U2 reissue news: 'How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb'

To mark the 20th anniversary of U2’s critically-acclaimed eight-time Grammy-winning album How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, Interscope Records will release a shadow album titled How To Re-Assemble An Atomic Bomb, which includes new, unreleased songs discovered in the archive of the original album recording sessions.

Set for a standalone release on November 29, the first songs to be made available from How To Re-Assemble An Atomic Bomb are ‘Country Mile’ and ‘Picture Of You (X + W)’, listen here. Watch lyric videos here.

To further celebrate the anniversary, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb has now been remastered for the first time, a process which saw the band go back to the vault to revisit those early ‘00s recording sessions, a period of intense creativity for U2 in the studio, as well as a time of deep personal and artistic reflection following the passing of Bono’s father Bob in 2001.

This special 20th anniversary edition – out November 22 - will include the bonus track ‘Fast Cars’. See below for a complete list of formats. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (Re-Assemble Edition) – featuring both How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb + How To Re-Assemble An Atomic Bomb - will be available as a dual digital release on November 22.

The Edge said in a press release about How To Re-Assemble An Atomic Bomb – “The sessions for ‘How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb’ were such a creative period for the band, we were exploring so many song ideas in the studio. We were inspired to revisit our early music influences, and it was a time of deep personal introspection for Bono who was attempting to process - dismantle - the death of his father.

For this anniversary edition I went into my personal archive to see if there were any unreleased gems and I hit the jackpot. We chose ten that really spoke to us. Although at the time we left these songs to one side, with the benefit of hindsight we recognize that our initial instincts about them being contenders for the album were right, we were onto something.

What you’re getting on this shadow album is that raw energy of discovery, the visceral impact of the music, a sonic narrative, a moment in time, the exploration and interaction of four musicians playing together in a room… this is the pure U2 drop.”

How To Re-Assemble An Atomic Bomb is a collection of 10 songs taken from the original recording sessions for ‘How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb.’ The shadow album includes new, never-before-heard or previously released songs - ‘Treason’, ‘Evidence Of Life’, ‘Country Mile’ and ‘Happiness’; plus a song called ‘Luckiest Man In The World’ - familiar to fans under its working title ‘Mercy’, an early demo of which was leaked online almost 20 years ago - which now gets its official release; as well as five newly remastered songs - ‘Picture Of You (X+W)’, ‘I Don't Wanna See You Smile’, ‘Are We Gonna Wait Forever?’, ‘Theme From The Batman’ and ‘All Because Of You 2’ - all collected together for the first time to mark the 20th anniversary of ‘How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb’.

How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb is U2’s eleventh studio album. Released by Island Records / Interscope on November 22nd 2004, it went to No. 1 in 34 countries around the world, including Ireland, the UK and the US.

Described by Bono at the time as “our first rock album”, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb was recorded at the band’s studio in Hanover Quay, Dublin and the South of France, and produced by Steve Lilywhite, with additional production from Chris Thomas, Flood, Jacknife Lee, Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, Nellee Hooper and Carl Glanville.

The 11 tracks included the songs ‘Vertigo’ and ‘Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own’, both of which debuted at No. 1 in the UK charts, the first time a U2 album produced two chart topping singles. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb and its singles won a total of eight Grammy Awards, sweeping all of the categories in which the band were nominated, with ‘Vertigo’ alone winning three in 2005, including Best Rock Song. The band were the night’s big winners in 2006, taking home the Grammy for Album of the Year, as well as Song of the Year for ‘Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own’ and Best Rock Song for ‘City of Blinding Lights’, with Steve Lilywhite also winning Producer of the Year.

The remastered How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (20th Anniversary Edition) will be released in the following formats on November 22nd: Vinyl 8LP Super Deluxe Collectors Boxset (Limited Edition); Vinyl 2LP; Exclusive D2C 2LP Black & Red Ink Spot Vinyl (Limited Edition); 5CD Super Deluxe Collectors Boxset (Limited Edition); CD; and Exclusive Red & Black Cassette (Limited Edition). The digital releases include HTDAAB remastered (12 tracks); and HTDAAB & HTRAAB (22 tracks). How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (Re-Assemble Edition) – featuring both How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb + How To Re-Assemble An Atomic Bomb - will be available as a dual digital release on November 22.

