All-star tribute to Pink Floyd’s 'Wish You Were Here' album

Pink Floyd’s 1975 album, Wish You Were Here is a musically and emotionally complex tribute to the band’s former leader, vocalist Syd Barrett, whose deteriorating mental health had caused the band to oust him in 1968. The album has become a touchstone for a generation of artists who sought to achieve the synthesis of multi-part suites, ballads and melodic rockers that Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason realized on this album.

Now, an all-star lineup of rock and metal musicians have gathered to recreate it. Still Wish You Were Here - due May 28 via Cleopatra Records - includes performances from keyboardist Rick Wakeman (YES), Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice, Rock Hall of Fame nominee Todd Rundgren, ex-Queensrÿche vocalist Geoff Tate, guitarist Joe Satriani, Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie, bassist Bootsy Collins, The Damned’s Rat Scabies, PiL’s Jah Wobble and more.

Still Wish You Were Here will be available on both CD in a six-panel deluxe digipak and a gatefold vinyl in a variety of colors. Pre-order the album: https://orcd.co/still_wish_you_were

David Bowie film news

On June 29, Shout! Factory will reissue 1978 black comedy "Just a Gigolo" on Blu-ray for the first time. The film will also be available on DVD, on digital and on demand the same day.

The drama starring David Bowie. Kim Novak and Marlene Dietrich (in her final role) has been newly remastered from original sources, presenting the film for the first time ever in high definition. The release comes complete with a 32-page booklet and with bonus features including The Making of Gigolo with producer/writer Joshua Sinclair and assistant to the director Rory MacLean, as well as audio commentary with Rory MacLean. Fans can pre-order their copies from shoutfactory.com now.

Paul von Przygodski (David Bowie), a young Prussian gentleman, arrives in the trenches in time to be caught in the final explosion of the Great War. After recuperating in a military hospital, where he is mistaken for a French hero, he returns to Berlin. His family home has been turned into a boarding house, his father (Rudolf Schündler) is paralyzed, and his mother (Maria Schell) is working in the Turkish baths.

Attempting to find a new purpose, his childhood friend, Cilly (Sydne Rome), abandons him for fame and fortune; his former commanding officer, Captain Kraft (David Hemmings), tries to persuade him to join his right-wing movement and a widow, Helga von Kaiserling (Kim Novak), briefly seduces him with the finer things in life.

In a society where the individual comes first and anyone can be bought, he is recruited by Baroness von Semering (Marlene Dietrich) as one in her regiment of gigolos.

The cynical and decadent world of entertaining rich widows leads an increasingly disillusioned Paul to a poignant, chilling end.

Among the artists performing jazz and cabaret songs on the soundtrack are The Manhattan Transfer, the Village People (!) and Dietrich on the title track. Bowie himself contributed a piece of music to the film, "Revolutionary Song," which was played by a band called The Rebels.

Bonus Features:

32-Page Booklet
The Making of Gigolo with Producer/Writer Joshua Sinclair and Assistant to the Director Rory MacLean
Audio Commentary with Rory MacLean

Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real detail 'A Few Stars Apart'

Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real’s next album, A Few Stars Apart, will be released June 11 on Fantasy Records and is now available for pre-order. In advance of the release, the album’s first single, “Perennial Bloom (Back To You),” is out today—listen/share HERE.

Helmed by Grammy Award winning producer Dave Cobb, the album was inspired by the stillness Nelson found while riding out the beginning of the pandemic with his family in Texas and was recorded with the full band live on eight-track tape over three weeks at Nashville’s historic RCA Studio A. The eleven songs reveal what it means to come home again, to be still, and to find community—and yourself.

“I’m from what one might say is the ultimate road family—I’ve been on the road my entire life,” shares Nelson. “I’ve never been anywhere longer than three months, and suddenly here we are, the four of us together. And thank god we were together. I can’t remember the last time we had that much time together as a family. We had a lot of really important bonding that happened during that time. And I have to say, as terrible as the pandemic has been in so many ways, for my inner peace, I was able to take a lot of good from this time. I was able to pause and reflect.”

He continues, “It took me a really long time to come back to the home in my heart. In a physical sense, that’s Texas and Hawaii. But in a spiritual sense as well—I think I finally decided not to run from who I am and who I am destined to be.First and foremost, that’s a songwriter. That’s what this record means to me. There’s a story being told through the whole record. A story about connection and coming home.”

