311's Nick Hexum unveils solo CD plans

311 vocalist Nick Hexum has announced an Oct. 1 release for My Shadow Pages, his first  solo album.

Recorded in Los Angeles with producer Jim Scott (Wilco, Tom Petty, Jason Mraz), the project—billed as The Nick Hexum Quintet—is a departure from Hexum’s work with the multi-platinum-selling 311, blending elements of funk, pop, jazz and classic rock.

Hexum and Yahoo! are giving fans a sneak preview of the album with the track “Blame the Sky,” which can be heard at http://music.yahoo.com/blogs/stop-the-presses/exclusive-first-listen-311-vocalist-nick-hexum-solo-141433908.html

“311 is, and always will be my main priority,” says Hexum. “We just launched our annual summer tour and we’ll have a new 311 album coming in 2014. But this Nick Hexum Quintet album is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. It’s a passion project that allows me to spread my wings as a songwriter, vocalist and guitarist. I’m really excited for people to hear it.”

My Shadow Pages will be released on Hexum’s own label, What Have You Records via a partnership with INgrooves/Fontana. 311 fans might recognize the name as the label through which the band self-released its first three albums (Dammit!, Unity, Hydroponic) before signing with Capricorn in 1992.

In addition to his work with 311, Hexum has produced, recorded or mixed tracks for Seal, Jason Mraz, Lenny Kravitz, No Doubt and Pepper. He also produced the Gold-selling soundtrack for the film 50 First Dates.
