Save Ferris to return after a long absence

Orange County ska-punk band Save Ferris will return in 2017 with their first new EP and headlining North American tour in over 15 years. The band will release the New Sound EP, on February 10th, which also marks the start of their tour.

Still led by original member Monique Powell, Save Ferris recently opened for No Doubt and Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

"Since this incarnation of Save Ferris first played together in 2013, the band and I have been working on new music, arranging schedules and selectively playing local shows to get ready for a tour. I have had to tell our fans to 'be patient, I promise it'll happen' for too long now! But now here we are. I can't believe we've made it this far....and now you get to see us in a town near you. For the first time in 15 years, Save Ferris is coming to get you! Are you ready?" - Monique Powell

For the EP, Save Ferris has called on fans directly to help fund the recording and release via a PledgeMusic campaign. The band is currently offering supporters a unique VIP experience that includes a soundcheck party, Q&A, meet & greet and photos with the band, as well as signed CDs, tote bags, signed certificates, pin sets, signed photos, a listening party and more. Go here for info: http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/saveferris.

Produced by Oingo Boingo bassist John Avila, New Sound not only marks Save Ferris' return, but as the title suggests, it also signals a new beginning for the band. After splitting with former band mates, Powell has embraced her ska and dub roots while moving forward with a contemporary sound.

John Wesley Harding (Wes Stace) teams with Jayhawks for next album

As a fan since the beginning and having done a few interviews with Wes in the past, I can't wait to hear this...

Acclaimed singer/songwriter Wesley Stace will release Wesley Stace’s John Wesley Harding on Feb. 24 via Yep Roc Records. Recorded with The Jayhawks—Gary Louris, Marc Perlman, Tim O’Reagan, and Karen Grotberg—at Flowers Studio in Minneapolis, the album was co-produced by Stace and Gary Louris.

Listen/share the first track “Let’s Evaporate,” written with Chas Cronk from the Strawbs, one of Stace’s favorite bands. The album is now available for pre-order here.

The album features 12 tracks chosen for these sessions by Stace, who says, “I always have a lot of songs, so I listened to every unused song I had, many of them quite recent, and picked 11 that I thought The Jayhawks (or The Wezhawks, as we started to call it) would sound great on. I also included a cover, “Don’t Turn Me Loose,” which is where the idea of our making a record together had originated: I saw them live and thought they’d sound great playing that song, and then I thought: and I should be singing it! And they liked the idea. And we did these twelve songs, and that’s it. Everything we recorded is on the record. No outtakes.”

The second album under his real name, the album’s title was chosen for a myriad of reasons including a) the urge to bring all of his art under one banner, b) Jeff Lynne’s ELO, and c) various cab ride conversations.

Track listing:

I Don’t Wanna Rock ‘n Roll
You’re a Song
Better Tell No One Your Dreams
How To Fall
For Me and You
Hastings Pier
Audience of One
Don’t Turn Me Loose
The Wilderness Years
What You Want Belongs to You
Remember Me
Let’s Evaporate

Lee DeWyze news

Singer/songwriter Lee DeWyze will cap off a busy 2016 with 8 U.S. tour dates along the East Coast. DeWyze will treat audiences to a show full of songs from his latest album Oil & Water, along with additional unreleased material. New dates will continue to be added into the new year.

"Recording and writing Oil and Water was the most liberating experience I've had creating music so far in my career," DeWyze explained. "It has been fulfilling and special to be able to tour around the US sharing it with people and making new fans. I look forward to bookending the year with a tour of the Northeast."

Lee DeWyze discovered music at an early age and developed a strong passion for songwriting as he listened to several influential albums growing up in the suburbs of Chicago.

His depth as a songwriter along with his earnest ability to craft a balance of harmony, melody and deep emotion is a direct reflection of some of Lee's earliest influences including Simon and Garfunkel, Cat Stevens and Johnny Cash. As a teen Lee learned to play guitar, piano and drums which eventually led to him writing his own songs. Before the age of 20 he recorded two albums for an independent label in Chicago while working two jobs. Lee decided to audition for FOX's American Idol and was crowned the winner of Season 9.

