Blitz Vega's debut album, due in April, features former Smiths members Andy Rourke and Johnny Marr

“The album is a diary of the last seven years of the journey that Andy, the band and I went on recording this music as Blitz Vega,” says Kav Sandhu about NORTHERN GENTLEMEN, the debut album by BLITZ VEGA, a band that he and the late Andy Rourke (The Smiths) started in 2016 and officially launched in 2019.

Set for release on April 26, 2024 via FutureSonic Records/CEN/The Orchard, the album is a bittersweet celebration of Andy’s impact on the music world and especially this band. Andy Rourke succumbed to pancreatic cancer last May.

“Every song tells a story and personally takes me back to a memory recording that song, the drive to the studio. That conversation or whatever happened surrounding the recording session,” Kav continues, evoking not only the emotions of sadness for Andy’s death but also the happy memories that came with their personal friendship and musical collaboration.

“I hear his voice in my head, replaying everything we talked about when we were recording the song. I see his face smiling at me. On my last trip back to LA a few weeks ago, I was driving to the studio and it felt like Andy was sitting there with me like he had been so many times before, talking about music, just excited to get this album made. So, all the songs mean the world to me.”

Recorded over the span of five years, Northern Gentlemen contains Andy and Kav’s combined songwriting. Mostly penned during the pandemic, Kav recalls what it was like remaining creative during quarantine and lockdown. Forced to cancel touring plans (“We had to cancel three U.S. tours”), the band “locked ourselves away in the studio in LA. It was our happy zone,” Kav recalls.

“We recorded and wrote so much music around this time. Before the pandemic, Andy’s illness would get better and would also come back so we were constantly dealing with circumstances that made moving the band forward difficult. But it’s what Andy, all the lads in the band, and I wanted to make work more than anything. So we constantly adapted to the challenges in front of us. We never stopped making music, recording and writing.”

Johnny Marr, Andy’s bandmate in The Smiths, added his trademark guitar jangle to the single “Strong Forever,” which was originally released in Fall 2022. It was co-produced and mixed by Z-Trip (Kasabian), and saw Andy and Johnny recording together for the first time in 35 years.

The two have played together live several times over the years (Andy made a surprise appearance during Johnny's show with The Killers at Madison Square Garden in Sept. 2022). Andy said at the time, " I asked Johnny, who very kindly recorded some guitars and sent them over. Johnny and I have remained friends, we've known each other since we were 13 years old. He's my oldest and dearest friend and I feel our friendship gets stronger as time passes."

In anticipation of the new Blitz Vega album Northern Gentlemen, the band and label are re-releasing their exclusive 2023 Record Store Day 12" vinyl, Strong Forever, to all stores this month. The EP includes two remixes by Daybreakers and Will Kennedy, the single version by Z-Trip Mix, and the original version by Jagz Kooner on Side A.

“We have an EDM version which you can hear blasting in a proper dance club mixed by The Daybreakers who are fantastic,” explains Kav. “Both Andy’s and my favorite mix of all was Will Kennedy’s live band version because we have a string quartet playing on it. I love them all, but on that one you can really feel the band!” Side B is rounded out with remixes of two previously released singles “Lost & Found” (Jagz Kooner and Daybreakers) and “LA Vampire” (Jagz Kooner), and previously unreleased track “Big Nose.”

“I miss him so much,” Kav says, reflecting on his bandmate. “He was one of my greatest friends and the best musician and bandmate. He was also so humble. He made me promise him we would release this album no matter what and go out to play it live. It’s difficult, but we owe him that as it’s what he really wanted. This was his band, his ideas, his songs. We are committed to celebrating his music and letting people listen to the music he was making right until he passed. He was so excited for people to hear it."

About the album title, Kav explains remembering the sunny times, “We would have a lot of banter between us and constantly be making fun of each other in the studio. I used to say, ‘Wow you’re such a northern gentleman.’ It was kind of like an inside joke between us. Now, when I would describe him to my label partners, I’d call him a ‘northern gentleman.’ They suggested ‘that should be the title of the album’ and it just felt right.”

The future of Blitz Vega in regards to Andy's passing is a future Kav and band haven’t decided on yet. “I have no idea about writing new music as Blitz Vega,” he replies. “We are just taking one step at a time. We definitely want to release all the music we recorded and go on tour. I promised this to Andy.”

