Neil Young with Crazy Horse album slated for November

The ever-prolific Mr. Young has another new album on the way, read on...

Neil Young with Crazy Horse announce World Record, recorded at Shangri-La Studio and produced by Rick Rubin and Neil Young. The first track from the album “Love Earth,” is available now. Click HERE to stream and HERE to view/share the video directed by dhlovelife (AKA Young's wife, actress Daryl Hannah).

Available for pre-order today and coming to most DSPs on November 18 via Reprise Records, WORLD RECORD is available on vinyl, CD, and cassette formats via The Greedy Hand Store at Neil Young Archives (NYA) and music retailers everywhere. Click HERE to pre-order.

As Young himself said in a message on the Times-Contrarian during the making of World Record: “Real magic lasts and we think we have it.”

Recorded live to capture the Horse’s long-running spirit, the album was mixed to analog tape at Shangri-La.

To optimize audio quality, the vinyl format of World Record will be released as a three-sided double album with an etching on side four. There will also be a limited-edition version of the album pressed on clear vinyl available via Young’s webstore, The Greedy Hand Store, and indie retailers. World Record will also be issued on cassette and as a double CD set (mirroring the track sequence of the double LP). All Greedy Hand Store purchases of World Record (LP, CD or cassette) come with free hi-res digital audio downloads from the Xstream Store © at NYA.

Additionally, World Record will be released in multiple digital formats, including XStream Hi-Res Audio and Atmos/Spatial. The album’s hi-res streaming format is fully supported at Amazon, Apple, and Qobuz. It will also be available digitally at Neil Young Archives and all major DSPs on November 18.

Only at NYA can you find Young’s music in the highest possible digital audio resolution alongside a seemingly infinite store of archival files. It’s also the home of Young’s virtual daily newspaper, The Times Contrarian, and The Hearse Theater, where you can see rare footage and stream live shows.

Out now: 'Lindeville' by Ashley McBryde

Ashley McBryde Presents: Lindeville is available now via Warner Music Nashville. Produced by John Osborne, it includes performances from McBryde, Brothers Osborne, Brandy Clark and others.

Written during a weeklong exercise in a rural cabin outside Nashville, McBryde set out with a group of her favorite collaborators to work up a project they had no intention of ever recording or releasing.

Opening track “Brenda Put Your Bra On” provides listeners with the first cast of characters.

“I’d like to think that when you first get to town, you think to yourself, ‘What a cute little neighborhood,’” outlines McBryde. “And then the next thing you see is dishes flying across Main Street. And you’re like, ‘Okay! Good morning, Lindeville!’And that’s when we find out that Tina’s friends are witnessing her catching Marvin cheating.

“So ‘Bonfire at Tina’s’ is about all of those women in that town going, ‘Look, we all hate each other, and we can go back to talking shit about each other, but right now, one of us is hurting, and that gives us permission to drink too much, smoke and set shit on fire,” McBryde imparts.

“I secretly hope that multiple people get together to burn the things that have been holding them back (in a super safe way),” admits McBryde. “But I hope that it becomes an anthem and an outlet, not just for women, but for anybody who’s like, ‘You know what? I’m so tired of struggling with my weight.’ And they go burn their scale. Yes. Do that!”

Out now: 'Uncovered' EP by Suzi Quatro

Veteran rocker Suzi Quatro returns with a new EP, Uncovered, out today via Sun Records (see track listing below). A vinyl release will follow on November 4.

Quatro says, "I am proud to release this EP (Uncovered) of some of my favorite covers. After 58 years in this business, the choice was huge. This is an eclectic mix comprising my influences in the formative years of my first band. It was a pleasure to have Steve Cropper on guitar on two tracks, which he co-wrote, ‘Midnight Hour,’ and ‘Dock of the Bay.’ What a player. Enjoy a trip through my musical history. Rock Classics done by a classic rocker.”

Out now: 'Fossora' by Bjork

Björk releases her tenth studio album, and first in five years, fossora, via One Little Independent Records; stream / listen to the album here. fossora, a word created by Björk, is the feminised version of the Latin word for “digger,” and a reflection on roots, grounding, love, and family in the context of an underground mushroom world. The album is produced by Björk and recorded by Bergur Thorisson.

