Vampire Weekend Set April for First Album in Five Years

The fifth studio album — and first in five years — from Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig, Chris Baio and Chris Tomson, is due out April 5 from Columbia Records. 

Inspired by 20th Century New York City, the album was recorded all over the world, from Manhattan to Los Angeles to London and Tokyo. It was primarily produced by Koenig and longtime collaborator Ariel Rechtshaid, mixed by Dave Fridmann and mastered by Emily Lazar. Watch the album trailer HERE.

The beginnings of Only God Was Above Us stretch back to 2019-2020, when Koenig wrote the bulk of the lyrics. The title is lifted directly from the album artwork, comprised of photos taken from a subway graveyard in New Jersey in 1988 by Steven Siegel. 

In the album's cover, a man in a toppled subway car reads the May 1, 1988 edition of the New York Daily News — the cover story detailing the horrific explosion that tore the roof off Aloha Airlines flight 243. The headline quotes a survivor.

Rarities Collection by Late Badfinger Leader Pete Ham Set for Later This Month

Nearly 50 years after his untimely passing at 27, unreleased music by former Badfinger singer/guitarist Pete Ham will see the light of day. 

Due out Feb. 23 as a limited-edition CD from Y&T Music, “Gwent Gardens” includes 18 newly discovered home demos, many of them songs that were never recorded or released by either Badfinger or the group’s earlier incarnation, The Iveys.

The album will also be available on all streaming services.

The songs were recorded between 1966 and 1972 with guitar or piano accompaniment, with vocals often double tracked, Pete also overdubbed additional instruments onto the tracks.

The first act signed to the Beatles’ Apple Records label in 1968, Badfinger – through Pete Ham’s songwriting – scored global hits with “Day After Day,” “No Matter What” and “Baby Blue.” Co-written by Pete and his bandmate Tom Evans, “Without You” became an enduring classic, topping the charts in versions by Nilsson, Mariah Carey and others.

Produced with the blessing of the Pete Ham Estate, the “Gwent Gardens” project began with the late Dan Matovina, the musicologist and historian whose book “Without You” is regarded as the definitive Badfinger biography.

Matovina produced several albums of Pete Ham demos. Before his death in 2023, Matovina marveled to a close friend about the treasure trove of material still unreleased. “I can’t believe,” he said, “there are still so many great Pete Ham songs that no one has heard yet.” With the release of “Gwent Gardens,” those great songs referenced by Dan will now be a permanent part of Pete Ham's legacy.

2023 also saw the release of a special Pete Ham tribute album, “Shine On – A Tribute to Pete Ham.” The album featured 35 artists covering all of Pete’s compositions recorded by Badfinger. Among the artists paying tribute to Pete are Shelby Lynne, Dan Baird, Melanie, Mary Lou Lord, Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby, Dennis Diken, Stan Lynch & The Speaker Wars, Amy Allison and many more. The album benefited the Southeast Florida branch of Mental Health America and is still available for a limited time.

Kacey Musgraves news

Kacey Musgraves' fifth studio album Deeper Well drops March 15 through via Interscope/MCA Nashville; pre order the album HERE. She co-produced Deeper Well with longtime collaborators Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk.

Inspired by the energy of New York City’s Greenwich Village and its rich musical history, Musgraves recorded a good portion of the new album at the legendary Electric Lady studios.

“I was seeking some different environmental energy, and Electric Lady has the best mojo. Great ghosts,” noted Musgraves. While most of the tracks are penned by Musgraves with Fitchuk and Tashian, she is also reunited with Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne for “The Architect” (see full track listing below).

Deeper Well is the follow up to Musgraves’ 2021 album star-crossed, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Albums Sales chart and earned wide critical praise. star-crossed is the follow up to Musgraves’ groundbreaking 2018 album Golden Hour, which earned Kacey her third #1 debut on Billboard’s Top Country Album chart and distinguished her as only the third artist ever to take home Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards, Country Music Association Awards and Academy of Country Music Awards. 