Based in Texas and Hawaii, Promise of the Real is: Lukas Nelson (lead vocals, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, piano), Anthony LoGerfo (drums, percussion, tambourine), Corey McCormick (bass guitar, upright bass, Mellotron, vocals), Tato Melgar (percussion) and Logan Metz (piano, Wurlitzer, B3 organ, lap steel, banjo, Mellotron, vocals).

Since their debut over a decade ago, the acclaimed band have toured relentlessly playing countless sold-out one-night shows and festivals around the world and occasionally serving as Neil Young’s road band.

Nelson also co-produced the music for 2018’s lauded A Star Is Born film in addition to appearing in the film with the band and went on to win a BAFTA Award for Best Original Music and a GRAMMY Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media for his work.

Original ASIA band box set due in June

This is exciting news for ASIA fans like myself. I interviewed Geoff Downes soon after the reunited original band started touring America and saw them perform a few times in the intervening years - including a very memorable gig at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Read below for the latest news...

ASIA, the multi-platinum selling English rock supergroup formed in London in 1981, are celebrating their 40th anniversary by releasing a 5CD boxset The Reunion Albums: 2007 - 2012 via BMG on June 11.

Pre-order it here:
asiaband.lnk.to/reunionalbumsPR

This 5CD deluxe clamshell box set features the 2CD live recording Fantasia, Live In Tokyo together with the three reunion studio albums Phoenix, Omega and XXX.

Back in 1982, ASIA's eponymous debut album was among the biggest selling albums of the year worldwide. The single Heat Of The Moment reached the top 40 in over a dozen markets, peaking in the U.S. at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.

The four original members of ASIA – John Wetton (King Crimson, lead vocal/bass), Steve Howe (YES, guitars), Carl Palmer (Emerson, Lake & Palmer, drums) and Geoff Downes (The Buggles, YES, keyboards), reunited to celebrate their 25th anniversary in 2006 and 2007 with a world tour.

A live album from the tour Fantasia, Live In Tokyo was released in 2007 as they returned to the studio together for the first time in a quarter of a century. The reunion would yield three studio albums Phoenix (2008), Omega (2010) and XXX (2012) as they celebrated their 30th anniversary.

Of these later albums Carl Palmer said, “The chemistry and energy that comes out when the four of us are working together, is reflected in the new material.” For his part, John Wetton marveled at how far the band had come. “Each one of us is comfortable as a human being, and the sound reflects the collective maturity of these four people who are not only eager to explore but also relaxed enough to luxuriate in the strength of the material.”

This boxset features the original ASIA line-up, reformed in 2006, and brings together, for the first time, all of ASIA’s essential music into a single collection.

Fantasia, Live In Tokyo, the 2CD live show from their 2007 World Tour, features many of the tracks from their first two albums Asia (1982) and Alpha (1983) and includes Heat Of The Moment and Don’t Cry together with heritage tracks from each of the band member’s musical history. The band also performed live, for the first time, an acoustic version of Ride Easy, a B-side from the debut single Heat Of The Moment.

The boxset collection is completed by the three reunion studio albums Phoenix, Omega and XXX, which allowed the band to fully
explore their rock and progressive roots.

These albums are presented together in a collector’s edition boxset designed by Roger Dean, who produced all of the original albums’ artwork. The boxset cover image was previously unused and the Fantasia sleeve design has been updated by Roger.

About ASIA

Moving beyond their progressive roots, ASIA embraced the commercial FM rock sound that dominated US airwaves and were popular on a then-new MTV. The single Heat Of The Moment was a worldwide hit and their eponymous 1982 debut album spent nine weeks atop the Billboard chart.

A second platinum selling album, Alpha, was released in 1983. The four original members reconvened in 2006 for a world tour, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its success and the album Phoenix followed.

While the members were still heavily involved in other projects, they came together again to record Omega in 2010 and XXX in 2012. Both albums were supported by more world tours.

Steve Howe stepped back from ASIA to concentrate on his work with YES and he was replaced by Sam Coulson for 2014’s Gravitas. Following this tour came the news of John Wetton’s treatment for cancer. He died in 2017, just before Asia started an arena tour with JOURNEY, a tour which became a tribute to John’s life and legacy. John had requested that Billy Sherwood [YES] replace him on bass and vocals. ASIA supported YES’s 2019 US Royal Affair Tour with Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal (Guns N’ Roses) on guitar and vocal duties. Steve Howe also returned as special guest.

