this blog), I'm looking forward to hearing this...

To mark the 40th anniversary of U.S. breakout album Crush, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark have announced an expanded reissue, which is out October 10 via UMR/Virgin. This announcement follows the recent 40th anniversary of their acclaimed album Junk Culture.

Originally released on June 17, 1985, the band’s sixth album Crush contained the single "So In Love," which entered the Billboard Top 40, and radio hit "Secret." The album reached #13 on the UK Official Album Chart. 

Working from a batch of demos, Andy and Paul, plus multi-instrumentalist Martin Cooper and drummer Malcolm Holmes, began recording Crush in Liverpool’s Amazon Studios in the late winter of 1984. Having laid down what they could in Amazon, they then relocated to the more secluded facilities of The Manor, in the heart of Oxfordshire, where they enlisted US-born producer Stephen Hague to help pull the record together.

“We felt for the first time like we needed somebody to help us focus on the production,” McCluskey says. “We were too close to these half-written songs and needed someone who could be a little bit more objective. Stephen had a very slick production sound. Maybe unconsciously, we were also thinking, ‘If we’re going to break America, we need to be a bit more polished’.”

That approach successfully attracted a new audience and both Humphreys and McCluskey look back on it with fondness. Although Crush was created under gruelling conditions, there’s no doubting that everything paid off: “We managed to create an exceedingly good album,” McCluskey affirms. “We are very proud of every track.”

The 40th celebration of Crush will arrive on 2LP black and coloured vinyl, as well as 2CD and digital formats. Remastered from the original analogue files, the special anniversary release sees a wealth of brand new material including seven unreleased tracks from the album's multitrack sessions, mixed by Paul Humphreys. 

The new release also comes with two demos, an alternative mix, four never-before-heard songs, plus non-album b-sides and extended or 12" mixes, some of which have never been reissued or issued on CD/digitally. The package is rounded out with rare photos and comprehensive notes by journalist and author Jason Draper in conversation with Andy McCluskey.

“The 40th anniversary re-release of 'Crush' has been a wonderful opportunity for us to re-assess the album. 1985 was a period of great intensity with constant touring and time pressure in the studio, but we created a powerful collection of songs and lyrical themes,” Andy McCluskey said of the record.

“In hindsight, we made a much better album than we knew at the time. Two hit singles 'So in Love' and ‘Secret’ remain live set constants to this day. There is raw energy and anger in ‘88 seconds in Greensboro’, swaggering pomp of ‘The Native Daughters of the Golden West’, and the melancholy shroud of the title track ‘Crush’ juxtaposing relentless samples of Japanese TV adverts against the weary vocals and somnambulant instrumentation perfectly captures the jet lag induced dream state of global touring.We changed style and musical palette, but 'Crush' retains a confidence and energy that I am very proud of.”

OMD have sold 25 million singles and 15 million albums to date.