Thompson Twins set November for 40th anniversary edition of 'Into the Gap'

I reviewed Tom Bailey's Thompson Twins in concert recently with Thomas Dolby (see elsewhere on this blog). I'm really looking forward to this...

‘Into The Gap,’
the fourth album by Thompson Twins, was initially released in 1984. A multi-platinum album on both sides of the Atlantic, it stayed at #1 in the UK for three weeks and was top 10 in the US. The album produced four hit singles: ‘Hold Me Now’, a top 5 smash in the UK and the US, as well as ‘Doctor Doctor’, ‘You Take Me Up’, and ‘Sister Of Mercy’.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of ‘Into The Gap’, the album has been remastered at Abbey Road by Frank Arkwright and will be reissued as a 3CD set on Nov. 8. Pre-order HERE

WATCH THE 4K REMASTER OF THE ‘HOLD ME NOW’ VIDEO HERE

The new expanded collection features new sleeve notes with interviews with all three original band members, a limited-edition red vinyl LP, a digital deluxe version and Dolby Atmos digital and Blu-ray exclusive to superdeluxeedition.com. David Kosten mixed the Dolby Atmos version.

Echo & The Bunnymen to issue expanded edition of 1999's 'What Are You Going To Do With Your Life?’ on CD and LP debut in November

A quarter century since its first release, London Records are set to reissue Echo & The Bunnymen’s album ‘What Are You Going To Do With Your Life?’ on vinyl for the first time on November 29, both on crystal clear vinyl and on limited edition rust orange vinyl.

Fully remastered, the 1999 album will also be reissued on a 34-track double CD edition featuring B-sides, alternative takes and live versions of Bunnymen classics and tracks from the album.

‘What Are You Going to Do with Your Life?’ is the eighth studio album by the Liverpool band and the follow-up to their 1997 comeback album ‘Evergreen’, which saw original Bunnymen members Ian McCulloch, Will Sergeant and Les Pattison reunite in the studio for the first time in almost a decade.

Continuing the trajectory set with ‘Evergreen’, the songs from ‘What Are You Going to Do with Your Life?’ feature strings performed by the London Metropolitan Orchestra.

Speaking in 1999 about the album’s organic approach McCulloch states: “After ‘Evergreen’ I was writing all this kind of stuff, and I thought, we're just going to go in there, and half of it will be very song-orientated, and the other will be ‘Heaven Up Here.’”

“The title ‘What Are You Going To Do With Your Life?’ is more of an eternal question than where do we come from? It's where the sod are we going to go? It dawned on me that I can write these words that don't go above people's heads. It wasn't like ‘I'm going to simplify lyrics,’ it's just I felt confident of who I am.”

“My solo period was kind of learning that I don't write abstract lyrics very well and never really did. It's still, for me, the Leonard Cohens and the John Lennon’s… It's like, how much simpler can you get than that? But it's one of the most poetic things I've ever heard in a song, because it resonates, and you know exactly what he's on about.”

The album features a final turn on bass on “Fools Like Us” from Les Pattison, who would leave the band in 1998, and guests Fun Lovin’ Criminals, who provide horns on “Get in the Car” and “When It All Blows Over”.

‘What Are You Going to Do with Your Life?’ featured two singles, “Get in The Car” and fan favourite “Rust’”, which was an NME Single Of The Week and the band’s final UK Top 40 hit.

The band would tour extensively in 1999 in support of the album, and the expanded 2CD edition features previously unreleased live tracks from shows of the time including The Improv Theatre in London (recorded for Radio One’s John Peel Show) and Cream in Liverpool, including Bunnymen classics ‘The Killing Moon’, ‘Lips Like Sugar’, ‘Back Of Love’ and ‘The Cutter’.

Illustrated Music Biographies on Bruce Springsteen, Van Halen and Prince Hit the Right Notes

Three recent coffee table books spotlight rock and R&B music legends who all released blockbuster albums 40 years ago.

