The return of Erasure

photo: Doron Gild
Erasure (Andy Bell and Vince Clarke) have announced details of their 17th album, World Be Gone, out on Mute on May 19.

It is the follow up to 2014’s The Violet Flame, and follows the band’s recent 30th anniversary celebrations.

About the songs, Vince Clarke says, “Obviously the current political climate lends itself to lots of ideas.” Andy Bell continues, “I think there’s an under swell of opinion, and people are slowly waking up. I’m hoping that people will take the album in a positive way, that they’ll use it as optimistic rabble-rousing music.”

Watch the trailer for the new album HERE.

The BRIT and Ivor Novello winning pop duo have released a staggering number of albums, including 5 UK Number 1’s and 17 top 10 singles (35 singles charted in the UK Top 40) and their recent best of, Always, saw Erasure entering the Top 10 album charts once again.

Erasure is special guest on Robbie Williams’ 2017 stadium tour taking place in the summer. Ahead of those dates, Erasure perform three headline shows: May 27 in Glasgow, May 28 in Manchester and May 29 at London’s historic Roundhouse. Full details below.

World Be Gone, written, performed and produced by Erasure and mixed by Matty Green, will be available on CD, ltd edition orange vinyl, regular vinyl & cassette and is available to pre-order now. As a special thank you to fans, everyone who pre-orders the album by 7 April (through the dedicated World Be Gone pre-order site) will get their name included in the album artwork. 500 copies of the album will be signed and all pre-orders give access to the exclusive fan ticket pre-sale for the band’s forthcoming headline shows. Garbage autobiographical coffee table book release to coincide with summer tour

Garbage's THIS IS THE NOISE THAT KEEPS ME AWAKE, an autobiographical coffee table book, is due out July 4 via Akashic Books.

Now, for the first time, the band's four members (Shirley Manson, Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, and Butch Vig) tell the story of their incredible journey in their own words. The book includes never before seen photographs of the band as well as pieces written by each of the four band members. THIS IS THE NOISE THAT KEEPS ME AWAKE was written with former Rolling Stone journalist Jason Cohen.

"We were starting to forget what we wanted to remember," said Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson. "Twenty two years is a long time to keep track of the magic and the madness."

THIS IS THE NOISE THAT KEEPS ME AWAKE is available for pre-order now HERE. The limited edition pre-order bundle includes a hardcover copy of the book, a custom-made collectible box, and a 12" vinyl with six never before released live recordings of ballads: "Milk", "You Look So Fine", "Cup of Coffee", "Bleed Like Me", "Beloved Freak", and "Even Though Our Love Is Doomed".

Earlier this month, Garbage announced a co-headline North American tour with Blondie that will kick off on July 5 in Saratoga, CA and wrap on August 12 in Dallas, TX. John Doe & Exene Cervenka will provide support on the first leg of the tour and Deap Vally for the second leg. Tickets for the Rage and Rapture tour are on sale now and available HERE.

Midnight Oil reunion news

This is exciting. I interviewed and reviewed the Oils during the 1990s. Read on for more info about the reunion tour and career retrospectives...

Legendary Australian rock band Midnight Oil today announced their first world tour in over two decades. They also unveiled plans to release three archival box sets including a collection called “The Overflow Tank” which will contain more than 14 hours of previously unreleased and rare material.

“The Great Circle 2017” World Tour will start and end with gigs in Sydney. Appropriately for a band forged in their hometown’s sweat-drenched beer barns, the tour will begin in mid-April with an intimate local pub gig (details to be announced closer to the date).

Midnight Oil will then perform 30 gigs around the world during the northern summer and share festival stages with artists like The Arcade Fire, Sting and The Pixies and finally return to New Zealand after 20 years. This long-awaited World Tour will climax with 18 special homecoming concerts through October-November 2017.

These will be Midnight Oil’s only shows in the last 15 years apart from two stadium benefit concerts (and their related small warmup gigs) in Australia in 2005 and 2009. It will also be the group’s most extensive world tour since their classic late 80’s/early 90’s albums like “Diesel & Dust”, “Blue Sky Mining” and “Earth & Sun & Moon” sold over 10 million copies around the globe.

All dates, venues and ticket information are listed below. Exact onsale times are deliberately being staggered from show to show to reduce website congestion so fans should pay careful attention to all the details at www.midnightoil.com/tour-dates. Extensive anti-scalping measures are being taken around this tour so fans are also formally advised to only buy tickets from the official ticket agencies listed on the band’s website to avoid possible fraud and needless overpayment via so called “reselling” sites.

In a press conference on Sydney Harbour, the band also announced the impending release of a remastered CD box set called “The Full Tank” featuring all of their existing albums and EP’s plus a mammoth new 4 CD/8 DVD trove called “The Overflow Tank” which will include over 14 hours of previously unreleased and rare material.

