Coachella '17 spotlight: Blossoms

This is a band that I will definitely check out at Coachella this weekend...

Following their massive success back home in the UK – a #1 record, sold out tours, every major UK festival (Glastonbury, T In The Park, Reading and Leeds) and heaps of critical acclaim – breakout British act Blossoms now have their sights firmly set on America.

Fresh off their sold out UK tour, which saw them playing their biggest headline shows to date, the band just kicked off their U.S. headline run and play their way down the West Coast to Coachella where they will make their festival debut this Saturday.

In between the two-weekend festival, the quintet will bring their thrilling live show to Los Angeles, San Diego and Phoenix before heading back to Coachella for the second weekend.

They will then join Two Door Cinema Club as main support on their April-May run, which includes a stop in New York at the newly Brooklyn Steel. This summer Blossoms will be a fixture at the major summer festivals with performances at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Firefly and Governor’s Ball. Back home the legendary Stone Roses have tapped the Stockport lads as main support for the band’s monumental sold out show at the 90,000 capacity Wembley Arena in London on June 17.

Blossoms’ eponymous debut album was released in August on Virgin EMI and stormed to the top of the charts where it spent two week at #1 on the strength of their radio smash “Charlemagne.” To date the album has sold nearly 100K units, earning them the second best British debut album of 2016.

Hailed as the UK’s most exciting new act, the album was produced by James Skelly of The Coral, has garnered rave reviews. A testament to the band’s popularity and impact: they were nominated for both “Best Breakthrough Act” at the BRIT Awards and “Best New Act” at the VO5 NME Awards.

Blossoms are an alliance of best friends, all born in the same hospital, who pooled their resources in 2013 after playing independently in separate local groups. Their name comes from the name of a local pub outside of Manchester. Their sound is a perfect balance between Josh Dewhurt’s crystalline guitar, Myles Kellock’s futuristic synths, Charlie Salt (bass) and Joe Donovan’s (drums) robust rhythm section andTom Ogden’s star-bound vocals, a rich Northern England croon vibrating in its own slipstream between The Verve’s Richard Ashcroft and Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys.

“All the songs are very personal to me as they’re about my relationships,” says Ogden. “I tend to write my best lyrics when I’m miserable and heartbroken, but placing that over music that’s very melodic, very pop, but with our own strange twist.” The band have earned comparisons to everyone from Echo and the Bunnymen and The Stone Roses to Depeche Mode and The Doors, shapeshifting between psychedelia, synth-pop and powerhouse indie, a mercurial sound at once familiar and unique.
