Coachella '16 news: The Damned

One of the acts playing Coachella Festival 1&2 in April is The Damned. They have a new DVD on the way...

After an acclaimed run at cinemas worldwide, THE DAMNED: Don't You Wish That We Were Dead, is coming to home video on May 20.

The film was directed/produced by Wes Orshoski, and is the first fully authorized documentary on punk pioneers The Damned.

Filmed over three years and premiered at SXSW 2015, THE DAMNED: Don't You Wish That We Were Dead tells the story of the third prong in the holy trinity of U.K. punk.

In advance of both the Sex Pistols and the Clash, The Damned was the first U.K. punk band to release a single (1976's immortal "New Rose"), the first to release an album ('77's frenetic Damned Damned Damned), and the first to tour America (planting their flag at CBGB in April 1977). The Damned are the only band from London's 1976 punk explosion still touring the world today.

Besides Damned founders Captain Sensible, Dave Vanian, Rat Scabies and Brian James, the film includes appearances by such one-time bandmates as The Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde, Mick Jones (The Clash) and Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead, as well as such rock and/or punk luminaries as Nick Mason (Pink Floyd), Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols), Steve Diggle (Buzzcocks), JJ Burnel (The Stranglers), Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode), Billy Idol, Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat/Fugazi), Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys), Keith Morris (Black Flag/Circle Jerks/OFF!), Dexter Holland (The Offspring), Jack Grisham (T.S.O.L.), and more.

Named after a lyric in the title track of the Damned's 1979 album, Machine Gun Etiquette, the film charts the band's unique history, bitter infighting and legendary bad behavior (drummer Scabies is blamed for creating punk's "gobbing," or spitting, phenomenon).

It takes viewers into the toilets once scrubbed by Captain Sensible and viewers follow the Damned on their world-wide 35th anniversary tour in 2011 -- with estranged band founders Scabies and James seen on screen answering that trek with a snarling celebration of their own.

In a bizarre twist of fate, other former members find themselves being treated for the same form of cancer by the same doctor in the same Welsh cancer ward; elsewhere, the band's founding members are seen grappling with their legacy, and the fallout from missed and/or bungled business decisions that have kept them painfully working class for most of the past four decades.

The bonus features find Captain Sensible taking viewers on a tour of Croydon, the south London town that gave rise to the Damned, and he busks on the streets of Hollywood with actor/musician/comedian Fred Armisen, a huge Damned fan. Elsewhere, the full story of the band's involvement and eventual ousting from the Sex Pistols' fabled Anarchy in the U.K. tour of 1976 is told in detail for the first time.

The Damned is also credited with helping to ignite the punk scene in America. In 1977, the Damned were the first of the U.K. punks to play in both New York (CBGBs) and Los Angeles (Starwood).

A West Coast tour of the US starts in California and includes two appearances at Coachella (April 16 & 23), San Francisco (April 14, Great American Music Hall); Solana Beach (April 19, Belly Up); Pomona (April 20, The Glass House); and Hollywood (April 21, The Roxy).

The band officially kicks off its 40th anniversary tour on May 20 with a sold-out gig at The Royal Albert Hall in London.

Comprehensive career retrospective from Paul McCartney imminent

photo by Linda McCartney, circa 1970
Pure McCartney, a new compilation of solo, Wings and Fireman work set for June 10 via MPL/Concord, includes 67 songs, starting with McCartney in 1970 through "Hope For The Future," the 2014 track taken from the Destiny video game.

There are curios for the superfans and some of Paul's personal favorites—all handpicked by the man himself.

"Me and my team came up with the idea of putting together a collection of my recordings with nothing else in mind other than having something fun to listen to," Paul says of this project.

"Maybe it's to be enjoyed on a long car journey or an evening at home or at a party with friends? So we got our heads together and came up with these diverse playlists from various periods of my long and winding career.” The set will be a
vailable in three different formats; 2CD, 4CD and 4LP.

4CD version features 67 tracks, more than 40 of which were Top 40 hits including "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Live and Let Die", "Mull Of Kintyre", "Ebony and Ivory" and more.

As a songwriter, Paul has never stood still, delving into countless genres and styles. Pure McCartney charts the unstoppable adventures of McCartney's unique and eclectic songwriting talents and shines a light on his post-Beatles artistic achievements.

"The word 'career' is a bit misleading because to me it has been more like a musical adventure than a proper job," says Paul, reflecting on the Pure McCartney tracklisting. "It pleases me, and often amazes me, that I've been involved in the writing and recording of so many songs, each of them so different from the others."