The new album finds Björk nesting at home in Iceland through the pandemic long enough to set down roots - both literally in her hometown Reykjavík and symbolically. While Björk’s last album, 2017’s critically acclaimed Utopia, was a city in the clouds, fossora is the sonic opposite: an earth-focused, natural eco-system of bass clarinets and punchy sub-bass.

“Each album always starts with a feeling that I try to shape into sound. This time around, the feeling was landing on the Earth and digging my feet into the ground (after my last album Utopia which was all island in the clouds, element, air and no bass). It was also woven into how I experienced the "now." This time around, 7 billion of us did it together, nesting in our homes quarantining, being long enough in one place that we shot down roots. My new album "fossora" is about that. It is a word I made up. It is the feminine of fossore (digger, delver, ditcher). So, in short it means "she who digs" (into the ground). Sonically it is about bass, heavy bottom end. We have 6 bass clarinets and punchy sub,” says Bjork in a statement.

The album features contributions from Björk’s son Sindri, and daughter Ísadóra; clarinet sextet Murmuri; The Hamrahlíð Choir; Emilie Nicolas; Kasimyn of Gabber Modus Operandi; sideproject; El Guincho; many of Björk’s Icelandic acoustic musical collaborators; and bass clarinets, strings, trombones and more.

The album also deals with legacy, with two tracks paying tribute to her late mother, Hildur Rúna Hauksdóttir, who died in 2018.

Track listing:

1. atopos
2. ovule
3. mycelia
4. sorrowful soil
5. ancestress

Ron Sexsmith travels across 'The Vivian Line' next February

Ron Sexsmith will release his 17th
album The Vivian Line on Feb. 17. First single “What I Had In Mind” is available at all DSPs. LISTEN HEREPre-order or pre-save it here.

Explains Sexsmith: “The Vivian Line is a rural route right near where we live in Stratford (Ontario). Whenever we have to get out of the city we jump on The Vivian Line and it dumps us out onto the highway. I wondered about the name when we first moved there and thought it was intriguing... it sort of represents escaping from our old life in Toronto to this new phase we're in. And it's also like a portal to my old life when I have to get back there.

I recorded it (The Vivian Line) with Brad Jones in Nashville. (Brad played bass on 3 of my earlier records "Other Songs", "Whereabouts" and "Blue Boy") and it's a very lush sounding almost baroque pop record. (a distant cousin of "Whereabouts). The songs were mostly inspired by this stage in life that I find myself in and trying to figure it all out.”

Sexsmith's debut album emerged in 1991. He has collaborated with Daniel Lanois, Mitchell Froom, Ane Brun, Tchad Blake, and Bob Rock. His songwriting appears on albums from Rod Stewart, Michael Bublé, k.d. lang, Emmylou Harris and Feist. Film-maker Doug Arrowsmith made an acclaimed documentary about Ron in 2010 called ‘Love Shines’. In 2017 Ron published his first book, a fairy tale entitled ‘Deer Life’.

Producer Brad Jones' credits include Josh Rouse, Matthew Sweet, Imperial Drag, Jill Sobule, and Marshall Crenshaw.

Bruce Springsteen album news

Bruce Springsteen's new studio album, a collection of 15 soul music covers titled Only The Strong Survive, will be released by Columbia Records on November 11.

It encompassed tracks from catalogues of Motown, Gamble and Huff, Stax and more. This 21st studio album from Bruce Springsteen will also feature guest vocals by Sam Moore, as well as contributions from The E Street Horns, string arrangements by Rob Mathes, and backing vocals by Soozie Tyrell, Lisa Lowell, Michelle Moore, Curtis King Jr., Dennis Collins and Fonzi Thornton.

