'Spirit Power: The Best Of Johnny Marr' arrives in November alongside new book

Johnny Marr has announced Spirit Power: The Best Of Johnny Marr for release on November 3 via BMG. The album is a personally curated collection of tracks from the last ten years of the singer/guitarist's solo career plus two brand new songs produced by Johnny Marr with his co-producer James Doviak, titled “Somewhere” and “The Answer.”

The artist wrote "Somewhere" while on tour with The Killers, and Blondie, in 2022. Speaking about the track, Marr said: “I’ve played a lot of arenas over the years, and in terms of songwriting, there’s nowhere to hide. For a song to work, it has to be a banger. I know it’s almost uncool to think in those terms, but I grew up in a house where my parents listened to Motown, where you couldn’t get a song released if it wasn’t full of hooks.”

Spirit Power encompasses songs from across four UK top ten solo albums (2013’s The Messenger, 2014’s Playland, 2018’s Call The Comet, 2022 double album Fever Dreams Pts 1-4), non-album single releases “Armatopia,” “The Priest” (with Maxine Peake), two new songs, plus a cover version of Depeche Mode’s “I Feel You,” released for Record Store Day 2015.

The Deluxe CD edition of Spirit Power will feature five previously unheard demos and rarities, “Hi Hello” (Demo), “Somewhere” (Demo), “The Answer” (Crazy Face Version), “The Messenger” (Demo), and “Speak Out Reach Out” (Crazy Face Version).

The upcoming publication of Marr’s Guitars - a new photography book - is set for release this fall. Following his 2016 autobiography "Set The Boy Free,” Johnny describes Marr’s Guitars as “a guitar book for people who wouldn’t usually own a guitar book.” Featuring contributions from Noel Gallagher, Bernard Butler and Ed O’Brien, the book looks into the relationship between Johnny and the guitars that have informed his sound from his time in The Smiths until now.

With personal reflections and insights written by Johnny Marr, foreword written by Hans Zimmer and photographs shot by Pat Graham, each guitar is identified with a crucial moment, a specific song, and each embodies a key aspect of Marr’s lifelong passion for songwriting.

Spirit Power: The Best Of Johnny Marr will be released on November 3rd 2023 on heavyweight 2LP, CD and a limited Deluxe 2CD featuring additional material. Independent record shops have a limited gold 2LP while HMV will carry a limited Cobalt blue 2LP. Preorder here. An exclusive limited double picture disc plus merchandise bundles will be available from the official Johnny Marr store here.

R.E.M.’s 'Up' gets expanded reissue for its 25th anniversary in November

Craft Recordings marks the 25th anniversary of R.E.M.’s 11th studio album Up with a series of expanded and remastered reissues, all of which are available for pre-order now and set for release on November 10.

Created in partnership with the band, the Deluxe 2-CD/1 Blu-Ray edition includes the band’s previously unreleased set from their guest appearance on the hit TV series “Party of Five.” Captured in 1999, the performance includes an 11-song setlist—including “Man on the Moon,” “Losing My Religion,” and “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine)”—plus a spoken-word introduction.

The accompanying Blu-ray features HD music videos from the 1998 album (“Daysleeper,” “Lotus” and “At My Most Beautiful”), a six-song performance from the era (titled Uptake) recorded in a London studio, the album’s original EPK, plus hi-resolution and 5.1 surround sound audio.

Housed in a 32-page hardcover book, the collection also includes new liner notes and new interviews with the band members.

The expanded reissue, which features the album plus the “Party of Five” performance in its entirety, is also available in 2-CD, digital and hi-res configurations, while the 14-track, 2-LP album will be reissued on 180-gram vinyl. A limited-edition pressing on Green Marble vinyl is also available exclusively at R.E.M.’s official store along with special Up merchandise.

All reissue formats feature newly remastered audio by Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering.
Available to stream now is the remastered version of “Daysleeper,” as well as the band’s never-before-released performance of the song from the “Party of Five” taping.