'The Highwaymen Live' box set on the way in May

Columbia/Legacy will release The Highwaymen Live - American Outlaws, a deluxe new 3CD/1DVD (or 3CD/1 Blu-ray) box set from country music's legendary first supergroup on May 20.

It includes: a) two audio discs recorded live at Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, New York, March 14, 1990; b) an audio disc with tracks recorded live at various Farm Aid Festivals and c) a previously unreleased full-length concert film recorded live at Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, New York, March 14, 1990 and transferred from the original film reels especially for this collection.

Additionally, there is a previously unreleased recording of "One Too Many Mornings," an alternate take of a Bob Dylan song which appeared on Heroes, a 1986 collaboration album by Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings.

The track's new incarnation on The Highwaymen Live - American Outlaws includes vocals recorded by Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson in 2014, produced by longtime Willie Nelson colleague and band member Mickey Raphael and remixed by Tony Castle.

This compilation is produced by Mickey Raphael from original recordings produced by Chips Moman. The box set includes a booklet featuring new liner notes penned by noted music scholar and journalist Mikal Gilmore.

Columbia/Legacy will also release a new single disc compilation, The Very Best of The Highwaymen.

"The Highwaymen: Live At Nassau Coliseum" (a special broadcast edit of the concert film featured on The Highwaymen Live - American Outlaws) is part of special programming premiering on PBS stations as part of June Pledge 2016 (check local listings).

Discover the story behind the pioneering outlaw country music supergroup that featured Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson, told through vintage performances and new interviews about life on the road and in the studio when

"American Masters - The Highwaymen: Friends Till The End," a new feature-length documentary, premieres on Friday, May 27 at 9pm on PBS (check local listings).

The Highwaymen--Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson--were country music's first bonafide "supergroup," an epic quartet of blockbuster star power comprised of the four prime forces of America's outlaw country music revolution. An essential musical and cultural influence, the Highwaymen were active for the decade spanning 1985 to 1995, recorded three major label albums, charted hit singles (including their Number 1 debut, "Highwayman," which won the Best Country Song Grammy Award in 1986) and performed a variety of shows achieving mythic status for those lucky enough to have been there.

"There’s the four of us standing there, grouped around microphones. The Highwaymen. John, Kris, Willie, and me. I don’t think there are any other four people like us," wrote Waylon Jennings in Waylon: An Autobiography. "John says that we came together because we all have a life commitment to the music. We know the same songs, but we sing them from different perspectives. We can blend the early country of the Carter Family with Texas swing, southern gospel, and rockabilly, and each of us feels comfortable singing real slices of life. There’s not one of us who hasn’t come face to face with his own mortality, and many’s the time we’ve gone through our struggles and survivals together....That’s our friendship, unlocking any door that stands between us, and it keeps four very different individuals together."

ACM nominee Eric Paslay will be 'Dressed in Black' this summer

ACM nominee Eric Paslay will release his sophomore album Dressed in Black this summer on EMI Records Nashville.

He co-wrote all 12 of the album’s tracks, including the first single “High Class,” which debuted as the No. 1 most added song at country radio.

Produced by Marshall Altman, it is the follow-up to Eric’s critically acclaimed debut self-titled album that produced three hits - No.1 platinum-selling “Friday Night,” gold certified “Song About A Girl” and ACM nominated “She Don’t Love You.”

On the making of
Dressed in Black, he says, “I’m grateful that we are getting to celebrate some life in another album. I always strive for, as an artist and musician, something that lasts. Not just popular now. It’s not just something on a page, but it somehow finds you in a restaurant, or on a dance floor, or in your car alone that makes you go ‘what is that?’"

For a look at the making of the album, go to https://youtu.be/Ki2TWg37nNU

This weekend, his tune “She Don’t Love You” is up for “Song of The Year” at the Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas on April 3.
In July, Paslay joins the Toby Keith tour.
As a songwriter, he has celebrated five No. 1 hits, including “Even If It Breaks Your Heart” (Eli Young Band), “Barefoot Blue Jean Night” (Jake Owen), “Angel Eyes” (Love & Theft), “Rewind” (Rascal Flatts) and “Friday Night,” the smash lead single from his critically acclaimed self-titled debut album.
The Temple, Texas native is a recent Grammy nominee (first as a recording artist) in the Best Country Duo/Group category for “The Driver,” performed by Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley, featuring Eric and Dierks Bentley.

New EP due from Jonathan Jackson's band

I really enjoyed the band's last full length effort and am an avid viewer of "Nashville," so I look forward to hearing the new songs...

Jonathan Jackson + Enation have returned to the studio with Grammy nominated producer Greg Archilla (Matchbox 20, Collective Soul) to record Blame-shifter, their new EP they’ll self release on their own label, Hilasterion Records (distributed through Sony RED) on May 13.