Both of these box sets will be housed in replica miniature water tanks like the one featured onstage at so many ‘Oils’ gigs. The band also unveiled their first ever complete Vinyl collection which will feature 11 remastered LP’s and two 12” EP’s all cut at Abbey Rd Studios in London. The three box sets will be released around the start of the tour but full tracklistings and pre-orders are available now via www.midnightoil.com.

Anyone with even a passing knowledge of Australian culture knows the basics of Midnight Oil’s story. They are the incendiary post-punk band from Sydney’s northern beaches who shunned pop TV shows, forging a fierce bond with their audience through nonstop gigging and jagged Oz rock classics like “Back On The Borderline”, “Bus To Bondi” and “Don’t Wanna Be The One”.

They are the musical innovators who turned high tech, anti-jingoistic polemic into hits like “Power & The Passion”, “U.S. Forces” and “When The Generals Talk”. They are the activists whose social justice campaigning includes “The Dead Heart”, “Redneck Wonderland”, “Beds Are Burning” and hijacking the 2000 Olympic Games Closing Ceremony with their “Sorry” suits.

They are the committed humanists and environmentalists who brought us anthems like “Blue Sky Mine”, “Forgotten Years” and “Say Your Prayers” plus a string of protests from the Tasmanian wilderness and the Jabiluka Uranium mine near Kakadu to mid-town Manhattan where they unforgettably stopped traffic outside the Exxon building after the Alaskan oil spill.

In keeping with the band’s longstanding commitments, their carbon footprint during “The Great Circle” World Tour will, of course, be fully offset and sustainability initiatives will be undertaken at all shows. Midnight Oil will also continue their collaborations with local and international environmental organizations including Greenpeace, supporting their campaigns on crucial issues like dangerous climate change and the imminent threats to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

MIDNIGHT OIL is:
Rob Hirst – Drums + Vocals
Martin Rotsey – Guitar
Peter Garrett – Lead Vocals
Jim Moginie – Guitar, Keyboards + Vocals
Bones Hillman – Bass + Vocals

Both REO Speedwagon and Styx have a touring and recording history together. In 2000, the bands recorded a live album and DVD called Arch Allies: Live at Riverport at Riverport Amphitheatre in Missouri. In 2009, the bands embarked on the "Can't Stop Rockin'" Tour and marked the occasion with a single, "Can't Stop Rockin'," co-written by Styx's Tommy Shaw and REO Speedwagon's Kevin Cronin. 2012 and 2013, REO Speedwagon and Styx hit the road together with the successful "The Midwest Rock 'n Roll Express" tour.

Most recently, in January, Styx and Don Felder shared the Las Vegas stage for an unforgettable five-night limited engagement, "Styx & Don Felder: Renegades In The Fast Lane," at The Venetian Theatre inside The Venetian Las Vegas. And, on the Rock Legends Cruise in February, Don Felder invited REO Speedwagon's Dave Amato up for a performance of "Hotel California."

"I called up Tommy Shaw last summer and we were both thinking the same thing: let's get the boys together, make some music, and have some fun. REO Speedwagon and Styx together is a head first plunge into the fountain of youth, an unstoppable force of nature. Add the amazing Don Felder to the mix and it's a thundering slam dunk!" – Kevin Cronin, REO Speedwagon (vocals, guitars, keyboards)

"Hitting the road with REO and Don Felder is gonna be an unforgettable evening of music for the fans and another chance to hang with these good time friends of ours who love the life as much as we do." – Tommy Shaw, Styx (vocals, guitars)

"Forget politics! Since music is the universal language, Styx, REO Speedwagon and Don Felder have a shout out to the universe: united we rock! At a venue near you this summer!"
– James "JY" Young (vocals, guitars)

"I'm so excited to be spending the summer on tour with my good friends STYX and REO. It's going to be a 'rocking' summer filled with hit after hit and tons of fun for everyone. Come on out and party, dance and sing with us this summer. It's going to be a blast." – Don Felder

A new soundtrack from "Nashville" the series

Love is in the air for the cast of CMT’s hit TV show “Nashville” who come together once again to showcase their harmonious blend of on-screen and in-studio chemistry on the new NASHVILLE DUETS album, available at digital retailers worldwide this Friday (2/17).

Released on Big Machine Records, the compilation features fan-favorite collaborations from some Music City’s most beloved characters and couples as heard throughout the series.

Since the show’s record-breaking Season 5 premiere on CMT last month, the drama is reaching new heights as “Nashville” garners continuous excitement around the world.

Earlier this week, it was announced that cast members Clare Bowen, Chris Carmack, Charles Esten, Jonathan Jackson and Sam Palladio will return to Europe for a June tour across Glasgow, Birmingham, London, Brighton, Nottingham, Manchester, Dublin and Belfast. Tickets and other details available here: https://www.ents24.com/uk/tour-dates/nashville-in-concert.