R.E.M.’s appearance on the teen drama (which launched the careers of Scott Wolf, Matthew Fox and Neve Campbell, among others) remains a fond memory. “The intersection of visual and musical art is always interesting, so it was cool to be a part of TV,” recalls bassist Mike Mills.

Martin Scorsese's lauded 1978 concert film “The Last Waltz” about The Band to get special Fathom Event screening

Martin Scorsese's 1978 concert film “The Last Waltz” returns to theaters nationwide this fall, as Fathom Events presents a pair of special screenings on Sunday, November 5 at 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm local time.

While the event was planned for theaters prior to Robbie Robertson’s recent passing, it’s a perfect way to honor him. Each screening will include an exclusive introduction from Robertson, as he narrates a quick look into the genesis and impact of The Last Waltz.

With his perspective as a member of The Band and a constant Scorsese collaborator, Robertson unveils the untold stories and emotions that made this a legendary farewell concert.

Originally filmed at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco on Thanksgiving Day, 1976, “The Last Waltz” captures the final performance of folk rockers The Band, as they take the stage to perform joined by famous friends and fellow legends.

Though they initially rose to prominence as the backing band for Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan, “The Last Waltz” brings The Band to the forefront as Scorsese expertly uses intimate footage of members Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, and Rick Danko recounting their incredible story in their own words between renditions of “Don’t Do It,” “Up On Cripple Creek,” “The Weight,” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” and more.

In addition to The Band, “The Last Waltz” has appearances and performances by music superstars Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Neil Diamond, Emmylou Harris, Muddy Waters, The Staples, Ringo Starr, Ron Wood, Dr. John, Paul Butterfield and Ronnie Hawkins.

While Scorsese has helmed several acclaimed music films throughout his career, “The Last Waltz” is widely considered to be not only his best, but also one of the greatest concert films ever made, due to its innovative style and cultural significance as a perfect time capsule preserving one of music’s most important eras.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at Fathom Events or at participating theater box offices. For a complete list of theater locations, visit the Fathom Events website (theater locations are subject to change).

Additionally, The Last Waltz gets the 45th anniversary treatment with a 3LP audiophile pressing, available this October through Rhino, in-store only, at your local record store.

Martin Scorsese and Robbie Robertson's final collaboration, Apple Original Films’ Killers of the Flower Moon, will also premiere globally in-theaters on October 20.

SoCal alt-rock band Cold War Kids announce self-titled album and '24 tour

On November 3, the Cold War Kids - best known for the rock radio and digital hits "Mine is Yours," "First," "Love is Mystical" and "So Tied Up" (with Bishop Briggs) -
will release their 10th studio album, Cold War Kids, via AWAL.

New song “Another Name” was produced by Ethan Gruska (Phoebe Bridgers). The day he and the band’s frontman Nathan Willett were scheduled to work together for the first time, Willett had his final session with his longtime therapist.

“I started telling Ethan about it, which could have been really awkward with someone I’d never met. It’s not easy to walk into a room and just write a song with a stranger,” he says. “But instead, it was totally natural. The song came out almost fully formed, and it was probably the single best experience I’ve ever had working with a producer.”

Cold War Kids previously shared their single “Run Away With Me” which debuted at #33 on the Alt-Rock charts and “Double Life.”

Over the summer, the band supported Tears For Fears on tour. CWK's headline North American jaunt starts in January. Tickets are on-sale Friday, Sept 15th at 10AM local time and all dates are listed below.

Cold War Kids recently went into the Austin, TX studios of Do512 for a session where they performed some fan favorites like "First” and “Double Life.”

If Nathan Willett followed his usual impulses, Cold War Kids’ 10th album might just have been a five-song EP, or an album with entirely different songs than the 12 ultimately chosen here. Instead, Willett took a rare pandemic-era breather to really contemplate what a Cold War Kids album could, and should, sound like in 2023, and how to infuse the material with meaningful discourse about his life specifically and the state of the world more broadly.

