Ringo Starr U.S. tour dates, 'Octopus' book release

If you watched The Beatles special on CBS last night (or the Grammy Award telecast), saw Ringo Starr perform and would like to see him live, you have another chance this summer (see dates below).

The current All Starr band is the same line up the drummer has played with since 2012 featuring Steve Lukather, Richard Page, Gregg Rolie, Todd Rundgren and Gregg Bissonette. “I love playing with this band,” Starr said, “and I can’t wait to get back out and play with them again.”

 

Last month, Starr's musical legacy was celebrated when The David Lynch Foundation honored him with the "Lifetime of Peace & Love Award." The event included a star-studded tribute performing from Starr’s extensive catalog.

 

Then he performed “Photograph” on the Grammys, followed by him jumping on the kit during his old bandmate, Paul McCartney’s performance. The two then performed together again the following evening for several songs for the CBS taping of The Beatles Tribute celebrating the 50th Anniversary of their first U.S. visit and appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. 

 

In stores now via Simon & Shuster is "Octopus's Garden," a children's book based on Ringo's lyrics. This book comes on the heels of December of last year's Photograph, the Genesis Publications book  (http://www.genesis- publications.com/photograph- by-ringo-starr-the-signed- limited-edition/).

 

It was first released as an e-book in conjunction with The Grammy Museum exhibit "Ringo: Peace & Love," a record-breaking exhibit that opened in June 2013. The exhibit has had more than 90,000 visitors already and is the first major exhibit to focus on a drummer. It will remain open through March 2014. The year also saw Ringo tour with his All Starr Band, first in February to the Pacific Rim and then in October in Latin America, concluding with two Stateside shows at the Palms in Las Vegas; the prestigious French Medal of Honor, being appointed Commander of Arts & Letters in recognition of his musical and artistic contributions; the live DVD "Ringo at the Ryman"; in conjunction with Record Store Day, UMe released a Starr seven-inch vinyl singles collection, featuring “Photograph,” “It Don’t Come Easy” and “(It’s All Down To) Goodnight Vienna.”

Emmylou Harris 'Wrecking Ball' reissue+tour

I really look forward to hearing this, among Harris' more adventurous efforts...

 

Emmylou Harris’s groundbreaking album Wrecking Ball will be reissued April 8 on Nonesuch Records. Produced by Daniel Lanois (U2, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Willie Nelson), Wrecking Ball won the 1996 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.

 

The new three-disc set features the remastered original album, a bonus CD of previously unreleased material, and a DVD of the documentary Building the Wrecking Ball, which includes interviews and studio footage of Harris and Lanois as well as special guests Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Neil Young, Steve Earle, Brian Blade, and others. The album is available to pre-order at nonesuch.com with an exclusive print autographed by Harris.

In celebration of the reissue, Harris and Lanois will embark on an international tour this spring. See below for tour details. 

Originally released in 1995 to critical praise, this new reissue follows a very successful year for Harris, whose new collaborative album with longtime friend and colleague Rodney Crowell, Old Yellow Moon, recently won the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album. 

 

Harris and Crowell were also honored with two awards at the 2013 Americana Music Association Honors & Awards Show—Album of the Year and Duo/Group of the Year. A 13-time Grammy winner and Billboard Century Award recipient, Harris’s career as a singer and songwriter spans 40 years. She has recorded more than 25 albums and has lent her talents to countless fellow artists’ recordings. In recognition of her remarkable career, Harris was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008.

Depeche Mode return to LPs

Rhino Records has started to reissue the back catalog of Depeche Mode on vinyl. Now available are: Some Great Reward, Music For The Masses, Songs Of Faith And Devotion and Black Celebration. Following on March 25 will be A Broken Flame, Ultra, Construction Time Again and Violator. Then on May 27, Speak And Spell, Exciter, Playing The Angel, and Sounds Of The Universe arrive. The albums will come in gatefold sleeves with 180 gram black audiophile vinyl, all containing inserts and liner notes.

Steve Martin and Edie Brickell live DVD, PBS airing

Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, fresh off their recent Grammy win (Best American Roots Song) are set for their first-ever live concert television broadcast on PBS' Great Performances March 4 (check local listings for airings).

In addition, on March 11, Rounder Records will release a deluxe two-disc CD/DVD package 
of the show taped in HD and recorded in 5.1 audio at the historic Fox Performing Arts Center in Riverside, Calif. in the fall of 2013.

