Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers tour news

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers will play shows throughout North America this summer, including headline appearances at major festivals, arenas and amphitheaters, plus multi-show residencies at the intimate Beacon Theatre in New York City and The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles.

Over the years Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers have enjoyed returning to the intimacy of small venues such as their historic 20 show run in 1997 at the Fillmore in San Francisco, their five night stand at Chicago's Vic Theatre in 2003 and, more recently, two nights in 2011 at the Plaza del Sol Performance Hall at Cal State Northridge to benefit LA local public radio station KCSN.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' 2013 Summer Tour comes as the band takes a break from the studio where they are recording their highly anticipated follow up to 2010's Mojo. The as-yet-untitled new record will be released on Reprise Records in 2014.

Members of The Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers Highway Companions Club will have special opportunities to purchase tickets to concerts on the upcoming tour. Club members will have access to exclusive ticket lotteries for the New York and Los Angeles shows and exclusive presales for the shows in other cities.

Premium Ticket Packages, which include premium seating and exclusive band merchandise, will also be available for all upcoming Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers concerts. For more information about Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers Premium Ticket Packages please visit TomPetty.com.

Iggy and the Stooges album news

"A real fucking group... they also make fucking records. They don't just go and twiddle around on stage to make a bunch of fucking money" -- Iggy Pop

Better 40 years later than never: The follow-up to the first record ever to bear the Iggy and the Stooges logo--the immortal proto-punk masterpiece Raw Power--will finally be out April 30, when Fat Possum Records releases Ready To Die, the all-new Iggy and the Stooges studio album.

Ready To Die finds Iggy Pop, guitarist James Williamson and drummer Scott Asheton reunited for a full album of all-new material for the first time since the Raw Power sessions, with Mike Watt filling in for the late Ron Asheton on bass.

The results are the closest thing to a time capsule to 1973 - or at least to Iggy's subsequent efforts with Williamson, including 1977's Kill City and 1979's New Values - that rock 'n' roll is likely to proffer in this millennium. The new album's opening tracks "Burn" and "Sex & Money" offer blunt and self-explanatory subject matter, single-minded lyrical statements of intent.

An aptly titled "Job" and title track mix Iggy Pop mission statements of angry desperation with guitar pyrotechnics that recall "Search & Destroy."

Just as Iggy exhumed the original Stooges name when he reunited in 2003 with the Asheton brothers, the revival of the Iggy and the Stooges moniker that first appeared on the cover of Raw Power heralded the return of guitarist James Williamson to the fold in 2009, or as Iggy put it then "although 'the Stooges' died with Ron Asheton, there is still 'Iggy and the Stooges'." As far as the decision to record and release a new Iggy and the Stooges album for the first time since 1973, Iggy recently commented:

"My motivation in making any record with the group at this point is no longer personal. It's just a pig-headed fucking thing I have that a real fucking group when they're an older group they also make fucking records. They don't just go and twiddle around on stage to make a bunch of fucking money..."

North American tour dates TBA.

In stores today: The Mavericks, Moody Blues' Justin Hayward

Here's the lowdown on two new albums available today. I've heard The Mavericks' title and it is an excellent reunion effort. As a Moody Blues fan, I'm looking forward to hearing Hayward's material...

Close to 20 years after their first major label release and several subsequent awards, The Mavericks are back with a new album, In Time.

Frontman Raul Malo co-produced it with Niko Bolas (Neil Young, Warren Zevon) while bandmates Robert Reynolds, Paul Deakin, Jerry Dale McFadden and Eddie Perez created the alluring sound (see previous entry on this blog for track details).

The guys stopped by Nashville’s United Record Pressing as the vinyl version was manufactured. Watch the action here: http://smarturl.it/mavsvinylvid

Last month, In Time was a Top 20 debut in Australia and in the UK, the album just hit #2 on iTunes UK Country store and is the #1 best-selling country album on Amazon UK.

