Sigur Ros film experiments, U.S. tour dates

Sigur Rós, whose new album Valtari is due May 29 on XL Recordings, have announced the “Mystery Film Experiment.”

The band has given more than a dozen film makers a modest budget and asked them to create visual representations for songs from Valtari, bypassing the usual artistic approval process.

All videos from the series will be premiered on Vevo. The first, “Ég anda,” made by Ragnar Kjartansson, is up now on the site.

Films will be rolled out every couple of weeks throughout the summer.

"We never meant our music to come ready packaged with a pre-programmed emotional response.” says bassist Georg Holm. “We don’t want to tell anyone how to feel and what to take from it as they listen. With the films, we have literally no idea what the directors are going to come back with. None of them know what the others are doing, so it could be interesting.”

Among the dozen filmmakers working without brief are award-winning directors and artists Alma Har’el, John Cameron Mitchell and Ryan McGinley, as well as Icelandic performance artist Kjartansson; the video makers behind some of the best-loved Sigur Rós clips, Arni & Kinski; and Ramin Bahrani, described by Roger Ebert as “the director of the decade.”

Valtari is streaming now via NPR Music’s “First Listen.”

In other news, Sigur Ros returns to North America for their first live shows in more than three years this summer. While the 2008 tour comprised the core four piece, the upcoming concerts will feature up to 11 people on stage.