“If I’ve got five songs done that I’ve worked on in a certain way, I tend to want to put them out as an EP and go do some shows around it,” Willett says of his mindset during the early stages of Cold War Kids. “Continually as my brain would go to that place, I’d go, no, just wait, and really put together a full-length record. I needed to approach things very differently and work with some new people in a way that was a little uncomfortable. This album is where I’ve most felt like I was the executive producer of everything.

"The band started out with four guys who have very specific tastes and styles, and now it’s mostly me making the records in a way I love and have always envisioned,” Willett says. “The sound of Cold War Kids has always been there, and I wanted this record to be the ideal, best version of all those things we’ve always been.”

Themes of creative life conflicting with domestic realities reflect Willett’s increasingly introspective state of mind. Committed to pushing himself just as hard to create the album’s sound, Willett turned to a handful of new producers and collaborators.

Ultimately, Cold War Kids is the culmination of Willett and Maust’s two-decade creative partnership, and it embodies the realization that said partnership is still truly worth celebrating. “For so many years, we were white-knuckling it and feeling like we were imposters,” Willett admits. “I realized, I can’t think that way. If I’m not sure I can listen back to something and know that it’s great, then I shouldn’t be putting it out.

“This group of friends met and were drawn to each other at a Christian college, and we started the band in a strange environment where we realized, what are we all doing here?,” Willet says. “We came from a place of growing up, listening to music, and going to shows, and there’s a type of sweetness where we were sheltered from the music industry or wanting to be successful at any cost. Maust and I still have that connection, and it’s still an important part of what Cold War Kids are today.”

Cold War Kids is Nathan Willett (vocals, piano, guitar), Matt Maust (bass guitar), David Quon (guitar, backing vocals), Matthew Schwartz (keyboards, backing vocals, guitar, percussion), and Joe Plummer (drums, percussion).

British band Keane to tour U.S. in '24 for 20th anniversary reissue of debut album 'Hopes and Fears'

Hopes and Dreams, the debut album by British pop/rock band Keane will be released as a special remastered version on May 10, 2024, exactly 20 years after its initial release.

In celebration of this special anniversary edition, the band will play a handful of UK dates including London’s 02 Arena on May 10, officially kicking off their world tour on April 1 in Mexico City.

Keane reaches the U.S. in September 2024, including shows at LA’s Greek Theatre, Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium and New York City’s Radio City Music Hall.

For full routing and to sign up for ticket presale code, go to keanemusic.com. Presale is next Wednesday; general on sale is next Friday.

Hopes and Fears set records upon release on both sides of the Atlantic. As one of the best-selling albums in UK chart history, selling over 2.5 million in the UK in its first year, it went platinum here in the U.S. (shipping almost 2 million units). The album locked in the #1 position on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart, propelled by their classic songs “Somewhere Only We Know” and “Everybody’s Changing” which claimed the #2 and #6 spots on Billboard Adult Alternative chart respectively. Eventually, it sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

As a testament to the band’s long-standing legacy, “Somewhere Only We Know” has enjoyed a recent revival on Tik Tok, going viral in Indonesia which lit the spark for a global renaissance of the track which currently clocks up two million Spotify streams a day. In the past 12 months, it has become Island Records’ biggest selling single, having been streamed over a billion times so far.

Next year’s tour will celebrate Keane’s acclaimed body of work from their debut Hopes and Fears to their 2019 studio album Cause and Effect.

Lead singer Tom Chaplin says: “I remember standing by that amazing old mixing desk at Heliocentric Studios where we made Hopes and Fears, listening to an early mix of ‘Somewhere Only We Know.’ I had this feeling that we’d come up with something that had an extra bit of magic. Making music is so often a process full of doubt…but on this occasion there was something undeniable about what we’d created. Clearly, a lot of people felt the same when the album came out!”