Looking back at the last few decades as friends, Kav gets misty-eyed and wants everyone to hear what he and Andy have been working on. He says, after some contemplation, “I just hope it makes Andy proud.”

San Francisco new wave/rockabilly outfit Pearl Harbour to get expanded reissue of 1980 album in March

Liberation Hall Records has announced an expanded edition reissue of Pearl Harbour's 1980 album, Don't Follow Me, I'm Lost Too. The title will make its CD debut on March 22 alongside a new "purple grape" vinyl pressing. The vinyl will feature four bonus tracks while the CD will further add a pair of previously unreleased demos.
Both the CD and vinyl formats will be distributed by MVD Entertainment Group.

Patricia Gilbert began her career in San Francisco’s burgeoning music scene in the 1970s, dancing on stage with the Tubes in 1976 before becoming part of another local act, Leila and the Snakes. In 1978, she adopted the stage name “Pearl Harbor” and formed Pearl Harbor and the Explosions alongside two of the Snakes. They recorded a well-received, self-titled debut album for Warner Bros. Records and toured extensively.

When it came time to record a second LP, the band split due to disagreements over musical direction. At the time, Pearl was dating Clash associate and sometime manager Kosmo Vinyl, and the couple relocated to London. Pearl decided she wanted to go in a rockabilly direction for Don’t Follow Me, I’m Lost Too, and Kosmo went about assembling an all-star studio band which included Paul Simonon, Topper Headon, and Mick Jones from the Clash; Wilko Johnson from Dr. Feelgood and Ian Dury & the Blockheads; Nigel Dixon from Whirlwind; Steve New from the Rich Kids; and Steve Goulding from Graham Parker & the Rumour.

Produced by Blockheads keyboardist Mickey Gallagher, the LP also features contributions from pedal steel guitarist BJ Cole, keyboardist Geraint Watkins, and saxophonist Gary Barnacle. Since Pearl was now living in the UK, Warners’ London office insisted she update her name to the British spelling of “Harbour.” Don’t Follow Me, I’m Lost Too was released in December 1980, and despite being a crackling blend of rockabilly, country, rock ‘n’ roll, and Pearl’s own unique star quality, Warner Bros. failed to get behind the album. Within the year, she was touring as a special guest with the Clash, performing Wanda Jackson’s “Fujiyama Mama” as an encore with the band. In May 1982, she married Simonon and the union lasted for seven years.

The expanded CD and vinyl formats of Don't Follow Me, I'm Lost Too will feature new liner notes from Pearl alongside photos and memorabilia from her personal collection. In addition to “Fujiyama Mama,” Pearl’s interpretations of Billy Cox and Cliff Hobbs’ “Filipino Baby,” Ian Dury’s “Rough Kids,” and LaVern Baker’s “Voodoo Voodoo" are also included. Kula Shaker gets original members back together for 'Natural Magick'

Psychedelic Brit rockers Kula Shaker are set to release 7th studio album: NATURAL MAGICK which is due out digitally worldwide on February 2 via Strange Folk Records, with CD and vinyl available in North America on March 1, distributed by BFD/The Orchard.

The band’s seventh studio album finds all four original band members reunited, for the first time in twenty-five years, with the return of keyboard wizard Jay Darlington after a decade with Oasis and various Gallagher brothers. The new video for the title track, “Natural Magick” can be seen here.

NATURAL MAGICK is produced by Kula Shaker frontman/guitarist Crispian Mills, co-writer and bassist Alonza Bevan and Kevin Nixon. To pre-order the album, please click here.

On the making of the new album, Kula Shaker’s Crispian Mills avowed, “It was actually very similar to the way we recorded [debut album] K, back when we only had half an hour to blow people away. We wrote and tested all the songs on the road so they’re all quite tough and tight in arrangement. If you can take an audience on a fantastical ride in a few short minutes, there’s a thrill and excitement in that.”

Named after a 10th century South Indian King, Kula Shaker first emerged during the 1990s Britpop era, with their multi-platinum debut album, K. Selling millions of records, Kula Shaker has enjoyed success not only in their native Britain - where they notched 7 Top 20 singles from 1996-99 - but also worldwide. In the U.S, the band is best known for the cover of 1960s rock nugget "Hush."

Kula Shaker is Crispian Mills (guitar, vocals), Alonza Bevan (bass, vocals), Paul Winter-Hart (drums) and Jay Darlington (Hammond organ, keys).