During Thursday’s new episode, the men of “Nashville” steal the spotlight debuting two new songs. Avery Barker (Jonathan Jackson) continues embracing music from an artist perspective with the Country-rocker “Eye Of The Storm” while Clay Carter (Joseph David-Jones) showcases his soulful vocal on “Close To The Fire,” contemplating his relationship with Maddie Conrad (Lennon Stella). Both songs were penned by Keelan Donovan and Brian Loschiavo and are available now on iTunes. Check out a preview of tomorrow’s episode here.

“Nashville” airs Thursdays at 9:00P ET/PT only on CMT. Don’t forget to join the conversation after the show during “NASHCHAT,” a CMT Facebook Live series, hosted by radio personality Amy Brown (@RadioAmy) at 10:00P ET here: https://www.facebook.com/cmt/videos/10154442269773196/.

Since the show’s 2012 debut, Big Machine Records has released eight “Nashville” soundtracks. The music has collectively sold more than one million albums and five million single-track downloads with over 200 million streams to date. “Nashville” has also garnered multiple Emmy, Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice awards nominations.

Bush update: new album, spring tour

photo: Daniel Seyum
Multi-platinum rock band BUSH have announced a March 10 release for much-anticipated new album BLACK AND WHITE RAINBOWS (via Caroline Records). The band (lead vocalist Gavin Rossdale, guitarist Chris Traynor, bassist Corey Britz and drummer Robin Goodridge) has released lead single “Mad Love,” which can be heard HERE and is available as an instant download by pre-ordering BLACK AND WHITE RAINBOWS on iTunes.

Written, recorded and produced by vocalist Gavin Rossdale, BLACK AND WHITE RAINBOWS is the follow-up to 2014’s Man on the Run and will arrive just prior to the band’s headlining tour of North America, which kicks off in May in Dallas, TX (see itinerary below).

Rossdale and crew recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of landmark album Razorblade Suitcase with a digital reissue featuring four rare bonus tracks, one of which — “Sleeper”—was previously unreleased. Liner notes were penned by the album’s producer, Steve Albini, which you can read HERE. Wrote Albini, “I am as proud of their friendship as I am of any work I did for them. They made the music they did because they loved it and they got popular because they worked their asses off, and eventually other people like it, too. You cannot ask any more of an artist.”

Over the course of their career, BUSH has sold close to 20 million records in the U.S. and Canada alone. They’ve also compiled an amazing string of 18 consecutive Top 40 hit singles on the Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts. Eleven of those hit the Top 5, six of which shot to No. 1: “Comedown,” “Glycerine,” “Machinehead,” “Swallowed,” “The Chemicals Between Us” and “The Sound of Winter.” Rossdale is currently serving as a coach on the hit television series, “The Voice UK,” and recently signed a publishing deal with Roc Nation.

Early Pink Floyd music set for special reissues

Pink Floyd will release a series of book-bound individual collections of the band’s seminal music from 1965-1972 on March, 24, 2017. The 6 individual collections were first released as part of ‘The Early Years 1965-1972’ box set.

Whether a fan of the early Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd, or to the final moments before ‘The Dark Side of The Moon’, there is something for everyone in these volumes for fans and newcomers alike. The stand-alone packages were originally released exclusively as the full ‘Early Years: 1965-1972’ box set that was reviewed as one of the best box sets of 2016 but are now available as separate volumes broken down by years 1965-1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971 and finally 1972. Outtakes and demos from the band’s early albums including ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn’, ‘A Saucerful Of Secrets’, ‘Meddle’ and ‘Atom Heart Mother’ are included in these packages.

Each package documents the creative genius behind each Pink Floyd recording and even the titles (CAMBRIDGE ST/ATION, GERMIN/ATION, DRAMATIS/ATION, DEVI/ATION, REVERB/ATION, OBFUSC/ATION) have been dreamed up by Roger Waters to give an insight into where the band was at that particular point in their career.

‘The Early Years: Individual Volumes’ afford fans the opportunity to hear the evolution of the band and witness their part in the cultural revolution from their earliest recordings and studio sessions to the years prior to the release of ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’, one of the biggest selling albums of all time. From the single Arnold Layne to the 20-minute epic Echoes, fans will see the invention of psychedelic progressive rock via an insightful collection that explores the Pink Floyd story from the time Roger Waters, Richard Wright, Nick Mason and Syd Barrett met at London’s Regent Street Polytechnic through to Syd’s departure and David Gilmour joining the band to form the iconic lineup.

For fans wishing to immerse themselves in the full Pink Floyd story, the complete box set ‘The Early Years: 1965-1972’ collates all of the individual volumes plus extra discs, collectables and memorabilia exclusive to the box set. In addition to the individual volumes and the deluxe set, a 2-CD highlights album ‘The Early Years – CRE/ATION’ is also available.