Title: Bruce Springsteen @75
Author: Gillian G. Gaar
(Motorbooks/The Quarto Group)

The Boss celebrated his 75th birthday this week. So, it’s a perfect time to detail Gillian G. Gaar’s engaging 200-page book about Bruce Springsteen. From growing up in Freehold, New Jersey, initial success with Born to Run and the mega-stardom of 1984’s Born in the U.S.A. to solo ventures, the E Street Band reunion, subsequent music releases and the current post-COVID world tour, the author explores the musician’s life and career through 75 important moments. These are divided into five sections: Building the Dream, 1949-1974; Catching Fire, 1974-1982; Swinging for the Fences, 1983-1994; Regrouping, 1995-2007 and No Surrender, 2008-2023. E Street members Steven Van Zandt and Springsteen’s wife Patti Scialfa get a few pages devoted to their outside musical pursuits too. The book comes housed in a hardbound slipcase, sports 400 photos (concerts, album/singles art, memorabilia), two gatefolds (a timeline, illustration), plus an exclusive pullout poster from a 1977 New York show and an 8x10 live glossy color print.

Title: Van Halen at 50
Author: Martin Popoff
(Motorbooks/The Quarto Group)

During the introduction to Van Halen at 50, Martin Popoff writes that his goal was to accentuate the group’s experience, including “all the giddiness, the creative madness and the tragedy.” He doesn’t pull any punches while describing 50 significant milestones or highlights from Van Halen’s career. The 1974 formation in Pasadena, Calif., rising in the Sunset Strip ranks, achieving a career apex with the 1984 album (featuring AOR radio staples “Jump,” “Panama” and “I’ll Wait”), replicating success with new lead singer Sammy Hagar, reunions, the death of guitar virtuoso Edward Van Halen in 2020 and more are all covered here. The author balances descriptions about the fun times with ones pointing out shortcomings (brief LP running times, excess instrumentals). Also nestled among the 192 pages and multiple large photos are sidebars on Eddie’s finger-tapping technique, album art, a dream album scenario of rarities, a gatefold VH timeline, discography and more.

Title: Prince + Purple Rain – 40 Years
Author: Andrea Swensson
(Motorbooks/The Quarto Group)

The Summer of ’84 saw the release of Prince’s Purple Rain and his movie debut of the same name. Minneapolis author/journalist/podcast host Andrea Swensson describes her 176-page book a “love letter” to the eclectic artist’s career-defining, sixth studio album. Indeed, this account is more personal and authoritative than most, drawing from her interviews with members of Prince’s band The Revolution, his collaborators, and friends, not to mention Swensson’s visits to Paisley Park, where she once met Prince. The impressive visuals (including 200+ live, candid and memorabilia photos) are courtesy of local veteran photographers and Prince collectors worldwide. Actress Maya Rudolph (“SNL”) contributed the forward. Prince enthusiasts will marvel at all the details, especially the purple velvet hardbound slipcase.

Johnnyswim have a new album, full tour set for next year

Johnnyswim, composed of the duo Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano Ramirez, unveiled news of the February 7 release of their fifth full-length studio album When The War Is Over — pre-save/preorder HERE. I
t explores themes of physical and mental health, and self-realization.

“This album means so much to us because it represents a significant chapter in our lives. Both of us have been navigating our own emotional and physical health challenges over the last few years, and it’s a testament to that journey. In many ways, this album reflects our acceptance of the challenges we’ve faced, embracing the honesty we've always pursued in our songwriting. It’s for anyone who has faced their own battles—physical or emotional—and is looking for music to walk with them through it.” — Johnnyswim

Out now is “Los Feliz,” a song from the new album that was born out of one of the band’s “Songs With Strangers” podcast episodes. This particular episode (Episode 7) was with the duo's friend and songwriter Britten Newbill (Tori Kelly, Olivia Dean). They wrote “Los Feliz” during the podcast and once in the studio with the band, Abner shared that a guitar riff from the recording session “became the soul of the song.”