With music supervision by the renowned Peter Asher (Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor), the concert features material from Martin and Brickell's Grammy-winning collaborative album Love Has Come For You as well as songs from Rare Bird Alert, Martin's acclaimed project with The Steep Canyon Rangers in addition to music from his Grammy solo album The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo.

Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers featuring Edie Brickell Live also includes two hours of comedy and bluegrass music with four previously unreleased tracks: "Pretty Little One, " "Auden's Train," "The Dance at the Wedding," and "Katie Mae." 

Although these new musical partners have already built widely respected individual bodies of work, their inaugural collaboration is a creative milestone. Martin and Brickell's recent win in the category of Best American Roots Song for "Love Has Come for You" marked Brickell's first Grammy and Martin's fifth, including his two wins in the comedy field.

They are backed by the Steep Canyon Rangers (Mike Ashworth, Mike Guggino, Charles R. Humphrey III, Woody Platt, Nicky Sanders, Graham Sharp).

Augustines album available+tour dates

The new self-titled album by Augustines (previously We Are Augustines) is out now via Votiv/Oxcart and follows the group's 2011 breakthrough debut, Rise Ye Sunken Ships.

A North American headline tour starts at Venue in Vancouver, BC on Feb. 5. The six-week run will include shows at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, CA (February 11) and New York City's Bowery Ballroom (March 3). See below for itinerary or visit weareaugustines.com for further details. 

Billy McCarthy (vocals, guitar), Eric Sanderson (bass, keyboards, vocals) and Rob Allen (drums, percussion) - recorded Augustines with co-producer Peter Katis (The National). 

Where their first record was created in relative isolation, Augustines was made "with the awareness that we weren't going to be alone anymore," says McCarthy. "This is us handing it over to those people that sang our songs back to us all over the world. We turned from the interior and started considering some of the breathtaking moments that happened to us on the road, in different countries."

Clan of Xymox album out next week

Clan of Xymox will release Matters of the Mind, Body and Soul on Metropolis Records on Feb. 11.

With its new studio album, the band explores its signature, melancholic sound, as evidenced by tracks such as “I Close My Eyes” and “I’ll Let You Go.” 

In addition, the group will hit the road, starting with a pair of tour dates in Los Angeles before launching into a worldwide tour. 

Clan of Xymox, formerly known as Xymox, formed in the Netherlands in 1983. In 1985 they would release the first of two studio albums on 4AD Records (Clan Of Xymox, 1985; Medusa, 1987). Xymox would release their next two albums (Twist of Shadows, 1989; Phoenix, 1991) as well as three 12-Inch records (Obsession, 1989; Imagination, 1989 and Blind Hearts, 1989) on Wing Records.

"Obsession" would land itself on both the Billboard Alternative Songs and Billboard Club Play Charts, as "Imagination" would generate Top 40 Radio rotation. "Blind Hearts" would outshine the releases, finding its way to No. 1 on the Billboard Club Play Charts. The album Twist of Shadows would go on to sell over 300,000 records worldwide.

However founding member Ronny Moorings found himself unhappy with the band's direction and opted to experiment with different approach. The band would release two albums independently after the demise of Wing Records (Metamorphosis, 1992; Headclouds, 1993).

Moorings reformed and reinstated the moniker Clan of Xymox in 1997, for the release of their full length album on Tess Records (Hidden Faces, 1997). Clan of Xymox would find their way to their present home at Metropolis Records, who would release the band's next eight albums from 1999 to the present.

New season of Live from the Artists Den

The seventh season of Live from the Artists Den has started running nationwide on public television (check local listings). The music series presents musicians performing in unique and historic venues.

Episode 1 is from French rock band Phoenix, performing at a high school in Austin, TX. Performing at a high school was particularly meaningful for the band. "When you tour in the United States, a lot of the shows are for [people] 21 and over," frontman Thomas Mars said, explaining the band's decision. "We, as teenagers, wouldn't have started a band if we hadn't seen a show when we were 10 or 12."
 
This season marks the series' fifth year on public television and over 50 filmed television episodes. In celebration of these achievements, a "Fifth Anniversary Special" will close the season, featuring highlights from throughout the series' history - from Ringo Starr's star-studded concert at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to Adele's intimate acoustic performance in Santa Monica just days after the release of her record-breaking album, 21.