After winning American Idol, Lee DeWyze released his major label debut album Live It Up (RCA) in 2010. His critically acclaimed album Frames (Vanguard Records) followed in 2013 and the single "Fight" reached the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot AC charts for 10 weeks. The accompanying music video, produced and directed by Lee, won first place at the Los Angeles Indie Film Festival.

In 2014 the song "Blackbird Song" was featured on the hit show The Walking Dead and went on to garner over 6 million YouTube views, 3 million Spotify streams and 75,000 singles sold. In 2016, after signing with Shanachie Records, Lee released his latest album Oil & Water. He spent much of 2016 on the road and writing new music which he will release in 2017.

White Lies tour dates, new video

White Lies has unveiled Hold Back Your Love, the new video directed by David Pablos.

Band member Charles Cave explains, "It's hard for me to talk about 'Hold Back Your Love' in a measured way. We all absolutely love this song. I felt the same after we recorded 'Death', 'Bigger Than Us', or 'Big TV'. Call it emotional attachment, or hopefully just a 'good ear', this song feels like it confidently sits itself down on the front row of White Lies songs that fall into elusive 'encore' territory. I'm struggling to remember how this song came about, which is always a positive feeling as it suggests the process was a totally pleasurable and inspirational one, but I know that it was written quickly and the melodies seemed to do that dreamy thing of writing themselves. I think we were in a 'Tango In The Night' state of pop when this song came about, and you can definitely hear that in the middle section. But equally, (and this band has been a huge influence since we were fifteen) there's a solid Talking Heads stomp that, dare I say it, you can almost dance to!"

The new album Friends is now available on CD, vinyl, picture disc, digital download and streaming formats, as well as a special box set edition which includes a cassette and four exclusive bonus tracks.

It was recorded in Bryan Ferry's private studio in London's Olympia and was self-produced by the band. White Lies enlisted Grammy Award-winning engineer James Brown (Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys), David Wrench (Caribou, FKA Twigs) on mixing duties and long-term collaborator Ed Buller who contributed additional production.

Eric Clapton celebrated his 70th birthday last year by writing in a tour program, “I swear this is it, no more…..I know I've been threatening retirement for the last fifty years, but I didn't think I'd ever really want to stop. I love what I do and always have done, but over the last few decades I've found what I was always really looking for, a loving family who love me just the way I am, which means I can relax and rest when I need to, and more and more I treasure the beauty of that....”

It went on to say, “Hopefully, I might be able to remember and breathe some life into this old stuff…. in truth believe me, with these great guys to play with, I'll be having the time of my life!”

PBS news: ACL Presents the Americana Music Festival 2016

Austin City Limits (ACL) returns to Nashville for a special broadcast featuring performance highlights from this year’s Americana Honors & Awards. ACL Presents: Americana Music Festival 2016 premieres Nov. 19 on PBS and delivers dazzling performances that represent the genre’s diversity and excellence.

The music-filled hour features many of the night's award winners and honorees, including buzzed-about newcomers and icons who helped define the genre; among them: George Strait, Margo Price, Jason Isbell, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Weir, Alison Krauss, Steve Earle, Parker Millsap, Dwight Yoakam, William Bell, and Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell.

The special airs Nov. 19 on PBS at 8pm CT/9pm ET. ACL airs weekly on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings for times) and full episodes are made available online for a limited time immediately following the initial broadcast. The show's official hashtag is #acltv.

Recorded live at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium on Sept. 21, The Americana Music Association's 15th Annual Honors & Awards ceremony is a celebration of music that is authentic, diverse and original from many genres, both traditional and contemporary. “If you can taste the dirt through your ears, that is Americana,” says Americana Music Association Executive Director Jed Hilly. “It is music that is derived or inspired by American roots traditions.”

Acclaimed singer/songwriter Jason Isbell, who took top honors for Album of the Year and Song of the Year, gives a captivating performance of his “If It Takes A Lifetime,” accompanied by his wife, fiddler Amanda Shires, and band The 400 Unit. Roots giants who died within the last year, Merle Haggard, Guy Clark and Ralph Stanley, are honored with one-of-a-kind performances: the show opens with the night’s Lifetime Achievement Award Honoree for Performance, Grateful Dead founder Bob Weir, in tribute to Merle Haggard, performing a rendition of the country outlaw’s iconic “Mama Tried.” Steve Earle delivers Guy Clark’s classic “Desperados Waiting For A Train,” calling out “See you when I get there Maestro,” at the song’s close. Roots titan Alison Krauss performs a stunning a cappella version of bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley’s “Gloryland,” joined by stalwarts Buddy Miller, Melonie Cannon and Stuart Duncan.

