The War On Drugs re-emerge with new music; 'I Don’t Live Here Anymore' slated for fall

The War On Drugs' next studio release, I Don’t Live Here Anymore, is its first in four years and arrives October 29 on Atlantic Records. A tour is scheduled next year.

A month after The War On Drugs’ A Deeper Understanding received the 2018 Grammy for Best Rock Album, the core of bandleader Adam Granduciel, bassist Dave Hartley, and multi-instrumentalist Anthony LaMarca retreated to upstate New York to jam and cut new demos, working outside of the predetermined roles each member plays in the live setting. These sessions proved highly productive.

It was the start of a dozen-plus session odyssey that spanned three years and seven studios, including some of rock’s greatest sonic workshops like Electric Lady in New York and Los Angeles’ Sound City. Band leader Granduciel worked with co-producer/engineer Shawn Everett.

The “Living Proof” video, directed by filmmaker Emmett Malloy, and shot on 16mm, captures Granduciel at the historic Panoramic studio in Stinson Beach, California.

Track list:

1. Living Proof
2. Harmonia’s Dream
3. Change
4. I Don’t Wanna Wait

The Killers take on the 'Pressure Machine'

The Killers will release their seventh studio album, Pressure Machine, through Island Records on August 13. The album was co-produced by the band, Shawn Everett, and Jonathan Rado (of Foxygen), all of whom worked together on The Killers’ critically-acclaimed album Imploding The Mirage, released last year.

When the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the promotional run and worldwide tour for The Killers’ 2020 album Imploding the Mirage, “everything came to this grinding halt,” says frontman Brandon Flowers. “And it was the first time in a long time for me that I was faced with silence. And out of that silence this record began to bloom, full of songs that would have otherwise been too quiet and drowned out by the noise of typical Killers records.”

Pressure Machine lives squarely in Flowers’ hometown of Nephi, Utah, a close-knit community of 5300 people with no traffic lights, a rubber plant, wheat fields, and the West Hills. Nephi is the place Flowers spent his formative years (10-16), saying “had it not been for advancements in the automotive industry, Nephi in the '90s could have been the 1950s.”

The album’s songs are based on the memories and stories of people that impacted him growing up, interspersed with commentary from current Nephi locals about their town. “We were discussing [Brandon] moving to Nephi as a kid and being stuck in the middle of nowhere,” says the band’s drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. “And during Covid-19, it started to feel like we were all in the middle of nowhere.”

Concurs Flowers, “I discovered this grief that I hadn’t dealt with,” he says, “many memories of my time in Nephi are tender. But the ones tied to fear or great sadness were emotionally charged. I’ve got more understanding now than when we started the band, and hopefully I was able to do justice to these stories and these lives in this little town that I grew up in.”

Pressure Machine’s album cover image was shot on the highway just outside Nephi, taken as photographer Wes Johnson passed a roadside inspirational display set up by a local Baptist church. Johnson took dozens of incredible images of Flowers’ hometown throughout the early part of 2021, many of which are featured in the album’s packaging for the physical edition.

The Killers will be touring in 2022 with former Smiths and Modest Mouse guitarist Johnny Marr as the opening act. Tickets for these shows go on sale on Friday, July 23, at 10 am local time via the band’s website.

Ben Platt news

Grammy, Tony and Emmy Award-winning musician/actor Ben Platt shared his new single, “Happy To Be Sad,” through Atlantic Records HERE. Produced by Michael Pollack (Katy Perry) and Zach Skelton (Jonas Brothers), “Happy To Be Sad” heralds the arrival of Platt’s second album, Reverie, due August 13.

It came incredibly naturally and was an immediate expression of the mixed emotions I was feeling that day- the sadness to be away from him against the joy and celebration of finding someone I love enough to make me feel that way.”

In addition, Platt is slated for a performance on NBC’s TODAY as part of their 2021 Citi Music Series, set for August 13. Additional TV appearances will be announced soon.
