The NAMM Show 2018: Saturday Report: Andy Grammer, Nolan Neal, others

Another fine NAMM Show drew to a close in Orange County, Calif. this past Sunday.

Over the course of four days, the huge music trade show drew more than 100,000 industry professionals and a couple thousand exhibitors from around the world.

Held annually at the Anaheim Convention Center and adjoining hotels, The NAMM Show was definitely improved by a recently completed expansion that added 200,000 square feet of booth space.

From new product demonstrations, displays, education sessions, training and discussions to artist appearances, signings and live performances, there is always plenty to do. It’s nearly impossible to get everything you want out of NAMM (the National Association of Music Merchandisers) in a single day though. Somehow, I still managed to experience an array of live music and activities Saturday during my dozen hours on site.

The morning started with the NAMM U Breakfast Session at the Hilton Hotel's Pacific Ballroom. Stanton Moore (pictured, below), drummer for New Orleans jazz-rock band Galactic, was the featured entertainment.

Joined by a keyboardist, the pair laid down some tasty grooves, including a sumptuous version of Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel.” Several music companies were commemorated to mark their 50th anniversary. Marcus Sheridan (AKA The Sales Lion) followed with a talk about the current makeup of the digital consumer.

While briskly making my way through the main convention center floor, I was stopped in my tracks by Dixie Jade at the Sennheiser microphones booth. The Nashville-based female country duo sported some gorgeous harmonies, especially during “Blame it on Me” and “I Can’t Turn You Off.”

As the lunchtime crowd waited in long food truck lines, Street Light Cadence played the Grand Plaza Stage. The Hawaii-bred, LA-based trio played pleasant alternative/folk/pop tunes on accordion, violin and cello. They closed with a feisty cover of the Charlie Daniels Band’s “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.”

Last year at NAMM, I missed Kenny Charles and the Open Road when a scheduled indoor performance was cancelled (a torrential rainstorm caused problems everywhere), so I was glad to finally see them on Saturday afternoon for the first time.

Charles is a SoCal native who has received radio airplay on Coachella Valley radio station KIX Hot Country 92.1/96.3 FM for the song “Kiss Me if You Dare.” It was part of a mighty impressive 40-minute set outside at the Arena Plaza Stage.

The band kicked off with a rousing “Drunk Wedding Day” from solid 2016 album “Lightning in a Bottle. The Keith Urban-esque “Cussin’ & Fussin’” and heartland rock vibe of “I Get That” were early standouts. Charles provided background on the songs. He said the outlaw country tune “The Drifter” was inspired by repeated viewings of the 2009 Jeff Bridges music-themed drama “Crazy Heart.”

An appealing “Black Rose” brought to mind the best Goo Goo Dolls material, while the early ‘70s Laurel Canyon country rock scene influenced “Every Bullet.” Later, a party song about Saturday Night name checked Billy Ray Cyrus, Brooks & Dunn and Trace Adkins in the lyrics. Charles and company closed with a credible, spirited take on Rick Springfield’s “Jessie’s Girl.”

Back over at the convention center, the Taylor Guitars room hosted Nolan Neal. The bearded rock musician – who has toured or performed with Hinder, Tonic, Saliva and Shinedown – did a compelling 50-minute late afternoon set with several special guests.

Playing acoustic guitar and backed by a percussionist, Neal fared best during the quiet ballad “I’ll Be Fine” and an intense “Lost.” The latter, about past struggles with addiction, saw him really belt the vocal out.

Aaron Gibson, a fellow former contestant on NBC’s “The Voice,” joined for solid covers of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' “Into the Great Wide Open” and R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion.” Dixie Jade contributed sweet harmonies on a tune and Neal finished with his popular song from the TV show: Elton John & Bernie Taupin’s “Tiny Dancer.”

Andy Grammer (pictured, top) headlined the Imagine Party, the big evening show on the Grand Plaza sponsored by the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus. “I play a lot of shows and this one is special,” he said, about a quarter way through the 85-minute set. “You are my people. Music is the love we all share.”

The LA-based pop/soul musician was exuberant throughout the concert. Backed by a four-piece band, Grammer played keyboards as they launched with his first two singles from 2011: the infectious platinum-seller “Keep Your Head Up” and insanely catchy “Fine by Me.”

After noting that “Always,” the first of 10 (!) tracks off engaging 2017 album “The Good Parts” was written for his infant daughter while in the womb, Grammer worked both sides of the stage and even played the song’s trumpet break.

There was some fun beat boxing and audience call and response action during the lively “85”; the older selection “The Pocket” had a 1970s Jackson 5 vibe, complete with keytar. Grammer did a snippet of Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars” and playfully demonstrated a vocoder (with a bit of The Beatles’ “All You Need is Love”).

Meanwhile, the musicians often did synchronized moves. The smooth R&B-meets EDM of 2016 gold single “Fresh Eyes” went down well with fans, as did the final stretch of hits like the frantic “Honey, I’m Good” (where many people danced up a storm), a breezy cover of Maroon 5’s “Sunday Morning” and another hit, the sprightly “Good to Be Alive (Hallelujah).”

The long-awaited return of Tracey Thorn

Tracey Thorn just revealed her new single “Queen,” the first song to be taken from her first solo album of entirely original material in seven years. Titled Record, it will be released on March 2.

Watch the Carol Morley-directed video for “Queen” now, and pre-order the album on CD and smoky red Peak Vinyl in the Merge store, where each format can be bundled with a beautiful full-color Tracey Thorn zine featuring 20 pages of handwritten lyrics and photos from the recording sessions. The record is also available for pre-order through your preferred independent record store and digital music service

Watch & share the music video for Tracey Thorn’s “Queen” now

Describing “Queen,” Tracey says: “It’s a great opener for the album. Driven along by Ewan Pearson’s unashamedly glittering electro-pop production, and drums and bass from Warpaint’s Stella and Jenny, it features me playing electric guitar for the first time in a while, and singing my heart out.”

As ever, the personal has often been political in Tracey Thorn’s work. “Nine feminist bangers,” Tracey jokes when asked to describe Record. If this album is in part about freedom and disenthrallment, new single “Queen” is the opening broadside, all personal fire and desire. Her voice, self-assured and richly textured yet confessional and affecting, spits out the lyrics on Record with a fresh, compelling drive and remains one of the finest female pop voices of the last four decades.

“I think I’ve always written songs which chronicle the milestones of a woman’s life,” she says. “Different ages and stages, different realities not often discussed in pop lyrics. If 2010’s Love and Its Opposite was my mid-life album—full of divorce and hormones—then Record represents that sense of liberation that comes in the aftermath, from embarking on a whole new ‘no fucks given’ phase of life.”

On Record, the synth-driven tracks arrive and leave with a punchy sub-three-minute directness. “I wanted it to be a record you’d listen to in the daytime,” Tracey says. “On your headphones or on the move. Not necessarily in the evening, or in your bedroom.” For all its no-fuss pop brevity, the album rotates around “Sister,” a dubby nine-minute Compass Point-style disco jam where Tracey is joined again by Warpaint’s rhythm section and glorious backing vocals from Corinne Bailey Rae.

Across four decades, Tracey’s songs and writing have offered up a clear-eyed woman’s view of the immediate world around her, from the acerbic teen love songs of her first early-eighties band Marine Girls, through sixteen years as one half of articulate multi-million-selling duo Everything But The Girl, to her recent acclaimed memoirs and journalism.

Josh Rouse tackles 'Love in the Modern Age'

Singer-songwriter Josh Rouse will release his new album Love in the Modern Age on April 13 via Yep Roc Records. Forbes premieres the 1980's inspired single "Businessman" with an exclusive interview.

Read the full interview at Forbes and stream/embed the track here:
https://youtu.be/Kqn-yZ1Gw7U

Similar to his work on his album 1972 where he captured the aesthetics of a specific moment in time, Josh’s new album Love in the Modern Age takes inspiration from the sound and production of early 1980's releases by The Blue Nile, The Style Council and Prefab Sprout.

Also serving as inspiration were Roxy Music’s Avalon, Leonard Cohen's Various Positions and I'm Your Man. Non-ironic touches like sax, handclaps, reverbed guitar, backing vocals and keyboards give the moody but infectious songs a New Romantic flair.

Josh Rouse has solidified his status as one of his generation's most acclaimed songwriters in both the US and Europe, where he's lived on and off since 2004. Spending the better part of a year touring behind his critically acclaimed eleventh album, The Embers of Time, Rouse was ready for a change.

"Coming off such a heavy record, I wanted to try something different," he explains. "I wanted to explore new sounds and write with a fresh backdrop." Trading in his trusty acoustic guitar for a synthesizer, Love in the Modern Age still bears Rouse's distinct fingerprints even as it pushes his limits and forges a bold new chapter more than twenty years into his celebrated career.

Late last year, Rouse released the title track, "Love in the Modern Age" and Official Video as part of his Pledgemusic Campaign. Listen to the track and watch his epic campaign video at https://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/loveinthemodernage. Second single "Businessman" is also available today as an instant grat track.

Editors band news

Earlier this week, Editors unveiled "Magazine," from forthcoming album Violence - the band’s first single in three years.

Violence is the sixth album from Editors, and follows 2015’s acclaimed top 5 UK charter In Dream. It is produced by Leo Abrahams (Wild Beasts, Florence & The Machine, Frightened Rabbit) and Editors with additional production from Benjamin John Power and mixed by Cenzo Townshend, except "Hallelujah (So Low)," mixed by Alan Moulder.

Out today: Phillip Phillips' 'Collateral'

Platinum-selling Interscope Recording artist Phillip Phillips' new album Collateral is out now. It is the follow-up to 2014's Behind the Light. The track “Into The Wild” was co-written by Phillips, produced by Ryan Hadlock and came after the release of “Dance With Me,” a song Phillips penned, along with his friend Tim Bruns, for his 2015 wedding to longtime girlfriend Hannah Blackwell. Listen to “Into The Wild” HERE.

A North American headline tour starts next month. Striking Matches will support on the first half of the tour followed by The Ballroom Thieves on the second half. For more information and to purchase tickets visit www.phillipphillips.com.

Since releasing his five-times-platinum debut single "Home" in spring 2012, Phillips has released two chart-topping albums. The Georgia-bred 26-year-old saw his first full-length effort, The World from the Side of the Moon, go platinum after debuting at #4 on the Billboard Top 200. Behind the Light offered up the folk-rock radio hit "Raging Fire." Phillips spent this past summer on tour with Goo Goo Dolls.

NAMM '18 news: RME booth performances

German interface manufacturer RME [NAMM 2018 booth 14701] will showcase a new high-end audio DAC and a flexible software mixer, based on its TotalMix platform, for recording and live sound professionals.

During the four-day exhibition, Ferrofish and myMix will also unveil new products including PULSE16 converters and myMix II — an exciting v2 update that includes powerful Dante compatibility, among other features, making it suitable for studio as well as live use.

The RME booth is sure to draw music fans over the course of the exhibition, hosting former Tower of Power lead singer and Ambassador of Soul artist Ellis Hall Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 11 am, 2pm and 4pm, as well as legendary bassist Chuck Rainey and veteran drummer John Martinez both of Rhythm Intensive on Friday and Saturday at noon.

Breaking New Ground at NAMM 2018
RME is set to unveil its ADI-2 DAC for NAMM 2018, a compact and extremely flexible two-channel high-end Digital-to-Analog converter. The best-in-class unit — which also serves as a top quality headphone amplifier — supports up to 192 kHz sample rates, while offering top-notch conversion and a range of connectivity options. All with the unsurpassed stable performance and German engineering that RME users have come to expect over the last 20 years.

Additionally, RME will also highlight its new TotalMix v1.50 update as well as Total Mix Remote, which now supports network remote over TCP. TotalMix Remote, offering full network remote control for all TotalMix and TotalMix FX software, is now available for every RME interface, and will be available for Mac, PC and iOS. The TotalMix Remote is perfectly suited for FOH engineers and recording studios whose workflow requires control of TotalMix from a remote location.

Meantime, myMix, also at booth 14701, is set to unveil its myMix II, a v2 studio modification of its popular myMix personal monitor mixing and recording system. The new system features two local network inputs, which can be mic, line or instrument level. The unit can operated as a self-contained unit, or integrated with any analog or digital mixing consoles. The myMix II also sports brand-new Dante capability connectivity via any format — Dante, MADI, ADAT, analog — and will operate seamlessly with any digital console on the market.

Ferrofish will highlight its new PULSE16 and PULSE16 MX, which both provide an entirely new range of A/D D/A conversion options — and among various formats such as ADAT and MADI. Presented at an incredible price point, both the PULSE16 and PULSE16 MX use SFP technology, making the PULSE16 and Verto series capable of single and multimode MADI by the user. The PULSE16 and PULSE16 MX are the first offerings in the PULSE series.

The Power of Live Music Through myMix
On Thursday, Friday and Saturday during NAMM, composer, producer and former Tower of Power lead singer Ellis Hall will perform at RME’s booth at 11am, 2pm and 4pm. For each of his performances, Hall will be hooked up to the new myMix II personal mixing and recording system.

On Friday and Saturday of the show, legendary bassist Chuck Rainey will perform alongside veteran drummer and Rhythm Intensive partner John Martinez at noon. The members of the paramusic education organization will perform through myMix systems.
