Andrew McMahon update: tour dates, memoir ahead

Singer-songwriter Andrew McMahon announces his fall tour Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness: Three Pianos Tour with support from Zac Clark. The U.S. headline tour kicks off in September in Las Vegas and ends in December in Los Angeles.

Tickets go on sale June 18 and can be purchased here: www.andrewmcmahon.com/tour/.

As previously announced, McMahon’s debut memoir, Three Pianos, will be published by Princeton Architectural Press on October 26. For more information, visit: https://andrewmcmahon.com/pages/three-pianos-a-memoir

“Never have I been more excited to announce a tour. The weirdness we are emerging from has left its mark on all of us and I have been dreaming of the day we could gather in rooms again and shake off its effects together. I will be traveling light this time, surrounded by a small group of friends, performing a set of songs that for me are like mile markers on the map of my life. I spent my time away from the world writing a book, trying to understand more fully who I am and where I came from. I can think of no better time than now, the anniversary of 20 years on tour, to assemble my work on a stage and do what I can to share that history with you through my songs and stories. Like my book, this tour will be called Three Pianos, and while I can’t bring all three of them on the road with me, I hope to channel the wonderful and bizarre affection I have for their place in my world. Any time I embark on some new and public adventure I am filled with fear of the unknown, but if I have learned anything from tours like The Pen and the Piano, from first leaps onto rubber ducks or out on to dance floors beneath parachutes, it is worth taking chances. I am crafting this show with the knowledge it may be the first many of you have attended in a very long time. That comes with pressure, but from that pressure I hope to make something cathartic and worthy of your trust in me. The lights are coming back on, let's sing together beneath them.” - Andrew McMahon

McMahon is currently in the studio working on new music.

Crowded House 'Live From the Island' livestream review

If any longtime
Crowded House fans were skeptical about how the current lineup would sound in concert, those doubts should have ceased last Saturday when the veteran pop/rock band debuted its excellent streaming event, Live From the Island.

Recorded and filmed on tour this past March before a home country crowd in Auckland, New Zealand, the show was among the initial full capacity sold-out arena performances by an international music artist since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down venues worldwide.

Crowded House co-founding singer/songwriter/guitarist Neil Finn and bassist/backing vocalist Nick Seymour are now joined by keyboardist Mitchell Froom (producer of the first three Crowdies albums as well as the just-released Dreamers are Waiting), Finn's sons Liam on guitars/backing vocals and Elroy on drums/backing vocals. An extra percussionist rounded out the stage musicians.

The exhilarating 24-song set clocked in at just over two hours and touched upon all the group's studio releases with emphasis on 1991's Woodface and 1993's Together Alone. I was pleased to hear so much material from the latter effort because its promotional campaign was the first time that I interviewed Neil at the famous Capitol Records tower in Hollywood.

From a practical standpoint, the setlist choices made perfect sense because the new songs on Dreamers are often as atmospheric in nature as those on Together. Here, the guys debuted three of them live. In recent  interviews, Neil has stated that any future touring will likely include more than half a dozen Dreamers tunes.

The band opened the gig in jubilant fashion with "Weather with You," all the usual harmonies intact. Seymour - clad in a kilt - was obviously having a grand old time. Liam acquitted himself well on electric guitar, especially amid some searing lead solos on "Mean to Me," "In My Command" and "Whispers and Moans." He even tossed his instrument in the air a la Pete Townshend at the conclusion of rocker "Locked Out."

"World Where You Live," bolstered by Froom's sinewy organ work (he also played on the studio recording), was an early standout as Neil Finn's vocals were sturdy as ever. He frequently moved around the stage, interacted and bantered about with Liam and Nick.

Whenever Liam had a chance, he took out a Super 8 camera and filmed the proceedings. Various short black and white snippets were shown throughout the livestream production (the overall camera work was top notch).

A majestic new "Playing with Fire" evoked the California pop harmony sound of the mid-to-late 1960s. Similarly, "Four Seasons in One Day," was prefaced by a new orchestral intro that made for a seamless transition.

Crowded House wound down the main set with their signature hit "Don't Dream It's Over," a joyous "Something So Strong" and captivating "Distant Sun."