In 2021 ASIA signed a deal with BMG to re-release their reunion albums Phoenix, Omega, Fantasia: Live In Tokyo and XXX, along with Gravitas (with Sam Coulson), to celebrate the band’s 40th anniversary in 2022. They also plan to release a box-set ASIA In Asia, of the first simulcast from 1983, with Greg Lake temporarily replacing John Wetton.

Mike Peters and Billy Duffy revive Coloursound project

COLOURSØUND II, the new album from the alt-rock songwriting project created by Billy Duffy of The Cult and Mike Peters of The Alarm, is due
July 16.

Closing a gap of twenty years between their first record and now, the Coloursøund partnership of Billy Duffy and Mike Peters was originally forged in 1997 when neither were aligned to the groups they are equally synonymous with. By the time they had written and released their first album COLOURSØUND back in 1999, both Billy and Mike had returned to fly their banners with The Cult and The Alarm respectively.

"You could say that our songwriting partnership was born outside of wedlock”, says Peters. “When we first started working together in the late 1990’s we had no allegiance to either The Cult or The Alarm. We were drawn to write instinctively together, Billy drove the music from a guitar perspective and I would add lyrics and vocals affected by being in the presence of someone who had followed a similar life journey and affected as I had, by the turbulence of the rock and roll existence."

Then in 2019, Billy Duffy sent Mike Peters a guitar riff via email that immediately triggered a choral response. Within weeks, the pair had located to a beach cottage in a remote part of the North Wales coastline to write again. By the raging winter sea shore, that first moment of creativity became Paradise [Free People] the opening song of COLOURSØUND II.

‘"Free people is who we are now,” says Billy. “We have a lot more understanding of how life works and the original Coloursøund phase taught us both so much about ourselves, that we were able to return, survive and thrive in the bands that we made our reputations with. Ever since we first started working together, we have both retained and hung on to elements of that newly found artistic freedom we experienced through the Coloursøund project. By hiking together with Love Hope Strength, playing together in Dead Men Walking or producing records with other musicians. 2019 felt like the right time to do something together as Coloursound. What neither of us saw coming was the pandemic and how this music would help us both through the challenges of Lockdown.”

COLOURSØUND II was recorded between the lockdowns at the Chapel Studio in Lincolnshire with bass player George Williams and Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros drummer Smiley making up the rhythm section.

“I had this vision to create a really simple, direct rock record” continues Billy. “A record that allowed both Mike and I to do what we do best and be heard for who we are. Almost like we were playing live without overdubs. I had a belief that a record recorded and delivered in this manner, would cut through and sound as contemporary as anything out there. We have gathered so much experience between us, that I felt we could be totally honest in our musicianship and deliver a record that captured the essence of our relationship.”

The new album was produced by George Williams, who also played bass.

"As soon as I opened Billy’s email and heard that first classic riff of his, I knew the calling of Coloursound had to be answered." says Mike Peters. "No one plays guitar like Billy, he’s the master of his art and more, and to create music and sing with him is a privilege. This is not The Cult, nor is it The Alarm. This is Coloursøund - alive because it exists. Here and now because we have made it so, and this is the time to set it free.”

COLOURSOUND II will be available digitally as well as on CD and a Studio Edition Limited Colour Vinyl. Pre-order at http://bit.ly/Coloursound_Store

Additionally, the debut album for Coloursound will be released for streaming and download on April 30.

Miranda Lambert teams up with Jack Ingram, Jon Randall for 'The Marfa Tapes'

Jack Ingram, Miranda Lambert, and Jon Randall just released a new song from their forthcoming album The Marfa Tapes (due out May 7) titled “Anchor.” Of the track, Ingram stated, “You know that feeling when someone pulls you in so deep that you never want to come back. You just want them to hold you and never let go. There’s a beautiful freedom in that and somehow it feels like you are flying. That’s an anchor and you're lucky if you found one.”

Listen to “Anchor” and pre-order The Marfa Tapes HERE.
Watch the official music video HERE.

Last month, the trio shared the album opener “In His Arms,” which they will perform for the first time ever Sunday during the “56th ACM Awards” live on CBS (8:00 p.m. EST / 7:00 p.m. CST).