The idea to create When The War Is Over with almost entirely live instruments was a sonic shift for the band. “One thing we were very excited to do on this album, that we haven’t done since our first album, is every instrument has eyeballs,” continued Abner. “Every instrument is played by a person. There’s very few, if any, synthetic instruments – the piano is a person at the piano, the drums are a person at the drums, etc. There’s no samples, there’s no whatever. We almost always have real musicians in the room, but very rarely, not since our first album, have we had them all in the same room at the same time. We recorded this very old school. We were discovering the songs as opposed to just having a clear picture of what the production must sound like. We sat with our favorite musicians, our band, in a room, and we discovered the songs as we went along.”

In addition to “Los Feliz,” the band has released a few other album tracks as part of their “New Music Monday” series including “She Checks The Weather.” As Amanda has shared, the song was written as “an ode to the battle of chronic illness” — something she has personally faced after two bouts of COVID-19 that left her with lingering symptoms, which she and her doctors are still struggling to identify and treat.

Also out now is “Frank Gehry,” a song about finding contentment in what you have and resisting the urge to measure yourself against others. “Frank Gehry” came out in July and was featured in a recent CBS Mornings segment that visited the band in their home in LA to discuss their lives, love, and family as well as their journey as songwriters and musicians. And then there’s “Alchemy,” a song that delves into the transformative power of love and conveys how growth often comes through challenges.

In addition to the sonic shift fans will hear on When The War Is Over, they’ll hear Amanda and Abner’s friend and Houston rapper Tobe Nwigwe adding vocals to album track “Dopamine.” “I’m Alright” features Abner reflecting on his personal journey and his family’s experience of leaving Cuba. They follow this with a cover of “Cuando Salí de Cuba” - a 1967 song by Cuban artist Luis Aguilé.

Track listing:

2. Dopamine feat. Tobe Nwigwe
3. Monte Carlo
4. Psilocybin
5. I’m Alright

7. She Checks The Weather

Snow Patrol returns to tour North America after five-year gap

Snow Patrol's first North American tour since 2019 will start in March. Fans can register for artist presale access by signing up for the band’s mailing list on their website. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday at 10am local time. See below for the full list of dates or visit the band’s official website for more details.

“We’re so excited to get back to tour in North America again! For the first ten years of our career, we didn’t get to play in the US or Canada and even though, now, we have been touring there for twenty years we still feel like we’re making up for lost time. We grew up listening to so much music from the US and Canada so we feel like it’s in our blood. We can’t wait to come back again next year and discover more of the continent and have new adventures with a brand-new album” – Gary Lightbody

On September 13, the band released their new album The Forest Is The Path featuring the new single “Everything’s Here And Nothing’s Lost.” The album landed at #1 on the U.K. Official Charts. They previously held the #1 spot with Eyes Open (2006).

The Forest is the Path is the Northern Irish band’s eighth studio album and marks their return following 2018’s Wildness. It is produced by Fraser T Smith (Adele) and the band. Now comprising the trio of Gary Lightbody, Nathan Connolly and Johnny McDaid, Snow Patrol previously offered the singles “The Beginning,” “This Is The Sound Of Your Voice” and “All.”

Co-written by Nathan Connolly, Gary Lightbody and Johnny McDaid, the album features contributions from Fraser T Smith, Will Reynolds, Roy Kerr and Troy Van Leeuwen (QOTSA). Artwork for the album and single are paintings by the band’s Lightbody. The frontman calls the album “the biggest sounding record we have ever made.”

Snow Patrol kicked off their return in the summer with a performance at Rock Werchter in Belgium before playing to 30,000 fans at a sold-out Thomond Park Stadium in Limerick.

311 band news

Popular alternative rock band 311 - formed in 1990 in Omaha, Nebraska - is set to release its 14th studio album, Full Bloom, on October 25. Pre-save Full Bloom here.

The group just released the new track and visualizer for “Need Somebody,” out now. The track speaks to avoiding isolation and staying connected with the people that love you. Watch the Official VIsualizer “Need Somebody” here. 311 recently wrapped a headlining U.S. run of their “Unity Tour.”

Full Bloom is the follow up to 2019's Voyager in 2019, which spawned the single "Good Feeling." The first single off the new album, “You’re Gonna Get It,” is the band’s highest charting song in 13 years, breaking into the top 15 at Alternative Radio. The introspective track reflects upon the realization that all actions have consequences, even if they aren’t immediate and has over 1M streams since its release this summer.