Founding band member and songwriter Tim Rice-Oxley said: “When I think about these songs, I still picture us playing them in little rooms in pubs around the UK. I remember how exciting it was watching the crowds start to grow. Those songs opened the door to another dimension for us; everything that has happened in our lives since then was born out of that moment. It’s an incredible privilege for us that people are still listening after all this time."

Upcoming Howard Jones retrospective set encompasses 40 years of hits, remixes, live tracks and more

UK label Cherry Red Records will release CELEBRATE IT TOGETHER: THE VERY BEST OF HOWARD JONES 1983-2023. Due out on October 6, the compilation comes in three different formats: 4CD, 2LP or 2CD.

This is the first anthology that looks at his entire catalogue, from the original version of “New Song,” all the way to a 2023 Elephant Talk remix of it. It includes songs from his Warner-era catalogue, as well as work from his independent Dtox label and features hit singles, remixes, key album tracks, live versions and alternative recordings.

For CELEBRATE IT TOGETHER, Jones personally chose to group the songs into four categories: “Popular Hits,” “Electro,” “Chill,” and “Curiosities.” He wanted to elevate this selection of songs beyond the typical chronological approach and create themes that mix and match different pieces from different eras, with the overall listening experience top of mind.

The deluxe 4CD box set version contains 64 remastered tracks and includes 4 previously unreleased tracks and a further 6 tracks previously unreleased on CD. Please see below for the respective CD track listings. To pre-order CELEBRATE IT TOGETHER, please click here.

Howard Jones just wrapped a summer tour of North America as main support for Culture Club on The Letting It Go Show shed trek. The Black Crowes revisit 'The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion' with box set in December

The Black Crowes announce the box set of their chart-topping sophomore album, The Southern Harmony And Musical Companion, via American Recordings/UMe on Dec. 1.

The album, which entered the US Billboard album chart at No. 1 upon release in 1992, was named after a post-Civil War southern hymnal and features some of the band's biggest hits, including "Remedy," “Sting Me,” and "Thorn in My Pride” which were #1 on the Billboard Main Stream Rock Airplay chart for a combined total of 21 weeks.

Rich and Chris Robinson, alongside producer George Drakoulias, revisited the archives and created a special super deluxe edition featuring unreleased studio recordings, rare B-sides, a live performance from Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston, TX, on February 6, 1993, and a newly remastered album from the original 1/4″ production master. There are 14 unreleased recordings, including a new mix of the Memphis soul classic song "99 Pounds" originally by Ann Peebles and written by Don Bryant, and a previously unreleased studio recording of "Miserable."

At the end of the Southern Harmony and Musical Companion recording sessions in early 1992, the band performed live on the famed Southern Tracks Studio floor in Atlanta, GA, on January 4, 1992. The session was captured by a film crew. These never-before-released until now, live, studio recordings, feature five songs, including their cover of Ry Cooder's "Boomer's Story." Also included in the super deluxe edition, Southern Harmony Live, featuring all the tracks off the album, performed live in Houston, TX, on February 6, 1993. This much-bootlegged show has now been mixed from the 24-track tapes and is available alongside the original album, which has been remastered from the 1/4″ production master.

The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion is available for pre-order now on 4LP, 3CD, 2 CD, and 1LP formats. An exclusive, limited-edition “Remedy” Lyric T-shirt or Trucker Hat will also be available as Fan Packs bundled with the 1LP in the Black Crowes official store HERE.

A super deluxe digital audio will also be available to preorder on October 6. Fans who preorder the digital super deluxe will immediately receive a new mix of the Memphis soul classic song "99 Pounds." Pre-order The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion here.

The Black Crowes Chris Robinson said, “We’ve always thought that the music on Southern Harmony and Musical Companion was made of a certain magic that was in the air for us in 1992. This special box set represents all the ingredients of the spell we were under.”