 In 2023 Musgraves achieved her first #1 entry on the Hot 100 chart for “I Remember Everything,” a duet with Zach Bryan. “I Remember Everything” is the first country music duet in 40 years since Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers’ “Islands in the Stream” (1983) to reach this feat. “I Remember Everything” just won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song by a Duo or Group at the 66th annual ceremony held earlier this week. This latest win makes Musgraves the only artist in history to receive a Grammy Award for Best Country Album, Best Country Song, Best Country Solo performance and Best Country Duo or Group performance.

Marcus King's 'Mood Swings' album gets the Rick Rubin touch in April; extensive tour starts next month

Marcus King will release his new Rick Rubin produced album, Mood Swings, on April 5 via American/Republic Records. In support of it, King also announced his 2024 headlining tour across North America and Europe and is supporting Chris Stapleton. On “Mood Swings” King stated, “In the early summer of 2020 I arrived at Shangri-La for my first meeting with my hero, the legend, Mr. Rick Rubin. As soon as Rick & I met it was like a spark in the room! I immediately felt welcomed, appreciated and mutually admired. Rick and I had a wonderful first introduction and he left me in the capable hands of his Ace engineer Jason Lader, an incredible engineer who would become a dear dear friend. 

"Jason and I toured the space and just for fun decided to track something, what we tracked was the title track “Mood Swings.” I laid down guitar and vocals, we added Rhythm Ace R77 drum machine with tape delay to achieve the swing we desired, added bass & piano and after half an hour the track was finished. The track and album title “Mood Swings” is a play on the swinging nature of the material while also referencing my up and down shifts in mood while I was either abusing the wrong substances, in between mood stabilizing meds and anti-psychotics, self-medication on top of that, along with a foot locker full of repressed childhood trauma all being taken out on my relationship at the time.”

Legendary producer Rick Rubin who has worked with everyone from Adele to Johnny Cash, was instantly drawn to King’s guitar playing, singular voice and songwriting, and after witnessing a King live performance, one day randomly cold-called him to float the idea of working together.

Rick Rubin stated, “I love the way listening to this album makes me feel. I can’t think of another project quite like this one. Marcus’s playing and singing are from another planet.”

The pair secretly holed up for sessions in Italy and Malibu during the promotion of King’s critically acclaimed album, Young Blood. 

“There was no hiding behind the guitar at all,” King says. 

Yet Marcus King didn’t plan on making his new album Mood Swings. He didn’t even plan on living much longer before he started working on it. Heartache, addiction, and mental health brought him to the brink and during a North American tour, Marcus had designs to drink himself to death. He admits, “I had an escape route already decided for myself and a backup if that didn’t work.”

Around the same time, King went into Dan Auerbach studio and despite his mental health, drinking and substance abuse reaching untenable limits, he was able to create the critically acclaimed album Young Blood. 

Rubin helped King find a new personal and sonic approach and instead of crumbling under the weight of his anxiety, Rubin inspired him to shift his perspective. “He helped me view mental health as a writing partner in a way,” recalls Marcus. “I’ve learned it can give me that creative spark.”

Previously released new song “F*ck My Life Up Again” is a departure. Elsewhere on Mood Swings, King accepts the challenges he’s faced. “Without this assembly of songs, I don’t think I’d be around,” King shares, “I hope this album can act as a safety blanket, a rescue, or a refuge for anybody struggling with mental health, substance abuse, or relationship issues. That’s what it is for me.”

Past Coachella Fave Maggie Rogers Set to Release New Album in April

GRAMMY® Award-nominated songwriter/producer/performer Maggie Rogers - who has wowed audiences at the Coachella Festivals in 2019 and 2022 and collaborated with Phoebe Bridgers - will release her third studio album, on April 12 via Capitol Records.