On break from filming his hit TV show "Nashville," Jackson and the band recorded 5 new songs for the band’s EP plus a cover of “Unchained Melody” recorded live at The Grand Ole Opry. The new songs will also be a part of their next full length album which will be announced later this year.

The past two years have been a whirlwind for the band. They partnered with Loud & Proud Records to release Radio Cinematic.

For the new EP, the band decided to be fully independent again so they can be more interactive with their fans. They created a PledgeMusic pre-order campaign to allow their fans to be a part of the making of Blame-shifter.

Fans will be the first to get the new EP as well as have access to exclusive experiences and items, which will only be available until April 5, including a variety of autographed merchandise options, a making of Blame-shifter documentary film, VIP meet & greet opportunities and even an executive producer credit on the album among other great selections that are still available.

"We’re so excited about our brand new music and the opportunity to hit the road and share it with our fans,” says the band. “We made a record that has its roots in the kind of alt rock and live energy we grew up with. Partnering with our fans through Pledgemusic has been invigorating and we can’t wait to play the new music on tour this summer!”

Jonathan Jackson is a five-time Daytime Emmy Award-winning actor for his role on General Hospital. He is also known for his roles in many other projects, including Deep End of the Ocean, Tuck Everlasting, Insomnia and currently stars as “Avery Barkley” in the prime time drama Nashville. Fitz and The Tantrums was recorded in the band's hometown of Los Angeles. Jesse Shatkin (Sia, Matt & Kim) produced eight of the album's eleven tracks. Fitz produced "Fadeback" while Joel Little (Lorde) produced "Do What You Want" and Ricky Reed (Jessie J) helmed "HandClap."

Brandy Clark readies 'Big Day in a Small Town'

I was really impressed by Clark when I caught her live on Jennifer Nettles' previous tour. I look forward to the new material...

Four time Grammy nominee and critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Brandy Clark is following up her 2013 smash debut album 12 Stories with the release of Big Day in a Small Town, to be released June 10 on Warner Bros. Records (available for pre-order beginning April 1). With “Girl Next Door" serving as the first single, Big Day in a Small Town is Clark's first major-label album. It was produced by Jay Joyce.

“When I made 12 Stories, I think my dreams were a lot more realistic, in that I didn't expect a lot to happen... then it did,” Clark says. “This time, my dreams are very much what they were when I was going to Vince Gill and Patty Loveless concerts and decided I was going to move to Nashville. Right now, my dreams are as big as when I was naïve enough to really dream them.”

Big Day in a Small Town tells the stories of the football star, the father, the homecoming queen, and the hairdresser because those are the stories and people that Clark grew up knowing.

“All these songs, there's some little truth in them, somewhere, that resonates with me or that is about me,” she confesses.

Currently on the road with Jennifer Nettles on the CMT Next Women of Country Tour, the singer/songwriter has toured with Eric Church and Alan Jackson during the last two years in addition to solo shows.

Details emerge on upcoming Biffy Clyro album

Biffy Clyro follow 2013's critically acclaimed U.K. #1 double-album Opposites with their seventh studio album Ellipsis, which will be released on July 8 via Warner Bros.

Pre-orders for the album are now open with the first single "Wolves of Winter" streaming and available as an instant grat track. Click here to pre-order. Click here to view the "Wolves of Winter" Trailer.

Simon Neil (vocals/guitar) and the Johnston brothers James (bass) and Ben (drums) recorded with producer Rich Costey (Muse, My Chemical Romance, Sigur Ros).

Citing influences like Tears For Fears' Songs From The Big Chair album and metal band Deafheaven, Neil has described Ellipsis as "more of a punch to the nose than a big cuddle." Lyrically, the album's songs tackle personal issues with the idea of "fighting back" as a recurring theme.

Such themes are also apparent in the album's visceral first single "Wolves of Winter." Neil says it is "about us being wolves on a patch and if you come onto that patch, we'll tear you limb from limb."

An Ellipsis (most commonly depicted as ...) indicates a continuation: in this case, Biffy Clyro's new body of work is an ongoing representation of everything that the band have stood for since first debuting in 2002 with the Blackened Sky album.

Ellipsis will be available digitally and on CD and vinyl editions.

Opposites saw Biffy Clyro flourish with their first U.K. #1 album and another U.K. Top 10 single with "Black Chandelier". The band's live shows soared to new heights with highlights including debut festival headline sets at Reading, Leeds, Radio 1's Big Weekend, Isle of Wight and T in the Park; a triumphant sold-out UK arena tour; and extensive touring across six continents.