“I always felt that Southern Harmony was us coming into our own as a band and creating our sound.” The Black Crowes Rich Robinson elaborated. “We made the record in 8 days. Every song was one or two takes. No more than that. It was a snapshot of a band possessing all of its powers, and it still resonates with me to this day.”

The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion will be available in the following formats:The Super Deluxe 4LP and 3CD Box Sets include the remastered The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion from the original 1/4” production master (LP1/CD1.) (LP2/ CD2) “More Harmony: Unreleased, Outtakes and B-Sides” features a collection of nine songs from the Southern Harmony recording sessions at Southern Tracks in Atlanta, GA between December 1991 and January 1992, including two unreleased recordings “99 Pounds” and “Miserable.” On the last day of recording, the band played live, in studio on January 4, 1992, with covers of Bob Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women #12 and 35,” and Ry Cooder’s “Boomer’s Story.” (LP3-4/ CD3) “Southern Harmony Live: February 6, 1993,” in Houston, TX., originally recorded on a 24-track tape. The performance features eight of the Southern Harmony album tracks and a seven-minute “Jam.”

Both the LP and CD box set include a reproduction of the original 132-page promotional hymn book featuring insights on the record and a set of lithographs of classic images from the Southern Harmony photo sessions. All LPs in the box are 180g vinyl.

A limited-edition, e-comm exclusive of the 4LP Super Deluxe version will be signed by Chris and Rich Robinson.

The digital audio from the Super Deluxe will also be available to preorder on October 6. Fans who preorder the digital deluxe will immediately receive a new mix of the Memphis soul classic song "99 Pounds."

The Deluxe 2CD set features the 2023 remaster of the original The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, plus a bonus CD, “The Best of the Box,” containing nine rare and unreleased sections from the super deluxe box set.

1LP 2023 limited edition remaster of Southern Harmony and Musical Companion on 140g black vinyl, with the audio sourced from the original 1/4” production master tape.

An exclusive, limited-edition “Remedy” Lyric T-shirt or Trucker Hat will also be available as Fan Packs bundled with the 1LP in the Black Crowes official store HERE.

Farewell to the first 50, Let's get the next 50 started!”

To continue the celebration, DEVO has also partnered with the disruptive clothing brand Brain Dead who will host and launch a special DEVO event as well as merchandise capsule. The Rolling Stones announce first studio album in nearly 20 years, 'Hackney Diamonds,' out next month

On Wednesday, The Rolling Stones released new single “Angry” (Listen Here.) It arrives alongside the announcement of their studio album, Hackney Diamonds, to be released October 20.

The exciting news was shared by Mick, Keith and Ronnie at a special media launch event at the historic Hackney Empire, East London's epicentre of pioneering art for almost 125 years. The launch was hosted by Jimmy Fallon and streamed worldwide via YouTube.

The 12-track album, for which full track list information will be revealed soon, was recorded in various locations around the world, including Henson Recording Studios, Los Angeles; Metropolis Studios, London; Sanctuary Studios, Nassau, Bahamas; Electric Lady Studios, New York; and The Hit Factory/Germano Studios, also in New York.

The album is their first studio set of new material since 2005's A Bigger Bang. Since then, The Stones have continued to do global sellout tours and released 2016's GRAMMY® Award winning Blue & Lonesome, which featured their versions of blues tracks that helped shape their sound, and topped album charts around the world. Last year, European audiences totalling nearly a quarter of a million saw their 60th anniversary tour.

Hackney Diamonds marks The Stones' (Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood) first collaboration with Andrew Watt, who was named Producer of the Year at the 2021 GRAMMY® Awards and has worked with Iggy Pop, Ozzy Osbourne and Elton John.

“Angry” is accompanied by a music video directed by Francois Rousselet, whose credits include work with Nike, Diesel, Pharrell Williams, and on The Stones'
“Ride 'Em On Down,” from Blue & Lonesome. The new promo clip stars Emmy-nominated actress Sydney Sweeney (The White Lotus, Euphoria, The Handmaid's Tale).