In true Americana style, the broadcast is loaded with musical moments and collaborations. Legendary duet partners Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell, awarded Duo/Group of the year, perform a stirring “Bring It On Home.” Bonnie Raitt, a 2015 Lifetime Achievement honoree, offers a new track, “Gypsy in Me,” backed by gospel greats The McCrary Sisters. She returns to join Stax soul legend William Bell, the night’s Lifetime Achievement Award honoree for Songwriting, on the slow-burn “The Three of Me,” accompanied by producer John Leventhal on guitar. Honky-tonk maverick Dwight Yoakam delivers a blistering gem, "What I Don't Know," from his acclaimed new release Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars… alongside Stuart Duncan on fiddle.

The genre’s breakout newcomers give show-stopping performances, including the Emerging Artist Award-winner, Nashville rebel Margo Price with her “Tennessee Song.” Americana sensation Parker Millsap performs a powerful “Heaven Sent” from his critically-acclaimed Album of the Year-nominated release, joined by standouts Sarah Jarosz and Aiofe O’Donovan on backing vocals. Chart-toppers The Lumineers light up the stage with a new song, “Angela.” Emerging Artist nominees Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats perform “Wasting Time,” showing the full range of the Americana spectrum.

A king of country music, George Strait performs his signature “King of Broken Hearts” alongside the songwriter, Jim Lauderdale, for a thrilling close. The hourlong broadcast is hosted by Americana kingpin Lauderdale, and performers are backed by a first class house band led by Nashville mainstay Buddy Miller featuring it-producer Dave Cobb with Stuart Duncan, Fred Eltringham, Steve Fishell, Matt Rollings, Chris Wood, and The McCrary Sisters.

The album will be available for pre-order on Nov. 18 accompanied by two songs: Alternative Radio Top 20 hit "Fire Escape" and "Brooklyn, You're Killing Me."

In celebration of the release, AMITW will embark on a national headlining 'Zombies in America' U.S. tour with support from Atlas Genius and Night Riots. The tour kicks off in March. McMahon talks about the impetus behind Zombies on Broadway - "I wrote this album in the middle of a whirlwind, when the future was unclear. I found my way to the city, thinking I could settle a score with a ghost. You can't, so I came home and rewrote the ending," he says.

Having been diagnosed with cancer in New York in 2005, McMahon found himself wanting to return to the city to battle some demons leading to the creation of Zombies On Broadway. Its lead single, "Fire Escape" shares the tale of McMahon's experience in the city that never sleeps; it's already reached #17 on Alternative radio and is currently growing at AAA and Rock as well. His self-titled debut launched the cross-genre smash single, "Cecilia and the Satellite," a Top 5 hit across both Alternative and AAA radio, Top 10 hit at Hot AC and also climbed up the Pop chart.

Aside from his professional successes, McMahon is an 11 year survivor of leukemia and founder of the Dear Jack Foundation, one of the first Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) specific cancer foundations which advocates for and supports initiatives that benefit AYAs diagnosed with cancer. 'Trainspotting' soundtrack re-released for 20th Anniversary

This was definitely among the classic soundtracks of the Nineties...

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the drama Trainspotting, Rhino/Parlophone has reissued the original soundtrack on limited edition 180-gram orange vinyl, as a double-LP for the first time in North America and on CD.

Based on the Irvine Welsh novel of the same name, the film version of Trainspotting, directed by Danny Boyle, became a cult sensation. Centered around the heroin subculture of Edinburgh in the 1980s, the film is occupied with surrealism and black comedy.

TRAINSPOTTING: MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE replicates the original artwork, including special silver spot finish on the jacket. The album includes signature tracks "Lust For Life," a hit for Iggy Pop in 1977, as well as Underworld's quintessential club track "Born Slippy," which was available exclusively via the soundtrack when it was originally released. In addition, fans will find tracks from Pulp, Blur, New Order, Primal Scream, Lou Reed, Brian Eno and more.