“We hope fans can take from this album 311’s message of positivity and unity. In today’s world it’s so easy to become alienated by the pressures of everyday life. Whether it’s social media, stress at work, an illness, the list goes on.” The band shares with us, “It’s so important to stay open with your loved ones and community so we can all thrive in full bloom” shares the band, in a statement.

A limited edition clear blue swirl vinyl of Full Bloom is available at roughtrade.com.

Earlier this year, the band sold out the bi-annual 311 cruise in under 24 hours. The event will set sail in March 2025. The 30th anniversary reissue of 311's 1994 album Grassroots saw a 40,000% surge in sales, reentering Billboard’s list of best-selling albums at #34 with the vinyl charting at #11.

311 also toured Japan for the first time in 10 years, along with a tour of Europe that included top selling festivals and headline shows in the UK and Europe. This was their first time back in the region in 20 years, and a return to Australia for the Good Things festival and Jakarta for Everblast Festival are scheduled. For more info, visit 311.com.

All told, 10 albums by 311 have reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Top 200 Sales Chart - and nine of their singles have reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Alternative Radio Chart - including three #1 singles: “Down,” “Love Song,” and “Don't Tread On Me” - along with ”Amber,” “All Mixed Up,” “Come Original,” “Creatures For Awhile,” “Hey You,” and “Sunset in July.”

311 is Nick Hexum (vocals/guitar), Chad Sexton (drums), Tim Mahoney (guitar), SA Martinez (vocals/DJ), and P-Nut (bass).

Gwen Stefani reveals new single and 'Bouquet' track listing

Gwen Stefani - who drew raves this past spring from her reunion with No Doubt at Coachella Festival -
has released the single, "Somebody Else's." It is from her fifth solo album, Bouquet, out November 15. The album's track listing has also been revealed.

On September 30, the singer Stefani will join Jimmy Kimmel Live! for a debut performance of the track, available now at all digital retailers via Interscope Records.

Pre-order Bouquet HERE.

Stefani recorded "Somebody Else's" backed by a full live band at Smoakstack Studios with producer Scott Hendricks. It's the same team she worked with on the rest of Bouquet.

The album formats include limited edition sky blue vinyl with alternate cover art through gwenstefani.com, fruit punch-colored vinyl with poster and alternate artwork exclusively through Target, champagne-colored vinyl through www.recordstoreday.com, CD and digital.

"Purple Irises," with husband Blake Shelton, came out earlier this year and went top 20 at adult contemporary and adult pop radio stations. Listen HERE.

In a press release, Stefani said "'Purple Irises' is a song that comes from the idea that when you plant something you are planting hope and watching love grow...Weathering all the different seasons of growth. We are in this together, we planted the seeds together and we are growing together.”

"We love this song so much,” said Shelton. "It’s a song Gwen wrote with a couple of friends of hers, and I fell in love with it the first time I heard it. She knew there was something different about it and asked me to come in and sing with her. My longtime producer, Scott Hendricks, produced it, and Gwen’s been wanting to work with him for a long time now, and it’s turned into this really cool and different song that can live anywhere."

Stefani co-wrote all but one of the songs on the new album - "All Your Fault" - penned by Diane Warren.

Track listing:

1. Somebody Else’s
2. Bouquet
3. Pretty
4. Empty Vase
5. Marigolds

The Chameleons are back with another EP set for October

“These songs were amongst the very earliest songs we got together pre-Peel session in 1981, but were discarded at the time due to them feeling unfinished,” says vocalist/bassist Mark Burgess of THE CHAMELEONS about the five-song EP TOMORROW REMEMBER YESTERDAY which will be released on October 11 digitally by Metropolis Records and can be pre-ordered here.

The vinyl edition of the EP will be available through the Berlin based label Aufnahme+Wiedergabe with a limited number also available via Metropolis Records mail order.

With its release posited between the Where Are You? EP (their first studio release of new music in over 20 years was released in May 2024) and their upcoming album Arctic Moon due out in 2025, this EP of archival tracks is dusted off, refreshed, and re-recorded, creating a nostalgic bridge between their two new releases.