Come encore time, the whimsical "Chocolate Cake" saw Neil take to the piano for the first time that evening and pull out all the stops (see photo, left). He stayed put for a surprising, yet satisfying cover of David Bowie's "Heroes," but eventually stood up to give the vocals a more dramatic emphasis at the stage front.

After a fan tossed up a paper airplane scrawled with a song request, Neil hesitantly obliged and did "Elephants" (off Intriguer) and then capped everything off with a striking "I Got You," from Neil's first band Split Enz. All told it was an impressive show. I look forward to a future North American tour.

Crowded House enthusiasts can still access the livestream via www.CrowdedHouseStream.com and watch it on demand through Sunday, June 20 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (U.S.). There are also several exclusive merchandise items available for purchase this week.

George Harrison’s 'All Things Must Pass' to get lavish reissue treatment

Recorded and released in the wake of The Beatles’ April 1970 dissolution, George Harrison’s landmark solo album, All Things Must Pass was produced by Harrison and Phil Spector.

The 23-track studio effort was the first triple studio album. It spans rock, country, gospel, blues, pop, folk, R&B, Indian classical music and devotional songs. Despite the album's success and Harrison’s affection for it, he would write in the liner notes for the 30th anniversary remaster, released in 2001, “I still like the songs on the album and believe they can continue to outlive the style in which they were recorded,” adding, however, “it was difficult to resist re-mixing every track. All these years later I would like to liberate some of the songs from the big production that seemed appropriate at the time."

Decades in the making and lovingly crafted by the Harrison family, All Things Must Pass has now been completely remixed from the original tapes for a suite of 50th-anniversary releases that fulfills Harrison’s longtime desire.

Executive producer Dhani Harrison, producer David Zonshine and award-winning engineer Paul Hicks all worked on the sonic upgrade.

Scheduled for Aug. 6 via Capitol/UMe, All Things Must Pass 50th Anniversary Edition will be available in a variety of formats:

UBER DELUXE EDITION

Exclusive to GeorgeHarrison.com, uDiscover, and Sound of Vinyl, All Things Must Pass 50th Anniversary Edition will be available as a very limited Uber Deluxe Edition box set, which includes the album on 8LP (180g) and 5CD + 1 Blu-ray audio disc housed in an artisan designed wooden crate (approx. 12.4” X 12.4” X 17.5”). The collection explores the 1970 album sessions through 47 (42 previously unreleased) demos and outtakes, offering an inside look into the creative process. The Blu-ray allows fans to experience the main album in a high-res stereo, enveloping 5.1 surround sound and Dolby Atmos mixes.

The crate contains two books, an expanded 96-page scrapbook curated by Olivia Harrison, with unseen imagery and memorabilia from the era, handwritten lyrics, diary entries, studio notes, tape box images, a track-by-track, and more; while a second 44-page book chronicling the making of All Things Must Pass through archival interviews with notes is also contained within. The book pays homage to Harrison’s love of gardening and nature. The book also contains a wooden bookmark made from a felled Oak tree (Quercus Robur) in George’s Friar Park. This truly unique box will also contain 1/6 scale replica figurines of Harrison and the gnomes featured on the iconic album cover, a limited edition illustration by musician and artist Klaus Voormann, as well as a copy of Paramahansa Yogananda’s “Light from the Great Ones” and Rudraksha beads, contained in individual custom-made boxes.

SUPER DELUXE EDITION

The Super Deluxe Edition box set, presented on 8LP (180g) or 5CD + 1 Blu-ray audio disc, explores the 1970 album sessions through 47 (42 previously unreleased) demos and outtakes. The Blu-ray allows fans to experience the main album in a high-res stereo, 5.1 surround sound and Dolby Atmos mixes. The collection contains a 60-page scrapbook curated by Olivia Harrison, with unseen imagery and memorabilia from the era, handwritten lyrics, diary entries, studio notes, tape box images, a track-by-track, and more. It also includes a replica of the original album poster.

All Things Must Pass will be released in multiple physical and digital configurations, including as a 5LP or 3CD Deluxe Edition that pairs the main album with the session's outtakes and jams. The main album will be available on its own as 2CD, 3LP, or limited edition 3LP color vinyl. All versions are available for pre-order now.