The reissue also comes on the heels of the announcement of T2: Trainspotting, which hits theaters in early 2017 and stars many of the original cast members of Trainspotting. Let's join Renton, Begbie, Sickboy, to re-experience this timeless classic, 20 years later.

In stores today: Ty Herndon's 'House on Fire'

Ty Herndon’s new album House On Fire is now available on iTunes and Amazon. He has released three music videos in support of the release: “That Kind of Night,” “House On Fire” and “Fighter” - all directed by Trent Atkinson. Two other music videos have been shot and will be released soon.

The singer will appear on Prime Country (Ch. 54) as guest a DJ on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. ET as well as Sunday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. ET.

House On Fire is a collection of 12 new contemporary songs, which are co-produced by Herndon and Erik Halbig, with Drew Davis joining as co-producer on six of the songs.

Having signed with BFD through Sony/RED Distribution, Herndon returned to the Sony family, where he made his chart-topping debut in the mid '90s.

Among Herndon’s country hits: several No. 1’s (“What Mattered Most,” “Living in a Moment,” “It Must Be Love,” “Loved Too Much”) and top 10 charters (“I Want My Goodbye Back,” “Loved Too Much,” “A Man Holding On (To a Woman Letting Go),” “Hands of a Working Man”). Def Leppard launch PledgeMusic campaign for upcoming live set

Over the summer, Def Leppard completed a tour of North American. Slated for Feb. 10, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release their concert film "And There Will Be A Next Time - Live From Detroit" on DVD+2CD, Blu-ray+2CD and Digital Video. The film was shot at the DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, MI.

Front man Joe Elliott said, “I had this idea that we should film one of the shows from the 2016 tour because apart from the ‘Viva Hysteria’ shows, we hadn’t actually had a live performance filmed since 1988. With a new album out that was being so well received, it was just a case of where to do it. From the second the house lights went down, we could see the sun setting from the stage, and the energy from the crowd just seemed to intensify. It was a good choice and a great way to document Def Leppard in 2016.”

With two Diamond Awards (10 million album copies) to their credit, Def Leppard put out a self-titled album last year featuring the singles “Dangerous” and “Let’s Go,” which hit #1 on the Billboard Top Rock Albums Chart.

As a bonus, the DVD set will include the official music videos for “Let’s Go”, “Dangerous,” and “Man Enough” and the lyric video for “Let’s Go.”

In anticipation of the DVD release, Def Leppard and Eagle Rock Entertainment are launching a special PledgeMusic pre-order today. Fans who participate will gain early access to a few select tracks, including “Dangerous” and “Rock On” as well as exclusive merchandise from PledgeMusic. CLICK HERE to pre-order.

The Who's 'My Generation' to get deluxe reissue treatment

This should be an amazing reissue. The digital box set arrives Nov. 18, while the physical CDs follow on Dec. 9 and the LPs on Feb. 10. Read all the details from the press release below...

In the half century since its release, The Who’s debut album My Generation hasn’t lost any of its raw, visceral power and still stands as the ultimate musical declaration of teenage rebellion. The title track alone has been covered innumerable times by the likes of Oasis, Green Day, Patti Smith, Billy Joel, Alice Cooper and Iron Maiden amongst many more.

Back in 1965, the band was considered to be so dangerous that the tailors tasked with turning a Union Jack into a pop art mod jacket for the cover feared that they would be jailed for desecration of the nation’s flag.

The Who’s surly demeanour that day in 1965 at Surrey Docks and the brazen appropriation of the symbol of state is the best advert possible for My Generation. It’s an album that sounds like it looks: terse, confrontational and full of youthful angst and energy.

Brunswick Records first issued My Generation in the UK in December 1965, and later in the U.S. under the title The Who Sings My Generation in April 1966, and was produced by Shel Talmy who shot to fame with his work with The Kinks, a group that the teenage Pete Townshend admired greatly.

During a break in touring in 2015 Pete Townshend discovered tapes in his audio archive featuring previously unheard demos for the album which also included three totally unreleased songs tha! t The Who hadn’t ever revisited “The Girls I Could Have Had,” “As Children We Grew” and “My Own Love.”