Product overview:

1965-1967 CAMBRIDGE ST/ATION 2 CD / DVD / Blu-ray

Covering Syd Barrett’s time with the band, from the pre-EMI demos, through the non-album hit singles and related tracks, the first volume also features previously unreleased tracks like Vegetable Man and In The Beechwoods (newly mixed), plus BBC session recordings. Pink Floyd have also acquired the tapes of an unreleased 1967 concert in Stockholm.

The DVD/Blu-ray includes historic TV performances plus some of Pink Floyd’s own film material:

Early 1965 recordings and early singles
Vegetable Man, In The Beechwoods, John Latham, Stockholm concert

Promo clips, TV appearances, rare footage
Replica memorabilia from the period

1968 GERMIN/ATION CD / DVD / Blu-ray

This volume explores the time immediately after Syd Barrett’s departure, when Pink Floyd were still writing singles and at the same time developing their own unique, more instrumentally-based style. There are non-album single releases, plus a recently discovered session at Capitol Records studios in Los Angeles, BBC sessions and other tracks.

DVD/Blu-ray includes the recently restored promo clip of Point Me At The Sky, some international TV performances and a selection of song material from other television shows:
Early singles, BBC Radio sessions

Tracks from Capitol Studios, LA

Promo clip, TV appearances, rare footage
Replica memorabilia from the period

1969 DRAMATIS/ATION 2 CD / DVD / Blu-ray

In 1969 Pink Floyd unveiled their 2-part conceptual live production of ‘The Man’ and ‘The Journey’, covering a 24-hour period of dreaming, waking and other activities. Never released in that form, however some of the songs were used on the ‘More’ soundtrack and the ‘Ummagumma’ album. This volume refers back to ‘The Man’ and ‘The Journey’ tour with live performances in Amsterdam and for the BBC in London, but also includes the bonus tracks from the ‘More’ soundtrack that were used in the film but not on record, plus non-album tracks like the early version of Embryo from the Harvest sampler ‘Picnic’.

Video material includes 20 minutes of ‘The Man’/‘The Journey’ rehearsal at the Royal Festival Hall, directed by Anthony Stern, including Afternoon (Biding My Time), The Beginning (Green Is The Colour), Nightmare (Cymbaline), Beset By Creatures Of The Deep and The End Of The Beginning (the last part of A Saucerful Of Secrets), plus other live performance footage from that year:

1970 DEVI/ATION 2 CD / 2 DVD / Blu-ray

At the end of 1969 and in the early part of 1970, Pink Floyd recorded and mixed their contribution to Michelangelo Antonioni’s alternative view of US society, ‘Zabriskie Point’. 3 songs were released on the soundtrack album, and a further 4 in the expanded CD edition in 1997. Never released on one Pink Floyd disc, this volume compiles remixed and updated versions of the ‘Zabriskie Point’ audio material.

In the same year, Pink Floyd scored their first UK Number One album with ‘Atom Heart Mother’, a collaboration with Ron Geesin, and the audio includes the first performance for the BBC, featuring an orchestra and choir, as well as, on DVD, the original Quad mix.

Video material includes a full hour of Pink Floyd performing live at San Francisco cable TV station KQED plus extracts from historic performances of ‘Atom Heart Mother’, and material from French TV coverage of the St. Tropez festival in Southern France.

In 1971 Pink Floyd recorded the ‘Meddle’ album, containing the LP side-long ‘Echoes’, regarded by many as laying the groundwork for ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’, and, as such, is an important part of the Pink Floyd canon.

This package includes part of the original demos, when the project gestated from ‘Nothing’ to ‘Return Of The Son Of Nothing’, as well as a contemporary BBC session recording.

Audio-visual material includes the original unreleased Quad mix of ‘Echoes’ but also material of live band performances in 1971, including songs performed with Roland Petit and his Marseille ballet company.

Concert footage and documentaries
Echoes original 4.0 Quad mix
Replica memorabilia from the period

1972 OBFUSC/ATION 2 CD / DVD / Blu-ray

In 1972 Pink Floyd travelled to Hérouville, north of Paris, to record at Strawberry Studios there, based in the town’s Chateau. In a remarkable two weeks, they wrote and recorded one of their most cohesive albums, ‘Obscured By Clouds’, the soundtrack to Barbet Schroeder’s ‘La Vallée’.

Additionally, 1972 saw the release of ‘Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii’, a film of the band performing without an audience in the historic Roman amphitheatre of Pompeii, directed by Adrian Maben. The video material includes the performances from the ‘Live At Pompeii’ film, edited to new 5.1 audio mixes, plus material from contemporary French TV as well as performances from Brighton Dome in June 1972 and further performances with the Roland Petit ballet company:
