St. Lucia take the acoustic route in the studio and small venue tour

St. Lucia has released a cover from The 1975 on from their forthcoming Acoustic Vol. 1 EP. Listen HERE. Acoustic Vol. 1 will be released in April via Columbia Records.

The 7-track EP will feature both songs from the band’s latest album Hyperion, as well as long-time fan favorites such as “Elevate” and “All Eyes On You.” The release will also include two new versions of “Love Somebody,” where Patti Beranek does her first vocal lead on a St. Lucia record, along with a Portuguese version of the track.

St. Lucia has also announced a North American tour which will see the band playing in a special stripped-down setup in some of the smallest venues they’ve performed at in years. Fans will also have a chance to help the band choose each night’s setlist.

Justin Moore sings about 'Late Nights and Longnecks' on upcoming album

Justin Moore’s new album Late Nights and Longnecks, due April 26 via The Valory Music Co., features busy session guitarist Brent Mason and pedal steel player Paul Franklin among others.

“I’ve never worked with those guys [Mason and Franklin] before, but they’ve played on some of my favorite albums of all time,” says the country music singer. “We thought it would be really cool to bring them in and record the whole thing at The Castle, this historic studio just south of Nashville where a lot of those legendary hit records were made.”

An Arkansas native, Moore grew up idolizing country legends like Dwight Yoakam and Keith Whitley and was inspired by home, family and tradition. For this album, Moore headed to the beach where it all began and invited some of his favorite Nashville collaborators to join him. Longtime producer Jeremy Stover and Big Machine Label Group President/CEO Scott Borchetta were at the helm.

The National band album, tour news

The National announced I Am Easy To Find due out May 17 on 4AD along with opening track “You Had Your Soul With You” featuring the vocals of longtime David Bowie collaborator Gail Ann Dorsey. It is the band’s eighth studio album and the follow-up to 2017’s Grammy-winning release Sleep Well Beast.

A companion short film with the same name will also be released with music by The National and inspired by the album. The film was directed by Academy Award-nominated director Mike Mills (20th Century Women, Beginners), and starring Academy Award Winner Alicia Vikander. Mills, along with the band, is credited as co-producer of the album, which features vocal contributions from Sharon Van Etten, Brooklyn Youth Chorus, Lisa Hannigan and more. Pre-order HERE and watch film trailer HERE.

More about I Am Easy To Find

On September 3, 2017, director Mike Mills emailed Matt Berninger to introduce himself and in very short order, the most ambitious project of the National’s nearly 20-year career was born and plans for a hard-earned vacation died. The Los Angeles-based filmmaker was coming off his third feature, 20th Century Women, and was interested in working with the band on...something. A video maybe. Berninger, already a fan of Mills’ films, not only agreed to collaborate, he essentially handed over the keys to the band’s creative process.

The result is I Am Easy to Find, a 24-minute film by Mills starring Alicia Vikander, and I Am Easy to Find, a 68-minute album by the National. The former is not the video for the latter; the latter is not the soundtrack to the former.

Both projects are, as Mills calls them, “Playfully hostile siblings that love to steal from each other”—they share music and words and DNA and impulses and a vision about what it means to be human in 2019, but don’t necessarily need one another. The movie was composed like a piece of music; the music was assembled like a film, by a film director.

“Yes, there are a lot of women singing on this, but it wasn't because, ‘Oh, let's have more women's voices,’ says Berninger. “It was more, ‘Let's have more of a fabric of people's identities.’ It would have been better to have had other male singers, but my ego wouldn't let that happen.”

Bush, Live and Our Lady Peace to tour this summer

Alt-rock bands LIVE and Bush are joining forces for The ALT-IMATE Tour, a co-headline summer run that will see these two acts celebrating the 25th anniversary of their respective landmark albums Throwing Copper and Sixteen Stone.

This road show will hit arenas and outdoor amphitheaters in over a dozen cities across North America starting in June.

Nils Lofgren's collaborations with Lou Reed and more see the light on 'Blue With Lou'

I'm always interested in any new material Nils puts out. I was fortunate enough to attend a Grammy Museum program he did in LA describing some of these songs with Lou. Here's hoping he adds some West Coast dates in America as well. Read on for all the album details...

Blue With Lou, an all-new collection by Nils Lofgren featuring a dozen songs (half of which were penned in collaboration with the late Lou Reed) arrives April 26 via Cattle Track Road Records. Available in single CD and double-LP configurations, it was produced by the musician and his wife Amy.

Basic tracks were recorded live at his home studio in Arizona with longtime collaborators Andy Newmark (drums) and Kevin McCormick (bass). Saxophonist Branford Marsalis is heard on a Lofgren-Reed composition “City Lights.”

Five more songs co-written by the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers have never seen the light of day and have remained in the trunk for decades.

Producer Bob Ezrin, who had worked with Lofgren, and previously worked with Reed on his concept album Berlin suggested the collaboration, leading to Lofgren and Reed spending a long night at Lou’s New York City apartment discussing the collaboration which led to 13 songs penned together.