Heard in its original stripped-down state, the trio also revisited “Tin Man” for the first time since it’s whirlwind run up the charts and slew of award nominations, as well as a win for ACM Song of the Year.

Am I Right Or Amarillo ” is out now as well along with the accompanying video. Of the track, Randall stated, “‘Am I Right or Amarillo’ was a Jack Ingram line. I think we were talking about the most time we’ve ever spent in Amarillo was at the truck stop. We just started riffing on the title and a cheating song showed itself. We all miss country cheating songs so we just went with it. It is really more of a bluegrass kind of thing.”

Out on May 7 through Vanner Records/RCA Nashville, The Marfa Tapes is a collection of songs written and recorded together in the tiny, middle-of-nowhere town of Marfa, TX. Barely a dot on the map, Marfa is an eccentric outpost in the midst of a vast expanse of nothingness, the perfect place to lose - or find - yourself.

For Lambert, Randall, and Ingram, it’s both. Over the past several years, the desolate location has become a songwriting haven for the trio, yielding both massive hits and profound personal growth. When they returned for five days this past November though, they came not to write, but to record, capturing a new album inspired by the stark beauty of west Texas and the deep, lasting bonds the three have forged there. It was recorded raw and loose with just a pair of microphones and an acoustic guitar.

The trio recorded much of the album outdoors, inviting the ambient sounds of the desert to seep into their live, bare bones performances. While a couple of the tracks may already be familiar to listeners - “Tin Man” as well as fan favorite “Tequila Does” - the vast majority of these songs have never been heard outside of Marfa.

Track List:

01) In His Arms
02) I Don’t Like It
03) The Wind’s Just Gonna Blow
04) Am I Right Or Amarillo
05) Waxahachie
06) Homegrown Tomatoes
07) Breaking A Heart
08) Ghost
09) Geraldene
10) We’ll Always Have The Blues
11) Tin Man
12) Two-Step Down To Texas
13) Anchor
14) Tequila Does
15) Amazing Grace (West Texas)

Tim McGraw's 'Here on Earth' gets expanded edition

Tim McGraw expands upon his critically acclaimed #1 album HERE ON EARTH with two new digital deluxe versions – HERE ON EARTH Ultimate Edition & HERE ON EARTH Ultimate Video Edition, out now via Big Machine Records. Giving a glimpse into the project, McGraw recently released powerful advance track “God Moves The Pen,” listen here.

The Ultimate Edition features six additional tracks, including “God Moves The Pen,” “Undivided” – McGraw’s latest collaboration with Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard – and two additional bonus movie tracks, “Keep Your Eyes on Me” with Faith Hill from the 2017 feature film The Shack and “Gravity” from the 2018 Academy Award ® winning documentary Free Solo. McGraw wrote the former alongside Hill, Lori McKenna and Shane McAnally and the latter with McKenna.

The Ultimate Video Edition includes all tracks on the Ultimate Edition with the addition of videos for six songs: “Here on Earth,” “I Called Mama,” “Gravy,” “Undivided,” “Thought About You,” and “Neon Church.” Full track lists for both albums are below.

McGraw’s original HERE ON EARTH album – his 16th studio album – debuted at #1 on the Billboard Country album chart upon its August 2020 release, marking his 4th straight decade with a #1 album on the Billboard Country Album chart. The album was his 19th worldwide #1 and his 17th U.S. #1, tying him for second most #1 albums in the U.S., just behind George Strait.

The record offered a collection of songs brought together to create vignettes of shared human emotions such as love, relationships, introspection and fun. HERE ON EARTH Ultimate Edition & Ultimate Video Edition add to the musical tapestry of life presented in the original album, further allowing listeners to connect to each other through the universal language of music.

Additionally, a special edition 12” vinyl of “Undivided” will be available on June 12 for Record Store Day. McGraw and Hubbard’s first live performance of the upbeat and heartfelt collaboration came during the 2021 Celebrating America television special following President Joe Biden’s inauguration in January. Most recently, they released a Director’s Cut version of the song’s music video.

An acoustic version of McGraw’s hit single “I Called Mama” – originally released in May 2020 – will be on the B-side of the vinyl. The song has continued to serve as a reminder of the importance of home and human connection, especially in the toughest of times.