The idea of releasing Tomorrow Remember Yesterday as an EP was conceived at the annual Christmas Manchester gathering in 2023 where the band played two nights at Manchester, UK’s famed venue The Ritz. “I had the idea of revisiting some of these very early songs but recording them in a way that reflects who the band is now, rather than who we were in 1981,” he says. “We were so happy with the results.”

The archival EP’s first track “The Fan & the Bellows” highlights the band’s penchant for creating epic soundscapes with searing guitar textures. “Most of them have been released over time in their original form on various retrospectives and such like but were never really intended to be,” he explains. “‘The Fan & The Bellows’ was originally the choice of CBS/EPIC as the debut single, but the band wasn’t happy with the results and rejected that in favour of the newest song at the time, ‘In Shreds’.”

“Nostalgia”, whose chorus “tomorrow remember yesterday” is the origin of the EP’s title, was also resurrected. Recorded during the same sessions as “The Fan and the Bellows” with Steve Lillywhite (Talking Heads, Psychedelic Furs, U2), both songs originally appeared on a retrospective release by Statik Records which released the band’s earliest records.

Currently on the road in the UK, the band return to the U.S. for a round of dates in the Midwest and the Southeast next month (see below).

2025 will be marked with the release of Arctic Moon, a brand-new album by The Chameleons which will be their first studio full-length since 2001’s Why Call it Anything. “It’s quite different from anything Chameleons has done before, and I know this will probably polarise the legacy audience, but we’re quite excited about how it’s developing,” Burgess says. “I think the songwriting is much more mature in a lot of ways, which is to be expected, I suppose, given our age, but I, for one, really believe we’re taking the band forward, and I’m quite excited about it.”

Tribute album to drummer Don Heffington (Lone Justice, Emmylou Harris) out next month featuring Jackson Browne, Fiona Apple, more

Nine Mile Records and Clover Music Group have announced Tonight I’ll Go Down Swingin’: A Tribute to Don Heffington, a musical salute to the late prolific drummer and singer-songwriter, due out October 18.

The new tribute album features performances of Heffington originals from collaborators and friends including Fiona Apple, Jackson Browne, Buddy Miller, John C. Reilly, Watkins Family Hour and more. Proceeds from Tonight I’ll Go Down Swingin’ will benefit Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, a charity that helps musicians and industry members in need of health care and all-around aid.

Browne’s take on the previously unreleased Heffington cut “Everywhere I Look,” can be heard here:

“I knew Don from the Largo, playing with the Watkins Family Hour,” shares Browne in a statement, referring to the iconic Los Angeles venue. “His drumming was so amazingly solid and assured, and he had the combined strength and sensitivity to make that quiet stage and all those acoustic instruments work. Sometimes I would see him at the guitar-pulls at Benmont Tench’s house, sitting there with a snare drum between his knees, adding his rhythm and feel to the songwriters who were playing various guitars, Benmont on piano. I didn’t realize that he wrote songs until I heard his album Gloryland, and I was so taken by his originality. Eventually, I got to hear him do his own show, and again, was just knocked out by the songs, and that Bakersfield Beatnik persona.

"There’s no accounting for why somebody becomes a songwriter. But I think of him as inhabiting the same Los Angeles as Warren Zevon, Lowell George and Tom Waits. The breadth and depth of his songwriting are on display here in this loving tribute by his friends. He asked me to sing ‘Everywhere I Look.’ The arrangement is based closely on the demo he gave me, with Sebastian Steinberg playing bass. For the guitar, I called on Greg Leisz, who played with Don and Sebastian in the Watkins Family Hour. Lots of people knew Don longer and better than I did. I’m so grateful for the times I got to play with him. I really miss him. He is, and always will be, an inspiration.”

Produced by Sheldon Gomberg (Ben Harper, Rickie Lee Jones) and Sebastian Steinberg (Fiona Apple, Iron & Wine), Tonight I’ll Go Down Swingin’ also features co-writes with Tom Waits (“Seeds On Hard Ground”) and Allen Ginsberg (“Put a Kiss and a Tear in Yr. Letter”), as well as a rendition of Porter Wagoner’s “Tonight I’ll Go Down Swingin’” by Heffington himself. The album closes with a cover of Van Morrison’s “Irish Heartbeat” by Heffington and his daughter Laura.