“I kind of forgot about the idea,” Lofgren recalls. “About a month after that, I was sound asleep, the phone rang at 4:30 in the morning, and I answered it in the dark. ‘Hey, Nils, it’s Lou Reed.’ That woke me up. He said, ‘I’ve been listening to the tape you sent, and I love it. I’ve been up for three days and nights straight. I haven’t slept. I’ve been working on your tape. I’ve completed 13 sets of lyrics that I love.’ And I’m like, ‘You’ve gotta be kidding me.’ Then he said, ‘If you wanna get a pad and pencil, I’ll dictate them to you.’ We spent two more hours on the phone. You can imagine my excitement.”

Ultimately, the co-written songs “A Fool Like Me,” “I Found Her,” and “I’ll Cry Tomorrow” (the last co-written with guitarist Dick Wagner) appeared on Nils, while Reed claimed “City Lights,” “Stupid Man,” and “With You” for his own 1979 album The Bells. The pair’s “Life” appeared on Lofgren’s Damaged Goods (1995), while “Driftin’ Man” was recorded for his Breakaway Angel (2001).

After Reed’s death in 2013, Lofgren revisited the idea of recording their unheard songs. He says, “They got left by the wayside. Years went by, and it kept nagging at me. I thought, look, Lou’s not here to deliver these lyrics. He was inspired when he did this. It would be a shame not to share it.”

Lofgren began shaping those tunes and refining his own new original songs during his stint with Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band during the group’s '17 tour in Australia.

“I began preparing, arranging, and practicing to be able to have every lyric written, every melody,” he recalls. “The goal was that by the time my old friends Andy Newmark and Kevin McCormick got to the house to record, I could perform every song live with no problem. I wanted to go for live takes, no matter what instrument I was playing. Then it would be fine to go in and fill in the blanks, add background vocals, add extra sounds. But I wanted to keep it a very simple record. I practiced for that a long time while I was preparing the sessions.”

The newly recorded Lofgren-Reed compositions — “Attitude City,” “Give,” “Talk Thru the Tears,” “City Lights,” “Don’t Let Your Guard Down,” and “Cut Him Up” were captured live in the studio.

These tracks mark Lofgren's first fresh original material since 2011’s Old School. Not unexpectedly, Blue With Lou takes its title from a song honoring his late colleague.

“I had the title and the groove,” he says, “and I worked from that like a jigsaw puzzle on this homage to Lou and what I took from him, which is, yes, we’re in a mess here, but there’s beauty and hope in all art. The theme of the record is about being expressive, keeping it live and raw, and moving forward, trusting your instincts.”

Of the track “Rock or Not,” Lofgren says, “In the climate that we’re in, it turned into my version of a protest song — come on, talk’s cheap, sh*t or get off the pot, let’s freakin’ get some stuff done.”

“Too Blue to Play” is a metaphorical look at his relationship with wife and creative partner Amy. There are two songs of loss, “Remember You” (a reminiscence about the family’s beloved dog Groucho), and “Dear Heartbreaker” (a tribute to his longtime friend Tom Petty).

He says of the latter two numbers, “All these things, these people and friends that are gone, are not forgotten. You’ve got to find their spirits and hook into them as companions moving forward. I felt those songs went together and they needed to be at the end of the album.”

In sum, Lofgren says, “I definitely feel a greater urgency and inspiration in the music, thanks to all that we laid out to accomplish on this heartfelt project.”

Dionne Warwick announces 'She's Back' album

Grammy Award winner Dionne Warwick has a new album, “She's Back," due on May 10 via Kind Music/Entertainment One. It was produced by her son Damon Elliot. The lead-off single will be an updated version of the Burt Bacharach/Hal David classic, “What The World Needs Now Is Love”, which Dionne recorded during the 1960s.

In addition to 10 new remakes of pop/soul songs, “She’s Back” will be packaged with a bonus disc of her 1998 album, “Dionne Sings Dionne”, which features her greatest hits, remastered for this package. “She’s Back” also includes duets with Kenny Lattimore (“What Color Is Love”), Musiq Soulchild (“Am I Dreaming?) as well as Bone, Thugs & Harmony’s Krayzie Bone (“Déjà Vu”).

“She’s Back” is Ms. Warwick’s 36th full-length studio recording, and her first dedicated R&B/soul album in fifty years, since the release of the 1969 Scepter LP, Soulful, which she co-produced in Memphis with Chips Moman (who’d manned the boards for Dionne’s then-label mate, B.J. Thomas).

Warwick is one of several legends to be chosen to receive one of the Grammy Awards’ highest honors this year – the Lifetime Achievement Award. Honorees were mentioned in the Grammy Awards live telecast earlier this month. A separate award presentation ceremony and concert celebrating the honorees will be held the day after the release of She’s Back, on May 11 in Los Angeles.

Additionally, Dionne will begin a concert residency in Las Vegas on April 4.

Smashing Pumpkins and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds will be hitting the road together for a summer tour. AFI will join as special guest on all dates.

The special run of dates will see both artists performing outdoor shows at amphitheaters across North America throughout the month of August. The outing will also include a stop at the new Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles, CA, more information on that show to be announced soon.
