In theaters now: 'a-ha: The Movie'

One of the most successful Norwegian pop bands to emerge since the 1980s is the subject of a-ha: The Movie - showing at theaters in major markets now. The documentary chronicles the metamorphosis of “Take On Me” and the group’s rise to fame, then reveals how their big hit was only just the beginning.

The song has amassed 1 billion views on YouTube and 1 billion streams on Spotify. Thus far, the band has released 16 albums, sold more than 55 million copies, won eight MTV Awards, earned a Grammy and an American Music Award nomination, held a Guinness World Record and granted knighthoods.

Directed by Thomas Robsahm and distributed in the US by Lightyear Entertainment, a-ha: The Movie premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2021 to rave reviews and is playing in New York at Quad Cinema, Los Angeles at Laemmle Theatres and additional markets across the US. A complete list is available HERE.

The film’s opening coincides with a-ha’s world tour that includes their first stateside concerts in over a decade, performing in Los Angeles at the Wiltern from April 7-9 and in New York at Radio City Music Hall on April 12. They will return to the US this summer to perform with the LA Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl on July 31. Watch the trailer HERE.

“Take On Me” continues to be popular across generations. After hitting #1 in the US in 1985, the song was sampled for Pitbull and Christina Aguilera's "Feel This Moment" in 2013 (watch Harket join them onstage at the Billboard Awards HERE) and has over a billion views on YouTube and a billion streams on Spotify. In 2012, Furuholmen, Harket and Waktaar-Savoy were appointed Knights of the 1st Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav.