Heffington first rose to prominence as part of Emmylou Harris' Hot Band and then as co-founding member of the country-rock band Lone Justice in the 1980s, which toured with U2. In addition to a revered solo career and time as a member of the Watkins Family Hour, Heffington's production skills and drumming prowess made him a sought-after musician over the years. He collaborated with some of the biggest names in music including Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams, Dwight Yoakam and many others.

In 2021, Heffington passed at the age of 70 due to complications from leukemia.

Herb Alpert news

I was fortunate to interview Herb Alpert late last year in a feature that ran in January (see elsewhere on this blog). Read on for info about his latest album...

Legendary musician, artist, record label executive, and philanthropist Herb Alpert has shared a new single “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” ahead of the release of his 50th studio album, aptly titled 50, on Friday.

The Elvis Presley hit serves as the album’s oldest composition. Written in 1927, it embodies everything Alpert looks for in a tune: “simple and striking at the same time,” he says. Alpert gives the melody the most space of any on the album; his trumpet line cuts through, stark and intimate, over a bed of piano and synthesized strings.

“Are You Lonesome Tonight?” follows lead single “Dancing Down 50th Street,” a dance track mixing the flavor of his Tijuana Brass days with a modern groove, and also one of Alpert’s several brand new original compositions featured on the album.

50 will mark a milestone in Alpert’s storied six-decade music career, and will also commemorate another significant landmark as it celebrates 50 years of marriage to his wife, collaborator, and touring partner, Lani Hall, their golden anniversary.

"I am fortunate to still be exploring and having fun making music,” stated Alpert. “When I first started recording, I had a one-track wire recorder. Today I make music using digital recording with unlimited recording tracks. The one thing, for me, that has always remained the same, no matter one-track, two-tracks or 100 tracks, is that it is ALWAYS about finding a great song or melody. A great song or melody recorded on one-track will always be a great song.”

Many of the songs on 50 date back to the 1950s, including pop-vocal, rock’n’roll, and jazz favorites. It was the decade when Alpert got his start in the record industry, still a few years out from his career-making success with the Tijuana Brass, the young songwriter was learning lessons that helped him shape his signature musical voice.

Alpert is doing select concert dates through the end of the year (see below).

02) Sh-Boom
03) Are You Lonesome Tonight?

ABOUT HERB ALPERT & THE HERB ALPERT FOUNDATION:

Alpert’s extraordinary musicianship has earned him 9 GRAMMY® Awards (the latest from his 2014 album Steppin’ Out), 15 Gold albums, 14 Platinum albums and has sold over 72 million records. Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass propelled his sound into the pop music limelight, at one point outselling the Beatles two to one. Alpert has a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, and was awarded the National Medal of Arts by Barack Obama in 2013. Alpert also has a second career as an abstract expressionist painter and sculptor with group and solo exhibitions around the United States and Europe.

As an industry leader, Alpert’s commitment to artists with personal vision guided A&M Records (with partner Jerry Moss) from a Hollywood garage operation into one of the most successful independent record labels in music history, with stars including Janet Jackson, Quincy Jones, Cat Stevens, The Carpenters, Carole King, Sheryl Crow, Peter Frampton, The Police and scores of others.

Through the Herb Alpert Foundation, Herb and Lani have dedicated their lives to philanthropy, funding programs that help bring creativity to young students and keep creativity alive for all the arts, for artists young and old, including jazz education and programs that teach compassion and well-being. May 2022 marked the 28th anniversary of the Herb Alpert Award in the Arts celebrating 140 awardees over the past 28 years. 2021 also brought the opening of the newly remodeled Harlem School of the Arts at the Herb Alpert Center, funded entirely by Herb and Lani Alpert. During the pandemic, the foundation dramatically increased its emergency funding to artists in need through organizations such as Chrysalis, the Jazz Foundation, the Good People’s Fund and Artists Relief.