While Lionel Richie and his American Idol colleagues continue their mission to discover music’s next superstar, today marks the 25th anniversary of Louder Than Words, the Top 30 Billboard album that ushered in a new chapter for one of the most successful Pop and R&B artists of all time.

Island Def Jam Music Group/UMe will celebrate this era in Lionel Richie’s illustrious career with digital deluxe editions of multiple albums throughout 2021, including Just For You (May 7) and Time (June 25). Each of the bonus tracks on the digital deluxe editions of Louder Than Words, Just For You and Time will make their streaming debut.

Kicking off these releases will be the 25th anniversary expanded digital deluxe edition of Louder Than Words, Richie’s fourth solo studio album and first for Mercury/Island Records, originally available on April 16, 1996.

Available here, Louder Than Words, which at the time was Richie’s first full album in 10 years, features “Don’t Wanna Lose You,” co-written by Lionel Richie, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Also featured are “I Wanna Take You Down,” “Paradise,” “Climbing,” “Ordinary Girl,” and Lionel Richie’s work with Babyface and David Foster. The bonus tracks include rare Spanish and Italian language versions of “Still In Love,” the radio version of “Don’t Wanna Lose You,” and non-album cuts “What Do They Know” and “Now You’re Gone.” Louder Than Words enhances Richie’s smooth R&B style with traces of funk and hip-hop for an emotional journey through heartbreak, anticipation and romance that speaks volumes.

The expanded digital deluxe edition of Just For You, available on May 7, features three international bonus tracks and several multi-genre remixes of the title song, plus an exciting live version of Richie’s global favorite, “All Night Long (All Night),” recorded at London’s Wembley Stadium. Originally released on Island Records in 2004, Just For You showcases what has long been a Richie trademark: the ability to cross musical genres and defy boundaries to craft pop perfection. “I Still Believe” brings a touch of gospel to the power of a loving relationship. Elsewhere, from the wistful “Long Long Way To Go,” ever-hopeful “Just To Be With You Again,” orchestral “Time of Our Life,” featuring Lenny Kravitz and blues-rocker “Outrageous,” Lionel Richie effortlessly shifts from intimacy to anthemic.

That same month, on May 21, UMe will make available digitally for the first time in North America Lionel Richie’s original 2008 release, Symphonica in Rosso, an exciting live recording featuring Richie, backed by his band and a powerful orchestra, singing dramatic orchestral renditions and re-energized arrangements of his biggest hits at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam, Netherlands. In addition to head-turning versions of “Endless Love,” “Dancing on the Ceiling,” “Don’t Stop the Music,” Love Will Conquer All,” “Easy,” and many more, the album includes “Face in the Crowd,” a live duet with Dutch singer Trijntje Oosterhuis, who would go on to perform a studio version with Lionel Richie on his 2009 album Just Go.

Richie has composed some of music’s most popular songs, and on Time, originally a Mercury Records/Island Def Jam Music Group release in 1998, his insights are as relevant as ever. The lead track, for example, responded to gun violence, prejudice and lives taken from loved ones all too soon with a plea to a adopt more tolerant mindset and, perhaps, presciently, consider “Zoomin’” – an update of the Commodores’ classic “Zoom” – to a better place. From R&B gems (“I Hear Your Voice,” “Everytime”) to gentle ballads (“Forever,” “The Closest Thing to Heaven”), and the ticking clocks leading into the title track (“Time”), the album captures the movement of life through joyful experiences, unexpected heartache, struggle and love. Time also features Lionel Richie performing “Lady,” which he originally wrote and produced for Kenny Rogers, who made it a No.1 hit in 1980. Bonus tracks premiering on digital streaming services on June 25 include the international bonus track, “There’s A Place;” various remixes of the title song from Paul Waterman and Andrew Frampton, Todd Terry and more; a rare, sought-after “Hustler’s Convention DMC Mix” of Lionel Richie’s iconic “All Night Long (All Night); and live tracks recorded in Milan in ’98.

With more Island releases to be announced, UMe continues to showcase Lionel Richie’s solo career with new HD remastered videos from across his impressive catalog premiering on his official YouTube channel. The HD version of the hit single “Hello,” which topped three different Billboard charts during its initial 1984 release from the Diamond-certified Can’t Slow Down album, has reached 14 million views in five months. Additional HD remastered videos include “Penny Lover,” the final single from Can’t Slow Down, available now; and Lionel Richie’s live performance of “Easy” at the legendary New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, the city’s first after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, May 7, 2006, which will premiere May 21, in time for the fourth-season finale of ABC’s American Idol, scheduled for May 23.