The bespoke artwork for Hackney Diamonds is by digital animator Paulina Almira.

HACKNEY DIAMONDS RELEASED ON GEFFEN RECORDS OCT 20

Out now: 'The Tides' EP by Griffin House

For Griffin House, the music for his new EP “The Tides” started to appear in a quaint Scandinavian fishing village just north of Seattle. Over the past 15 years, House has
been living the life of a one-man band troubadour. Not just solo on stage, but solo through the airports, train stations and highways, with guitar and baggage in hand, crisscrossing the country alone and showing and playing nearly 100 dates a year in the U.S.

Although Seattle has been a regular stop on the map since the early 2000s, it wasn’t until In 2012 when House first arrived in Ballard for a show at the Tractor Tavern, a bar and concert venue nestled in the heart of town, among the brick paved streets, just steps away from majestic sail boats bobbing up and down in the Shilshole Bay. House describes immediately falling under the town’s enchanting maritime spell and soaking up the magic in the Northwest air each time he returned to Seattle.

Last year on an autumn day while walking the streets and people watching, House recalls being visited by a familiar melody as he started to sing some lyrics to the tune of an ancient sea shanty. In the opening track “Once Upon a Time in Ballard Town” House invites the listener on a journey through a day in the life of his adventures roaming Ballard.

“Once Upon a Time in Ballard Town” became a catalyst for more songs that would become a five song EP recorded in March of 2023 with multi-Grammy award winning producer Jacquire King. Four autobiographical songs follow as House continues to reconcile the two conflicting identities of life as a touring musician and sober traditional family man.

“Lifeline” a song written about finding an unexpected friend in the world who brought support in a time of hardship. is the current radio single and focus track for the EP, serviced to college and non-comm radio.

Nirvana's 'In Utero' to get deluxe reissue in October for its 30th anniversary

Nirvana's third and final studio album In Utero was originally released on September 21, 1993. Recorded by Steve Albini, it
went on to mark Nirvana’s first #1 debut on the Billboard 200 and has since been certified 6x platinum in the United States.

Geffen/UMe commemorates the 30th anniversary of In Utero with several multi-format reissues, arriving on October 27. Configurations include a limited-edition 8LP Super Deluxe box set, 5CD Super Deluxe box set, 1 LP + 10” edition, 2CD Deluxe edition, and a Digital Super Deluxe edition.

Pre-order/Pre-save Nirvana – In Utero: 30th Anniversary HERE.

The three Super Deluxe Edition releases comprise a total of 72 tracks with 53 previously unreleased tracks. Among the unreleased material, two full In Utero-era concerts, namely Live In Los Angeles (1993) and the band’s final Seattle performance, Live In Seattle (1994), are included in addition to six bonus live tracks from Rome, Springfield, and New York.

Seattle producer and engineer Jack Endino—who helmed the band’s 1988 debut Bleach—reconstructed the live tracks from stereo soundboard tapes for this year’s reissue. Additionally, In Utero’s original twelve songs, along with five bonus tracks and B-sides, have been newly remastered from the original analog master stereo tapes by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Services—who assisted Albini as the only other engineer at the original sessions.

The physical Super Deluxe Edition box sets also boast a removable front-cover acrylic panel with the album’s angel; a 48-page hardcover book with unreleased photos; a 20-page newly designed fanzine; a Los Angeles tour poster lithograph by hot rod artist Coop; replicas of the 1993 record store promo angel mobile, three gig fliers, two ticket stubs for Los Angeles and Seattle, an All-Access tour laminate, and four cloth sticky tour backstage passes: Press, Photo, After Show, and Local Crew.

Available exclusively at online stores at uDiscovermusic.com and SoundofVinyl.com and limited to 3000 units worldwide, fans who buy either Super Deluxe Edition will receive a Nirvana acrylic stand to display their angel-on-acrylic panel included in both boxset configurations.