The spectacular 79-track, five-disc super-deluxe edition of My Generation features these unheard songs as well as unreleased demos, unreleased alternate mixes, new remasters and a stereo remix which was created using new overdubs from Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend. For this mix Townshend used the same exact guitars and amps as the original album with Roger using same type of microphone.

The super-deluxe edition also features a stunning 80-page color book with many rare and unseen period photos, candid and insightful new notes from Pete Townshend and period memorabilia.

Of the super-deluxe box set Pete Townshend commented “Gathering these demos for this collection has been enjoyable; it’s wonderful for me to have these tapes made fifty-two years ago to listen to. I hope you enjoy them. They have a naiveté and innocence, a simplicity and directness, and an ingenuousness that reveals me as a young man struggling to keep up with the more mature and developed men around me. What an incredible group of strong, talented, young and engaging men they were!”

Morrissey concert review: Irvine, Calif., Night #2

2014 photo by Kelly Swift
When it comes to political views, Morrissey never minces words.

So his choice comments about the previous day's U.S. presidential election result while onstage Wednesday night at UC Irvine hardly came as a surprise.

Before the second of two sold out Bren Events Center concerts, a half hour long assortment of rare 1960s and '70s film, television and music clips (ranging from Ike & Tina Turner, Sonny & Cher to Ramones, Alice Cooper and New York Dolls) played on a video screen. Fans who likely saw similar archival material on past tours chatted away or attended to their cell phones.

Then Morrissey (pictured above in Los Angeles) and the tight five-piece band launched their 90-minute performance with a strong take on "Shoplifters of the World Unite" - a top 20 U.K. hit in 1987 from The Smiths that the veteran singer hadn't dusted off live in at least three years. At one point, he put a fist to head and said, "today is the first day of the rest of your nightmares."

Playing a handful of modern rock radio hits, half the 21-song set was comprised of 2000s material, including three from Morrissey's underrated, most recent effort "World Peace is None of Your Business." The intriguing title track saw him attempt to console people by saying "don't be too hard on America; statistically only 20 percent voted for you-know-who." Gustavo Manzur did a didgeridoo intro and Jesse Tobias let loose on a searing lead guitar solo while Morrissey pointedly sang, "each time you vote/you support the process." The lyrics partially revolved around police brutality and followed a similar theme as the intense "Ganglord." Despite health scares in recent years, Morrissey, 57, was in robust vocal form throughout the evening and the sound was fine.

Some understated drama in "Speedway" concluded with one of the musicians singing in Spanish, no doubt a nod to the Englishman's heavy Latino fanbase. Shrouded in smoke, he sang with arms outstretched, Messiah-like, during "Jack the Ripper" and Tobias let loose with more impressive careening guitar work.

For the melodic splendor of "Alma Matters," the singer shook hands with some people up front, clutched his shirt and undid a few buttons for effect. It was definitely a highlight. The same held true for a glorious "I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris." A French flag image projected on the backdrop brought to mind the solidarity we felt after the terror attacks in that country a year ago. Predictably, one fan threw gladiolas onstage and a French horn solo drew loud cheers.

Before the stately "Everyday is Like Sunday," Morrissey described the election as a "perilous day in political history" and compared it to 9/11. Fans sang along loudly to the eerie lyrics about Armageddon and nuclear bombs. The percolating "Ouija Board, Ouija Board" was equally enticing. Touchingly, "One of Our Own" was dedicated to Jennifer, a fan with colon cancer who attended the previous Friday's show in Irvine, met her idol backstage and unfortunately died on Tuesday.

The shuffling, accordion and trumpet-infused "First of the Gang to Die" was exuberant as ever. Then Morrissey brought the energy level way down for The Smiths' dirge "Meat is Murder." Here, he introduced it by saying, "If you remove humans from the Earth, the planet thrives; if you remove animals, the planet dies." Gruesome images of animals being bludgeoned for consumption were projected behind the band. This downer moment has been a regular part of Morrissey shows for several years. I think most fans get that he believes vegetarianism is the way to go by now.

Elsewhere, ebullient early solo hit "Suedehead" prompted another loud singalong and a jolt of energy within the venue. The main set concluded with frenzied Smiths song "What She Said" and the encore was a blast through The Ramones' "Judy is a Punk."