Dramarama reissues debut and latest albums on vinyl

For longtime Dramarama fans like myself, the news below is definitely a super cool surprise. L
ast year, I had the pleasure of interviewing band members John Easdale and Mark Englert as well as their producer about the making of their long-awaited studio album (find it elsewhere on this blog). Here's the official press release...

New Jersey alternative rock quintet Dramarama has released two of their most iconic albums, Color TV (2020) and Cinéma Vérité (1985) on limited edition vinyl via Pasadena Records. The simultaneous vinyl release of these two albums poetically bookends the career-to-date of one of our most intriguing and influential American rock bands. Purchase albums HERE.

Dramarama’s latest release, Color TV received major critical acclaim. Legendary music critic Robert Christgau added Color TV to his most coveted Dean's List and called the album, ‘the finest of an impressively consistent career.’ American Songwriter said the album ‘features some of lead singer / songwriter John Easdale’s fiercest and most moving compositions,’ and Rock Cellar declared Color TV ‘among the strongest rock releases this year.’

Flash back to the musically groundbreaking mid-80s: “Anything, Anything (I’ll Give You)” comes screaming out of tastemaker radio stations coast to coast. L.A.’s KROQ launches this shot heard ‘round the world. This undeniable, anthem-of-angst, punk rock smash sounds as unnerving and hungry as ever. “Anything, Anything (I’ll Give You)” is only one highlight of Dramarama’s fierce debut album Cinéma Vérité, perhaps one of the finest blends of British invasion panache and glam influences, to punk energy and back again. Now after a 35-year hiatus, Cinéma Vérité is back on vinyl.

Rooted in distorted grit, punk energy, and American songbook eloquence, Dramarama has always been both classic and cutting-edge. The current lineup - John Easdale (vocals/songwriting), Mark Englert (guitar), Peter Wood (guitar), Mike Davis (bass) and Tony Snow (drums) – has been together longer than the one that made Cinéma Vérité. They not only preserve but strengthen the spirit that established the group as a music-history making force in 1982.

Danny Elfman remakes Oingo Boingo tune on long awaited solo album

After releasing a series of singles over the past few months, Danny Elfman confirms that his first solo album in 37 years, titled Big Mess, is due June 11 through Anti-/Epitaph.

Multimedia artist Sarah Sitkin created the video for Elfman’s new single release “True.” Watch it HERE.

“The video is an exploration of fractured identity, muffled through the lens of memory,” Sitkin says. “Danny is a central figure within the video, yet only in his reproduced likeness via prosthetics, masks and 3D printed body parts. I wanted to make a video that was gritty, unpolished and uncomfortable.”

The double album finds the Grammy and Emmy Award-winning composer drawing on a dystopian palette of distorted electric guitars, industrial synthesizers and orchestra. He is joined on the album by drummer Josh Freese (Devo, Weezer, Vandals), bassist Stu Brooks (Lady Gaga), and guitarists Robin Finck (NIN, Guns N’ Roses) and Nili Brosh (Tony MacAlpine, Paul Gilbert).

Big Mess was almost entirely created spontaneously during quarantine in 2020. It began as an experiment Elfman had been considering which combined aggressive rock band and orchestral strings in a way that had not been heavily explored.

“Once I began writing,” he explained, “It was like opening a Pandora’s box and I found I couldn’t stop. None of it was planned. I had no idea how many songs I would write but from the start it quickly became a 2-sided project with heavily contrasting and even conflicting tones."

The songs on Big Mess combine both harmonically complex arrangements and simple high energy driving music with biting, acerbic wit as they reckon with the chaos and confusion of the modern world.

“2020 was an intense year, to say the very least,” Elfman says. Big Mess is an often explicitly political record— “Choose Your Side”, “Serious Ground” and “Sorry” all anchor themselves in the political intensity of our times. Even a reworked Oingo Boingo song, “Insects,” transforms itself into a meditation on the greed and sickness of the American ruling class—but Big Mess is also a deeply personal work, with others songs revealing more than in the past.

“I knew from the start that this wasn’t going to be a neat, easy-to-categorize record,” says Elfman. “It was always destined to be this crazy cacophony, because that’s who I am. The 'Big Mess' is me.”

The album artwork was also created by Sarah Sitkin from a series of 3D body scans and designed and art directed by Berit Gwendolyn Gilma.

Elfman is also releasing a limited edition Big Mess box set this fall. This collector’s edition contains the full album along with unreleased remixes and alternate versions of songs. Additionally, the package will include collectable artwork, a unique USB with video content and bonus material, and an exclusive artbook featuring Sarah Sitkin’s original creations and never before seen photos and ephemera. More details and information to come.

Twinkids' album 'Nobody Likes Me' due next week

LA-based queer pop duo Twinkids'
debut album Nobody Likes Me arrives April 23 through Om Records.

Comprising Tokyo-born singer/songwriter Jin Fukui and Floridian pianist/producer Matthew Young, they explore anxieties, vulnerabilities, and acceptance as it relates to their identity set to ‘80s-infused pop.

Of latest single “I Know,” the pair says, “We imagined the song as coming to terms with the fact your relationship just isn’t working anymore. You’ve both grown up, and things are different. The common tragedy of being deeply incompatible with a partner you already love. In the verses it’s the things you say to your lover, and maybe to yourself too: I can change, I’ll do better, I’ll be better. And then the chorus of realizing the other shoe has already dropped, knowing it’s already over, soberly, if you really ask yourself.”

After meeting at Oberlin College and Conservatory in northeast Ohio, Matthew and Jin discovered a mutual reverence for electronic music and began writing, producing, and performing together. They went on to study at the renowned Banff Centre in Canada under Brendan Canning of Broken Social Scene.

In 2017, Twinkids released their debut EP Boys Love with the EP title paying homage to the gay romance manga genre of the same name. Boys Love features the Spotify hit "Overdressed," which has amassed over 6 million plays.

The following year, the duo garnered attention on Hype Machine with "Jigoku Tengoku" along with a national tour supporting Matt and Kim. In 2019, Twinkids released their sophomore EP Lizard House. They returned in 2020 with "Feeling Small," a single on Kitsuné Musique, and “The Bends,” a collaboration with indietronica artist The Chain Gang of 1974.

Years & Years releases “Starstruck” single, video

Years & Years just unveiled the video for new single “Starstruck.”
It’s the first new Years & Years music since 2018’s second album ‘Palo Santo,’ and follows frontman Olly Alexander’s leading role in the critically acclaimed HBO Max show, ‘It’s A Sin,’ written by multi-BAFTA Award-winning writer Russell T Davies (Queer As Folk, A Very English Scandal, Years and Years, Doctor Who).

Watch the “Starstruck” video HERE.

Alexander’s song is about human connection and the cosmos. He says it “came together one night at a studio in the countryside outside of London. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d seen so many stars, you get used to them not being there when you live in the city. Since we’ve all had to stop, all I’ve wanted to do is go out and dance. So I’ve been putting all that pent up energy into the music. ‘Starstruck’ is about the rush you get when you’re with somebody you’re really into, it’s about holding onto a good feeling and not letting it go. Like most of us I’ve spent the past year at home, and I wanted to create something super positive and fun for people (and myself) to bop along too. Whatever we’re doing or wherever we are in life, I think we all deserve three minutes of interstellar ecstasy.”

Listen to “Starstruck” HERE.

As Years & Years, Olly Alexander has released two successful albums to date. The singer/actor has earned 5 Brit Award nominations, sold-out numerous global tours, and played homecoming shows at London’s O2 and Wembley Arena.

Along the way, Olly has been open about mental health, and issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community. This has been marked by a number of standout moments, ranging from Alexander's defiant speech at Glastonbury in 2016 in the wake of tragic shooting in Orlando, Florida to his BBC Documentary ‘Olly Alexander: Growing Up Gay,’ plus the creative world around 'Palo Santo' (an album that arrived with a short film starring Judi Dench and Ben Whishaw).

Ever since multi-platinum-selling debut album ‘Communion’ in 2015, Years & Years’ influence has been growing. Olly is currently at work on more music to follow “Starstruck.”

Next month sees the new album by M.O.M. - former Faith No More keyboardist Roddy Bottum and Joey Holman

Roddy Bottum of Faith No More and Imperial Teen fame teamed up with
Joey Holman for Man on Man (M.O.M.), whose self-titled debut album is due out on May 7 via Polyvinyl Record Co.

A video for their song “It’s So Fun (To Be Gay)features guests JD Samson (Le Tigre), Patty Schemel (Hole), John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig & the Angry Inch) and others.

Click HERE to watch/share “It’s So Fun (To Be Gay)” video.

“We wanted "It's So Fun (To Be Gay)" to feel organic and warm with a strong, universal message,” says the New York City-based duo.

“For the video we aimed to focus on our community. Getting through the hardships of the past year we leaned heavily on what we mean to each other in terms of support and understanding. We were in the middle of launching our Chosen Family project and had just finished linking people up for our pen pal program and sourcing art for our quarterly zine. We thought the best way to exhibit the joy in the song would be to have a video full of our chosen family - friends, peers, and heros. So, we asked friends to share their love and lives and these queer testimonials are what make up the bulk of the video. Our togetherness and bond is key to moving forward in these times especially and we aimed to capture that bond and essence, particularly with Gay Pride 2021 on the horizon. It felt fitting to donate the launch-day's sales to Born Perfect, which is a non-profit whose mission is to end conversion therapy.“

The newly launched Chosen Family LGBTQIA+ project is an extension of the band that aims to take people offline and connect in meaningful ways including a pen-pal program (which already has 500+ subscribers globally) and a quarterly zine.

Bottum and his boyfriend Holman started the project in quarantine as a celebration of gay love. Previous single Baby, You’re My Everything” is a queer hymn of devotion, underscoring the very best parts of being with a lover in quarantine.

Its video is a wander into the baptism of rainbowed fellowship. Filmed on an iPhone while sheltering-in-place in Oxnard, California, the spectacular video embodies a broadened identity of DIY scrappiness while continuing on their mission to break down gatekeeper walls of straight and LGBTQIA+ establishments.

“There was a magnification of emotions in isolation that we focused on and the intensity of our union took on an almost spiritual nature. Our musical references were gospel and choir combined with dirty, drone-y rock. It's a love song about adoration and soul and relationship in the modern age,” explains Man on Man.

The pair drew national attention when their debut single “Daddy” was removed from YouTube for violating “our sex and nudity policy” as reported by Rolling Stone. The video contained neither and was later reinstated with an apology for the mistake.

Rod Stewart news

Warner Records goes back to the start of Rod Stewart's successful '70s run with a new boxed set that features Stewart's first four Warner albums on vinyl, plus a bonus LP of rare and unreleased studio outtakes from those albums: Atlantic Crossing (1975), A Night on the Town (1976), Footloose & Fancy Free (1977), and Blondes Have More Fun (1978).

"It's extraordinary for me to look back on this era of my career," says Stewart. "I think fans will enjoy experiencing these songs on vinyl. I know I did."

After being out of print for decades, the studio albums' return to vinyl comes complete with replica sleeves and newly remastered sound. The albums and the bonus LP are all organized in an iridescent box with Stewart foil-stamped on the cover. ROD STEWART 1975-1978 will be available on June 4 at retail outlets and digitally. The collection is also currently available for pre-order at Rhino.com.

After stints with the Jeff Beck Group and the Faces and several solo albums, Stewart moved to Los Angeles in 1974. The next year saw his label debut, Atlantic Crossing. The album was produced by Tom Dowd, who produced Stewart's next three albums.

That four-album run during the 1970s was one of Stewart's most successful. After Atlantic Crossing was certified gold, A Night On the Town went double-platinum, and Foot Loose & Fancy Free went triple-platinum, as did its follow-up Blondes Have More Fun, which became Stewart's first #1 album. That era introduced many of the singer's best-known tracks: "Sailing," "I Don't Want to Talk About It," "I Was Only Joking," "The First Cut Is the Deepest," "You're in My Heart (The Final Acclaim)," "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" and "Hot Legs."

The bonus LP, titled Encores 1975-1978, is a collection of 10 outtakes selected from the recording sessions for all four albums. The first side highlights five songs from the recent deluxe editions released for Atlantic Crossing and A Night on the Town. Songs include an alternate version of the B-side "Rosie" and a cover of the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody" recorded with Booker T. & The MG's. The flip side features five previously unreleased session outtakes from Foot Loose & Fancy Free and Blondes Have More Fun. There's a cover of the Motown classic, "You Really Got A Hold On Me," and the unreleased tracks "Silver Tongue" and "Don't Hang Up."