"Since the 50th-anniversary stereo mix release of the title track to my father’s legendary All Things Must Pass album in 2020, my dear pal Paul Hicks and I have continued to dig through mountains of tapes to restore and present the rest of this newly remixed and expanded edition of the album you now see and hear before you,” says Dhani Harrison.

“Bringing greater sonic clarity to this record was always one of my father’s wishes and it was something we were working on together right up until he passed in 2001. Now, 20 years later, with the help of new technology and the extensive work of Paul Hicks we have realized this wish and present to you this very special 50th Anniversary release of perhaps his greatest work of art. Every wish will be fulfilled."

The original release of All Things Must Pass collected 18 songs over two LPs alongside a third LP – dubbed “Apple Jam” – showcasing four improvised instrumentals including a pair recorded as part of Derek and the Dominoes’ first-ever official recording session in June 1970. In addition, the “Apple Jam” disc includes “It’s Johnny’s Birthday,” sung to the tune of Cliff Richard’s 1968 hit “Congratulations” and recorded as a gift from Harrison to mark John Lennon’s 30th birthday.

The All Things Must Pass session tapes created in 1970 include over twenty-five hours of music on forty-nine 1” eight-track tapes, four 2” sixteen-track tapes, and forty-four ¼” stereo tapes. Richard Radford, Archivist for the George Harrison Estate oversaw the preservation of the tape collection, with the original analog multi-track and stereo tapes transferred to 192 KHz/24bit digital preservation copies.

Hailed by Rolling Stone as “the War and Peace of rock and roll” and “an intensely personal statement and a grandiose gesture,” All Things Must Pass was met by unanimous critical acclaim and spectacular commercial success, spending seven weeks at #1 on Billboard’s “Top LPs” chart and eight weeks atop the UK’s official albums chart (though chart records until 2006 mistakenly stated that it had peaked at #4). Currently certified 6x platinum by the RIAA, All Things Must Pass later received a 1972 GRAMMY® Award nomination for “Album of the Year,” while “My Sweet Lord” earned a GRAMMY® nod for “Record of the Year.” “What Is Life,” the album’s second single, also became an international hit, reaching the top 10 in the US and Canada as well as #1 in Australia and Switzerland.

All Things Must Pass has only grown in influence and stature in the half-century since its initial release, including induction in the GRAMMY® Hall of Fame and inclusion on The Times of London’s “The 100 Best Albums of All Time” and Rolling Stone’s 2020 listing of “The Top 500 Albums of All Time.” Pitchfork declared it to have “changed the terms of what an album could be.”

Lindsey Buckingham news

Lindsey Buckingham has announced his forthcoming self-titled LP due out September 17, 2021 on Reprise, alongside the first single, “I Don’t Mind.”

This is his first solo release since 2011’s Seeds We Sow and follows his departure from Fleetwood Mac. It follows seven studio and three live albums he has released as a solo artist beginning with 1981’s Law and Order.

Written, produced and recorded by Buckingham at his home studio in Los Angeles, CA, the new album will be released via vinyl, CD and on all digital and streaming services. A limited edition blue vinyl version is also available for pre-order via www.lindseybuckingham.com.

Says Buckingham of the meaning of the single, “‘I Don’t Mind’, like many of the songs on my new album, is about the challenges couples face in long-term relationships.” He continues, “Over time, two people inevitably find the need to augment their initial dynamic with one of flexibility, an acceptance of each others’ flaws and a willingness to continually work on issues; it is the essence of a good long term relationship. This song celebrates that spirit and discipline.”

The veteran musician pays homage to ‘60s folk group the Pozo-Seco Singers’ hit single “Time,” a song he’s admired since he was as a teenager and has long intended to cover. “I wanted to make a pop album, but I also wanted to make stops along the way with songs that resemble art more than pop,” he says. “As you age, hopefully you keep getting a little more grounded in the craft of what you’re doing. For me, getting older has probably helped to reinforce the innocence and the idealism that hopefully was always there.”

Buckingham will be returning to the stage with a 30-city 2021 U.S. tour, marking his first in-person shows following open-heart surgery in 2019. He’ll kick off the extensive run of shows in September. Tickets go on sale June 11th at 10:00AM local time. Visit www.lindseybuckingham.com for more info.