Bruce Springsteen commented: “I wanted to make an album where I just sang. And what better music to work with than the great American songbook of the Sixties and Seventies? I’ve taken my inspiration from Levi Stubbs, David Ruffin, Jimmy Ruffin, the Iceman Jerry Butler, Diana Ross, Dobie Gray, and Scott Walker, among many others. I’ve tried to do justice to them all—and to the fabulous writers of this glorious music. My goal is for the modern audience to experience its beauty and joy, just as I have since I first heard it. I hope you love listening to it as much as I loved making it.”

Beach Boys’ archival series continues in November with 'Sail On Sailor - 1972' box set

The Beach Boys albums, 1972’s Carl and the Passions – So Tough and 1973’s Holland, will take center focus in Sail On Sailor - 1972, a new expansive multi-disc and digital box set, releasing November 18 via Capitol Records/UMe.

The latest chapter in the Beach Boys’ archival series was produced by Mark Linett and Alan Boyd, the team behind 2013’s GRAMMY® Award-winning SMiLE Sessions and last year’s acclaimed Feel Flows – The Sunflower and Surf’s Up Sessions 1969-1971. The comprehensive 6CD Super Deluxe Edition features newly remastered versions of Carl and the Passions – So Tough and Holland, plus Holland’s Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairytale) EP (complete with its original instructions to “please listen in the dark”), and boasts an unreleased live concert recorded at NYC’s famed Carnegie Hall on Thanksgiving, 1972, the first-ever release of a complete Beach Boys concert from this era with the original setlist.

Similar to Feel Flows, which topped many year-end lists in 2022 and was selected by MOJO as their prestigious “Reissue Of The Year,” Sail On Sailor - 1972 includes unreleased outtakes, live recordings, radio promos, alternate versions, alternate mixes, isolated backing tracks and a cappella versions, culled from the historic album sessions. In all, it contains 105 tracks, 80 of which are previously unreleased.

Sail On Sailor – 1972 is being previewed with the previously unreleased performance of Carl and The Passions’ album opener, “You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone,” recorded live during their performance at Carnegie Hall on November 23, 1972. The complete Carnegie Hall set, which has remained unreleased for 50 years, was recorded on then state-of-the-art 16-track tape, rare for the time and a great advantage given the number of instruments and vocalists in the band.

Housed in a 12.5” x 10” hardback book-style package, Sail On Sailor - 1972 is rounded out with a detailed 48-page booklet with extensive liner notes by noted radio veteran and Beach Boys aficionado Howie Edelson, featuring new and archival interviews with The Beach Boys, rare photos of the band, images of tape boxes and reels and other recording artifacts, producers notes from Linett and Boyd, and promotional memorabilia from the day, providing an in-depth look at the recording of these albums.

In addition to the 6CD Super Deluxe Edition, Sail on Sailor - 1972 will be available as a 5LP+7-inch EP vinyl box set, which includes the entire Carnegie Hall concerts, a variety of bonus material (also found on the Super Deluxe), and for the first time ever, a reproduction of Brian Wilson’s EP, Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairytale) on 7-inch, the format it was originally released on as a companion to Holland. The vinyl box will be available on its own or as a limited edition set with lithographs. A variety of abbreviated versions will also be available, including a 2LP+7-inch EP set, available with or without a limited edition reproduction of the original Holland promotional book telling the story of the making of the album; a 2CD deluxe edition; and digitally.

'A Nelson Family Christmas' feat. Matthew, Gunnar, Rick and Ozzie Nelson, arrives in October

Gunnar and Matthew Nelson present A Nelson Family Christmas via UMe on
October 14. This all-new holiday collection of Christmas standards, none of which are currently available digitally, is a true family affair.

The multi-platinum-selling twin brothers included holiday tunes recorded by their father, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Ricky Nelson, and their grandfather, big band star-turned-TV icon Ozzie Nelson. The Nelsons, in fact, are the only family to ever have #1 hit songs across three generations. A Nelson Family Christmas is now available for pre-order.

“This album has been our labor of love from the very beginning,” Gunnar describes. “Growing up in the Southern California music scene with our father’s Stone Canyon Band, we were inspired by family friends like Linda Ronstadt, Crosby Stills and Nash, Poco, Jackson Browne, and the Eagles. We wanted to produce this record with the same reverence for organic music that these musical heroes of ours had. Real instruments. Real singing. Timeless and classic while remaining passionate and uplifting. We couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve done on this album.”

Matthew and Gunnar Nelson had long thought about doing a Christmas album. When the brothers decided to make one, the duo focused on maintaining the timeless quality of these Christmas classics but also having them sound genuine to themselves as musicians.

“The Christmas miracle here is that this is the first time all three generations of Number One Nelson men, through the power of music, are able to travel through time and sing together,” added Gunnar. “What a gift! It’s always been a dream of ours to be able to sing with Grandpa and Pop. Now we don’t have to wait to get into Heaven to do it.”

They leaned toward the country rock sound that they grew up on more than the harder rock that garnered them their big hits like “After The Rain” and “(Can't Live Without Your) Love and Affection.”

Since “This Christmas” is about love and Christmas miracles, it feels appropriate that the Nelsons donated proceeds from the song to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to support the hospital’s efforts to defeat defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. “This Christmas,” along with the other Nelson tracks on A Nelson Family Christmas, is drawn from two holiday albums, This Christmas and This Christmas Too, that Gunnar and Matthew released on their own Stone Canyon Records in 2015 and 2016, respectively, although the albums presently are not available digitally.

This recording of “This Christmas” also adds to the family nature of A Nelson Family Christmas because it features their childhood friends, Carnie and Wendy Wilson, the daughters of Beach Boy Brian Wilson. Matthew has described the way the four sing together as “absolute magic.” The Nelson family is further represented on this album by two Ricky Nelson Christmas tunes, “Jingle Bells” and “The Christmas Song,” which he performed on The Adventures of Ozzie And Harriet TV show, although the tracks were only released commercially after his death. There is a third version of “Jingle Bells” in this collection; this one was recorded by Ozzie and Harriet with the Ozzie Nelson orchestra back in the 1930s.

Besides touring as Nelson, the brothers also salute their father and his music with the show, Ricky Nelson Remembered. This December, as they have done the past few years, Gunnar and Matthew will also go out on tour with Christmas With The Nelsons. More than just a concert of the duo playing holiday tunes, this multi-media concert spotlights three different eras of Christmases in the Nelson family: the ‘50s with Ricky as a boy, the ‘70s when Gunnar and Matthew were kids, and the present day with the latest generation of Nelson children.

As Nelson, Matthew and Gunnar have had their long and successful career in music. They became international stars with their first album, After The Rain, which went double platinum, spawning four Top 30 singles, and remaining on the Billboard 200 Album Chart for over 60 weeks. The brothers have continued to make well-received records in the years since and play around 100 shows a year.

In July 2022, UMe released the career-spanning compilation, Greatest Hits (And Near Misses) which showcases the duo’s impressive decades of music-making.

“We knew exactly what we wanted,” Matthew said about their sound. “Two brothers with a vision and a sound that no one else has.” Gunnar elaborated further, stating “We’ve made a conscious decision to come from the heart. It’s amazing what happens when you stop fighting the universe and start doing what you were born to do.”

Paul Kelly compiles his drinking songs for latest themed collection

Australian musician Paul Kelly stocked the third installation of his themed compilations with alcohol-involved tunes. Set for release on September 30, Drinking follows Time and Rivers and Rain, the first two titles in this on-going retrospective series from Gawd Aggie/Cooking Vinyl.

The 18 tracks on Drinking stretch from “Little Decisions” off Paul Kelly & The Messengers’ debut, Gossip (1986), to the brand new (and previously unreleased) “One More Tune.”

Accompanying Messengers-era songs along with his solo material, Kelly also includes hand-picked pieces from his collaborative efforts with Australian multi-instrumentalist Charlie Owen, Melbourne-based bluegrass outfit Uncle Bill, and the Merri Soul Sessions guest vocalist Vika Bull (of Vika & Linda Bull fame) who sing on "Sweet Guy.”

Drinking presents a trio of live performances: “King of Fools” from his The A to Z Recordings (2010), “Every F*cking City” from Songs of the South (1997), and a never-before-released recording of his classic “To Her Door” from his appearance at Sydney’s 2022 Vivid Festival.

“For me, drinking is one of the great pleasures of life,” Kelly explains. “A glass of wine or two with dinner, the first beer after hard physical work or sport, a dark ale and a whisky on a cold night….the beaded bubbles winking at the brim of the glass on the surf club balcony looking out over the sea… little buzz on.”

Paul Kelly holds the prestigious title of an Officer of the Order of Australia for his distinguished service to the arts as well as being inducted into the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame. One of Drinking’s songs, “To Her Door,” ranked among the top 30 Most Australian songs of all time. Words & Music (1998), featuring “Nothing On My Mind” and “Tease Me,” earned him ARIA’s Male Artist of the Year honors. 2004’s Ways & Means (“Crying Shame”) and 2018’s Nature (“Seagulls of Seattle”) both won ARIA’s Best Adult Contemporary Album awards. Ten other albums represented on this collection are part of Kelly’s approximately 80 Australian music award nominations that he has received during his career.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ 'Live at the Fillmore' slated for November

Live at the Fillmore (1997) - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ first live album in 13 years - is due November 25 on Warner Records.

The album will be available in various formats, see below for details and click HERE to pre-order. To celebrate, the track “Listen To Her Heart” premiered alongside a video directed by Peter Sluszka; watch/share HERE.

Before starting the 20-show run at the Fillmore, Tom Petty outlined his plans in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle:

“We’re musicians and we want to play. We’ve made so many records in the past five years, I think the best thing for us to do is just go out and play and it will lead us to our next place, wherever that may be.”

The album features more covers than originals, paying tribute to the artists and songs that shaped Petty’s love of music as he was growing up. Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” The Rolling Stones’ “Time is On My Side,” The Kinks, Everly Brothers, Bill Withers, The Byrds, Chuck Berry and Booker T. & the M.G.’s are among the acts covered by Petty and the band.

The collection also features special performances with The Byrds’ Roger McGuinn and John Lee Hooker.

“Playing the Fillmore in 1997 for a month was one of my favorite experiences as a musician in my whole life. The band was on fire and we changed the set list every night. The room and the crowd was spiritual... AND... we got to play with some amazing guests. I will always remember those nights with joy and inspiration,” said Mike Campbell.

At the final show, Petty noted as he took the stage: “We all feel this might be the highpoint of our time together as a group…It’s going to be hard to get us off this stage tonight.”

The live collection will be offered in a 3 LP version and a comprehensive box set featuring 58 songs and 14 spoken word tracks that highlight Petty’s connection with his band and his fans from the stage. The shows were taped during the last six nights of the band’s residency. The compilation was handled by producers Ryan Ulyate and Mike Campbell and executive producers Benmont Tench, Adria Petty, Annakim Petty and Dana Petty.

Tom Petty Radio (channel 31) on SiriusXM premiered the album announcement and new song with exclusive interviews with Heartbreakers Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Steve Ferrone, and Scott Thurston.

Live at the Fillmore (1997) will be released in various formats: 2 CD, 3 LP, 4 CD, 6 LP, 6 LP Uber Deluxe: Available exclusively on the Tom Petty webstore

Out now: The new album from Blaqk Audio

This past spring, I reviewed the duo at Cruel World Fest #1 (find it elsewhere on this blog) and was very impressed. See the new music info below...

BLAQK AUDIO, featuring Davey Havok and Jade Puget of AFI, have released their new album TROP D'AMOUR. Listen here. It follows 2020's Beneath the Black Palms.

Various LP/CD/shirt bundles are available through the web store. Get the vinyl here.

"Dancing in the shadows between the edges of extremes, Trop d'Amour puts beat to ego, lust, pride, fame, power, control, submission, loneliness, betrayal, elation and self-adulation," says Havok. "With too much love, Blaqk Audio give you our sixth record."

A video for "Cowboy Nights" is on YouTube.

The band will play an album release show on Saturday at LA's Fonda Theatre.