On Friday, they are slated to perform “Come Unto Me” on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.

The multi-year GRAMMY, ACM and CMA Vocal Group will hit the road later this spring with their high-energy live show. See themavericksband.com for tour dates.

Spirits Of The Western Sky is the first solo album from Justin Hayward, the longtime lead guitarist and vocalist of The Moody Blues, since 1996.

It features orchestrations by Oscar-winning composer Anne Dudley and delves into country and bluegrass territory during “What You Resist Persists,” “Broken Dream” and “It’s Cold Outside Of Your Heart.”

“Anne [Dudley] is one of the true greats,” states Hayward, “in the same rarefied class of orchestrators as Peter Knight, who was such an inspiration in my early Moody Blues days. I’ve worked with Anne on different projects over the years and it’s always a joy (when she is arranging, all the studio musicians know it’s going to be wonderful).

"I also co-wrote a song with my friend Kenny Loggins. He and I were both on the road and staying in the same hotel. We had a great day playing guitar together and we came up with ‘On The Road To Love.' Kenny plays and sings on the track with me. This album is a labor of love. It’s been my whole life for the last few years. I know we all have many choices nowadays and I thank everyone who gives my album a listen and brings these songs into their collection. Every track is truly from my heart."

Aaron Lewis to cap off Indio, Calif. festival

I caught Lewis perform at the nearby Stagecoach Festival in 2012 and it was one of the most packed tents of the event...

Aaron Lewis will help wrap up the final weekend of the Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival with a performance Saturday in Indio, Calif.

His debut full-length solo album, The Road (Blaster/Warner Nashville Records), co-produced by Lewis and James Stroud, came out last November and entered the Top 10 on the Billboard's Country Albums chart.

It followed the Town Line EP, which bowed at #1 in 2011, the top 40 country hit "Endless Summer" and the mainstream rock charter "Country Boy" alongside Charlie Daniels and George Jones.

The Grammy award-nominated, multi-platinum singer/songwriter/guitarist of rock band Staind mines traditional country on the album, as several are road stories ("75," "State Lines," the title track) ranging from heartwarming to pensive.
The Road is filled with classic grit and invigorating energy.

Nine of the songs were penned by Lewis, with one (“Granddaddy’s Gun”) written by Rhett Atkins, Bobby Pinson and Dallas Davidson. "Forever" addresses the toll time apart can take on a relationship.

[That] is a "pretty honest song about how lonely it can get out on the road,” explained Lewis. “But realizing at the end of it, it really was all just doubt and when you walk through the door and see your wife and kids, it all goes away.”

A live acoustic version of "Forever" is available as part of an iTunes-exclusive deluxe version of the album along with four other live acoustic tracks.

7:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Fantasy Springs Concert Pavilion, Riverside County Fairgrounds, 82-503 Hwy 111, Indio, adults (age 13 - 54) $9; also 8 p.m. Feb. 24 at House of Blues Anaheim, $41-$76.

A busy spring for Johnny Marr

Johnny Marr has announced a North American tour in support of his solo debut The Messenger (Sire/ADA) due out Feb. 26.

The release of The Messenger marks a significant milestone in Marr's distinguished career. First known for his work as the creative force behind The Smiths, Marr has collaborated with Talking Heads, Pet Shop Boys, The The, Electronic and more.

One of the most influential guitarists in rock history, Marr was a member of the Modest Mouse line-up for 2007's chart topping We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank. Similarly, Marr joined The Cribs when they hit the U.K. Top 10 with their 2009 release Ignore The Ignorant.

The Messenger was written and produced by Marr. Based in Portland since 2005, Marr returned to the U.K. in early 2012 to work on the album. Recorded in Manchester and Berlin, it was mastered at Abbey Road by Frank Artwright who recently collaborated with Marr on the re-mastering work for The Smiths' box set Complete.

Earlier this week, it was announced that he will receive the Godlike Genius Award at the upcoming NME Awards in England.