Back on vinyl next month: Gang of Four’s 'Songs of the Free’

On October 25, Matador Records will reissue Gang Of Four’s third album ‘Songs of the Free’ on vinyl. The digital remaster is available now. The album is pressed on standard black vinyl and has been remastered from the original tapes by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road with supervision by Jon King.

Bassist Dave Allen, drummer Hugo Burnham, guitarist Andy Gill, and singer Jon King recorded their first two albums, ‘Entertainment’ (1979) and ‘Solid Gold’ (1981). Allen departed the band and Sara Lee joined to record third album, ‘Songs of the Free.’ The album includes “Call Me Up,” a live favorite, and their biggest “hit,” “I Love A Man In Uniform,” which climbed the UK charts until the BBC decided to ban it during the Falklands War, presumably because it might be considered critical to the military. The song received heavy airplay in the US, as well, though primarily from stations that saw it as a pro-military dance song.

The album was recorded at Ridge Farm Studios in Surrey and co-produced by Jon Howlett, whose experiences recording bands like OMD and A Flock of Seagulls may have helped with the album’s sound register as slightly less punk and a touch more new wave.

Following ‘Songs of the Free,’ Burnham departed the band. Andy Gill and Jon King continued on to release ‘Hard’ in 1983 before disbanding in 1984. Andy and Jon reunited to release Mall in 1991 and ‘Shrinkwapped’ in 1995.

In 2004, the original quartet reformed for tour dates and released ‘Return The Gift’ (2005). Gill’s untimely death in February 2020 was cause for many to once again re-examine the group’s catalog and the legacy of these early releases was widely cited.

Matador reissued ‘Entertainment!’ and ‘Solid Gold’ and released the Grammy® nominated box set ‘77-81’ to critical acclaim in 2021. Since then, vocalist Jon King and drummer Hugo Burnham have taken the show on the road again with David Pajo on guitar. Sara Lee joined on bass and has since fully retired. They will be touring in North America in the Spring of 2025.

Track list:

1.Call Me Up
2. I Love a Man in Uniform
3. Muscle for Brains
4. It Is Not Enough
5. Life! It's a Shame
6. I Will Be a Good Boy
7. The History of the World
8. We Live as We Dream, Alone
9. Of the Instant

'Living in the Material World' by George Harrison gets spruced up for 50th anniversary

Living in the Material World, George Harrison’s second solo album of original music following The Beatles’ 1970 dissolution, recently marked its 50th anniversary.

Five weeks after its May 1973 release, both the LP and its single “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)” held the top spots simultaneously on the U.S. albums and singles charts.

The album’s success further solidified a winning streak that began with All Things Must Pass, the triple LP topped the US charts in early 1971. Later that same year, George organized two benefit rock concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York, aiming to raise both awareness and funds for the starving refugees of Bangladesh. The Concert for Bangladesh live album, another triple LP, was another major hit, ultimately earning a Grammy for 'Album of the Year.'

Overseen by Dhani and Olivia Harrison, Living in the Material World has now been completely remixed from the original tapes for various 50th anniversary releases set for November 15 via Dark Horse Records/BMG. The album was remixed by Grammy-winning engineer Paul Hicks (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, John Lennon).

See full track listing below and pre-order HERE.

An acoustic version of “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) (Take 18)” is available now. Listen to “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) (Take 18)”

Of the release, Olivia Harrison shares in a press release:

“I hope you revisit Living in the Material World or discover it for the first time, and as you listen, share George’s wish for himself and mankind."

Dhani Harrison adds:

"Finally, we are overjoyed to present to you the 50th anniversary package of George Harrison's 'Living in the Material World'. For those of you who are just discovering this album; This record was released in service and with deep love for all our Brothers and Sisters around the world who populate this dualistic system we live in called Earth. Peace be upon all sentient beings.”

Following the Concert for Bangladesh George created The Material World Foundation in 1973 to sponsor diverse forms of artistic expression and to encourage the exploration of alternative life views and philosophies as well as supporting established charitable organizations with consideration to those with special needs.

George donated all publishing royalties from Living In The Material World, in perpetuity to the Foundation. For more information go to www.materialworldfoundation.com