“I wanted to make an album that sounded like a Sunday afternoon,” explains Rogers in the letter below, which tells the story of the making of Don’t Forget Me. “Worn in denim. A drive in your favorite car. No make up, but the right amount of lipstick. Something classic. The mohair throw and bottle of Whiskey in Joan Didion’s motel room. An old corvette. Vintage, but not overly Americana. I wanted to make an album to belt at full volume alone in your car, a trusted friend who could ride shotgun and be there when you needed her.”

She co-produced Don’t Forget Me with Ian Fitchuk (Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris) at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, writing eight of its 10 songs with him and penning two alone. Shawn Everett (Brittany Howard, The War on Drugs) mixed. The album was mastered by Emily Lazar (Beck, Coldplay), who has mastered all of Rogers’ albums to date.

Rogers debuted “Don’t Forget Me,” “The Kill” and “So Sick Of Dreaming” during her sold-out Summer of ’23 North American headline tour. Additional songs were previewed during last month’s listening parties.

The Cure marks 30th Anniversary Of Live Album 'Paris' with Expanded Vinyl and CD Editions

‘Paris’, the double live album by The Cure, has turned 30 years old, and to celebrate, new 2LP and 1CD versions will be reissued via Rhino Records on March 22 featuring two bonus tracks.

Remastered by Robert Smith and Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios, the LP is being issued on black vinyl for the first time since 1993.

This was the second of two live records documenting the band’s 1992 tour in support of their ninth album ‘Wish’. The first album ‘Show’ was released in September 1993 and reissued in July last year.

The 14-track album was recorded over three nights at Le Zénith de Paris in October 1992 and includes the singles “Lovesong”, “Catch”, “A Letter To Elise”, “Charlotte Sometimes”, “Close To Me” and favorites “Play For Today” and ‘One Hundred Years’.

The Cure’s 30th anniversary re-issue of ‘Paris’ has now been expanded with the addition of two recently discovered previously unreleased tracks “Shake Dog Shake” and “Hot Hot Hot!!!” The album running order has also been reconfigured accordingly.

The Beach Boys tour and book news

The Beach Boys' Endless Summer Gold 2024 Tour starts later this month in Honolulu and will  visit the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Stagecoach, the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, among many other stops.

The tour starts just ahead of the debut of their official book The Beach Boys by The Beach Boys, slated for release on April 2 via Genesis Publications. Published in a limited edition of only 500 copies worldwide, the book captures the group's rise from Hawthorne garage band to internationally renowned act, covering the release of their first single, 'Surfin'', up to their 1980 Independence Day concert at the National Mall in Washington D.C., for an audience of over half a million people. Told through the music of Brian Wilson with Mike Love, along with Al Jardine, Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson, David Marks and Bruce Johnston, The Beach Boys by The Beach Boys is accompanied by rare photographs and historical ephemera. 

The forthcoming tour and book also arrive on the heels of a series of significant milestones for the band including the CBS tribute special “A Grammy Salute to the Beach Boys,” which aired last year and featured performances from artists such as Beck, Brandi Carlile, Michael McDonald, Pentatonix, St. Vincent, Weezer, Norah Jones, John Legend, and Mumford & Sons, among others. In 2022, The Beach Boys released Sail On Sailor – 1972 – an expansive box set that celebrates their 1972 era which bore the albums Carl and the Passions – “So Tough” and Holland. The collection boasts newly remastered versions of the studio albums, a reproduction of the Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairytale) EP, an unreleased live concert recorded at Carnegie on Thanksgiving, 1972, plus unreleased outtakes, live recordings, radio promos, alternate versions, alternate mixes, isolated backing tracks and a cappella versions, culled from the historic album sessions.

The Beach Boys are led by lead singer Mike Love, along with longtime member Bruce Johnston, musical director Brian Eichenberger, Christian Love, Tim Bonhomme, Jon Bolton, Keith Hubacher, Randy Leago and John Wedemeyer.
